Built from aluminium, the BC80’s notably shallow 1.5-metre draft allows the vessel to access low anchorage points, such as coastlines.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327511/image/large-f85a9f2141ba23291afb6cce286b78a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327511"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327509/image/large-532d1fe3e90d26ecdd4a3ac5c3131a08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327509">The BC80 offers several customisable configurations, including a ‘flybridge version,’ wherein 82-square-metres are allotted to outdoor living space. This version also boasts solar panels capable of generating 20 kilowatts (kW) of energy in optimal weather conditions.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327510/image/large-f71012d2de5be5213a1ae5c9058a344d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327510">Moreover, the BC80’s solar panel layout places even more focus on sustainability, featuring an extensive solar panel array paired with a high-capacity lithium-ion battery bank and a “kick-saving” system, which work to minimise generator dependence. This system is designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering Yachts</a> to allow for 24 hours of silent cruising, without running the yacht’s generator. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327508/image/large-7bd532fe9b90407b3cf05c716d147d49.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327508">Accommodations onboard the BC80 are also flexible, as clients can opt for layouts with either four, five, or six guest staterooms. The catamaran’s standard layout positions a galley forward on the main deck, and the guest suites in the sponsons or ‘hull extensions,’ to increase privacy and reduce noise. With a 23.85-metre load line length and 26.2-metre overall length, the motor yacht features a spacious four-deck arrangement. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327597/image/large-74d297c0c2520aa604219819d360deb4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327597">The second hull features a full interior and exterior design from her builder and her interiors are modern with light colours and a focus on natural materials such as marble and wood. This relaxing and spacious design truly represents the owner’s request for a boat that would serve as a great location to host, accommodate, and entertain visitors with great hospitality and comfort.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327595/image/large-f35062494fd8f2fd8ddb5f8f03c2be4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327595">She can accommodate as many as 10 guests between five staterooms, in addition to five crew in two cabins. The main deck features a master stateroom with a walk-in wardrobe, a main galley, a comfortable saloon, and a cockpit with a table for 10 guests. The hull of the first 39.52-metre Bering 125 motor yacht has been moved to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering</a> outfitting facility in Antalya from its Istanbul facility. Over the past decade, Turkey has emerged as an increasingly attractive location for 30-metres plus superyacht refits among owners worldwide. This surge in popularity can be attributed to a number of things, such as the cost-effectiveness of its refit works, facilitated by historically lower labour costs and favourable foreign currency exchange rates.Furthermore, the appeal of Turkey is heightened by the saturation of many European refit yards each season, coupled with ongoing developments in Turkey’s marina infrastructure and the growing allure of its coastline as a travel destination.According to <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>, there was a significant upswing in the number of 30-metres-plus yachts undergoing refits from 2017 to 2021, from 18 superyachts undergoing refits in 2017 to an impressive 78 in 2021.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309766/image/large-3e0c00de0f58ad553ced3fd724d25575.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309766">Burak Nergiz from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2580" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KRM Yacht Refit & Repair (Company)">KRM</a> explained that the significant transformation observed in the Turkish refit sector over the past decade can be attributed to the development of refit infrastructure and a strategic shift in refit approach, enabling an increased capacity for yachts. Nergiz notes that “before 2010, many refit yards were part of shipyard manufacturers, and there was no dedicated company solely focused on refits until the establishment of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2580" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KRM Yacht Refit & Repair (Company)">KRM</a>.” Moreover, in 2018, as evidence of the growing demand for refits, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2580" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KRM Yacht Refit & Repair (Company)">KRM</a> expanded its capabilities by acquiring a 300-ton travel lift, thereby enhancing the capacity for refitting yachts up to 45-metres in size.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/290001/image/large-4b7e41140270bcdfb299e428802d1bd3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/290001">Despite the growth up to 2021, the years 2022 and 2023, witnessed a reduction in refit activities within the Turkish superyacht market. Nevertheless, Turkey appears to have retained its substantial global market presence, constituting approximately 5% of the total number of vessels undergoing refit operations compared to 13% in France and 14% in Spain.The decrease in the number of yachts frequenting Turkey for refit can be attributed to a combination of reasons. These range from the deterioration of financial conditions in Turkey to a considerable increase in the number of superyachts undergoing refits in previous years, along with a rise in new-build projects that has resulted in a lack of space for new refit projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289999/image/large-49c974f4ef421f68ce3035431b7181d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289999">According to the Associated Press, the Turkish economy is grappling with a currency crisis and soaring inflation, significantly affecting labour wages and the prices of raw materials. Ersun Sengun founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7431" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mono Yachting (Company)">Mono Yachting</a>, a full yacht services agency based in Bodrum, has undertaken numerous projects over the years and is currently working on the refit of the 49-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2339" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MMM49.0m (160'9&quot;)Amels1993">MMM</a>. He confirms the economic impact on the yacht sector, affirming: “due to inflation, the minimum salary for workers has increased unbelievably from 2,500 to 11,500 Lira in three years, and now we are expecting to see it rise to approximately 17,500 Lira this year, representing a substantial 600% increase from the initial 2,500 Lira.” This is noteworthy, as the cost of refitting a yacht 30-metres plus in Turkey has now become comparable to that in France, Italy, and Spain. Ersun highlights this shift by recounting a conversation with a superyacht captain who informed him, “the cost of the refit is now almost the same as Palma.” But despite the increase in price, the “captain was still adamant about carrying out the refit in Turkey due to our craftsmanship and attention to detail”. Ersun further emphasised that in Palma, “where many yachts are stacked on top of each other, there is a lack of focus and attention to detail, unlike the work carried out in Turkey.