As the yachting industry begins to take alternative fuels seriously, Heikki Bergman, CEO and design manager of start-up company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8768" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Propulsion House (Company)">Propulsion House</a>, is several steps ahead. His company has developed a compact, modular methanol-electric propulsion system for yachts up to 70 metres that challenges the big marine technology brands.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390298/image/large-6f876876617a86ea1297b4c7d5007042.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390298">Drawing on more than two decades of experience in marine electrical propulsion, Heikki Bergman brings an engineering-driven approach to hybrid systems, with a sharp focus on real-world viability, space efficiency, and the practical constraints of small and mid-size vessels.“There’s good will in the market,” he says, “but not many customers or shipyards truly understand what they’re buying when it comes to electric or alternative-fuel systems. That’s where things often fall apart.”Now, Bergman and his team have unveiled a hybrid system he claims is capable of delivering over 5,000 nautical miles of range using methanol reformers, hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, and lightweight electric pod propulsion – all within the general arrangement footprint of an existing 45-metre, steel-hulled explorer hull designed by Frank Neubelt.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390299/image/large-087f0ae7e1a2668b35e761bf7c22a0db.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390299">Scaling downBergman’s journey began at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6143" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ABB Group (Company)">ABB</a>, the Finnish leader in electrification and automation technology, where he worked on large commercial projects across Europe, particularly in the passenger vessel segment. In 2015, he identified a knowledge gap in the smaller vessel markets: while electrical and hybrid systems were becoming standard on larger ships, few people understood how to scale them down effectively for smaller yachts.&nbsp;"The big players don’t cater well to anything below 1 megawatt per propeller," he explains. "They come with massive project organisations and million-euro tickets, which just doesn’t work for yachts below 70 metres. We start from seven horsepower, up to 600 kilowatt."He founded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8768" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Propulsion House (Company)">Propulsion House</a> in 2017 as a consultancy, but it quickly evolved into a product development company. The firm now works across multiple sectors – including oil and gas – but yachting remains a core focus. The team doubled in size last year and is expected to grow again in 2026.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390300/image/large-701d98e76c4b8100d4437b449c0de308.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390300">Time to RethinkThe in-house propulsion system is a methanol-electric hybrid setup using the existing 45-metre explorer hull as a baseline that began with the team asking a simple but critical question: could a vessel of this size achieve 5,000 nautical miles of range using alternative fuels, without compromising usable interior volume? The answer: Yes, by completely rethinking how propulsion integrates with vessel design.At the heart of the system is the trademarked DeeCee Microgrid – a methanol-fuel-cell architecture designed for endurance, redundancy and modular installation. The system includes: six methanol reformers, which convert a methanol/water mixture into hydrogen and CO₂; six 200 kilowatt hydrogen fuel cells, fed by the reformers to generate electricity; and two 600 kilowatt battery banks, offering load balancing, peak shaving, and full-electric operation in port or during silent cruising.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390301/image/large-09f5baddc586600638d912e42f93dd0f.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390301">All the system components – fuel cells, batteries, converters – are already commercially available. Combined, they enable propulsion via two 600 kilowatt electric pods, with no shaft lines or central switchboards. Instead, the vessel uses a distributed DC network through localised electrical control units – each managing its zone independently and able to switch within milliseconds in case of blackout.“We’ve eliminated the need for a switchboard room altogether,” says Bergman. “This frees up interior volume, reduces cabling, and improves safety and redundancy.”The reforming process produces a controlled volume of CO₂, which the system can capture and store onboard for recycling. The volume of this captured CO₂ is significantly lower than from internal combustion engines – about 40-60 percent less than a diesel generator. Moreover, when taking into production methods of green methanol and e-methanol, some of which actually consume CO2 rather than release it into the air, the overall CO2 emission reduction is even higher.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390305/image/large-8b7413485de1c405fa96aac8b215fe00.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390305">Small, Light &amp; SmartPerhaps the most radical part of the concept is the proprietary Pulling-e Propulsion pod design. It resembles a torpedo: long, narrow, and hollow, with a stationary internal body, an outer rotating propeller shell and a 2-bladed propeller offering a good balance of efficiency and drag. Containing a permanent magnet synchronous motor and scalable from 7-600 kilowatt per propeller, there is no shaft, no gearbox, and minimal mechanical complexity. The pod can be steerable for shallow water use, or fixed with a rudder integrated into the strut that connects it to the hull.&nbsp;The unit is designed to be modular and installation-agnostic. It can be fixed horizontally to the hull, retrofitted into an old rudder socket, or even fitted with lift-enhancing struts to improve hydrodynamic flow. Unlike traditional azimuthing thrusters, which rotate 360 degrees, the pods limit steering angles but compensates via bi-directional rotation. The result is full-vector thrust control, achieved with a simpler, lighter system.