Cyclos III to be sold in blind bid auction

Still widely regarded as the world’s benchmark for high performance sailing, the yacht that launched the superyacht career of multi-award winning designer Andrew Winch, the ground-breaking Royal Huisman ketch Cyclos III is now to be sold by William Bishop, Head of YPI Sailing, in a Blind Auction closing on 8 May 2014.

After 35 years of rewarding yachting, the owner of Cyclos III is now retiring and appropriately for such as a unique and ground breaking yacht, Cyclos III will now be sold in a Blind Bid Auction closing on Thursday 8th May.

Built in 1990 by the world’s pre-eminent shipyard, Royal Huisman, with masterful naval architecture executed by the great Ron Holland and showing off entirely innovative interiors by Andrew Winch, Cyclos III was the ground-breaking yacht of her generation and she remains timeless even after 20 years.

As any yachtsman passionate about sailing will tell you, Cyclos III is craftsmanship, innovation and design at its very best,” says YPI broker and Head of YPI Sailing, William Bishop. “Cyclos III represents the largest, most powerful sailing yachts of her generation – pushing the boundaries of modern yacht design from both a technical and aesthetic perspective.

Described by Showboats as “the yacht with the most glamorous pedigree”, Cyclos III was created to operate under sail and at anchor without the encumbrances of continuously running generators. Cyclos III harnesses the power of stored energy through a massive bank of gel cell batteries that allows for a hard day of sailing but importantly a quiet, ‘generator-free’, night’s sleep.

Cyclos III is a ketch built for those passionate about sailing and being at sea,” says Will. “She is exceptionally comfortable, naturally ventilated and when it comes to performance, she has power in abundance.

Before joining YPI, Will sailed on Cyclos III as mate and subsequently as captain so he knows the yacht well. “She is truly one of the most exciting yachts to sail,” he says. “Whether that be in the challenging conditions off Oregon or powered up in the Caribbean Trades…she is a yacht you never forget.”

The captain to whom Will eventually handed the yacht over, Captain Law, also praised her highly: “I was on Velsheda for three years,” he is quoted as saying, “Cyclos III beats her hands down for exhilarating sailing.

Through this blind auction,” concludes Will, “there is now a unique opportunity for someone passionate about sailing not only to own a ground breaking yacht but also to have her refitted and upgraded to their own tastes and requirements ready for a new era of sailing.
