SuperYacht of the Week: 54m explorer-style Leo Fun
By C.C. Schindel
The superyacht Leo Fun was the initial stylings of world renowned Naval Architect, Paolo Caliari of Caliari Yachts Inc. (Caliari). Partnering with Caliari is the team of Turkey’s Proteksan Turquoise Design (builder) and Jean Guy Vergès (interior design). This 54-meter explorer-style superyacht, with a 9.5 meter beam, is set apart by other yachts in her class with her highly stylish, detailed exterior design, and spacious layout.
Launched in January 2009, and the queen of the 2009 Mediterranean Yacht Broker’s Association (MYBA) Charter Show, this superyacht was designed for a new era, and may already deserve the likely future-fame she is expected to receive by the superyachting community.
Leo Fun was fabricated with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure and is the sister ship of Vinydrea the first 54 meter explorer superyacht built by Proteksan Turquoise. She can reach a maximum speed of 18 knots, powered by twin Caterpillar 3512B diesel engines, each rated for 1,911 horsepower. Her range is 5000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 15 knots, making a transatlantic trip an option for guests.
She has been built to ABS class and fully MCA compliant. These features allow guests to enjoy the ocean in safety and comfort and do so with economical fuel efficiency.
Her unique asymmetrical main deck design creates a large and comfortable salon, which covers a staggering 100 square meters. This extra space was accomplished by having only a port-side side deck. Because of her layout, this superyacht has approximately 30% more space when compared to other yachts of similar length. Additionally, she features large side windows offering ample interior natural light and scenic views.
Her main aft deck is also oversized, and features a large lounge area, as well as a huge pool/spa that is equipped with a glass waterfall wall, and is flanked with a pair of large stairways leading to the huge bathing platform, where guest can enjoy the wide array of water toys and diving equipment.
She can accommodate 12 guests in 6 cabins: one main deck, full-beam master suite, one lower deck, full-beam VIP suite and four guest staterooms (three doubles and one twin), also found on the lower deck. All cabins feature private ensuite facilities, satellite TV, VCR, DVD, music and video on demand, Wi-Fi Internet, I-Pod station.
The master suite can be found on the full beam main deck. Perhaps the most impressive room onboard, it features floor to ceiling windows enhancing the feeling of open space, providing panoramic views, even from the owner’s bath which is set against large windows that open to a forward deck terrace. Even more light floods into the bathroom through the large skylight above the bathtub.
The crew’s quarters sleep 10 comfortably that includes five lower deck cabins. These quarters are large and well appointed with a private dining area, service galley, and entertainment center. A hidden door gives access from the crew quarters to the guest area for service purposes. The captain’s cabin is located on the upper deck.
On the portside main deck companionway is the service door to the main galley which is fully equipped with stainless steel appliances, oversized food storages and large fridges and freezers. Additional wall cabinets also provide ample storage. A set of three windows brings natural light to this galley giving it an open and airy feeling.
As her name reflects, this superyacht is meant to be enjoyed by her guests. Her sundeck features a Jacuzzi for six, surrounded by sun-pads, sheltered lounge area, large dining area accommodates 14 guests, barbecue, bar, fridge, ice maker, retractable awning, and day head with shower. The upper deck features another spacious lounge, alfresco dining inside/outside dining area, and forward seating area.