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390304/image/large-1e7154665ec390b5c89b7ed5b892f2e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390304">This method also benefits noise reduction. The methanol-electric propulsion is already quiet, so the remaining main source of noise is from propeller-generated pressure pulses hitting the hull. The propellers, positioned far aft as far outboard as possible away from the hull, significantly reduce this underwater radiated noise—a growing concern for marine ecosystems.The concept isn’t just theoretical. Cambridge University’s Energy boat challenge team recognised the potential and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8768" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Propulsion House (Company)">Propulsion House</a> has been working with Marin’s top designers on the propeller optimisation, using a 15-kilowatt test unit to refine efficiency. The propellers were optimised using PropArt and PROCAL computations. A speed-power prediction based on the resistance was provided, and additional analysis was carried out in terms of steering forces and cavitation behaviour.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390303/image/large-fe5f36bdbe69c88da2bda09491ac7329.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390303">“We achieved 89 percent propeller efficiency – among the highest on the market,” says Bergman. “And when we scale up to the size used on yachts, efficiency actually increases due to the larger central hole in the propeller. And that’s just the first iteration available.”The system is also suited for retrofits. In theory at least, shaft lines could be removed entirely and the new propulsion unit installed into the existing rudder sockets, reducing the need for invasive hull perforations. The structural load is carried in a way similar to rudder mechanics, with reinforcement achieved by increasing material thickness inside the torpedo's cooling pipe. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/390302/image/large-279388f3d090554f024470e1514e9ec4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/390302">A New Design OrderPerhaps most radical is the company’s approach to vessel design itself. “We start from the underwater section,” Bergman explains. “First the hull, then the propeller location, and then everything else. Not the other way around.”This inverted design process contrasts with the traditional method of selecting off-the-shelf propulsion systems first, which often forces compromises in hull shape, hydrodynamics and interior layout.With partners already on board for further testing in 2026, and interest growing among shipyards and owners, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8768" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Propulsion House (Company)">Propulsion House</a> is positioning itself not just as a technology provider, but as a strategic design partner. By simplifying systems, reducing space usage, offering real redundancy, and embracing cleaner fuels, Bergman believes a better class of hybrid yacht is not only possible – it’s ready to build. “There’s no fantasy here,” says Bergman. “This could be built tomorrow.”&nbsp;

The superyacht sector is often touted as a hotbed of innovation, but not many new ideas make it into the mainstream. From innovative rigs and biomimicry to topological hull design and energy recovery, they need owners with deep pockets willing to take a leap of faith – and that’s easier said than done. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361651/image/large-f85f6aadfc87033d06eec52838e00f3c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361651">When the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> first took flight in 2006 she proved a point: that when a pioneering owner – in this case Tom Perkins – is willing to push boundaries with designers and engineers to explore innovative ideas, the superyacht industry can realise ground-breaking solutions that have either laid dormant for decades, or open up new tech for future decades.Fast forward almost 20 years and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> also teaches us that even with proof of concept, some ideas still struggle to break through to the mainstream. The Dynarig, developed from the original 1960s concept designs by Wilhelm Prölss, wouldn’t be repeated until the launch of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a> in 2017. The confirmation last year of a 57-metre Dynarig catamaran in build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Echo Yachts (Company)">Echo Yachts</a> in Australia only highlights the slow uptake.&nbsp;“Now that there are two demonstrators for the Dynarig we see momentum catching up,” says Mark Leslie-Miller, partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> that developed the Dynarig together with Damon Roberts of Insensys and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>. “I still wouldn’t go as far as to say that the entire industry is getting more adventurous, although I’d like to think that is the case.”In the same year that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> was delivered, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> unveiled the first of its Future Concept designs at the Monaco Yacht Show. Developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt Naval Architects</a>, the idea behind the ongoing series was to develop concepts that blended <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> yacht-building experience with the boldest visions that have yet to see the light of day. From the beginning these concepts were required to meet one key criterion: they had to be buildable within five years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361648/image/large-bc6b13e7e5a07984361900f624d3ec88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361648">From morphing decks and clean propulsion systems to reimagining space design and underwater viewing lounges, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> concepts have covered a lot of ground and quickly proved their value. The F-stream concept, for example, set the stage for the energy-efficient drivetrain on Breathe in 2010, which in turn was a direct inspiration for the hybrid-powered <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5598" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Savannah83.5m (273'11&quot;)Feadship2015">Savannah</a> just five years later.