The show is one of the leading exhibitions dedicated to the boating industry in the area and will feature over 220 exhibitors and 300 vessels. They want a level of freedom that they were no longer getting in their home towns with rolling lockdown measures. Yachting offered this.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208213/image/large-1afe5578fb09a7a6df7bf2e733fc1f96.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208213"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Bernardo Zuccon</a> echoed this: “Certainly, the pandemic has affected daily life for all of us. It is possible, therefore, that covid has inspired potential owners to invest in boats, because they represent safe, micro-ecosystems, isolated from the rest of the world, ideal for spending the holidays in serenity or simply getting away with their families.” &nbsp;The last years have influenced our overarching values which, in turn, spurred on new demands. “People are looking for a more intimate, safe, and low-risk environment thus making yachting a fantastic solution,” Francesco Ansalone or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arcadia Yachts (Company)">Arcadia Yachts</a>, added. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">“In terms of design, people want to stay on board for longer periods of time. They want more privacy, more separation from the staff, and areas such as the gym, and closet spaces are becoming more important. We are also adding elements like medical centres on board for some of our projects,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a> continued. “Multiple onboard areas are also in high demand.”“This preference for multifunctional environments on the yacht that can be used in many different ways throughout the day, according to needs, is a key trend-driver. It is now a common trait we are seeing in all new projects, ” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valerio Rivellini Yacht Design (Company)">Valerio Rivellini</a> noted.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/40907/image/large-7983e5a8d15d0ce2e8330351adea061f.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/40907"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon</a> added, “we are not witnessing a structural overhaul, but rather a change in the prevailing conception of yachting, which has shifted from a party venue and an instrument of ostentation to a place of refuge.”These conversations are prominent at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> as well, “each space needs to be carefully designed and built with meticulous attention to detail. We are anticipating trends by redesigning the spaces onboard, even in the smallest model, we aim to create separate areas that provide as much privacy as possible,” Stefano de Vivo saidThe very idea of what yachting is has been gradually changing – a gentle cascade. The pandemic exacerbated this and acted as an accelerator; it has brought forth the changes of tomorrow to the present day. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216395/image/large-af405c2b54a7ef62ffd8a996270d1642.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216395">Hans-Maarten Bais of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> had more to say on this point: “Yes, the way people use their yachts has changed, but whether that's related to the pandemic, I'm not sure. People are not only interested in spending their summer in the Mediterranean anymore, they want to explore remote destinations like the Arctic and the Baltic states.Explorer-type vessels are in vogue at the moment – people want an experience,” Bais continued. “They want to be in contact with the weather, with the sea. But they also want safe deck spaces for children to play and to store the wide range of toys on the market.”Nonetheless, yacht life has always pivoted on the deck areas. “You spend all your time outside, weather permitting,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> said, “and people are finally acknowledging this trend and removing the barriers between the interior and exterior spaces.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/113132/image/large-ecb1aca452ab298e14aa589936b01054.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113132"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>’s clients are not the only ones either; &nbsp;“the most prominent and recurring demand, in my experience, has been the need for a spacious yacht with interior and exterior spaces flowing together, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood</a> said.“Many clients have experienced divisions in previous yachts, which have highlighted the lack of flow between the interior and exterior and they wish to overcome this negative aspect. This, coupled with a timeless and original design that provides style and function, in equal measures, is the most common request,” &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Heywood</a> continued. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216692/image/large-e77d1c2601043f5966721604b1262bd2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216692"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> expects “that later down the line we'll go even further and basically skip the whole big central area. These common spaces will slowly disappear. Yachts will start taking on the characteristics of a large house in the far East or the Caribbean, where the only internal parts that are fully enclosed are the bedrooms and perhaps the kitchen, or at least part of the kitchen. All the rest of the spaces are actually outside with only a covered roof.”The question of actualising design is a hot topic and there is a great dilemma at the moment for owners deciding which route to take: new-build or refit? On top of this though, “the consumer base has also expanded, owners are attracted by the possibilities and safety that a holiday at sea can offer, which in my opinion, has had a major impact on the second-hand sector,” Rivellini said. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/3103/image/large-3133bf450a2310e0ad55e44caffb2079.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/3103">A major problem though is that “there is a shortage of second-hand yachts. So there is a limit to what’s on offer, and what’s left has either been on the market for a while now or is very, very expensive. So people are looking more into possibilities for refits. I think that has more to do with the markets than with the pandemic, though,” Bais speculated.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a> confirmed this sentiment; “There are a lot of older boats, say 10-15 years old, that are being sold and which need refitting – this is still a desirable and convenient option for many in terms of price, and also have in the time of turn around. So even people in a position to buy new are looking at refitting because it's faster.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206366/image/large-e2d9a4df2ff9be0619930848adc2f55f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206366"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/16338/image/large-120d929e0d2932a660b62e729ce47168.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16338">“Another interesting trend is represented by the choice of the purchase of a ‘bigger’ second-hand yacht instead of an ‘appropriate’ size of a brand new yacht,” Ansalone added.Stefano de Vivo dismissed this though, “the ongoing pandemic never totally stopped us. We introduced the right precautions to allow the safety of our shipyards and workers, and we always worked hard to guarantee on-time deliveries. Let’s think of the first 2020 lockdown, as we managed to deliver some yachts overseas, in order to make our customers happy even in a very difficult moment.”The long and short of it for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> is that “yacht builders need to adapt quickly to clients’ demands and the speed at which they change and grow in number, in order to remain competitive on the market by offering increasingly cutting-edge products and technical solutions that keep pace with evolving technology,” de Vivo said. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/170889/image/large-ad62b45ff4fcaff3c8777b9dcaceec0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/170889">This dynamism of the industry seemed to be a recurring theme throughout these discussions. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Heywood</a> encapsulates this well: “Change is always in the mind of the designer, every new line on the paper will produce a challenge to the client and the builder, but it must always be an improvement and refinement to the design, ‘change for change's sake’ is a false god and an unproductive venture that will haunt and devalue the design.”It seems as though the pandemic has spurred on conversations and accelerated a changing attitude towards the very idea of what yachting is. Design changes are gurgling and slowly surfacing, but we shouldn’t expect great overhauls, we should expect small, nuanced and impactful design flourishes.

The creative culmination of the two design studios is a twin-decked 23.8-metre motor yacht with an interior volume of 95 GT. The shipbuilder has noticed a change in demographic from its clients, as owners are said to have a more “diverse background” and are driven by the “process of brand internationalisation”. These nine yachts scheduled for this year will be operated in the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands and the United Arab Emirates.
