When most people envision superyacht cruising destinations, their minds often wander to the sun-soaked Caribbean or the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. Yet the provinces of Atlantic Canada, also known as the Maritime Provinces, with their rugged charm and allure, are not typically the first superyacht cruising destinations that spring to mind. Despite this, many superyachts venture into this region. Atlantic Canada encompasses four distinct provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland &amp; Labrador.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300254/image/large-46eae81c53fc4431b2a8c8e1d69a8081.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300254"><a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a> recently engaged in a discussion with Adam and Amanda Langley, founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7520" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht East Coast (Company)">Superyacht East Coast</a>, a company specialising in promoting the development and interconnection of marinas in the region to optimise their operational efficiency. Adam, with his prior experience in marine operations and development for Develop Nova Scotia, a government initiative, observed that many yachts were initially unaware of Nova Scotia as a destination, perceiving it as remote, despite its proximity to the Northeast Coast of the United States.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300294/image/large-2a2af7718170971c61b1d78e74764f01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300294">Data sourced from <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a>&nbsp; covering the period from 2022 onwards, illustrates a consistent number of superyacht visits to Atlantic Canada during the summer months. A deeper analysis reveals that there were 35 superyacht visits in 2023, closely paralleling the 34 visits in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300317/image/large-480e666286279f1ae4db7540246e582a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300317">Reflecting on the increasing presence of superyachts in Atlantic Canada, Adam remarked: “A decade ago, there were barely any superyachts in the region, around a handful. Now, when we attend boat shows in Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach and mention that about 40 superyachts visited Halifax last summer, people are genuinely shocked.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300307/image/large-48caad71fec562e79e8eec623b09f23b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300307">Captain Chris Walsh of the 67.75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/108" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Archimedes67.75m (222'3&quot;)Feadship2008">Archimedes</a> shared his perspective on the region's unique appeal, noting: “my first time in the area was in 2004, the main attraction of Atlantic Canada is its unspoiled nature. With plenty of interesting activities, readily available docks, and numerous harbours, the region is a haven for those who love the outdoors, nature, and wildlife. Its perceived remoteness is misleading, as it's quite accessible from the Northeast Coast of the USA. Its status as a hidden gem is precisely what I find appealing.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300252/image/large-30286e1893f344185741ca7a5fa7f999.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300252">Echoing Walsh’s sentiment, Amanda Langley further underscored the region's growing attraction among superyacht owners. She highlighted the distinct allure of Atlantic Canada, saying, “The distinctive authenticity offers a stark contrast to the experiences in places like Florida and Monaco.” She explained that owners are increasingly attracted to the region, not in search of experiences akin to those found in Fort Lauderdale, but for the novel and enriching adventures exclusive to this region.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300255/image/large-b63172d5acac87e80173f7bb72e548ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300255">In discussing the diversity of cruising destinations within Atlantic Canada, Adam and Amanda highlighted approximately five distinct areas, each with their own charm and challenges. They specifically emphasised the Bay of Fundy, famous for having the world's highest tides. Recognising the concerns these conditions may pose for captains, they stated: “We ensure superyacht captains venturing into the region have a thorough understanding of the local maritime environments by providing advice and guidance to support diverse itineraries and safe navigation through our waters.” As for Fundy’s tides, they only impact a small portion of the province with the rest of Nova Scotia experiencing 1.5–2.5 metre tidal ranges.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300286/image/large-7083005641923f9e5a9c0c1706f6f8f9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300286">Captain Emile Bootsma of the 60.35-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/185" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Moon60.35m (197'12&quot;)Feadship2005">Blue Moon</a> described the region with vivid enthusiasm. “It possesses beauty to match Maine and the isolation akin to Alaska, offering everything an adventurous superyacht owner could desire and more. The region has gorgeous, isolated anchorages, flat calm waters, and an abundance of cultural and historic interests”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300302/image/large-4160adbd48b60fff2cee92e43ddbce5f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300302">Expanding on the region's diversity, Adam states, “On the western shore of Nova Scotia, there's a body of water we affectionately refer to the Mediterranean of the North with water temperatures that surprisingly reach into the high 20s Celsius during summer, often warmer than many expect.” He continued, “Additionally, our province is home to Cape Breton Island, which has an inland sea. Remarkably, a 200-foot yacht can navigate through a canal to enter this brackish, saltwater habitat known as The Bras d’Or Lake.” Amanda chimed in, commenting: “I believe it's yachting’s best-kept secret. Over the past year, we've collaborated with the tourism association in Cape Breton Island to raise awareness of this hidden gem.