Over that time it has witnessed shifts in materials, expectations and regulations, including the EU’s 2021 ban on old-growth teak from Myanmar, which have encouraged owners and shipyards to seek out high-performance alternatives. Fresh from completing one of its most technically demanding projects to date, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco’s</a> 111-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a> CEO Rientz Willem Bol discusses the company’s recent acquisitions, material R&amp;D, and long-term strategy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/389541/image/large-1834f21cd3fcb472d40fd788c16611fc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/389541">Last year, you acquired Nautifit in The Netherlands and Boteka in Florida. What was the rationale behind this?By bringing Nautifit into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a>, we increase customer value and expand our prefabrication capacity in Europe. This accelerates the development of new prefab applications and makes us faster, sharper and more creative in what we can offer our clients.Boteka has been a trusted partner of ours in the cruise ship sector for more than 14 years. The acquisition was driven by two key objectives. First, vertical integration. By bringing Boteka fully into the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a> organisation, we can keep everything we produce under one roof. Second, geographic reach. Having a strong base in the US allows us to operate across multiple continents and serve the global market with the same consistent standards.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374242/image/large-4f6cb53c5b0b2f91e00245841dcc6a16.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374242">What made&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a>&nbsp;such a complex project for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a>?What made this project unique was the close collaboration between the owner’s team, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a> throughout the design phase and execution. Compared to the scale of some of the cruise ship decking we’ve worked on, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a> is actually quite small. We were working with just a few thousand square metres compared to 10-20,000-square-metres on some of our larger projects. However, the time investment was comparable. This is because of the level of complexity and detail it required. We were working to an inspection tolerance of just 1.5 millimetres over three-metres – an unprecedented level of flatness and consistency for a yacht of this size. Achieving this meant deploying up to 16 highly skilled specialists on the project. Material choice added another layer of difficulty. The design required a blue pigment, which is among the most challenging colours to stabilise in resin-based systems. In many ways, we weren’t simply delivering a deck – we were realising a design object in its own right. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374254/image/large-dd7155f66c665783416d641846d8d349.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374254">How is R&amp;D currently shaping the development of synthetic decking?UV resistance is a major focus. Owners expect colour stability over many years, even with constant exposure in extreme climates, so improving long-term performance under UV load is critical. We’ve also developed so-called “cool pigments” and techniques to reduce surface temperature, making decks more comfortable to walk on in hot regions. We can now embed functional lighting directly into the deck. One example is helicopter landing areas: using gyroscopically informed lighting, the system changes colour in response to vessel movement, giving pilots immediate visual feedback on whether conditions are safe to land. This technology originated from our work on naval frigates, where safety requirements are uncompromising. Beyond materials, we are becoming much more data-driven as a company. By integrating sensors into decks, we can analyse how people move and behave onboard, allowing us to optimise functionality and safety.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374247/image/large-6da0558a1b1f317874e656c98e57635a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374247"> We still see a lot more teak decks on new builds than synthetic ones and it appears that, outside of technical areas, owners still want wood. What are your thoughts on this?&nbsp;We do see a shift in mindset, but we’re in a transition phase. When something old and familiar comes under pressure or begins to disappear, people initially look for something that comes as close as possible. Designers and owners often fall back on materials that reference familiar imagery and heritage, driven by aesthetics and emotion. In that search, choices are frequently made based on visual similarity, even if that means compromising on performance or longevity. That tendency usually persists until real-world use reveals that these materials age differently from the original, for example, by degrading more quickly or lacking essential properties such as wear resistance, or resistance to porosity and water absorption. At that point, the question shifts away from what looks similar, towards materials that not only feel right aesthetically, but also perform demonstrably in practice.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378026/image/large-e1d52fec9f5b48e54ce4354cd6459c91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378026"> As CEO, how do you see the future of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a>?The COVID period pushed many businesses into short-term, crisis-driven thinking and disrupted the relationship-building that normally underpins innovation. Now, in 2026, we can once again focus on long-term strategy. My focus is on innovation and striving to have a continuous process. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a>, that means an extended horizon and we talk about thinking 500 years ahead – not because it’s literally achievable, but because it shapes how we make decisions today. That mindset encourages durability, adaptability and responsibility in everything we develop.Finally, we are very excited about showing people all the innovative things we can achieve as a company and so we’ve built a two-storey Experience Centre of 4,000-square-metres where architects, designers, and industry professionals can see what’s technically possible. We’re keen to actively challenge the industry’s thinking and we want people to engage, question assumptions, and reimagine what’s possible with decking.

