Here, Frances and Michael Howorth assess the sometimes complex nature of the relationship between superyacht brokers and shipyards. This feature appeared in the very first issue of the SuperYacht Times newspaper published back in 2014.

The relationship between sales brokers and the shipyards that build superyachts is both important and, by its very nature, complex. There exists between the two, a love-hate relationship that either works or does not. To some shipyards, the idea of having to deal with a prospective owner through the middleman is viewed as interference, whilst to others, that same person is the grease on the cog that keeps the essential wheels in motion from start of negotiations to delivery of a finished vessel.

 

In much the same way, brokers prefer working with shipyards that understand their work philosophy and value their input. Jan Jaap Minnema - a hugely accomplished broker with Fraser Worldwide - says, “Some shipyards have more experience of working with brokers and their clients and are better able to identify the needs of the broker who is representing the buyer. Shipyards need to accommodate the brokers by supplying information they need, such as GA’s, planning, delivery schedule, technical questions.”

The relationship between the two needs to be flexible and understanding to the point that either side can be contacted after business hours for updates, and to talk through change of plans made by clients. If the yard knows that you are a knowledgeable, broker and have questions that can add value, they are mostly all happy to work with you.

 

Patrick Coote of Blohm + Voss told us, “Enquiries for new projects can come directly from clients, indirectly through a broker or indeed via a multitude of weird and wonderful routes. Ultimately, the most important thing is simply that the enquiry reaches the shipyard. Far from being parasitic or even symbiotic, the relationship between shipyards and brokers is unquestionably mutualistic. Our priority is simply to ensure they know that our response to their enquiries will always be fast, accurate, comprehensive and honest.”

There are also those in the superyacht industry who believe when it comes to signing a new build that the role of broker is of vital importance. Mark Cavendish, Sales and Marketing Director for Heesen Yachts, believes in cultivating their attention and putting their sales activities to the forefront when it comes to selling their fast displacement yachts. “Ordinarily, outside brokers account for 50% of our sales year-on-year,” he says.

 

The company is well known within brokerage circles for hosting its annual brokers ski trip when about 20 or so Heesen staff invite up to 30 brokers from around the world to join them for a three day stay in the Italian Dolomites for a promotional, fun event. Cavendish explains, “It's rather like when Rolls Royce or Bentley gather their top salesmen from independent car showrooms and introduce them to a new and upcoming model. We do that by taking over the small 5 Star, Rosa Alpina Hotel in San Cassiano each year and introduce a yacht that we are building on spec in the hope that they may have a better understanding of what it will offer to their client.”

The relationship twixt broker and client should never be underestimated. Often it has been built on years of mutual understanding and many owners would never dream of entering into a relationship directly with a shipyard without their trusted broker by their side. For many years the serial yacht owner, John Staluppi, has relied on the advice of Peter Thompson, a superyacht Captain turned broker.

 

Thompson has worked in the industry for over 30 years and is now a partner with Worth Avenue Yachts in Monaco. His own experience representing owners in dealings with shipyards suggests things are changing, “What I find problematic,” he says, “Is that shipyards are now trying to take ‘ownership’ of clients soon after you have introduced them. It’s an unpleasant situation to encounter. Brokers like me have only got two commodities when it comes to selling our services: our integrity and our contacts. We handle both with the respect that each deserves but there are shipyards out there that simply do not respect that... In this business there should be more respect and integrity between the team players.”

Luuk V. van Zanten, Founder and Marketing Director at Curvelle, believes that as a yacht builder the relationship he has with a new-build competent sales broker who has been hired by the client to represent him, is a vital link in the yacht selling process. He comments, “As with any small shipyard it is difficult cover all the marketing and sales aspects over several sales channels and thus especially for new custom constructions, we very much welcome to work with competent brokers that are representing a specific client.”

 

In fact, Van Zanten would like to strengthen the current system between brokers and shipyards. He adds, “In most cases the broker gets paid a commission by the shipyard for introducing a customer and then goes on to represent both the client and the shipyard in contract negotiations to make the construction contract a reality. As an alternative arrangement we think that it will be more beneficial to all parties that the yard and the client each pay 50% of the broker’s fee. Since both client and shipyard make use of the broker’s skills and knowledge, it will be easier for the broker to act as a true middleman required by and paid for by both parties for the duration of the construction.”

