For over forty years Boero YachtCoatings, the Italian based coating manufacturer, has played an important role in the superyacht industry, supplying fully reliable paint systems and dedicated technical consultancy to the most famous new build and refit shipyards in Europe. Kano & Storm is a paint applicator specialised in superyachts who works closely with Boero, and boasts an experience of over 12 years. Here we speak with the Directors, David Fryer and Malcolm Kerr, to know a bit more about their companies.

“We have faired and painted new builds for Benetti, Azimut, VSY, CRN and refits from Lürssen, Fincantieri at Italian yards such as Sevenstars, Lusben and Tecnopool,” says Fryer. For the last 12 years they have been Benetti’s main exterior paint contractor, working with the typical Italian style and elegance combined with northern European management attitude. They are currently working on seven new Benetti yachts ranging in size from 55 to 107-metres whilst working in parallel with Lusben, Benetti’s refit & repair division.

“Over the time we have worked with Benetti we have also developed a long-term highly successful working relationship with Boero YachtCoatings” adds Malcolm Kerr. “The majority of our projects have been completed using the Boero fairing system. Our long term partnership and extensive working knowledge of these products have ensured these projects have met the expected high standards.”

“The lightweight Epolight Win product is our chosen fairing compound due to its ease of workability including both application and subsequent sanding. The Boero YachtCoatings technical support team are always on hand to offer the necessary support when required.”

The complete Boero YachtCoatings paint system has recently been tested by Wrede Technologies (sister company of Wrede Consulting) in order to verify the resistance of the system to extreme weather conditions. The outcome was extremely successful after a number of sessions of extreme temperature excursions (up to 85 °C and down to -30 °C). The difficulty of this standardised test lies not only in the temperatures, but also in the difficult geometry of the chosen mock-up, the high thickness of filler applied and the sudden cooling down of the paint systems.

Among the fillers which were successfully tested in the Boero YachtCoatings paint systems, there are Epolight Win, the lightest filler on the market, with excellent resistance to cracking, and Epoyacht, the latest product launched by the Boero YachtCoatings R&D team.

The R&D department is one of the main focuses of the company, being a constant support for the full range of products manufactured by Boero YachtCoatings (antifouling, primers, fillers, undercoats, topcoats, varnishes, et al.) and leading innovation with the development of new products such as the new Challenger Pro topcoat, available in direct gloss and double layer, with up to 8,000 different shades thanks to the ChallengerMix tintometric system.

Another key feature offered by Boero YachtCoatings is its Technical Consultancy, which offers a constant support during the various phases of a superyacht build. This feature has been constantly used in Boero YachtCoatings’ proven track record of over 700 superyachts and yachts which have chosen its paint system for their protection. Shipyards like Baglietto, Benetti, Codecasa, Couach, MB92 and Perini Navi, just to name a few, have all teamed up with Boero YachtCoatings as manufacturer of the paint products for their projects.
