Since October 2023, the security dynamics have dramatically shifted. The region's shipping lanes are increasingly compromised by activities linked to Iran and its affiliated non-state actors, such as proxy militias, reflecting a broader escalation in regional tensions.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310595/image/large-9c930d64e7d8b10c0abe4219adade171.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310595">By mid-March of this year, 34 vessels had reported damage from drone missile attacks. On April 13, 2024, a significant development occurred as international media reported that Iranian forces seized the container ship Aries in the Strait of Hormuz. This event was the second major seizure by Iranian forces this year, following the earlier capture of the tanker St. Nikolas by Iran's Navy in January 2024.The geopolitical turbulence has prompted some vessels to navigate the longer and more perilous route around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. This detour, while avoiding the volatile Red Sea, has significantly extended the lead times for vessels and affected global shipping schedules and costs.This article explores the profound impacts of the increased regional instability on the superyacht sector, examining its effects on cruising in the Red and Arabian Seas, as well as on the supply chain for yacht production and new-build projects.How have the attacks in the Red and Arabian seas impacted superyacht cruising and transportation?:Superyachts often navigate through the Red and Arabian Seas for three main reasons. First, the area is crucial for refit and maintenance due to high demand. Second, the growing number of marinas can accommodate an increasing fleet of superyachts, coupled by efforts to promote the Gulf region as a prime destination for superyacht cruising and luxury tourism. Third, it serves as a strategic transit point to the Indian Ocean, offering access to popular destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291466/image/large-ee3cbb034446ab3174540d0191674f33.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291466">Using <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT</a>’s satellite tracking data, we analysed the number of 30-metre-plus superyachts entering the Red Sea from October 2022 to April 2023 and compared it with the same period from October 2023 to April 2024. We observed a significant reduction of 41.59% in the total number of superyachts, with 66 yachts recorded in the latter period compared to 113 in the previous year. In a conversation, Ian Harris, CEO and founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a>, and Yousuf Al Hashimi, Managing Director and Partner at the same firm, acknowledged the decline in the number of superyachts passing through the Suez Canal. They believe, however, that the international media has exaggerated the severity of the situation, noting that even though no actual damage has occurred to superyachts, insurance prices have still increased. He points out, “So far, most of the attacks have targeted commercial vessels.” Additionally, Naguib notes a new trend where yachts ranging from seven to 28-metres are increasingly navigating in convoys for enhanced security. Naguib further explained that he had four clients including the 54.86-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Purpose54.86m (179'12&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2005">Purpose</a> that initially planned to cruise in Dubai but due to the situation stayed in Egypt.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300281/image/large-b7ed5e2e8a066afb5da0fcc8d37828f9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300281"> Consequently, many superyachts have opted for the route via South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope to reach Europe, minimising risk due to regional conflicts. Jan Maarten Boissevain from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sevenstar Yacht Transport B.V. (Company)">Sevenstar Yacht Transport</a>, a company specialising in the global transportation of luxury yachts to the Gulf area, explained that there has been an increase in yachts being transported rather than navigating independently due to the conflict in the Gulf of Aden. He further notes that the traditional route through the Suez Canal and Gulf of Aden has been rerouted via South Africa, significantly lengthening transit times and elevating costs. He states, “For some yachts, it is feasible, and we have seen several make the trip”.Despite the growing preference for rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope, both Harris and Al Hashimi noted that some owners are reluctant to accept the delays and increased travel time associated with navigating around the Cape. These owners still aim to have their yachts in the Mediterranean in time for the summer season. Moreover, they are willing to pay increased war-risk premiums and offer additional incentives to captains and crews. “As long as conditions remain stable and reasonable, we are committed to supporting the vessels and their crews, ensuring their safety throughout the journey”, affirmed Harris.When responding to the concern of piracy posing a serious threat to vessels cruising around South Africa, both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sevenstar Yacht Transport B.V. Additionally, they assured that standard safety measures are implemented for all their routings across worldwide regions.Impact on the supply chain for superyacht production:&nbsp;The Suez Canal serves as the shortest link between Asia and Europe. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), approximately 15 percent of global maritime trade volume typically passes through it. This route is crucial for the global supply chain involved in superyacht production, facilitating the transport of essential supplies for yacht building between the East and Europe. For instance, the majority of steel, an essential component in superyacht construction, is sourced from the East. Australia, a major producer of iron ore, sends this commodity to China for processing. The processed steel is then shipped to Europe via the Suez Canal. Moreover, significant components such as engines, generators, and electronics are transported from Europe to the East.The IMF further notes that attacks on vessels in the Red Sea area have reduced traffic through the Suez Canal, extending delivery times by an average of 10 days or more. He states, "We primarily don't use steel or aluminium, although we do incorporate some components made from these materials. Bellotto also mentioned that whilst &nbsp;some shipments require circumnavigation around South Africa, these changes have not yet impacted <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>'s operations.While it appears that the regional instability has not significantly influenced superyacht production as initially feared, Eliopoulos identified a key logistical challenge: procuring paint, which unlike engines that do not have a shelf life and are imported from Europe through dealer networks, has limited shelf life and has been problematic. Both Ian Harris and Yousuf Al Hashimi have highlighted a significant challenge: as summer approaches, rising seawater temperatures—which can drastically affect yacht engineering—compel many larger superyachts to consider leaving the area. At this moment, we are not facing significant problems from the supply chain side, but potential difficulties could arise in the near future.” It is crucial to monitor whether the situation worsens and if this could further negatively affect the supply chain in Europe.

