In addition to acting as s stern thruster when manoeuvring, Liara also accelerates much faster with her propeller retracted according to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design (Company)">MMYD</a>.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/96755/image/large-3199ae5f02f44515bae713d26993884b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96755">Under engine power, &nbsp;the main engine is offset and drives the RPS via a 90 degree bevel gearbox. &nbsp;With a large lithium ion battery bank Liara can run in ‘silent’ mode for up to eight hours with all ‘hotel’ services running, including air conditioning. He has played a central role in the sale and refit of several notable vintage motor yachts over the past 20 years, including&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2248" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Bird31.59m (103'8&quot;)">Blue Bird</a>&nbsp;(1938), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">Nahlin</a>&nbsp;(1930),<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne</a> (1937), and now 71-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida 1929</a>. Built by Krupp Germaniawerft for the millionaire yeast magnate Max Fleischmann, the yacht has sailed under a number of high-profile owners since her launch nearly 90 years ago. Earlier this year, she was delivered to her latest owner following an extensive 18-month restoration at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, UK. SuperYacht Times talked with Nick Edmiston and broker Alex Busher, who acted as liaison between Edmiston and the new owner, about the challenges associated with restoring and managing classic yachts. We began by asking how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida</a> came to change hands in 2016.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41790/image/large-3fd05144629a31880d61507719312e72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41790">Nick: I’d known the yacht for years, ever since she was called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Sarina</a> and owned by Loel Guinness, who spared no expense to make sure she remained in excellent shape. The last owner had been hanging onto her with the thought of taking a long cruise, but that never happened. After several years when she was effectively mothballed, he decided to sell her and we brokered the deal with the new owner. Like all restorations, the worklist grew as the project progressed, but he was determined to bring her back into top condition with a view to chartering and taking her around the world.&nbsp;Alex: The restoration was really needed. She’d undergone a previous refit in Turkey in 2000, which hadn’t addressed some of the major issues. After a survey of the hull, we very quickly realised the underwater profile would have to be stripped down to the frames for the first time in almost 90 years. The fact she was still intact is a testament to Germany’s shipbuilding prowess, but we ended up replacing the tanks and 60 percent of the hull, using over 100 tons of marine-grade steel in the process. At one point there were 70 welders working on her: when the old funnel was removed and engine room gutted, you could look down through the decks and see the bottom of the dry dock.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41793/image/large-8c32b0bf15e6a5c652a2cda1ff3183d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41793">Why the decision to go to Pendennis for the refit?Alex: Several reasons. Besides having a slot available, Pendennis has experience of refitting other classic motor yachts, including<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">&nbsp;Malahne</a> and<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fair Lady42.0m (137'10&quot;)">&nbsp;Fair Lady</a>. They had also completed a short refit of the yacht in 2011 when she was called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Dona Amélia</a>, so had a lot of prior knowledge. Brexit had just kicked off and sterling had taken a hit, so the exchange rate was a consideration. Another factor was that the yard is very discreet and a bit off-radar down in Falmouth, which suited the owner who wished to maintain his privacy.&nbsp;Considering the high cost of restoration and maintenance, what kind of owner decides to invest in a classic yacht?Nick: &nbsp;Someone who knows how to appreciate tradition and elegance; someone who leads a very stylish lifestyle and has a passion for maintaining an asset of historical significance. That’s not everyone by any means. And once they’ve spent the money, they’re not going to recover it immediately, if at all. In the long-term, the paint job might be a bit cheaper as you don’t have a high-gloss metallic finish, but they require constant attention and tend to have big crews, so that’s an added cost. There’s definitely more work involved and you have to have a loyal crew prepared to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/41792/image/large-8bca09e70d639b0d3767e1d759409cde.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41792">Alex: With classic yachts, it’s all about their history: the stories behind the owners and the places they’ve been to. We tend to think of explorers as a new trend, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida</a> was originally built for Fleischmann with an 8,000-mile range for exploring the Pacific and was named after the native Haida people of Alaska and British Columbia. The current owner had been following her for the last 15 years or so, and it was either this yacht or none at all. He wanted character and soul, not a replica or a new build. It’s a bit like living in a stately home rather than a brand new hotel, which is why he wanted to keep the original Krupp engines, the beating heart of the vessel and the oldest working diesels on any yacht today. They have no gearbox, so to reverse they have to be stopped and restarted using the old telegraphs still linking the bridge to the engine room. Stripping and rebuilding them with custom-made parts was a huge job in itself.