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289998/image/large-ee8dc32e950f13db1d1bf4a5f7ee566f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289998">Regarding the impact of inflation on the sector, Bogdan Gusarev, Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering Yachts</a>, notes, "Turkey has a different approach to inflation compared to people in Europe. While sudden inflation spikes of 10 percent may cause panic elsewhere, Turkey, being more accustomed to inflation has adapted to this economic reality and found effective coping mechanisms. This isn't a new challenge for them, having dealt with ongoing issues even before the impact of Covid. Consequently, this trend is likely to persist. I believe Europe is currently grappling with more severe challenges in terms of pricing and a shortage of skilled labour.”Aside from the economic impact on the Turkish refit market, another factor contributing to the decline in the number of refit projects is the upsurge in new-build yachts, leading to a shortage of available space for refit endeavours. Berkay Yilmaz, Commercial Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin Yachts</a> commented: “While we acknowledge the growing demand for new-builds, it's important to highlight that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin Yachts</a> is currently dedicated to the maintenance and refit of our existing projects, which encompasses both new builds and refit assignments. At present, we are unable to accept external refit projects”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289997/image/large-ce2eb361eb72d5bfe3360e04f2dec97c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289997">Moreover, Aleksandra Podlipna, Megayacht Technical Manager of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5160" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="West Istanbul Marina (Company)">West Istanbul Marina</a>, who is working on the refit project of a 67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, further confirms this stating that: “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> expanded the size of their vessels. Previously, they constructed yachts ranging from 35 to 50 metres, but now they are working on yachts as large as 80-metres. As a result, their facilities are occupied with new building projects. Moreover, this trend is also evident with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a>, as they have also increased the size of their in-build yachts. This heightened demand has created constraints on both manpower and facility space for other refit projects”.An analysis of <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>'s data on the number of new yacht sales further substantiates Ersun’s and Podlipna’s observations, revealing a notable increase in new-build projects within the region. In 2023 there were 21 new yacht sales and 30 in 2022, a substantial rise from 16 in 2020.Furthermore, Bogdan provided insight, stating, ”I can confirm that major projects are currently underway in Turkey, not merely in the conceptual phase but in the construction stage. These projects surpass the 30-metre range. Specifically, I'm monitoring numerous developments within the Antalya Free Zone, where multiple projects of 40-metres plus are actively under construction.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289995/image/large-f81ff82958c786d1d9aff2945420fd38.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289995">Oguz Bilgin, sales manager at TransDiesel, a company that distributes John Deere Power Systems in Turkey, highlighted an interesting development, where many commercial shipyards are transitioning into the superyacht sector, particularly in the refit aspect. He highlighted that Tersan Shipyard has opened a superyacht refit division called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7461" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tersan Marine (Company)">Tersan Marine</a>, with a large refit area in development covering a total of 200,000 square-metres in Oren, Turkey. After a brief conversation with Fatih Çelik, the Refit and Boatyard Manager Of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7461" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tersan Marine (Company)">Tersan Marine</a> confirmed this development and affirmed that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7461" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tersan Marine (Company)">Tersan Marine</a>’s facilities in Oren aims to make standard maintenance and refit works for superyachts. Whilst the work is still in progress, the facility recently unveiled an 820-ton travel lift and can accommodate superyachts up to 65-metres in the drydock area. The establishment of this facility, in cooperation with the Turkish government has created a refit ecosystem, attracting various nautical supply chain companies to the area.Regarding the future impact on the Turkish refit market and the Turkish superyacht sector as a whole, Bogdan highlighted that there are challenges with many skilled labourers moving to Europe or other destinations due to uncertainties. However, he acknowledges that this is a temporary period. “It is now imperative for companies to provide incentives to retain qualified personnel''. Cana Gökhan and Fatih Sürekli, partners in life and co-founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a>, are aboard 28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a>, the first in the new steel-hulled series of pocket superyachts they designed for boutique builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>. The yacht made her debut at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2023">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and our conversation has turned to the perception of Turkish yacht designers and their status in the industry.&nbsp;“It can be a disadvantage in this business if you’re not from the UK, Italy or Holland,” says Cana. “Even when we propose something better, the top yards will usually pick Italians or British designers, which is one reason why we set up a London office and moved there. But what hurts most is that the big Turkish players are the same. They have their comfort zone and want to work with overseas designers because that is how they sell boats, so why try something new?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296392/image/large-9364cd32a6ef49c0f5ec76faa2df081d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296392">She has a point. There is no intrinsic reason why the British, Italians or Dutch should make better designers. You could argue that the large yacht industry in Europe is older and more established, but Turkey now ranks third in the world after Italy and the Netherlands. Moreover, when you consider that Noah’s Ark may well have been built by Turkish shipwrights you realise that boat building is something they’ve been doing successfully for a very long time.