Allegro Yacht has shared the first images of the 35.4-metre in-build Allegro Flybridge 116 yacht.

As of early 2025, builders from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 538 of the 6,022 operating yachts over 30 metres worldwide, representing a share of 8.9%. This positions the region as the third-largest superyacht construction area globally, following Europe (including Turkey) and North America. Over the past decade, the region's share has in fact increased to 9.9%, with Asia-Pacific builders delivering 168 of the 1,684 yachts completed between 2015 and 2024.While Zhuhai is often considered a key hub for yacht building in China, the province of Fujian has been growing and is now home to shipyards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegro Yacht (Company)">Allegro Yacht</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358539/image/large-96c6e77fde347c5b1dbd7d239bed6d49.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358539">SuperYacht Times sat down with Chris Zhang, Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegro Yacht (Company)">Allegro Yacht</a>, to discuss the evolution of this family-owned shipyard, its current projects and the broader challenges facing yacht manufacturing in China.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358533/image/large-1852f54ea61fa9732cd2a61c54e18c7e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358533">When was Allegro Yacht founded and how has the shipyard evolved since its inception?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegro Yacht (Company)">Allegro Yacht</a> was founded in 2006 by my father and uncle, the latter of whom has dedicated his life to yacht design and is regarded as one of the leading yacht designers in China. In the early years, we focused on building 40 to 58-foot trawler boats, with our primary market centred on Europe, where we have successfully sold between 50 and 70 vessels.In my view, Europe remains the benchmark for yacht design and innovation, setting trends and standards across the industry. Inspired by this, we aimed to introduce a similar level of quality and style to our domestic market. In 2011, following comprehensive market research, we shifted our strategy to focus on larger yachts and began catering predominantly to Chinese clients.&nbsp;This led to the introduction of the Flybridge Series, which includes models measuring up to 30-metres. Over the past 13 years, we have seen consistent growth in this segment. Most recently, we launched the 29.9-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/15286" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feng Er29.9m (98'1&quot;)Allegro Yacht2025">Feng Er</a>, which represents the latest evolution of our design and craftsmanship.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358163/image/large-df372246bf3b9d2519ee4975b0e8b174.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358163">What is your current production capacity and how has this changed in recent years?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegro Yacht (Company)">Allegro Yacht</a> benefits from extensive production facilities, having relocated last year to a larger site, which provides greater capacity to build multiple yachts simultaneously, while maintaining greater control over construction costs.&nbsp;Yachts currently in production include a 35.4-metre yacht, scheduled for delivery in 2026 with interiors by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4774" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pulina Exclusive Interiors (Company)">Pulina</a>, a 25-metre yacht, a 22.9-metre yacht, and two 19.8-metre models, with plans underway to commence construction on an 18.9-metre catamaran as well.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358522/image/large-1158dda343ebb688a6e5eecfa307282d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358522"> Have you noticed any shifts in buyer preferences within the Chinese domestic market?In China, yachts are predominantly used as entertainment spaces rather than for overnight stays. Clients typically prefer to use their yachts as social venues - hosting parties, entertaining friends, or conducting business meetings onboard. As a result, there is less emphasis on overnight accommodation and more focus on creating spacious, sociable interiors.Among the younger generation, particularly those in their twenties and thirties from wealthy backgrounds, there has been a noticeable rise in enthusiasm for sailing and spending time at sea. Many are seeking a more hands-on approach to yacht ownership, commissioning yachts they have personally helped design, without a long-established background in superyacht construction and by working closely with the shipyards. Their aim is often to create a unique, bespoke yacht that is not available on the wider market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358527/image/large-758038c171361f5b6952c289416cd995.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358527">By contrast, only a small proportion of around one and five percent of the older generation purchase yachts purely out of a passion for life on the water, with the majority viewing yacht ownership primarily as a business or entertainment asset.In response to this shift in usage, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegro Yacht (Company)">Allegro Yacht</a> adapted its designs by converting traditional staterooms into karaoke rooms and placing greater emphasis on creating social spaces onboard. Clients increasingly seek a high level of customisation, with each yacht featuring a unique interior conceived to reflect the owner’s personal style. This bespoke nature of the work can present challenges, particularly in aligning designs with varying tastes, but remains a central focus of the company’s offering.&nbsp;Looking ahead, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegro Yacht (Company)">Allegro Yacht</a> plans to expand into the growing charter market across the wider Asia region. Partnering with established local operators is expected to be a key strategic move, enabling the company's yachts to generate additional revenue, strengthen brand presence and support a faster return on investment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358528/image/large-39d2534cbe3f58b98e730c7ef8bbde1d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358528">Given the current geopolitical and economic climate, what challenges do you see for Chinese yacht builders in the global superyacht industry?In my view, I remain optimistic about the future. While tariffs have had a notable impact, Chinese shipyards have demonstrated the ability to adapt by restructuring their supply chains, which remains a major strength within the industry. The yards most affected are those operating as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), specialising solely in building yachts for the international market. Each market has its own specific characteristics; for example, in Thailand, the charter sector is extremely active, supported by the abundance of cruising locations. This presents an opportunity to introduce our yachts to the Asian charter market, which offers significant potential for growth.In regions such as the Middle East, however, the market dynamics differ. Buyers there, often from royal families or high-net-worth individuals, tend to favour established European brands. As a result, entering markets where clients have strong preferences for European-built yachts presents additional challenges for Chinese builders.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/358536/image/large-afb96a668f8fa165971e6abbc50df3a1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/358536">Looking ahead, how is Allegro Yacht presenting itself in terms of expansion and innovation within the superyacht market?We are planning to expand our presence internationally, with Hong Kong identified as a key market. Much like Dubai in the Middle East, Hong Kong serves as an important hub where international clients gather, offering an excellent opportunity to showcase our products to a broader audience.In terms of technological innovation, we have been in discussions with Huawei to explore advancements in onboard technology.