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300311/image/large-053369221d18a0d29a5f3777e5fc89c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300311">Captain Walsh further emphasised the beauty of Cape Breton, articulating how the region fosters a deep connection with the maritime world, which is at the heart of what yachting enthusiasts cherish. He shared his experiences, stating, “Visiting Cape Breton feels like a reconnection to the essence of the maritime world. It's a sentiment we all deeply appreciate”. He also reflected on his journey to southern Newfoundland, drawing a captivating comparison: “The experience there was remarkable. Additionally, several other courses in the vicinity deserve world-class recognition for their quality and challenge. Notably, on nearby Prince Edward Island, Dundarave and Crowbush stand out. Also, Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, presents an exceptionally well-protected harbour and a charming city to explore”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300247/image/large-7182b984f524411d0d9807555d3d365e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300247">Adding a further personal perspective to the region Captain Bracewell shared: “Nova Scotia, meaning New Scotland, truly lives up to its name, the resemblance to the Scottish coastline is striking. During the age of sail, it was renowned as one of the world’s foremost builders of sailing ships. This legacy has cultivated a wealth of professional services and maritime expertise, catering to a broad spectrum of needs, ranging from commercial and recreational vessels to superyachts. Adam Langley, emphasising this point, stated, “A crucial factor that reassures captains is the region's developing shipyard and marine service providers. They offer dependable resources for necessary repairs or maintenance, ensuring a seamless continuation of their voyage”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300330/image/large-f54bd5382a3b8b329f8a6872e07b3293.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300330">The region has been steadily enhancing its infrastructure to better accommodate superyacht visitation, with Halifax emerging as a 'port of confidence.' This term signifies a destination where captains can expect a seamless experience, supported by a full suite of services tailored to their needs. The city’s robust infrastructure contributes to its appeal as a superyacht hub. Elaborating on Halifax's allure, Amanda noted, “Superyachts can dock right in the heart of the city, providing immediate access to the finest restaurants, art galleries, and museums. You're essentially at the centre of everything. Moreover, the proximity to an international airport simplifies logistics for guests and crew, including arrivals and changes.”In further sharing his insights, Captain Bracewell highlighted the city’s charm. “Halifax is an exceptional city with a vibrant food culture and fantastic restaurants,”. He further added, &nbsp;“What’s more, just a six to ten-hour cruise away, you can reach remarkably remote areas. These locations, known for their serene beauty and tranquillity, are largely inaccessible by any means other than by sea”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300301/image/large-ee536deb4cc23de3be2601656a896b4d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300301">Adding to the discussion of the region’s infrastructure, Chris Walsh highlighted the ease of yachting operations in less crowded spaces. "It makes it very easy to reconnect," Walsh noted. "Here, you're not competing with so many other superyachts for a little spot or a service from someone. The less crowded environment is a significant advantage, making the cruising experience more relaxed and enjoyable.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300263/image/large-097395da51eb70722090986048e3f0c6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300263">Adam further elucidated that “While Halifax acts as a gateway supporting the broader itinerary across the province, it’s important to note that Nova Scotia doesn’t have, nor does it aim to develop, traditional superyacht marinas. This approach is part of our charm and what draws people here. Instead, our focus is on ensuring the existing infrastructure, like floating docks, power, water, and Wi-Fi, meets a high standard. We prioritise enhancing traditional settings, such as timber wharves, to accommodate superyachts comfortably, blending our rich maritime heritage with modern necessities”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300327/image/large-2b20dde4864e80172aa7dc50de863318.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300327">As we have observed, Atlantic Canada's charm as an unexpected superyacht destination is on the rise, presenting a refreshing alternative to the traditional yachting hotspots. However, this increasing popularity may present a double-edged sword. While it brings more attention to the region, there is a risk that it could impact its rustic, isolated appeal, which is part of what makes it so uniquely attractive to explorers and yachting enthusiasts. “Managing expectations of our visitors, local communities and service providers is a priority focus for us as we work to build a network of marine destinations while maintaining the authentic appeal of our people and places across Atlantic Canada”, Adam concluded.

