Destry highlighted an increased demand for multiple dining spaces, more casual interiors and buffet-style dining options, while Dan explained that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated these changes, with owners seeking more wellness areas, beach clubs and versatile spaces that can be adapted for different functions. Yiannis and Dan acknowledged the challenges of integrating sustainable materials, while ensuring they meet the functional and aesthetic standards expected in superyachts. Clarke of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison Yachting</a>.&nbsp;The session began with an overview of the American superyacht market, with each panellist sharing their observations. Stefano noted the positive influence of events like Black Friday on sales, but acknowledged the challenges relating to tariff-related volatility. Alex Clarke characterised the current period as a transition year, with the industry adapting to shifting regulations and market dynamics.The panel explored how the industry is adjusting to the specific needs of American clients. Stefano Arlunno highlighted the importance of face-to-face interaction and customised designs to meet client expectations. The panellists also emphasised the importance of sustainability and the cultural differences in client preferences, noting a growing demand for open areas and outdoor living spaces among American buyers.Alex observed a slowdown in 2023 and 2024, with signs of a resurgence expected in 2025. Ralph Dazert and Alex concluded that there is still some disparity in the used yacht market between the price expectations of sellers and those of buyers. Moderated by Features Editor Emma Dailey, the intimate discussion touched upon topics including their entry into yacht ownership, refitting, crew destinations, tenders, advice for aspiring yacht owners and more.A key theme throughout was the importance of approaching yacht ownership with patience, planning and realism. Merle Hinrich advised that time is one of the most essential investments – not just in the initial build or refit, but also in ongoing maintenance and crucially, in using the yacht to its fullest potential. He recommended that prospective owners carefully consider how they intend to use their yacht, ensuring that the design and layout reflect their lifestyle, whether focused on long passages, diving, fishing, entertaining, or quiet relaxation.Matthew Csidei, owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1958" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chanticleer33.0m (108'3&quot;)Burger Boat Company1973">Chanticleer</a>, echoed these sentiments and advised first-time buyers to avoid taking on vessels in poor condition. His early mistake of purchasing a yacht despite warning signs on the survey became a pivotal learning moment. He strongly recommends purchasing a yacht that is already in excellent or near-excellent condition, allowing owners to focus on making personal improvements rather than becoming burdened with extensive and costly refits.On the financial side, both panellists stressed honesty and realism. Matthew underlined the importance of understanding the full cost of yacht ownership – from annual running expenses to depreciation. His advice was clear: if the numbers cause hesitation or stress, ownership may not be the right choice. He frequently encourages potential buyers to fully grasp their financial comfort level before making a commitment, explaining that yacht ownership should bring pleasure, not anxiety.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/354034/image/large-25f40e38257cd7c786b6b6ea41630849.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/354034">Selecting the right captain was another key recommendation. Matthew described a captain as the cornerstone of enjoyable ownership. A capable captain can manage crew, maintenance, and operations, allowing the owner to relax and enjoy the yacht. He advised owners to do whatever is necessary to retain exceptional captains, even tailoring the yacht’s location around their preferences. Merle agreed, emphasising the value of long-term relationships with captains and crew, who play a vital role in maintaining the vessel and enhancing the ownership experience.When it comes to refits, both owners advised cautious, well-planned approaches. Merle highlighted the need for patience and finding trusted professionals who understand the owner’s needs and the vessel’s purpose. He credited his success to having a reliable global network that could assist with recommendations and services regardless of location. Matthew added that the choice of refit location matters greatly. He suggested balancing budget and stress levels — shipyards in Turkey, for example, might be cost-effective but more stressful, while those in Holland are more expensive but deliver high standards with fewer complications.Another noteworthy recommendation involved tender selection. Merle suggested starting the yacht design process around the tender, especially for explorer yachts intended for remote cruising and diving. The tender, he explained, becomes an essential tool for safe guest transfers and specific activities like diving and fishing. Her HVAC system, for instance, has been designed to reduce and recover waste heat which is then used for onboard climate control. Her styling will flaunt the class and comfort expected onboard a German build, without compromising her ecological commitment.