Equally, there are those in the superyacht industry who believe that when it comes to new build yachts the role of broker has been greatly diminished. John Leonida is a partner with the law firm Clyde &amp; Co in London. In his opinion, “Today more deals are getting done with no brokerage involvement at all, especially by experienced yacht owners... I am not certain that shipyards are as centrally focused on brokers the way they used to be. It was the case that in the past, shipyards perceived that deals were in the gift of the brokers. Pre-2000 when our knowledge of what could be built was limited, it was the specialist knowledge of very good brokers, that made shipyards crave their attention and offer commission.”

Insight: Superyacht brokers and shipyards

The Genoa Boat Show is reporting positive features in terms of visitors numbers. The show claimed over 100,000 visitors came to the event. That said, the future of the show as a superyacht show, is not entirely certain<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150978/image/large-fd95d03eff79fbbdbbdec1042efd0694.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150978">The event organisers declare themselves satisfied: "The first feedbacks coming in are positive", stated Anton Francesco Albertoni, President of I Saloni Nautici. "The operators, apart from reporting an abundance in terms of visitors number, highlight the presence of highly-motivated people. The Boat Show is revealing itself as a proper marketplace for boat sales".Amongst visitors was Angelino Alfano, Italian Minister of Interior, who visited the show on a private family trip. He commented: "The maritime sector represents the Italian pride: it means growth, progress, and employment. It is also emblem of that Made in Italy that is excellence in a global perspective. It was a major mistake to surround the nautical sector with an atmosphere of terror that had its effect even on someone who only wanted to buy an ordinary dinghy, and it was a huge error to put a sector so important for the country economy in this negative fiscal condition. This is the reason why we took measures to eliminate taxes introduced by the previous governments. This one could be the Boat Show that will mark the turning point, the year of the recovery”.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150979/image/large-fa214e7be8ad4a34612cd637df6a5e9f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150979">Despite these positive words by the Minister, the future of the show as a superyacht show remains uncertain. The absence of several major players in the superyacht sector, and the small number of superyachts at the show, might indicate that the show is becoming of lesser importance to that sector.Several yards I met at the show, expressed that the many of their clients nowadays choose to visit the Cannes and Monaco shows over Genoa. One major absentee was Azimut Benetti, who leading up to the show claimed that after a careful analysis of the return expected from attending the Boat Show, the yard's management decided not attend the show this year. Ferretti have also recognised the decreasing functionality of the show, although have remained in attendance this year as a sign of support for the Italian industry, they have expressed a notable hope for change in the future.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150980/image/large-a5ff5109ed713613dd70327503cb2f81.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150980">All in all, there were only around 10 yachts over 30 metres in length at the show this year. Sanlorenzo brought the biggest fleet to Genoa, which is no surprise, as Sanlorenzo's chairman, Massimo Perotti, is also the president of Ucina, the Italian marine industry association which acts as the patron of the Genoa show. Other exhibitors bringing 30m+ yachts included FIPA, who brought the AB116 Musa, from 2009, Italian builder Permare, who brought their 30 metre Amer Cento, and Curvelle, who brought their 34 metre Quaranta.Speaking to Curvelle's Luuk V. van Zanten about the show, he commented "Curvelle was pleased to introduce it's flagship the Curvelle Quaranta to the Italian public. Although the number of qualified visitors was difficult to judge compared to the Cannes show, we were still pleased to have participated in the Genova show and were very well received. Many Italian people complimented us on the fresh and innovative design features that a superyacht catamaran like Quaranta offers and that new design ideas are needed to boost the industry."<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150981/image/large-951748e74662cfa4bf1eaacbd9560900.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150981">On the lower end of the scale, business seemed to be brisk. Pietro Vassena, owner of Lepanto yachting and UCINA representative for the small boat production, seems more than satisfied: “We got here already optimist compared to 2013, because we had already been receiving quote requests for months. The good news, in fact, is that we got back to selling to new clients. I regret not having taken more sales people to the show.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150982/image/large-a56d095d4a273534c7fff1c75f17382d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150982">Amongst mixed signals about the success of the show for the superyacht sector, were strong rumours that the show will be moved to the spring, perhaps in an attempt to outperform both the Cannes and Monaco shows, although there are still drawbacks to such a dramatic alteration in date, such as the possible lack of new boats available to display, and the added cost for exhibitors to exhibit at another edition, just 7 months after this year's show. If the show will be moved, it won't be for at least another year, as the dates for 2015 have already been set from September 30th, to October 5th.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150983/image/large-c91fa785e34ea44135604612ae288a6d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150983">One exhibitor opted that in the future, the show dates might coincide with the MYBA show, also taking place in Genoa in May. It appears however that that show has decided to move the show to another location, away from Genoa, once their contract in Genoa expires.Even though the show has lost some of it grandeur from previous editions, the organizers made a genuine effort to boots business. I was part of a large group of media and international trade, who were invited to the show, and were whisked around Genoa. Our program did not just include boat show visits, but also included a varied night program, organized to promote the city of Genoa itself.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150984/image/large-45b944ea47eae053966d144ca396b255.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150984">We'll be following the show's developments closely.By Maarten Janssen

