(Company)">WOSA Yacht Refit &amp; Survey</a> in February.Founded in 2010 by Filippo Calcaterra, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> is an independent specialist in yacht refit and marine surveying, operating year-round across key European hubs. The company’s holding entity is based near London, where a dedicated team develops proprietary survey software used in-house and rented to other shipyards. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>’s main refit office is in Viareggio, while the survey division is centred in Monaco. There is another branch in Spain, set up by Calcaterra when he relocated there.SuperYacht Times Features Writer Enrico Chhibber interviewed Stefano de Vivo to explore his journey to joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>, the state of the refit market and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>’s strategy and future developments.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/365660/image/large-0927b775aa926dc1ba4025d989853d3f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/365660">De Vivo’s move to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>For de Vivo, the decision to join <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> was rooted in his long-standing interest in refit and service strategies. During his years at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>, “I had always designed a strategy in refits and services,” he said, adding that while the group had successfully started expanding services in America, de Vivo felt there was significant room for growth in Europe as well.Reflecting on his experience, de Vivo noted that building a successful refit business within a shipyard is not as straightforward as it might seem. The processes “are very similar but have very different dynamics. From the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to the way you manage clients and production, it’s completely different to manage new-builds compared with refits.”After nearly eleven years at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a>, de Vivo felt it was the right moment for change. “My time had come to change. I wanted to stay a bit more with the family and needed a new stimulus,” he stated. Through de Vivo’s multi-family office, which invests in ventures ranging from real estate to specialised businesses, an opportunity to invest in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> emerged. “I had the expertise, I know people in the industry and I knew Filippo because we worked together at Benetti sixteen years ago.”After reconnecting with Filippo Calcaterra, the next steps became clear. “Filippo was looking for someone to help bring the company to the next level and for financial backing. ”De Vivo had both. We had the financial backing, I really liked the industry and he is very knowledgeable, so we decided to invest and work together.”De Vivo’s family office now holds a 50 percent stake in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>, giving the company flexibility to combine its balance sheet strength with additional investment when the right opportunities arise. “This means we can think about growing where we need it most, like having infrastructure such as shipyards, to keep developing our refit business,” he said.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/365659/image/large-0a428f097bb64d6beaf9f2978f4e0c0a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/365659"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>’s current strategy and focusToday, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> is gradually expanding its in-house refit capacity in Viareggio, Italy, to strengthen its core operations. “We have a shipyard in the inland industrial area of about 3,000 square-metres, and we’ve just rented another one of about 1,500 square-metres attached to it,” de Vivo explained. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> has also secured a long-term concession for a plot in Via Coppino. “We’ve received the go-ahead from the authorities in Italy to start demolishing the old building and build a shipyard of about 1,000 square metres so we can work on yachts up to 42-metres.”While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> is expanding its ability to carry out refit projects in-house, de Vivo acknowledged that refits of larger yachts require bigger facilities with direct access to the water. “For bigger yachts, we use larger shipyards, especially <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5323" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arpeca Shipyard (Company)">Arpeca</a> in Viareggio and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a> in Livorno and shipyards in the south of France,” he said. “This year we worked on over 30 refit projects including an 80-metre, a 77-metre and a 73-metre at other yards. The goal is to secure long-term leases or acquire plots of land close to the sea so that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> can handle more large projects on its own.”He noted that apart from its current sites in Viareggio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> still depends on its network of trusted partners for larger projects. “We have to use other shipyards, which is fine because we have some of the best players in the industry at our doorstep. But if you want to keep growing, you cannot rely on others all the time. It would be good to have a balance between using others and doing it on our premises.”State of the refit marketLooking at the wider refit market, de Vivo believes that yacht refit has evolved considerably over the past few decades and is poised for further growth. “Refit has for many years already involved large-scale projects. You go from normal maintenance or five-year class renewals all the way up to completely rebuilding boats from the 1920s,” he remarked. “But I think it’s increasing because we’ve been producing a lot of yachts over 30 or 40-metres in the last 25 to 30 years, and now many of these are being bought second-hand and refitted rather than commissioning new-builds.”De Vivo elaborated: “Many people prefer to buy a second-hand yacht and spend the money to make it theirs, just like with houses. Not everyone buys new. You buy an existing house and change the look and feel to make it yours.”&nbsp;Sustainability is another area where de Vivo sees refit playing a key role. “Green solutions will be implemented more and more on existing yachts. It can be small things like better insulation to reduce energy needs, all the way through to bigger steps.” He is prepared for everything; “one day there will be alternative kinds of propulsion that can be retrofitted on yachts and superyachts built in the last 20 years.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/365657/image/large-5edd2422b38fcbd57f6719aec50b079a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/365657">Future developmentsAside from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a>’s focus on expanding its physical facilities for in-house refit projects, de Vivo explained that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. (Company)">WOSA</a> also has several ongoing projects on the survey side. “We work with the biggest players on the client side, the owner side and the shipyard side to help develop and improve quality levels, finishing standards and procedures.” But de Vivo remains secretive when it comes to the survey side, “right now we cannot share full details. We have some developments that are already ongoing, but we cannot disclose exactly what they involve.”In addition, De Vivo has expansion plans that reach beyond Europe. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wosa ltd. It is with great sadness that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Overmarine Group SPA (Company)">Overmarine Group</a> has announced the passing of its esteemed founder and President Giuseppe Balducci today (10 June 2024). <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314533/image/large-ab34417df6b842bfbfdbb909edc4131e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314533">Born in Limite sull'Arno in 1937, Giuseppe Balducci embarked on his yachting career from &nbsp;a remarkably young age. Relocating to Viareggio during his childhood, Giuseppe began working as an electrician at the historic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Picchiotti (Company)">Picchiotti</a> shipyard in 1953 at just 16 years old. He remained with the Viareggio-based shipyard until its bankruptcy in 1971.During the same year, Giuseppe founded his own company Elettromare, a brand that continues to manufacture marine electrical systems to this day. Even then, Elettromare was a trailblazer in creating advanced electrical panels and systems for boats.During his business ventures Giuseppe Balducci extensively toured Italy and the United States, which provided him with insights into the evolving boat-building industry, particularly the shift from wood to fibreglass. This inspired him to open a factory in Massarosa (Lucca), dedicated to constructing fibreglass yachts. The first open-maxi model, the Mangusta 80, is a testament to Giuseppe's innovative spirit, with as many as 85 units sold in the following years.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Overmarine Group SPA (Company)">Overmarine Group</a>, as it stands today, is a testament to Giuseppe Balducci's unwavering enthusiasm and belief in his dream.