Shipyards are most often judged by what leaves the shed – size, design and technical ambition. By those measures, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s position within the upper tier of Northern European builders is well established. Less often examined, however, is how a builder sustains consistency as projects become increasingly complex.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388534/image/large-b2ccd786974c3724c2d70de3539dc839.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388534">To understand this requires looking beyond the finished yacht and into the internal structures that support it. In <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s case, organisational culture carries as much importance as engineering capability.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367151/image/large-8c382775b5a7c78db982332975e7d9ae.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367151">A people-first mindsetParis Baloumis has spent nearly two decades at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, spanning different ownership phases and leadership styles. Over that time, formal project management frameworks were introduced, transparency increased and facilities expanded. Alongside these visible changes, however, one principle has remained constant.“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> has always been, first and foremost, a human company,” says Paris. “From the very beginning, our success has come from our people, who care deeply about their work, take ownership of what they do and understand that extraordinary yachts are created through teamwork and shared ambition.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378677/image/large-95b260286ebcb39540f638f7f82168a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378677">To reinforce this culture, leadership structures have evolved to become less performative and more functional. Hierarchy still exists, but its role is supportive rather than directive. In practice, this means decision-making sits close to the point of execution, with input valued regardless of job title.“Each project team works physically alongside the yacht during the build, moving with the project between our facilities in Zwijndrecht and Alblasserdam and operating from an open workspace directly next to the yacht, where the owner’s team and key subcontractors also work side by side,” explains Paris. “If something changes on board, the relevant people can quickly review the situation together and agree on the next step without unnecessary layers of hierarchy or administration.”This approach runs counter to a common instinct within high-risk, high-value construction environments, where control is often centralised as complexity increases. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s model distributes responsibility instead, relying on clearly defined roles and mutual trust to manage risk.Motivation and recognition also play an important role. During the build of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> hosted a family day where the families of the project team and crew were invited to see the skill and dedication behind the yacht. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DreAMBoat111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">DreAMBoat</a> was delivered, the celebration again included those who helped build her, allowing everyone to share in the pride of the finished yacht. Equal importance is also placed on creating small moments for teams to step away from the project and spend time together, recognising that reconnecting outside the work environment often brings renewed energy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388533/image/large-a5b44a9493e139983b10ae4757c8f41d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388533">Partnership as practice<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s culture extends to the wider network it works with. Key subcontractors are described internally as ‘Co-makers’, reflecting long-term partnerships built on trust and transparency. These relationships can have a direct impact on project outcomes, particularly when it comes to capacity planning.A recent example came during the builds of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DreAMBoat111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">DreAMBoat</a>, which were delivered just two weeks apart. “Delivering two complex projects so close together creates significant pressure across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> and for our Co-makers,” says Edske Smit Project Director “But because we had already been discussing capacity and potential risks several years in advance, we were able to plan and adapt together. By looking at both projects from a broader <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> perspective rather than only individual contracts, teams could shift people and resources where they were needed most.”&nbsp;Transparency therefore becomes an operational necessity. Problems are surfaced early, with the expectation that accountability and learning follow disclosure rather than blame. This approach becomes particularly crucial when projects come under commercial or schedule pressure.“Because many of our Co-makers are long-term partners, there is already a strong level of trust that allows us to act quickly and solve challenges together,” Edske Smit adds. “We communicate clearly about the targets we need to meet and the risks we are prepared to accept, so expectations remain aligned. Mirabella) for his ex-wife’s 50th birthday turned into the start of a lifelong passion. “I thought I was going to be miserable. Instead, I discovered this incredible way to spend time with friends and family.”That first charter led to many more. Then came ownership. Then, inevitably, came shipbuilding. Today, Newell not only owns a growing fleet, but also lives full-time at sea. “Other than a couple of months in 2021, I’ve been living onboard ever since the pandemic,” he said, leaning back in his chair on screen. Beyond the traditional yachts, however, lies an array of research platforms, including the 68.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tacoma Boat Building Co (Company)">Tacoma Boat Building</a> vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10637" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dagon68.28m (224'0&quot;)Tacoma Boat Building Co1985">Dagon</a> which operates as a full-ocean-depth surface platform and the 55.75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Auroux (Company)">Auroux</a> vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydra55.75m (182'11&quot;)Auroux1974">Hydra</a> which is designed for coastal studies.&nbsp;He also has a 35-metre sportfisher in development at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/474" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Developments (Company)">Yachting Developments</a>, that will travel with the main boat and the support boat, and has signed an agreement with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4590" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vard Group AS (Company)">Vard</a> for the 100-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/15856" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RV6000100.0m (328'1&quot;)Vard Group AS2028">RV6000</a>, which will carry a 6,000-metre-capable remotely operated vehicle for submarine rescue and ocean science, and the research vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/17142" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RV11000162.0m (531'6&quot;)Vard Group AS2030">RV11000</a>, which is still in development.