The future of the Genoa Boat Show

The 34.10 metre Curvelle Quaranta made her premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival last week. Curvelle founder Luuk V. van Zanten reported that the vessel on display attracted an unprecedented amount of visitors and took the title of most visited superyacht this year. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150579/image/large-deaf6edb0e3aca48fa514f8e59f7b0ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150579">Among the reactions from visitors - which included a number of brokers, designers and yacht industry professionals - the most frequently repeated quotes were in reference to the yachts space and flexibility. Some of these comments include, "A 34 metre that feels like a 43 metre,”; "Very impressive layout flexibility through intelligent design," and "Refreshing innovation.” Many visitors commented on the six awards the yacht has deservedly already won.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150580/image/large-cec32be60224c2e574f3b74c8f1f3967.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150580">The Quaranta is a catamaran superyacht and the flagship model of the Curvelle range. She obviously is, but she is so much more. It is upon further inspection that her various unique features become apparent, most of which are the result of her being a catamaran. The latter is conveniently stored on an integrated aft deck platform, which lowers into the water for easy access. This lifting platform can also be used to store a mini submarine, two seater amphibious plane, SUV car, or as a beach club. The platform can also be utilised to offer disabled guests a comfortably and safe area for swimming and other outdoor activities. This is obvious when examining the layout possibilities in the guest suite area. All located on the main deck, with the full beam master suite fore, quaranta offers surprising flexibility for guest accommodation, with a range of possibilities for layouts. From 3 to 6 spacious guest suites, the main deck accommodations offer incredible variety for large staterooms, optionally paired with big private saloons, and spacious, light en suites. Each room has a big panoramic window which assures an impressive amount of natural light and wonderful views everwhere. A large port side saloon and a wonderfully spacious starboard stateroom are combined with beautifully designed his and hers en suites, with a large tub and separate shower areas. The styling is light, fresh and gently contemporary, all with a soft, subtly classic ambiance. The big, L-shaped lounging sofa in the master suite saloon is a perfect spot to sit back and relax, taking in the delightful views, enjoying quaranta's friendly luxurious nature. The central saloon is open and cozy, with a large L-shaped lounge area, games table, bar and pantry area, plus direct access to the semi-open formal dining room aft. The brand new superyacht quaranta in Pendik Marina