While the London-based design firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> may be best known for its work within the Turkish superyacht sector, having designed more than 30 yachts in the region, the company’s canon is varied in both design style and yacht type. Led by the inimitable Jonny Horsfield, whose frank, straight talking attitude has led to many close relationships with builders and clients, the studio is home to a deep level of expertise, with a team that specialise in some of the most detailed work found in the global fleet. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308201/image/large-7f656666f3ac42ed60e82c2ef71ff971.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308201">A automotive designer by training, Jonny found his place in yacht design in the late 80s somewhat by chance, cutting his teeth under Martin Francis – designer of the highly recognisable superyachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A 119.0m (390'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH2008">Motor Yacht A</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Odyssey123.2m (404'2&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2015">Golden Odyssey</a>&nbsp;and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH1991">ECO&nbsp;</a>(to name a few). Returning to London in the early-90s, he joined the team at Donald Starkey, alongside Pascale Reymond and Andy Langton, future founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton Design</a>. Under Starkey, Jonny specialised in interior design, and he describes those years as “the best years of learning for my career.”When Starkey let the team go during the 1993 recession, Jonny and Steve Howard, another of Starkey’s team, decided to go it alone, utilising their experience and contacts gained under Don to pick up work within the Turkish refit market. Officially coining the company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> (Horsfield and Howard being the two Hs), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">Yachting Partners International</a> became a major advocate for the brand’s early success and the refit work was considerable. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/77954/image/large-842bee5b9290948276598155fd15d277.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77954">“It was a different refit market back then, quick and somewhat dirty, but we learned a lot about costs, budgeting and about how to keep the client happy. The issue was that we really weren’t building a reputation in the new-build sector so changing that perspective took a lot of work.” By 2006 however, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> landed its first new-build with the interior of Talisman C, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Talisman Maiton54.2m (177'10&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2006">Talisman Maiton</a>, at Proteksan, the shipyard that went on to become <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a>. That first build set the ball rolling for new-builds and also forged a hugely successful relationship with the shipyard. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> has now launched 10 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> yachts, with two more currently in-build.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280772/image/large-6a60d2ad84d85ed0a07b797a98158dc2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280772">While Turkish yachts are only part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> story, they do make up nearly half of the studio’s portfolio and in some ways Jonny has taken some negative heat over the years for the interior styling of a number of the yachts. The recent launch of the 80-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>, which made it onto the cover of a number of publications and garnered millions of views on social media, is an example of one yacht that, while divisive, demonstrates <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2’</a>s capabilities when it comes to bespoke superyacht interiors.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280861/image/large-4fdcc27bcbf5b4f9f516e9fde5e7b11d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280861"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280792/image/large-6a058140153c6376373dfa183966f71c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280792">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>’s interior is not my style, it's not representative necessarily of the studio’s style, but it also isn’t the role of a yacht designer to force their own style on a client. We never expected <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a> to be for sale and certainly didn’t expect her to attend a yacht show. One example of this is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>’s sistership <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> launched in 2020, for which Jonny received a number of plaudits. A contemporary, modern and fresh style, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a>’s interiors have been widely acclaimed, with many new and international clients coming to the studio on the back of her success. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vento87.0m (285'5&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2024">Vento</a>, the 87-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> due to launch later this year, is set to exhibit yet another of the studio’s capabilities, and will be an interesting yacht to see. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308209/image/large-ec49ff618eec8cfda55c4124a2a08c77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308209">When it comes to his favourite yachts in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> portfolio, the stand out for Jonny today is the 74.98-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a>, launched in 2020 and hailed as the yacht to see at last year’s boat show in Palm Beach. “If you’d asked me a few years ago I would have said the 123-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5968" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Lusail123.0m (403'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Al Lusail&nbsp;</a>(exterior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>), but seeing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> at Palm Beach, I was really blown away. I’d not seen the yacht outside of the yard, and while she has a fairly standard profile in terms of lines, the detailing in her proportions are lovely and something I am really proud of.” &nbsp;A knock-out at the show, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> sold during the event, with allegedly as many as 25 millionaires stepping onboard during the course of the week, which is a testament to her design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261070/image/large-877f2ec3b1bec6c03a535c35842aad10.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261070"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5968" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Lusail123.0m (403'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Al Lusail</a>, one of the largest in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s canon, is far more radical in her exterior lines, with interconnecting arches throughout her superstructure. Comparing the two boats Jonny explains, “when you look at her you think, that is a spaceship, but in a way her exterior was easier to design, because the brief was ‘do whatever you want, go wild’. Whereas for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> the brief was very particular and fairly conservative and that restriction can be challenging. In a way I am more proud of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> and the way we created this ultra-modern and sleek yacht within more traditional proportions.”&nbsp;While talking about large yachts, it's impossible to not to mention <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV Ocean</a>, which is due to be the largest yacht in the world when launched in 2026. Now expected to be around 195-metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a> has been through some highly publicised delays and developments, but despite the broad exposure, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s has gone somewhat unmentioned. Involved in the project from a very early point, the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a>, the Norwegian businessman Kjell Inge Røkke, first saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s work onboard the 107.4-metre Ulysses (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/13" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco Yacht Show 2018</a>. “He didn’t necessarily like the interior of Ulysses, but Kjell admired what we had done at a commercial shipyard, using cruise ship technology and a tight budget, to create a superyacht finish and so we were commissioned to create the interiors of REV.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308208/image/large-f0eaa1a977e141fe4c590f8d017fa765.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308208"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308207/image/large-9548aa44296343ae53a771e521687c0c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308207">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a>’s construction now back underway, Jonny and the team have kicked back into gear, digging out the drawings and revising the interiors, where possible, to align with the new exterior. Kept tightly under wraps, Jonny describes her interiors as “minimal and quite industrial, almost like an apartment in regards to the architecture and aesthetic, with features such as perforated metal doors. It was a really enjoyable project to work on and I’m looking forward to getting stuck back into it over the coming months.”&nbsp;While its portfolio is broad, and Jonny remains firm on the stance that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> does not have a house style, when pushed he does infer that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> is most closely aligned with his own stylistic taste. “I would say that ‘house style’ changes over time and develops with the market. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> has been a really great project for us and we have seen a lot of demand for the modern and neutral aesthetic – you will recognise it to an extent in Al Reem which is due for launch this year. Tuzla-based boat builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5300" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yonca Onuk JV (Company)">Yonca Shipyard</a> has announced the launch of Mishi Yachts, including the first 26.82-metre cruising sloop <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mishi26.0m (85'4&quot;)Yonca Onuk JV2018">Mishi 88</a>. Having come and gone more than once over the past 150 years, hydrofoils are all the rage again and here to stay this time. The latest technology has overcome many of the shortfalls of older systems, but are foiling superyachts feasible?