&nbsp;While the fleet is diverse, the vision is consistent that yachts are not just used as platforms for leisure, but as tools for exploration and science. Through Inkfish, his marine research organisation, Newell supports scientists with access to deep-sea technology, from advanced ROVs to mapping equipment. “Our focus is to be a service organisation to the scientific community,” he explained. “We ask scientists directly, what’s helpful? Sometimes that means getting them to critical parts of the ocean. Sometimes it means grants to process the data we collect. The point is to be led by science, not by ego.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367974/image/large-ea8d38f7ced1d8b2d5c392d963d93997.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367974">At one point during the call, he described how high-school students had boarded his research vessels, watching specimens being prepared, and later wrote to ask when the boats would return. He smiled as he recounted their excitement: “That’s the impact I want to see. When the community says, ‘You’re coming back? Hooray!’ then we know we’re doing it right.”If his research ambitions are ambitious, his philosophy as a yacht owner is just as striking. Newell has imported the mindset of a software engineer into yacht design, thinking in terms of productivity and user experience.On <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a>, for instance, the deck is not teak but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a>. “I’d rather the crew spend less time polishing decks and more time interacting with guests,” he said. “It’s about maximising the valuable experiences onboard. Do you want your crew polishing chrome, or taking your child out on a Jet Ski? To me, it’s obvious.”That approach extends deeper, with crew actively designing tenders, galleys and operational spaces. “We started by asking our dive team to design their own tender. The results were so good that we realised, the more you involve the crew in design, the better the outcomes.” On screen, he gave a small shrug as if to say the idea was obvious, though it represents a radical departure from how most yachts are conceived.Few yacht owners speak as comfortably about CNC machining, AI models or pressure vessels as they do about cruising grounds. For Newell, technology is not an accessory to his yachting, but the foundation of it. A self-taught machinist who once kept a five-axis CNC mill in his living room, he now funds advanced material research. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367451/image/large-26f50ff0e23faff563f5ba25af0026b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367451">One project in partnership explores aluminium oxynitride, a transparent ceramic stronger than titanium. “It’s so strong that titanium becomes the gasket material,” he said, eyes lighting up through the video link. The aim, to build a fully transparent, full-ocean-depth submersible hull.Newell was also an early funder of OpenAI, and speaks enthusiastically about applying machine learning to shipbuilding. “Putting stress and strain gauges everywhere, collecting time-series data and comparing it to model predictions, that’s where AI can validate and improve design. It’s about putting shipbuilding in front of the wave of technological advancement.”Examples already in place include pathogen-detection systems onboard to identify influenza or RSV, and discussions around bridge systems that use augmented reality to detect submerged objects at night. “Machine vision is already better than humans in many cases,” he said. “It’s just about integrating it in a way that enhances safety.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/372683/image/large-fde494e79d89a678a296d7074c300d04.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/372683">Gabe Newell acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> in August 2025, stating he intends to support and reinforce its existing culture, which he views as effective, principled and forward-looking. The investment in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> itself stemmed not from a cold business calculation, but from a sense of belonging. Building <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a> with the yard’s CEO Marcel Onkenhout and his team created a natural partnership for Newell.“It didn’t feel adversarial. It felt like collaboration,” Newell explained. “I was fanboying all over Marcel and his team. The quality made me root for them. Eventually it was like, how can I be part of this team too?” The result was a formal stake in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, but with a philosophy that profit alone is not the driver. “The goal is to create happy customers. Profit is just the signal that you’re doing better than others. My focus is on how to make already brilliant yachts even more valuable to owners.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/365665/image/large-908318675f42f6a91544e68f54985a77.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/365665">For Newell, the process of designing and building yachts has become as much a joy as the finished vessels themselves. “I’ll actually be sad when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a> is delivered, because I’ve loved working with the team,” he admitted via the video link. Asked whether he will always be building yachts, he admitted that it's an ongoing conversation and that there will always be interesting opportunities to move technology forward in the industry, in ways that might be too risky to ask another owner to take on. “In those cases, we could look at a speculative project or something I’d build myself, which gives the yard more design freedom. But it depends on what the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> wants to try.”It is a revealing answer. For an industry often shrouded in secrecy, Newell brings not only capital and innovation, but a refreshing openness. He jokes about his cats, shares anecdotes of his children, and speaks earnestly about wanting yachts to be seen as good actors in the communities they visit.Marcel, speaking towards the end of the call, agreed wholeheartedly. “What has always bothered me most in 30 years is the secrecy and gossip,” he reflected. “In the years ahead, we want to lead by example, and transparency will be part of that.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367971/image/large-02a0541df7b4d8e25e92bf73af030e34.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367971">Gabe also noted that many of his peers in the American tech world “aren’t nearly as aware of yachts and yachting as a lot of people in Europe,” and that simply getting them onboard could be transformative. “It’s a little like shooting fish in a barrel,” he said with a grin. “There are so many people who would never think about yachts, but once they experience it, they’ll realise it has an important role to play in their lives.” For Newell, the challenge lies in making the sales process experiential, because simply getting potential owners onboard, he argued, is often enough to change perceptions entirely.As the call drew to a close, he turned the tables on the assembled journalists: “What do you want <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> to do?” It was a fitting end from a man whose career has been built on questioning assumptions, listening closely and then reimagining what is possible.

2024 Oceanco yacht design getaway

Oceanco, in collaboration with Bolidt and Esthec, hosted the annual Yacht Design Getaway in Rotterdam.
