Superyacht of the Week: The 40 metre Serenity II

The striking 40 meter superyacht, Serenity II, was completed in June 2010, timed perfectly for the Mediterranean summer season. Built in Turkey by the Mengi Yay Shipyard, with exterior design by Endaze Mühendislik, and interior by H2 Yacht Design, this vivacious displacement superyacht has a powerful presence.

Serenity II was built by Mengi Yay Shipyards of Istanbul, Turkey, a company with a long history and tradition on the construction of yachts. Established in 1976, the company specialised in the production of three-meter boats. Over the years the company grew and increased its production capabilities and produced some 80 yachts of various sizes. By 1996, Mengi Yay Shipyards began to produce motor yachts, which have continued the success of the company. The 40 meter Serenity II, is an illustrative example of the accomplishments of Mengi Yay Shipyard to date.

The stylish interior design was done by London based H2 Yacht Design, a company which has built up a reputation in Turkey over the last 15 years and in 2007 was recommended for the interior design of the Serenity II project.

Interior designer Mr Jonny Horsfield of H2 Yacht Design stated that “The owners brief requested a contemporary feel but not too minimal and modern either. The yacht was to be a floating holiday home, which should also be smart and impressive enough to hold the inevitable business functions”.

This vessel comfortably accommodates 12 guests in five guest cabins. All cabins include a kings sized bed, en-suite bathrooms, mini bars, sofas, intercom, SAT phone and entertainment systems. With it striking combination of anigre, teak and wenge, the interior manages to offer variety of style and finish, each cabin being slightly different in feel to the next. Additionally, marble floors line the corridors and bathrooms which add to the elegant feel of the vessel.

Jonny mentioned that “though the interior was constructed in turkey much of the fabrics and special finishes were selected by H2 from European based suppliers...The fabrics were carefully selected to give a soft, tonal look with very little bright colour, but instead layers of texture with crème and taupe tones, giving a smart but sophisticated feel”.

With the owners suite located aft on the bridgedeck, the main saloon and dining room are the focal point for entertainment. The main saloon features a spacious sitting area, a bar, and a dining corner suitable for a guest banquet. Should guests prefer to dine outside, the aft deck offers ample sitting space and a dining table for exterior dining. The location of a bar aft services both inside and out, and the open plan design gives a feeling of immense space. The addition of Makassar wood and leathers gives the dining table and loose furniture a smart sleek feel. All the upholstery was completed locally.

The owners’s deck offers a spacious exterior sitting area, along with a coffee table for entertaining and relaxation. Additional outside relaxation areas include the Flybridge where there is ample space for sunbathing as well as a large Jacuzzi in the centre. There is also plenty of sitting space and a bar and dining table for entertaining.

According to Jonny, the most interesting feature of this yacht is: “the ‘gentlemen’s study’ which is located forward of the maindeck. With its panoramic view and access forward onto deck, this room is designed as the owners escape, as well as somewhere to hold business meetings in relative formality. With its raised and fielded panelling in a combination of wenge and maple, this room can be converted into an extra cabin with its own bathroom”.