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308780/image/large-abca08ac22ef3c76d219eca23c4a28dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308780">Over the past two decades foiling has taken off, literally and figuratively. It started with the innovative boards designed by surfers, followed by the specialist one-man classes like the foiling International Moths. Then came the high-performance sailing projects such as the 60-foot foiling trimaran l’Hydroptère, which broke the 50-knot barrier in 2008 and hinted at an exciting if highly specialised future for foils. But the idea of foils on mainstream leisure boats and superyachts has always seemed somewhat remote.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308784/image/large-93508982c0f2307aa183db514c6f8972.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308784">More recently, the advent of electric propulsion in tandem with the rising interest in foils, thanks largely to their adoption by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6878" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SailGP (Company)">SailGP</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="America's Cup 2024 - 37th America's Cup Barcelona">America’s Cup</a> sail racing programmes, has again brought foiling to the fore because they resolve a very basic problem. For boats with electric propulsion, or experimental hydrogen fuel cells in the case of the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="America's Cup 2024 - 37th America's Cup Barcelona">America’s Cup</a> chase boats, hydrodynamic drag means that displacement hulls and (to a lesser extent) planing boats struggle to attain a practical range for the given power-carrying capacity between charging. It is here that foils offer a clear advantage: if you can get your boat to emerge from the water and ‘fly’, you don’t need to worry so much about drag and the given power you are carrying in your battery banks can take you that much further. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255101/image/large-3c47262ba3d15266b43994009e44c595.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255101">“Our strategy is go faster to go further,” says Michael Jost, former Chief Strategy Officer at the VW Group who oversaw the start of the Group’s long-term transition away from fossil fuels. It’s a game plan Jost is employing with his new venture, eD-TEC, which has developed the all-electric eD-QDrive system. SilentYachts is coupling the system with a foiling 28-foot HYSUCAT multihull design to create a 40-knot electric boat that the catamaran builder claims still offers a range of 70 nautical miles.Electric avenue&nbsp;Across the spectrum, the combination of foils and electric drive systems is taking hold. Small boat builders such as Swedish brand <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5799" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Candela Speed Boat (Company)">Candela</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5737" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Enata Marine (Company)">Enata</a> in the Middle East, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Navier (Company)">Navier</a> in the US and Eldorado in the Netherlands, among others, are already building foiling leisure, passenger, water taxi and workboat vessels. The water toy world is alive with eFoil boards and the personal watercraft segment is also getting wise with projects such as the Valo Hyperfoil that adds retractable active foils to electric-drive jet skis.However, things get a little more complicated when it comes to larger craft. The advent of high-speed hydrofoil passenger vessels in the latter part of the 20th century was followed by a marked decline as the limitations of larger foilers became apparent – notably, the need for flat hulls with limited viability in bigger seas, and the potential for striking waterborne objects that could damage or destroy foils made from materials that were not as advanced as they are now.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308788/image/large-eb9a1f3f86b23adca1520c7e78078250.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308788">Considerable progress has been made in sailing with vessels such as the F50 used on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6878" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SailGP (Company)">SailGP</a> circuit, the new AC40 and AC75 yachts for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="America's Cup 2024 - 37th America's Cup Barcelona">America’s Cup</a>, along with the Ultime trimarans and IMOCA 60s. All these boats show how consistent 40-to-50-knot-plus performance is possible through the extreme application of surface-piercing foil technologies. Indeed, there has even been a crossover with sailing yacht projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6478" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Marine S.A. (Company)">King Marine</a>’s FlyingNikka&nbsp;mini maxi and sailing superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raven34.0m (111'7&quot;)Baltic Yachts2023">Raven 111</a> from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a> that use foils to mitigate some of the displacement rather than making the hull fully fly. At the same time, however, they have also highlighted some of the limits to mainstream adoption.The foil wing tips are one. Even when the arms are folded under the hull for docking, they project more than two metres either side the yacht. Then there is the complex (and expensive) structural engineering needed to build and mount the arms into the topsides. Finally, there’s the sailing aspect, which requires precision and experience when powered up in foil-assisted flight.Practical limits&nbsp;For Seattle-based naval architect Paul Bieker, one of the world’s foremost experts on hydrofoiling, sailing foilers will always be limited by these constraints: “I would be surprised if fully foiling configurations find a significant place in mainstream, non-professional sailing yachts,” he says. “They require a lot of sailing skill and focus, high maintenance, expensive equipment, and they have a significant potential for personal injury.”