Her most recent transformation however, began in 2022, upon her acquisition by new owners, Mr and Mrs Kourtesis. Under the guidance of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/300" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Apostolos Molindris & Associates (Company)">Apostolos Molindris</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4171" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Xiphias33.2m (108'11&quot;)Chantier de L'Estérel1974">Xiphias</a> was gutted and rebuilt with completely new interiors, while her original engines were refurbished.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/348777/image/large-1fbf35146c392175691975a57de64d86.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/348777">In April 2024, her most recent and significant refit was completed in Perama, Greece. Restoring a legacy: Mr Kourtesis on his 33m yacht Xiphias

Upon being acquired by an enthusiastic owner following a severe fire in 2016, the classic 71.05-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> motor yacht, formerly, The One and Carinthia VI, has now been renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/674" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="V2V71.05m (233'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1973">V2V</a> and has been rebuilt to exhibit her original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> lines, paying homage to her history and classical design. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262005/image/large-b479c33a41dbe5498bfc12ac23aab48d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262005"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/674" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="V2V71.05m (233'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1973">V2V</a> was first launched in 1973 as Carinthia VI&nbsp;for the experienced owner duo and late &nbsp;German entrepreneur Helmut Horten and, in later years, his wife, Heidi. The details of the first two of the Carinthias fleet are obscure, though widely assumed to have consisted of smaller vessels for use on the &nbsp;Ruhr and Rhine rivers.&nbsp;Carinthia III, on the other hand, was Horten’s first real superyacht. Measuring 24.60 metres she was built by the French shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/548" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chantier de L'Estérel (Company)">Chantiers Navals de l’Esterel&nbsp;</a>in 1961. She was designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/549" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="André Mauric (Company)">André Mauric</a>, and was later sold and renamed twice; Brionie and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7635" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Venezuela 24.6m (80'9&quot;)Chantier de L'Estérel1961">Venezuela</a>. One thing all the Carinthia’s have in common is that they are all notably fast yachts and though Carinthia III&nbsp;was one of the slowest in the fleet, she still boasted a top speed of 23 knots. She was last reported to be in Greece in 2006.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158208/image/large-77b059274290fe2e7df6bc0ea1be05cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158208">Carinthia IV&nbsp;(pictured above) saw Horten upgrade in size by almost 18 metres to 42 metres, to a yacht that was also the fastest Carinthia with a top speed of 34 knots. Built by the same French shipyard as Carinthia III, she was completed in 1964, with Horten again assigning her design to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/549" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="André Mauric (Company)">Mauric</a>, this time in collaboration with the now-iconic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Jon Bannenberg</a>. Again, &nbsp;number four in the series of yachts was sold and renamed, this time to Sylvana C. Seeing another extension in length from her predecessor, this vessel was built at the German shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, a brand a little closer to home for Horten. Measuring 67.85 metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> was responsible for her design this time in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, marking a departure from the French shipyard Horten had previously favoured for his Carinthias. Again built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen&nbsp;</a>to an almost identical design of Carinthia V, Carinthia VI&nbsp;measured 70.68 metres, and was one of the largest yachts in the world at the time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20602/image/large-2c2fb29561e15adb5225ba41d35f90b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20602">She was later sold and renamed The One and she cruised under that name for another 13 years. Regrettably, on 4 January 2016, she was destroyed in a fire that broke out in the marina where she was moored in Marmaris in Turkey. The 33m Chantier de L’Estérel motor yacht Xiphias sold in an in-house deal with IYC. She had a last known asking price of €600,000.

As part of our history series from revered in-house yacht historian, Malcolm Wood, SYT takes a closer look at yacht builders that are, for one reason or another, no longer in existence. This issue we explore the French builder Chantiers Navals de l’Esterel situated to the west of Cannes in the La Bocca area on the road to La Napoule.The yard was in existence in the 1930s and the company was officially established following WWII for the repair of wooden yachts damaged in the conflict. Their expertise in working with this material would result in numerous orders for wooden motor yachts from the 1960s until the late 1980s.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/31595/image/large-03b81ffcb13802959d4231b5ae2ea8b7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31595">Tianca IIAlthough Esterel was known for its production of fast motor yachts the first yacht they built over 18 metres was Naagh, a Bermudan-rigged cutter of 20.4 metres designed by Andre Mauric. This yacht was delivered to her French owner Rene Combastet in 1951.Bernina, the first motor yacht, was completed for her Belgian owner in 1954. It measured 19 metres and featured a mahogany hull with oak frames. All yachts built by the yard used mahogany as the hull material except for one, delivered near the cessation of yacht building that was built of aluminium.Their first yacht over 24-metres was La Bouffonne, delivered in 1959, and the first over 30 metres was the Carinthia IV of 1964, measuring an impressive 42 metres. This latter yacht was fitted with twin 18 cyl. Napier Deltic engines developing a total of 6,200 hp (4,562 kW) providing a maximum speed of 34 knots. Quite outstanding for a yacht of this size in the 1960s. Sadly this yacht sank following a fire in 1981 when named Sylvana C.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/31593/image/large-373e5d84fc3d845bcec2b7fa28d6f599.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31593">Carinthia IVMost Esterel yachts were designed by Andre Mauric with several having Jon Bannenberg penned exteriors and interiors. Nine yachts were delivered in the 1960s including the aforementioned Carinthia IV and the 32.5-metre Silvercross, a three-deck motor yacht fitted with twin Mercedes diesels of 1350hp and capable of 27 knots. Silvercross was damaged by fire at San Remo in the early 1980s and was then purchased by Greek owners.The 1970s saw another five yachts completed including three of 26 metres, the 31.9-metre Xiphias and the 33.1-metre Arjuna. One of the 26 metres, the La Feline, went to Canada and is currently for sale.The Jon Bannenberg designed 42-metre Acajou with her varnished mahogany hull was delivered in 1983 and was hailed as one of the most beautiful yachts of its time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/31596/image/large-cacbc826d4f8dc1bba4dc6d4624af386.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31596">AcajouAcajou was badly damaged in the storm at Piraeus when the harbour wall collapsed. She has been rebuilt as Sureyya now but without the varnished hull.The last three yachts delivered in the mid-1980s had exterior lines by Paolo Caliari with naval architecture by Andre Mauric. They were all over 30 metres, two had mahogany hulls but the last yacht completed, Esterel of Cannes, had an aluminium hull and superstructure.&nbsp;In 1987 the Esterel yard transferred its operations to the Ile Ste. Marguerite off Cannes to switch focus on the maintenance and repair of wooden yachts.In addition to building yachts, the company also built a large number of naval patrol boats for Tunisia, Algeria, and other former French colonies.One notable conversion was the 33-metre Esterel built naval patrol boat A.E.C. Ancelle that was rebuilt in 2003 by the WS yard in Savona and became the motor yacht Tempest WS.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/31598/image/large-0b0a498e4f6c24cd49cba74cd15f68ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31598">Tempest WSIn the meantime, Esterel was busy rebuilding the 30.5-metre wooden Greek-built Arvi into the charter yacht Clara One in 2003 for operation in the Western Mediterranean.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/31592/image/large-3215d4b7762acbc5cbaffe4f6ad6228f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/31592">Intrigue Although Esterel no longer builds yachts from scratch, they built up a reputation for quality. That reputation attracted such clients as Helmut Horten, Harold Robbins (the novelist), the Ojjeh family, Jacky Setton and the Greek shipowning families of Goulandris and Embiricos. A shame indeed that this yard is no longer operational, there is some solace in the fact that most of the Esterel-built motor yachts are still sailing and giving sterling service today. The ghost of yards past: Chantiers Navals de l’Esterel