&nbsp;Fauna and FloraBreathe also drew on another major theme in everything from its superstructure shell design to its propulsors and appendages: biomimicry. Biomimetics – drawing on nature’s evolved solutions to inform structural engineering, energy efficiency and other elements – can be traced back to ancient times. Since then, it has gathered pace – the Eiffel Tower is said to be based on the human femur; the Crystal Palace built for London’s Great Exhibition in 1851 drew on the structure of waterlily leaves to support its 300,000 panes of glass; and Velcro was invented when Swiss engineer George de Mestral studied the small thistle-like burrs that became stuck in his dog’s fur.Breathe’s superstructure took the concept of skin temperature variations found in a zebra’s stripes to encourage natural air flow and ventilation, but the design also borrowed from marine fauna in its underbody, applying the idea of tubercles – the knobbly protuberances found on the leading edge of humpback whales’ pectoral fins – to increase lift and efficiency of the rudders.Tubercles have been shown to act as passive-flow control devices in wing form that improve performance and manoeuvrability, and as such are being explored for a range of applications from wing design to turbine blades. For Frank Fish, marine biologist and professor, the first awakening came in the early 1980s when he noticed the leading-edge bumps on a humpback whale model in a gift shop, which made no sense compared to what he knew about fluid mechanics and having a straight leading edge. Intrigued after studying the fins, he reached out to mechanical and aerospace engineer Philip Watts.&nbsp;“I had already been working in biomechanics so understood the importance of biomimicry,” says Watts. “So I ran some fluid dynamic simulations of wings with and without tubercles and found they increased the lift, and simultaneously reduced the drag – and that’s a spectacular achievement. Tubercles focus the flow between the bumps, and that focused flow helps keep the flow attached to the wing while also helping isolate the lift between the tubercles.”The pair joined forces with late entrepreneur Stephen Dewar to form WhalePower Corporation in 2005. Further testing on wing prototypes showed 20 per cent energy savings, improved efficiency, more stability and greater durability.It’s not hard to see the potential applications in yachts, from stabiliser fins to HVAC fans – and propellers. Various research projects on the latter have shown the potential benefits, particularly with regard to cavitation, which both damages propeller blades over time and is a key factor in the propagation of underwater radiated noise (URN) – now a key focus of marine environmental regulations. For example, numbers published by the ABM Hydro (Applied Biometrics Marine Hydrodynamics) group at the University of Newcastle show reduction in cavitation volume in a ducted propeller by up to 50 per cent, while improving propulsive efficiency by up to 6.5 per cent in heavy-cavitating conditions.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361646/image/large-4facd959dfdf51c7ad17a2b7a326422c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361646">Tubercles are not the only bio-inspiration making their way into yachting propulsors. In early 2023 Oceanco unveiled its 131-metre concept Aeolus, which features <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6143" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ABB Group (Company)">ABB’s</a> Dynafin electric propulsion technology. The Dynafin is a cycloidal propeller system that was inspired by the dynamic motions of a whale’s fluke. It generates thrust using profiled vertical blades that rotate around the axis of a disc plate and around their own vertical axis to change the angle of attack in sync with the rotation of the plate, so that each blade can provide thrust in any direction. Adrien Thoumazeau of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a> calculates that the Dynafin would save 10 to 15 per cent of fuel on an Atlantic crossing for Aeolus compared to an optimised azipod system. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> also prescribed Dynafins for its 2023 Dunes concept and is working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6143" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ABB Group (Company)">ABB</a> engineers to develop improvements for better integration in a yacht.&nbsp;The VSP draws on a concept first developed nearly a century ago by Austrian engineer Ernst Schneider, who was inspired by the movement of fish. Cycloidal drives like the Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) are a simpler version insofar as the individual blades are fixed. VSPs are in use on working vessels and have been proposed for the 70-metre Project Master conversion at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">Icon Yachts</a>, but Dynafins potentially have more applications in superyachts. As part of an electric propulsion power system, they are also fully compatible with zero-emission technologies.&nbsp;“Due to the individual blade control you can mimic the whale-tail motion, providing the efficiency gain when sailing at the most probable speeds of 12 to 15 knots,” says Giedo Loeff, head of research and development at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>. “The VSP works well for low-speed applications and high bollard pulls, like tugboat operations.”