On Saturday February 23rd at 3.30am superyacht quaranta was taken out of the Tuzla shipyard shed on to the public road by a huge trailer capable of transporting goods up to three hundred tons. Based on the successful 110’, quaranta design, whose launch is imminent, the “Plus USA” shows off the same fluid lines by in house Italian designer and stylist Mauro Gamboi. Originally conceived by request from an American client, the Curvelle design team have refined the concept of “informal living”. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142868/image/large-26587f322cefa36e500c7442624df049.jpg" alt="" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142868">While the vessel has grown in length by 2 meters over her soon to be launched “sistership”, the largest difference is the layout of the upper deck , which has been enclosed to accommodate the pilothouse and a skylounge, allowing a “country galley” to be incorporated into the “main living deck”, forward, in place of the traditional wheelhouse location on a “triple deck” yacht. “Americans tend to be less formal in their approach to boating” states Kevin Ralph, North American representative for Curvelle Yachts, “ and the informal “country galley” has become a staple part of the design in most American orientated vessels in this size range”. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142869/image/large-492868026b3bfddc4ae91f9af8fd75dc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142869">Indeed the US version of the “Plus” features the eat-in, “country galley” forward on the “living deck”, which not only allows for a fantastic vantage point, with a 180 degree view forward, but also offers access to a large dining area on the raised foredeck, which can be covered by a sun shade, for great al fresco dining, while in port or at anchor.While the quaranta Plus USA still retains Curvelle’s signature, large, on deck “convertible” guest cabins (4 in total) the forward section of the main deck has been designed as a palatial 760 sq. ft. owners suite, more akin to that found on 55m+ superyachts. With large picture windows and featuring a king size bed, dual walk-in closets, his and hers bathrooms, plus an ensuite study, in addition to the option of an adjoining gym/spa room, which can also be accessed from the companionway. Moving the galley from the port hull, to the upper deck, also creates more space in the crew quarters, with the option to add an additional crew cabin for 2, giving the Captain his own double cabin in the starboard hull. Other features include a larger tender platform, which allows boats or submarines of up to 19’ (6.0m) to be lowered into the water, while doubling as a swimming pool/spa when in the water. The Curvelle naval architects, Incat Crowther, have also re-designed the hull form, allowing for a shallower draft to allow more extensive cruising in the Bahamas. Curvelle Yachts unveils superyacht power catamaran quaranta Plus USA

Superyacht builder Curvelle has teamed up with leading Dutch supplier Lift Emotion, to create an elevator solution for the yard’s superyacht power catamaran 'quaranta'. Curvelle is currently putting the final touches on this unique compact superyacht on a highly stable catamaran hull form, which is due to be delivered this spring. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142502/image/large-dc73f63a15041a1b62cb2f9902da7241.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140704">When the Curvelle team researched options on how to create the ideal custom yacht solution for owners or guests with reduced mobility, the need for an elevator was quickly identified. "Our original research found that superyacht owners very often had older parents who need wheelchair assistance and found it frustrating that they could not be included in the cruising itinerary", Curvelle founder Luuk V. van Zanten comments. “That's why we addressed this factor right from the start. We obviously prioritised getting the project underway and starting the build of the first yacht, which incidentally is on schedule, before we completed the design scheme for a more specialised custom yacht where we added a glazed lift”. It comes as no surprise that Curvelle entrusted Lift Emotion to come up with a custom solution. Mike Brandt explains: “Within the limits of the applicable regulations, we are capable of designing every elevator desired by customer or architect, as was the case with the Curvelle quaranta ”. “Putting a three deck guest elevator on a 34 metre yacht, is quite a challenge, but we managed to create an attractive, and unique solution. As far as I know, this is the first elevator solution on a yacht this size” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142503/image/large-afb43efd8b89c2c5a974145292a24d3f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140706">Despite the limited space available on the 34 metre yacht, Lift Emotion created plans for a glass elevator, running from the main deck, where all the guest accommodation is located, all the way up to the sun deck. “The elevator on the sun deck is cleverly incorporated at the front of the fixed bimini which has been extended forward to incorporate this feature”, Luuk explains. Even though the first Curvelle, which is scheduled to hit the water in a couple of weeks, is not yet fitted with an elevator, all the plans for adding one at a stage are already in place. Superyacht builder Curvelle teams up with Lift Emotion

Due to be delivered March 2013, the spacious Curvelle Quaranta will be available for select charter for summer 2013 in the West Mediterranean, through Hill Robinson. The Quaranta has four decks and a nine metre beam.