Built by the Genoa-based shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ansaldo (Company)">Ansaldo</a> for Italian state-owned company Regia Azienda Monopolio Banane (RAMB), the vessel features exterior design and naval architecture by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ansaldo (Company)">Ansaldo</a> and boasts a robust steel hull and lines typical of her period, with distinct features reminiscent of military functionality.Originally destined for service in the banana trade between Africa and Italy under the name Ramb III, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3870" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galeb-T117.3m (384'10&quot;)Ansaldo1939">Galeb</a>'s journey took an unexpected turn with the outbreak of World War II. The grand vessel, instead of ferrying bananas, found herself under the command of the Italian army, reborn as an auxiliary cruiser with a newfound role in the theatre of war transporting meat for the Italian army in Libya.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310593/image/large-b3793fd1459694b7f54975ca36a4475e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310593">Amidst the tumult of war, Ramb III faced a perilous encounter while in the Libyan port of Benghazi when she was struck by torpedoes from the British submarine, HMS Triumph. Unsunk, the yacht survived the attack and sailed 900 miles towards Sicily, Italy, before being hauled to San Marco shipyard in Trieste.As Italy capitulated to the Nazi’s in September 1943, her identity was once again changed. From here, the Germans completed her repairs and converted her into a minelayer named Kiebitz – the German word for the Lapwing bird, whose crest indicates a royal status and whose long, sharp beak is a symbol of his violent nature. During this time, Kiebitz is alleged to have laid over 5,000 mines in the northern Adriatic area.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310594/image/large-bd8ec418bbda3d965516d051dfcc0c25.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310594">On 25 November 1944, the vessel faced a formidable setback, hit in an Allied aircraft strike while anchored in Rijeka, Croatia, sinking the yacht. In 1948 the Brodospas supply ship company came to Kiebitz's aid and the vessel was hauled to the surface, using a pioneering technology based on air cylinders, and transported to the Pula-based shipbuilding company, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/880" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Uljanik Shipyard (Company)">Uljanik</a>. There, against the odds, a meticulous reconstruction took place, breathing new life into the resilient vessel which was relaunched in 1952.&nbsp;She was first transformed into a naval training ship, where she found a new role within the ranks of the Yugoslav Navy, before she was used as a residential yacht and sailed under the name she retains to this day – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3870" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galeb-T117.3m (384'10&quot;)Ansaldo1939">Galeb</a> – which translates in several languages to seagull.&nbsp;Despite a pitfalled start to life, the yacht soon garnered distinguished status among the people of Yugoslavia, when Marshal Josip Broz Tito, often revered as the alleged 'Father' of the Yugoslav Republic, was seen conducting an inspection of the boats in the Yugoslav Navy from her deck in 1952. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310588/image/large-3b03f5a2adfd180ea8680447e31bcec1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310588">Elevated to an iconic status, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3870" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galeb-T117.3m (384'10&quot;)Ansaldo1939">Galeb</a> became synonymous with Tito's leadership and the pride of the nation.