&nbsp;Formally unveiled in May 2023, it remains to be seen if the Dynafin will catch on, but it is further evidence of the opportunities buried in millions of years of evolution.Skeleton StructuresIn 2015, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> and Claydon Reeves unveiled a striking 46-metre sailing yacht concept called Exo, which featured extensive use of glass in the hull thanks to an extraordinary hull structure quite unlike traditional frames and longitudinals. The idea originally came from a German intern specialising in topology optimisation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361644/image/large-a3f603df772cec0588d5b591bb16aed1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361644">“He got inspired and asked if we could see an application for this cool new technology,” &nbsp;says Leslie-Miller. “It led to us tackling that structural challenge of having a large piece of glass in the topsides and deck and using topology optimisation to design around the stresses inherent in a sailing yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361649/image/large-76bcca2920aac1749a6690880f76b549.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361649">Topology optimisation is a mathematical approach that optimises material use within a given design space for a given set of loads and boundary conditions. By combining this with the idea of bio-inspired design, it is possible to create unconventional structures that combine light weight with structural strength. The study partner for Exo was the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany, whose research has focused on the complex shell structures of diatoms, unicellular planktonic organisms, and their application in structural design. The result was an initial implementation in 2005 of ELiSE (Evolutionary Lightweight Structure Engineering) as a systematic approach to design. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra</a> team inputted data on load paths through components such as the stays, shrouds and keel box, and then let the software do its magic. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361650/image/large-d3c964305471d63f17a7908b0b70b8d1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361650">“What we saw very clearly was that a lot of the force goes into the beam shelf, which is generally a very stiff element,” explains Leslie-Miller. “The challenge was that we wanted to have a big glass opening across that boundary, so the topology optimisation was used to lead the forces around that glass. From that we did a full FEM analysis of the structure, which showed that this was a very effective and efficient way to make this particular concept feasible.”Leslie-Miller admits that the combination of topology optimisation and biomimicry for the overall hull structure won’t replace conventional design outright, in part also because of the added cost, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have interesting applications aside from alternative hull designs. One area might be large bimini structures, which need to be lightweight but can be tricky to design because there are several load conditions to consider. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361643/image/large-6fa88f4b3be1f9c5529d29febdd8b2b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361643">“I think wherever there is a clearly defined set of load cases it could be super interesting,” he says. “For example, in a retractable keel that always presents a structural challenge with clearly defined load cases such as grounding with the keel fully down. You could optimise the structure around that load path to make it as lightweight as possible.”Ride the WavesWith energy efficiency and carbon neutrality ever higher on the agenda, Giedo Loeff is proposing the Hammerhead – a pair of retractable fins located aft of the anchors that serve as stabilisers, but also harness wave energy to feed into the yacht’s grid. The idea features alongside the methanol hybrid fuel cell and battery power system in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> latest concept project, 75-metre C.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361654/image/large-2de9a6282637ddae101f7c201b682a6e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361654">“When I was working at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) back in 2007, I was investigating how to regenerate wave energy,” says Loeff. “There are ship’s motions that are excited in waves, and the Holy Grail is to be able to reduce those motions and generate electricity at the same time. But designing a system like that is not so simple, which is what this concept is about.”Complicating the design is the fact that the fins have two axes of articulation – rotational, which is the conventional way a stabiliser fin adjusts its angle of attack, but also vertical, which provides the motion that can drive a generator.&nbsp;“There’s a massive force associated with the movement, because in the foreship where the fins are located their motion relative to the water will be quite substantial in any significant sea of, say, one to two metres, which is a very probable scenario,” says Loeff.&nbsp;There are further benefits of the system, because besides reducing motions and generating electricity, you’re also reducing resistance – energy is lost in the motion of a ship, so reducing that motion means less propulsion power is needed. Loeff’s solution would primarily be for use under way as opposed to at anchor, and it would be a standalone active system that would negate the need for separate stabilisers.&nbsp;“The mechanical design presents the difficulty, because you would &nbsp;have very high torque and forces acting on the bearing systems,” he says. “You would need to control the angle of attack of the fins to prevent a stall and ventillation, and that would need to be active control based on the motion, so it won’t be easy, but it’s not something we feel is impossible.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361655/image/large-ec523e473842f77cdd02df4d25d6b0bd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361655">Loeff suggests that yachts between 40- and 100-metres are the ideal platform for the technology as they fit into the typical wavelength of seas that yachts most commonly come across. The predictions for energy produced are also striking: 60 to 80 kilowatts for a yacht like C in the seas it would encounter on an Atlantic crossing, plus a further gain in propulsive energy. The demand for more eco-friendly practices is currently sweeping across all industries globally. So it perhaps comes as no surprise that shipyards are getting in on the eco-friendly action. Shipyards and builders aren’t only looking to implement more sustainable designs on the yachts they’re building, but also within the yards themselves.