&nbsp;Retractable foiling systems like the Dynamic Stability System (DSS) developed by Hugh Welbourn, Gordon Kay and Will Brooks, offer advantages such as improved righting moment, reduced heel and better motion in a seaway, plus more stability for big-boat, big-sea sailing. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308786/image/large-d78769a2b71c292caceeab81b0112753.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308786">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raven34.0m (111'7&quot;)Baltic Yachts2023">Raven</a> is not a yacht you could imagine relaxing in – it’s a balls-to-the-wall affair,” says Henry Hawkins, Executive Vice-President at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>. “But we used the DSS on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> 142 Canova and it’s a completely different kettle of fish. There was a wish for a &nbsp;performance increase, but it wasn’t the driving factor behind the owner’s decision to install it.”The design demands of creating a full-flight vessel are, for the most part, incompatible with larger luxury yachts. Weight is a critical issue, for one, and while that can be overcome by adding larger foils, which in turn offer a greater aspect ratio and therefore greater lift, but there is an upper limit to the practical design of hydrofoils.“In general, the weight of a vessel scales with the length squared and the amount of lift that you can get off a foil scales with length squared – this reality means that there is a point where hydrofoiling gets more difficult with increased size,” says Bieker. “That said, the control of active hydrofoils tends to get easier with size because the actuators do not have to move as fast as they do in a smaller boats with smaller foils.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308860/image/large-a60ff05e451e2cee5403bcbd867c7901.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308860">Bieker thinks there is more potential for moderate-sized foiling motor yachts: “The operating parameters for motor yachts are better defined and there is great potential for improving fuel consumption and comfort,” he says. “That said, they will still be significantly more expensive than non-foiling vessels.”Romain Ingouf is Technical Director at Artemis Technologies, a maritime engineering firm that emerged out of the Artemis Racing team that competed in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="America's Cup 2024 - 37th America's Cup Barcelona">America’s Cup</a>. The Belfast-based company has partnered with Condor Ferries to develop the 24-metre Artemis EF-24, a commuter ferry equipped with electric eFoiler propulsion able to carry 150 passengers at a top speed of 36 knots with a range of 95 nautical miles. Ingouf suggests that 24 metres in length overall with a displacement of around 75 tons is the sweet spot for a foiling monohull powerboat design.“You don’t want to have a boat that has foils sticking out at the sides because you need to get alongside docks and manoeuvre around marinas, and so forth,” he says. “You can certainly go bigger, to as much as 36 metres most likely, but then very rapidly you need a very beamy boat to have the aspect ratio on your foil so you are more efficient at creating lift without adding too much drag. Is foiling the solution to everything? Very likely not, although it’s fantastic in some applications.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308857/image/large-849e3ed467e7f08e313e6c73c4f635a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308857">The future for foils?The future for foils beyond smaller vessels may be limited when it comes to full-flight solutions, but that doesn’t exclude potential for foils in large yacht design. Indeed, appendages that can improve efficiency and comfort – particularly when combined with stabilisation systems to offer multi-axis motion control – have been available for more than a decade. The Hull Vane, a fixed foil or wing designed and patented by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a> that was first fitted on the 42.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4639" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ares42.4m (139'1&quot;)Heesen Yachts2014">Alive</a> in 2012, has proven itself on more than 65 yachts as well as commercial and military vessels.“The Hull Vane is derived from a device we developed for the French America’s Cup campaign in 2002,” says Perry van Oossanen, the studio’s Managing Director. “It’s not really intended to make a boat a foiling vessel as it’s designed for displacement hulls; we’ve taken a different approach by taking the vessel as it is and trying to enhance performance where we can.”