&nbsp;How did you decide on Adam Lay for the new interior design?Alex: The owner had very clear ideas of what he wanted and had spent a lot of time researching online and in magazines. He put together four large mood books of his own and toured antique fairs all over Europe for period accessories, which is still ongoing. But we needed someone to fine-tune his ideas and bring it all together to produce a traditional décor with a nod to contemporary lifestyles. Adam had been involved in the refit of the J-Class&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)">Endeavour</a>&nbsp;and is a very good listener. The owner liked his low-key style and attention to detail, but what swung it was when Adam started sketching in front of him. He was very impressed with his draughtsmanship skills.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/41791/image/large-35a900be03ce0739b16f2783f969fabb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41791">What concessions were made to modernity during the refit?Alex: Although the owner wanted a sympathetic restoration, he was aware of modern charter requirements. So a hot tub was added on the top deck and a hammam spa on the lower deck, the galley was upgraded, new AC installed, along with new custom tenders [restored to their original position amidships] and new cranes for launching them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haida 192971.1m (233'3&quot;)">Haida 1929&nbsp;</a>is the only classic motor yacht of her size available for charter with accommodation for 12 guests and a private owner’s deck. There was a sister ship to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shemara64.68m (212'2&quot;)">Shemara</a> that went to Japan, and another lovely old motor yacht that once belonged to the Courtauld textile family that went to Sierra Leone as a presidential yacht. Sadly the former was broken up and the latter sank before my people could get to them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2841" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nahlin91.44m (300'0&quot;)">Nahlin</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malahne50.29m (164'12&quot;)">Malahne</a> probably wouldn’t be around today if I hadn’t stepped in. The challenge is finding the right owner in time and then a yard with the wherewithal to restore them, which is not cheap by any means. Ultimately, you have to have a passion for it.

Haida 1929: talking classic yachts with Edmiston

Finnish shipbuilder Baltic Yachts have had a busy couple of years, with recent superyacht deliveries including the 23.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bill and Me 23.77m (77'12&quot;)">Bill and Me</a> and the highly-anticipated 53.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Gin VI53.7m (176'2&quot;)">Pink Gin VI</a> last year, and the regatta favourites, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">My Song</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5655" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nikata35.0m (114'10&quot;)">Nikata</a> (39.6-metres and 35-metres respectively) delivered in 2016 and 2015.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17872/image/large-66a5c0799febc00bbcfc0b6b5f62faa7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17872">Looking forward, Baltic’s sheds are keeping just as busy as in previous years. Currently taking shape at their facilities in Jakobstad in western Finland is an exciting addition the growing Baltic fleet: the new Baltic 112 Custom. Coming in at 34-metres and named Liara, the owner and his knowledgeable team tapped the extensive experience of Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design for her exterior design and naval architecture, with Adam Lay Studio responsible for her interior design.&nbsp;Designed for both comfortable, extended cruising around the world as well as for participation in the occasional regatta, just some of her standout features include a large sail plan with square top mainsail, telescopic lifting keel and a high righting-moment configuration. Furthermore, an updated version of Baltic’s proven retractable propulsion unit will be installed to further increase speed by reducing drag when it is in racing mode. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/11925/image/large-17a211bfbb1329d53e47c2b6c371272b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11925">But what really makes the Baltic 112 Custom special is the dedication of her owner and his team, who have learned over the years to take their time when designing and building a new boat, making sure that the final result ticks all of the boxes. Here we talk to her owner, the British sailor Tony Todd, ahead of her scheduled delivery in Spring 2019, to hear about his experience building sailing yachts and his plans to cruise the world with the new Liara.&nbsp;Upon completion, the Baltic 112 will be your fourth yacht sailing under the name Liara. What’s the significance of the name?Well, we have twins: Liam and Lara, so, put them together and you get Liara. This could be my last boat, actually. I’m 70 years old now - I can’t go on forever!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/27546/image/large-5fe56dbdd05df87c8a8f64f6af2a29fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/27546">The previous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Danneskjold32.0m (104'12&quot;)">Liara</a> (now Danneskjold) built by Southern Ocean Marine was 32m, and the Baltic Liara will come in at 34m. Did you ever consider a larger sailing yacht?&nbsp;No, not really. This size range is plenty big enough for me for the rest of my life. She’ll easily allow me to do the things that I want to do. The Baltic Liara is really a progression from the last boat: it’s a learning process. We were originally designing at 32-metres, but by the time we had the drive leg and all other requirements in we ended up at 34-metres. I also wanted two more guest cabins and having the 34-metre allowed me to do that. &nbsp;You’re a big regatta guy, and have competed in numerous races around the world for decades. How do you optimise for both comfortable cruising and performance?I think the design of the Baltic 112 is the lightest boat you can have with all the creature comforts I want to take with me to the other side of the world. Performance boils down to design. We were very keen to fit this new retractable propulsion system, the first of which was seen on the Baltic yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">My Song</a>, in a combined effort between Baltic and Hundested. We were also very keen to try and create a system where we could cruise silently all through the night - but with air-con on. Our solution is one variable speed generator, a high voltage DC bank, and a generator running off the back end of the main engine. It’s not totally unique, but there are not many similar systems out there.