She began life in 1978 as the 166-foot Seattle-based crabber Fierce Contender. “In 2007, she was purchased with the idea of converting her into a support yacht,” shared Captain Tony. “The goal was to carry helicopters, smaller boats, and toys – everything from jet skis and e-foils to kitesurfing gear, kayaks, paddleboards, and ski boats.”Under the vision of Stan Antrim and designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/868" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Joseph Artese Design (Company)">Joseph Artese</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuRi63.4m (208'0&quot;)Halter Marine1978">SuRi</a>’s original pilothouse was preserved, while the freeboard was raised and large windows were added. Bay Ship &amp; Yacht Co., a US based refit and new construction yard for superyachts and commercial vessels, recently expanded its capacity and capabilities by unveiling a new covered dry dock that accommodates vessels displacing up to 6,300-long tons with a maximum beam of 76 feet.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/145253/image/large-7716cecab7f5e875124d7ab30e69a3bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/145253">Currently the only dry dock on the West Coast to be fully enclosed by a retractable roof, this new high-tech facility on San Francisco Bay is a conversion of the submersible Hughes Mining Barge (HMB-1), which played a role in a covert Cold War operation.According to CIA documents declassified in 2012, the HMB-1 was built in the 1970s by the U.S. Navy as part of Project Azorian, a top-secret plan to salvage the Soviet submarine K- 129, which sank while reportedly carrying three nuclear-armed ballistic missiles, from the floor of the Pacific Ocean. The ruggedly built HMB-1 was designed to submerge to 160 feet and sit on the seabed during the transfer of heavy equipment required to retrieve the sub. After Project Azorian’s successful conclusion, the HMB-1 was transferred to Lockheed Martin, where it became a floating dry dock for the Navy’s experimental 164-foot SWATH vessel Sea Shadow, a test bed for stealth technology.Today, the new HMB-1 dry dock, which has a 69-foot-high retractable roof, offers Bay Ship &amp; Yacht clients a covered environment for commercial ship and superyacht service, repair and refit projects.The HMB-1 facility has expanded Bay Ship &amp; Yacht’s dry dock capacity by 18 feet in width, while its lifting capability has more than doubled. One of her new feature are her 'Windows to the Sea.' Located in the new space on the hold deck, these windows to the sea are a superyacht first. (BSY) located in Alameda, California in collaboration with naval architects Kirilloff and Associates of Green Cove springs, Florida, and Jeffrey Botwin of Herringbone Design of Los Angeles, California have been awarded the contract to lengthen the expedition yacht SuRi by adding a 11 metre mid-body hull and superstructure plug for a new overall length of 63.4 metre. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136978/image/large-3ac79120625197befe20582068cb1e1e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136978">The Sun Deck will be extended aft 24 feet to allow for the owner’s new alfresco dining area plus a complete main engine and generator renewal package. In the hull of the extension area, a new underwater viewing room will be added that will allow guests to view the ocean from the comfort of SuRi’s elegant interior. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136979/image/large-66ede5bca60b8a27e547cb79417f6fa8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136979">BSY won the contract for this work by competing internationally against New Zealand and Australian shipyards. Since the 2008 financial crash, American super yacht refit yards have suffered severely, with far fewer projects planned, and those that did materialize mostly going to Europe. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/136980/image/large-62c5af92ac41aea1a4b93b27ccf43345.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136980">BSY’s competitive spirit and its ability to perform this type of work with its skilled tradesmen and local vendor support helped win this contract. The SuRi refit will be accomplished using 99% American made products and Subcontractors, thus generating many jobs in the local economy, and is noted to be the largest yacht refit and modification project done in the United States in many years. All work will be overseen by the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and San Francisco, California offices of Bureau Veritas, the yacht’s classification society. The SuRi is an American built hull that was converted in Seattle in 2007/2008 and is owned by an American (California) yachtsman.