“Attitudes are starting to change,” says Fatih. “There is a new generation of managers looking to beat their own path. They’re young, tech-savvy and much more willing to invest in home-grown talent.”&nbsp;One name that pops up is Emre Sandan, a contemporary of Cana and Fatih who shares a similar background. Cana graduated in architecture from Yıldız Technical University and worked for the Ulutas outfitting company before moving to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> in Istanbul where she was lead interior designer for the now defunct <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> brand and its highly regarded motoryacht series. While at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> she met Fatih, a naval architect who studied at the same university, as did Emre Sandan, who also worked at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> and other Turkish shipyards before recently setting up his own engineering company, Mes Marine.“There was a nucleus of designers and naval architects who graduated from Yıldız Technical University and started working in yachting when the Turkish industry was taking off,” says Fatih. “We were reunited with Emre when he was shipyard manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp Yachts</a> and we were chosen to create the exterior and interior design of the XSR series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286676/image/large-721d8b3c89275bae9dd7325a93babc55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286676">The first in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp</a>’s XSR 85 series, aptly named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a>, debuted at last year’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and stole the show with its youthful design ethos and bright Porsche Guards Red hull. Designed and built with intelligence, originality and a big dollop of fun, in terms of layout, creativity and efficiency the 26-metre yacht was in many ways a precursor to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s new displacement series.&nbsp;Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a>, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a> 92DS <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a> sports chunky crossover styling, but pushes the design boundaries even further. The raised pilothouse is positioned well forward to maximise the interior volumes and aft deck space, the vertical bow adds visual impact and increases the waterline length, and the two-tone paintwork introduces a striking new aesthetic. Not only is it <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s first displacement model, it is also the first steel-hulled yacht to be equipped with triple <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS propulsion.“The edgy proportions and exterior lines of the DS series are inspired by the design DNA of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s fast runabouts,” says Fatih. “The idea was to create something new and different with huge windows, generous interior volumes and big exterior spaces. Having the IPS engines so far aft helped a lot in terms of layout and meant we could create a massive beach club in the stern.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241189/image/large-9019ae7b530840f6c0924bdaf2f238a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241189">Cana’s interior design is based on a summerhouse aesthetic: cool, calming and casual with oak veneers, light-coloured fabrics and occasional stand-out statements like the backlit feature wall in the main salon made of thinly cut sections of stone. The couple made a conscious effort to avoid using rare materials and are firm believers in the ‘less is more’ school of thought summed up in Coco Chanel’s famous advice about fashion accessories: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”“We don’t like palatial or extravagant interiors,” says Cana, a keen sailor who recently completed an RYA Competent Crew Course in Southampton. “It’s a question of taste, of course, but if we don’t feel it we don’t do it. Luxury is not about stuffing boats full of rare and expensive materials; it’s more about taking away. Simplicity is better than embellishment. Just being out at sea with friends and family is a luxury in itself. The experience is what’s important and we’re already talking with clients about reducing the quantity of interior materials on board.”&nbsp;As nominal head of design at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> (they avoid formal titles) Cana jokes she is the brains behind the operation, but it is clear they relish being able to work together on both the interior and exterior design of projects along with their 10-person strong team in London and Istanbul.&nbsp;“I don’t like when there is a mismatch between the interior and exterior styling,” says Fatih. “It can sometimes be a surprise, but usually the effect is jarring. Among others, they designed the interior of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>’s 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10690" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="B.A.L.M.Y.47.3m (155'2&quot;)Mengi Yay Yachts2022">B.A.L.M.Y.</a> launched last year; oversaw the interior and exterior refit of 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atina 46.7m (153'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2008">Atina</a>, also relaunched last year; created the interior concept for the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering</a> 125, as well as the exterior and interior design of the “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13126" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion One43.8m (143'8&quot;)Orion Yachts2024">Orion One</a>” 43-metre motoryacht for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7235" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion Yachts (Company)">Orion Yachts</a>. They have also started work on a new 50-metre and just signed for a 63-metre project, both in Turkey and still confidential. ICE Kite, a wonderfully sleek 64-metre motoryacht designed in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> for a German client that makes use of a supplementary kite propulsion system, also looks like it is back on track three years after it was first presented.As relative newcomers, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> is not encumbered with the pressure to play it safe, which makes all the difference. Younger owners generally prefer open-plan spaces, outdoor living, unique experiences, holistic design and understated luxury. Cana and Fatih have locked on to these styling cues to imbue their projects with a contemporary vigour that is compelling and exciting.&nbsp;"There are so many boats out there that look the same," says Cana. “We like doing things differently and we don’t want to feel like we’re just designing another boat. We’ve been lucky so far that the yards we’ve worked with have all been bold and brave and also want to make an impact.