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29422/image/large-d7333eb4aacab27cc27d6d063fc95e39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29422">We’ve worked very closely with Cape Horn for CFD work, and North Sails and Southern Spars on the Baltic 112, so it’s very much a team effort of designers, builder and suppliers along with the project manager and our captain. They have extensive knowledge in the racing and cruising scene and are always on top of the latest ideas, so we’ve adopted quite a lot of these small innovations. Small, but they all add up!What do you enjoy about racing?It’s really the adrenaline kick that attracts us to regatta after regatta. No matter how many times you’ve done it, that adrenaline kick is there. It’s not too serious, not too ‘life and death’, just a lot of fun! We’ll probably do two regattas a year from now on.&nbsp;Aside from regatta participation, will you spend a lot of time on board?My wife and I hope to spend a lot of time on the boat now that our two children are off at university. We’re planning on taking her down to New Zealand for the 2020/21 America’s Cup. Having built a boat already in New Zealand, I’ve got a fair bit of experience in the region, so it’s a great opportunity to properly cruise there - which I never did before. We’ll likely take part in the regattas around the time of the Cup… We’ll see!&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23560/image/large-cb4b92eeb7ccfa1407fdc6f996979967.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23560">You’ve never built a boat in Finland before - what attracted you to Baltic?I’ve always wanted to build a boat with Baltic, and after sending the project to tender, we soon realised they were head and shoulders above the rest. The way that they approached the project and the level of professionalism is fantastic - it was a relatively easy decision!With high expectations considered, how has your experience been so far?As the saying goes, I am absolutely over the moon. I’ve got a truly fantastic team behind me, and Baltic are very much part of that. We don’t have confrontations, instead, we work together on solutions to challenges. I am so impressed with them.&nbsp;Malcolm McKeon designed the new Liara - did you previously have experience with McKeon?Malcolm and I go back a long way - he designed a 50’ race boat for me back in ‘93 called Eagle. We worked with Bill Dixon on a previous Liara and he’s a great chap and we love his work, but we just wanted to give Malcolm a go this time.&nbsp;In regards to the rest of the team, my captain stayed on from the previous boat, John Walker, &nbsp;who is a fantastic lad and has been very involved with the project along with our Project Manager, Sebastian Allebrodt of A2B Maritime. Together with Malcolm they were responsible for drawing up the specification for the yacht, which they put a lot of work into. They really did their homework - we’ve learned the lesson the hard way in the past, where we had pressed the ‘GO’ button too early… so it was great to have that experience and make the best decisions for the project this time around.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/11924/image/large-8473b09436b47cfb5ce0e72b62febb7c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11924">Have you visited the yard over the construction process?Well, I don’t do snow, you see… I bloody hate it. So, until my visit in April, I hadn’t been to the yard since September 2017. The first time I went there was in June, so of course, there’s not a lot of darkness or freezing cold weather in Scandinavia at that time of year. But I’m kept up to date with daily photographs, I’m kept abreast of every meeting they have with the minutes, John, Sebastian and I talk a lot, so I’m so happy to tell you that this build is a very painless process. From June onwards I’ll go there every six weeks or so until she’s finished. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/21122/image/large-d9a54f13639e1eb9750c03e2d7ed47b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21122">So you’ve already told us that you probably won’t build another sailing yacht… Have you ever considered a motor yacht?In a word: no! It’s just not my cup of tea. With a sailing yacht, you’re presented with a total challenge - you have to actually do something. I’ve always found that for me, going sailing was the only way I could really switch off from an intense career. Yachting was - and still is - the ultimate unwinder.&nbsp;There’s also an incredible sailing community, and I’ve formed real, amazing friendships with industry professionals and my fellow yachties over the years. Tony Todd discusses his next sailing yacht: the new Custom Baltic 112

Earlier this week Baltic Yachts completed the first and crucial stage of the construction on its new 112 fast cruiser sloop in Jakobstad, Finland when the yacht’s full-carbon hull was released from its mould at the shipyard.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/27546/image/large-5fe56dbdd05df87c8a8f64f6af2a29fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/27546"> The hull will now be prepared for the joining of the superstructure as construction continues which is expected to come to an end in the spring of 2019. Project MM341, as she is known, is designed by Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design. The interiors are the work of Adam Lay Studio which is said to match the yacht’s world-cruising abilities with a homely and functional style.Commissioned by an experienced client, the yacht will boast several innovative features when completed such as a telescopic lifting keel and Baltic’s own rotating Retractable Propulsion System.

Her hull is built in a two-part mould for easier access, thus enabling faster and more accurate construction.
