Derecktor introduces new four-stateroom layouts for Derecktor/Frers 45.5m

Few new vessels have a better pedigree than the 150-foot (45.5M) performance sailing yacht now awaiting a new owner at the Derecktor Connecticut shipyard. Germán Frers, the Argentine designer whose name is synonymous with some of the most famous racing sailboats in the world, provided the naval architecture for the project, while award-winning British superyacht designer John Munford created the interior concept.

Derecktor’s skilled craftsmen already have completed 90 percent of the work on the yacht’s next-generation aluminum alloy hull, and the keel is complete but not yet attached – ensuring a much faster-than- normal delivery timeframe for an interested buyer.

With her interior still an unfulfilled promise, the project is poised at the perfect moment for an owner to step in and set his or her stamp on this one-of-a-kind vessel – a spectacular-looking sloop that is equally suited to racing in the St. Barth’s Bucket, cruising in the Med and providing sterling charter service. To that end, Derecktor’s in-house design team has developed two new, four-stateroom layouts for the Frers 150 to supplement the original three-stateroom concept – providing owners with ultimate flexibility in customizing the project to suit their particular yachting lifestyle.

"A lot of people expressed interest in a four-stateroom configuration for the boat,” said Gavin Higgins, VP of Business Development for Derecktor Shipyards. “These two layouts, which support family cruising and charter operations, will open up new opportunities.”

One four-stateroom version converts the former owner’s study into a children’s cabin that will keep kids close to their parents, yet happy and entertained in a haven of their own. For the second option, Derecktor’s design team reconfigured the aft guest quarters completely, creating four spacious staterooms that will exceed the expectations of charter guests.

The new layouts can be executed without significantly altering the concept John Munford created for the project, if that is what the new owners desire,” Higgins added. “Our joiner shop can easily fabricate the new staterooms’ joinery to match his original vision.”

Blending the best of old and new, Munford’s elegant, traditional interior for the Frers 150 was designed to be built utilizing the latest honeycomb and foam-core technology, in order to minimize weight while maximizing the rich feel of the cherry wood cabinetry.

This yacht is the ultimate owner’s yacht. She has the classic feel of a J Class yacht with the capabilities of a fast modern sloop,” Munford said. “The raised and fielded cherry panel interior is simply and logically arranged. The full-width main saloon/dining room is partially open to the pilothouse, giving the feeling of comfort, space and airiness. The crew area with its simple Shaker style, white painted bulkheads with cherry furniture, makes a generous and bright work environment.” The designer continued, “Working with Derecktor, I have been really impressed with their attitude, professionalism and craftsmanship. There are few projects that have given me such satisfaction to work on.”

Germán Frers designed the deck layout for the Frers 150 to make yacht operation and sail handling as easy as possible during both racing and cruising with a short crew, by using the right combination and number of conventional and power winches and hydraulic systems. The yacht’s carbon fiber spars and rigging are modern and user- friendly. The swept-back spreader rig is not dependent on runners. The sail plan geometry with its short overlap roller furling headsail will be efficient and easy to use. The stowage of a large tender below deck also has been resolved in a functional and practical manner.

She has been designed to be fast and seakindly with the help of our advanced computational programs and our experience in large yachts,” Frers said. “The materials used for the construction of her hull and deck, under Lloyd’s survey, are of the latest generation of aluminum alloys and it has been carried out by Derecktor according to their own experience and well-known ability. Without risking exaggeration, one can simply say that our design No. 1121, currently under construction at the Derecktor Shipyard in Connecticut, is an exceedingly well built, sophisticated blend of the latest technology and materials with tradition.”
