The SW 110 RS is the new flag ship of Southern Wind Shipyard. Once again, the boatyard appointed Farr Yacht Design for the design of the hull lines, appendages and sail plan for generous interior volumes and high performance. Nauta Design came up with the general concept, interior design and exterior styling and, in terms of sophistication and attention to details, the 110' represents a breath of fresh air.
Attention to build technology and quality, on the other hand, is the responsibility of the shipyard. The lamination department constructed the hull and deck using the infusion method on a female moulds and advanced composite materials (hull: Kevlar/Corecell/carbon fibre/epoxy resin; deck: carbon fibre, Klegcell, epoxy resin).
For the first time in the case of the SW 110, the Research & Development office decided to build the hull in three longitudinal sections rather than two split down the center line. This innovative solution is more accurate and efficient for two main reasons.
Firstly, it is easier for the staff to move around the moulds and position the fibres and sandwich core. Secondly, the resin has less distance to “climb”, which leads to a more even distribution. The need to make the structure as light as possibile has also meant that many of the furniture units have been built with a honeycomb core.
Like numerous other Southern Wind yachts, the new SW 110 RS was designed and commissioned for circumnavigating the globe without compromising on performance. The VPP (Velocity Prediction Program) developed by Farr Yacht Design indicates good performance in all wind conditions. For example, with a true wind speed of 8 knots and apparent wind angle of 34.2°, a boat speed of 10.83 knots is predicted.
The open transom (which houses the tender garage) and the uncluttered deck with its captive winches below deck and recessed main traveller, combine with the raised coachroof to provide a sleek yet sporty look. Both the mast and Park Avenue boom are made of carbon fibre.
From a systems point of view one area worthy of note is the forced air ventilation system borrowed from large motoryachts and ships. The SW 110 is also equipped with PTO functions (Power Take Off), which permit the use of several hydraulic functions at the same time. As with all SWS yachts, the engine room is designed to house all the equipment required for long-distance voyages with easy access for maintenance and inspection.
The interior layout is classic SWS, with separated crew quarters in the stern section and guest accommodation, consisting of two twin single cabins aft, a VIP cabin with central king-size bed amidships and the owner’s cabin forward with private study area, walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom that includes a bathtub as well as shower stall.
The interior styling is typical of Nauta Design’s flair for innovative solutions that provide clean lines and luminous spaces that are also warm and welcoming.
In the saloon there is a conversation area to port and dining area to starboard. An extension of the saloon forward houses a TV-entertainment area served by a U-shaped settee.
There is a subtle interplay of horizontal and vertical lines using natural teak and white lacquered surfaces. The furniture units appear to be suspended, rather like stage props, to increase the impression of available space.