One of the most iconic superyachts ever launched is the 97.20 metre superyacht Carinthia VII. With her smart navy blue hull and gleaming white superstructure she is instantly recognisable, though what most don’t know is that she is actually part of a much bigger story.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158206/image/large-e0e4ec4f9758e4dc2bb28919aa4486a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158206" class="legacy">The story of the Carinthia yachts began more than 50 years ago. They have been cruising the oceans of the world since the early 1960s and although two of the seven yachts met an unfortunate watery grave over the years, at least three of these vessels are still going strong today. Commissioned by the late German entrepreneur Helmut Horten and, in later years, his wife, Heidi, here yacht historian Malcolm Wood tells the story of the Carinthia’s.Helmut Horten made his fortune after introducing the supermarket concept to his home country following a business trip to the United States. It was an action that quickly made him into one of the most affluent men in Germany, and by the late 1960s, his Group boasted a €1 billion turnover. This accumulation of wealth of course opened many doors for Horten, including the opportunity to freely invest in his love for yachting.The details of the first two of the Carinthias fleet are obscure, though widely assumed to have consisted of smaller vessels for use on the Ruhr and Rhine rivers. Carinthia III, on the other hand, was Horten’s first real superyacht. Measuring 24.60 metres she was built by the French shipyard Chantiers Navals de l’Esterel in 1961. She was designed by André Mauric, and was later sold and renamed twice; Brionie and Venezuela. One thing all the Carinthia’s have in common is that they are all notably fast yachts and though Carinthia III was one of the slowest in the fleet, she still boasted a top speed of 23 knots. She was last reported to be in Greece in 2006.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158207/image/large-9ffe69aa09a71028150ea24c0a220c89.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158207" class="legacy">Carinthia IV&nbsp;saw Horten upgrade in size by almost 18 metres to 42 metres, to a yacht that was also the fastest Carinthia with a top speed of 34 knots. Built by the same French shipyard as Carinthia III, she was completed in 1964, with Horten again assigning her design to Mauric, this time in collaboration with the now-iconic Jon Bannenberg. Again, number four in the series of yachts was sold and renamed, this time to Sylvana C. She was outlived by her original owner after being consumed by fire in Greece in 1981.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158208/image/large-8b1e7a14d9d42dc67574ba1f6894cc45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158208" class="legacy">Tragedy too taints the fate of Carinthia V. Seeing another extension in length from her predecessor, this vessel was built at the German shipyard Lürssen, a brand a little closer to home for Horten. Measuring 67.85 metres, Bannenberg was responsible for her design this time in collaboration with Lürssen, marking a departure from the French shipyard Horten had previously favoured for his Carinthias. Still a fast yacht for her size at 27 knots, she met her end after striking an uncharted rock near Corfu in 1971, the same year she was completed.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158209/image/large-7d5c4a201bf3756645d4e07d8b8524dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158209" class="legacy">Horten didn’t grieve over the loss for too long, however, and promptly ordered a replacement that was delivered just two years later in 1973. Again built by Lürssen to an almost identical design of Carinthia V, Carinthia VI&nbsp;measured 70.68 metres, and was one of the largest yachts in the world at the time. She was later sold and renamed The One. Since publication, tragidy struck The One recently when the yacht caught fire in Marmaris, Turkey. Helmut and Heidi Horten: a fleet of Carinthias

The 34.55m yacht is designed by French designer André Mauric, who also designed <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/651">Tempest WS</a> &amp; <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1217">Alcyone</a>. Before she was named Shaha, she was well known under the name Jack &amp; Jill. These days Shaha can often be found in Valletta, Malta and during the summer she cruises in the Mediterranean.