&nbsp;Whether it’s driven by an ethical, reputational or even economic mindset, showing a willingness to be more ‘green’ is essential for modern-day yacht building. However, this is often easier said than done. So, because actions speak louder than words, we investigated what tangible changes some of the industry’s most influential players are making in-house to nurture a more sustainable industry. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69894/image/large-620ae2fb94c7ef1d7f948ef96bb483a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69894">Becoming energy efficient&nbsp;Sustainability has always been a priority for the Austrian company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent-Yachts</a>. “As a shipyard which started its operations building solar-electric yachts, reducing our carbon footprint and striving for sustainability is part of our DNA,” explains Michael Kohler, CEO and founder. In addition to optimising the production and consumption of energy in real time, eco-policies must also look to the future.&nbsp;“The modularity of our components ensures that the individual components can be replaced and reused easily, which contributes significantly to the reduction of electrical waste,” Kohler explains. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a> are not the only ones advocating for renewable energy, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a>’s Managing Director Rose Damen reveals: “At our Vlissingen City yard, we have more than 5,000 solar panels generating power – a peak of 1.67 MWp. It covers about 30% of our annual electricity needs, plus we’re introducing more capacity, including wind power.”&nbsp;There are alternate ways for shipyards to confront their eco-responsibilities besides utilising wind and solar power, as Sales Director Till von Krause from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> explains: “We went through all possible energy losses – insulating heating lines and buildings, and changing the large doors in our sheds to air-cushioned doors with insulation.” He also notes how getting serious about reducing a company’s carbon footprint requires some self-reflection and holding yourself to account: “The first step is knowing your carbon footprint and understanding the impact of it. The second step is to put this in contrast with other industries and complying with standards.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/111160/image/large-b92e524da281fe8c3ffc9da48e5c89eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/111160">Eco by designThe issue of sustainability should be tackled directly from the source, as shipyards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> demonstrate. “In addition to building efficient yachts, the Heesen shipyard is always exploring renewable and alternative energy sources” explains <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>’s Director of Operations Rick van de Wetering.&nbsp;“This includes harnessing solar power and using Patented Sun Tracker technology to automatically dim the interior LED lighting to avoid wasting energy on days where natural sunlight is sufficient, therefore reducing the shed’s lighting requirements by 25%.”&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> has taken a similar tack, installing &nbsp;“photovoltaic and sophisticated solar thermal systems to save on gas consumption,” a spokesperson from the yard explains. “The systems we have installed for heating domestic hot water allow us to save up to 50% of the methane gas, and, following the shed renovation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> has significantly improved the insulation to create an efficient thermal coat both in terms of heat dispersion and acoustics. ” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180190/image/large-b54e57fcba7b334f253d3103dc169080.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180190">The future of sustainabilityIn reflecting on what role yards play in prioritising and promoting sustainable methods of building superyachts, there seems to be a clear consensus that <a href="http://www.imo.org/en/OurWork/Safety/Regulations/Pages/Default.aspx" target="_blank">IMO regulations</a> (safety regulations for different types of ships set by the International Maritime Organisation) represent the bare minimum: “Complying with IMO regulations today is not enough, as a shipyard we take it as our responsibility to promote eco-friendly vessels specifically when it comes to the main propulsion system.&nbsp;In the past, we’ve worked directly with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> to develop the hybrid propulsion system for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4450" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sailing Yacht A142.81m (468'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2017">Sailing Yacht A</a> and most recently we worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">ABB</a> to develop the DC-bus [diesel-electric Azipod propulsion] system for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a>,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>’s Sales and Marketing Director, Fadi Pataq says. So how can shipyards ensure they're hitting the right targets when it comes to minimising their carbon footprint? “Forward-thinking!” he explains. “We have a young and experienced R&amp;D team which is constantly researching and reviewing green technologies that we can include in our future proposals to clients. We are proud to promote innovation.”While the eco-policies enacted by shipyards today represent a realistic starting point for a more green future in yachting, demands and expectations from all sides – governmental, consumer and supplier – are only going to increase.
