By Merijn de Waard
The French commercial shipyard Piriou has signed a contract to build a 76.60 metre superyacht explorer. The exterior lines of the motor yacht are designed by Pierre Jacques Kubis Designs in co-operation with the engineering team of Piriou.
The explorer motor yacht will have an ice-classed steel hull and is built for world-cruising in the most extreme conditions (-20°c / + 50°c). She will have a diesel-electric propulsion system consisting of 6 generators, twin 1,500kW Azipods and one 600kW pumpjet. On-board there will be accommodation for 18 guests and 18 crew members. The yacht will have a top speed of 15 knots, cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 12,000 nautical miles.
The contract means 500,000 hours of work; 350,000hrs for Piriou and 150,000hrs for subcontractors, which is the equivalent of 200 jobs in 3 years. The explorer motor yacht will be delivered in 2015.
