The Superyacht Cup Palma 2007 incorporating The New Zealand Millennium Cup
Thursday, 29 March 2007
Over 40 yachts have already entered and interest is still building for this unique sailing event. The Local Government Authorities in Palma are giving their full backing and plans are well underway for hosting potentially the largest gathering of superyachts ever.
The Superyacht Cup, held annually for the last 10 years is the longest running superyacht event in Europe. It is normally held in October of every year; however for the forthcoming year The Superyacht Cup is changing dates to June 16th -19th to fall between the Louis Vuitton Challenger series and the finals of the America's Cup being held in Valencia. The Millennium Cup, which was started in New Zealand during the 2000 America's Cup and held again in 2003, will be incorporated in to The Superyacht Cup for the final days racing, the first time this event has been held in Europe.
Up to 55 superyachts of over 30m and up to 90m are expected to participate in the four day event which will be held in Dique del Oeste in the south west of the Bay of Palma. A 15,000 m2 purpose-built Superyacht Cup Village will incorporate sponsor VIP lounges, bars, restaurants and an entertainment area. The yachts will be moored stern-to along the dock.
The Superyacht Cup will open with a Welcome Reception for the 1,200 yacht owners, guests, and sponsors of the event. It will be presented by the Palma Town Council and held in the Castillo de San Carlos, a fortress dating back to the 17th century that overlooks the whole site. During the event the elevated position of the Castillo will provide an excellent viewing position for watching the yachts out in the Bay. Each afternoon as the fleet returns from sailing, entertainment will be laid on in the Superyacht Cup Village hosted by the event sponsors. The final day of The Superyacht Cup will be known as 'New Zealand Millennium Cup Day' when all the competing yachts will sail for the 3rd edition of the New Zealand Millennium Cup. The New Zealand Millennium Cup has become a successful brand that is synonymous with the New Zealand Marine Industry, long-term supporters of the Palma event. The Superyacht Cup 2007 will be brought to a spectacular close with The Superyacht Cup Prize Giving and Millennium Cup Ball. |