&nbsp;The effect is less radical, but so is the technology involved. The location of the Hull Vane under the transom is important relative to the centre of gravity and works best if there’s a steep upcoming flow, which means quite steeply angled buttocks to the transom, but it can be retrofitted on any type of displacement hull.“It works well for a Froude number [the resistance of a partially submerged object moving through water] of 0.2 and upwards,” says van Oossanen. “For a 50-metre boat you’re there at five or six knots, and for an 80-metre boat you’re there at around 13 to 14 knots. We’ve installed it on a 100-metre patrol boat, but essentially the bigger the yacht the faster it needs to go to gain maximum benefit of the Hull Vane.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308778/image/large-e6090620180e08c2025c730977695724.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308778">Hull Vane BV has also developed Foil-Assist, a partial foiling solution mounted amidships on fast planing vessels that applies the same concept to fast hulls and was first used two years ago on a Wajer runabout. It should be noted that both the Foil-Assist and Hull Vane increase not only efficiency but also onboard comfort – an important consideration for any yacht owner. &nbsp;“However, although applications for foils are definitely increasing, there are a lot of owners out there who are not really interested in the foiling stuff,” warns van Oossanen. “They want to have volume, space and luxury and they don’t necessarily want to cruise at 30 knots.”While that may be true, foiling technology is set to grow, particularly as the superyacht industry enters its own energy transition. Even if methanol in reformers for fuel cells or multi-fuel engines becomes the energy carrier of choice, its energy density is considerably lower for a given volume compared to conventional diesel. So while the fuel may be cleaner, yachts will need to burn less of it for a given volume of tankage to avoid losing too much practical range, while adding more tanks means taking volume away from guest areas. In this scenario, non-flight hybrid foiling solutions could find their niche in mainstream yacht production and there may be a place for more extreme solutions for owners who want a more engaged boating experience.&nbsp;“There is potential for hydrofoil-assisted, non-flying boats, but there is no substitute for flying,” says Bieker. “Once you feel the acceleration that occurs when that last bit of hull leaves the water it is hard to stomach partial foiling solutions.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/285014/image/large-1afb80631a7886e71900e1011ca9ab77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/285014">Getting over the humpWhen the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a> 111 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raven34.0m (111'7&quot;)Baltic Yachts2023">Raven</a> hit the water for sail trials in the summer of 2023, all eyes turned to this sleek, foil-assisted superyacht. As the team gradually edged the yacht towards its performance limits, the yacht started hitting consistent speeds in the high 20-knots range, and the sailing world was abuzz. However, this style of yacht will probably remain an outlier and while great for exhilarating performance on the water, it is not ideal for coastal cruising with the family. The leeward foil is designed to carry up to 60 per cent of the yacht’s displacement at speed, but the engineering that has gone into creating a structure capable of handling the extreme loads has been immense.“The fitting which is bolted to the hull-deck joint of the foil arm is one metre long and made of machined titanium, for example,” says Kenneth Nyfelt, Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>. “The tolerances on all those fittings are incredible fine; you cannot allow any rattling or any vibration from it because then you are dead.”Even with Canova’s DSS, Henry Hawkins believes it will take time for most owners to gain confidence in the technology: “Look at how long it took us to get carbon rigging and canting keels onto boats; they’re still the unknown, and what people have taken from the racing scene is that the foils are always breaking,” he says. “So there’s a hump to get over, but I think there is a realisation that there is something to be offered by foiling technology, and it’s a question of how long it will take to find its way into the mainstream.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308861/image/large-11b3b0797fa572b289df3d06472924b7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308861">Tender trendsSmaller foiling boats and RIBs, whether using full-flight foils or foil-assist solutions, offer plenty of potential as standalone leisure boats, chase boats or tenders, particularly as alternative drive systems come on stream. Among many pioneers in this field is Gordon van Hardenbroek, an industrial designer and co-founder in 2015 of foiling boat company Edorado.“We started with a basic design premise of taking a planing hull, taking out the combustion engine and putting batteries in,” he says. “There weren’t many people doing it at the time, but we found as soon as you start going fast the range plummets. And I don’t believe that battery tech will improve enough to solve that problem. We realised that adding foils – in our case an active system made possible thanks to advances in sensors and computation – could double our range. Finally we realised that market demand was for retractable foils.”In addition to creating their own 8.35-metre 8S model, Edorado is also planning to release a pre-engineering platform that targets the superyacht sector. “The 8S is very much about flying,” he says. “It’s not about getting you from A to B, but rather the goal is the flying itself.”
