Breathe Easy on superyacht Huracan refit

Dometic Marine, supplier of marine air conditioning and sanitation systems, has recently appointed Dennis Chiang as OEM and aftermarket sales manager for the Asia Pacific. METS 2010: Dometic Marine expands safe range to include luxury safes

Dometic Marine has recently delivered its highest specification of air conditioning system to the Turkish market, to Superyacht Builder RMK Marine. The 600,000 BTU system has been custom designed and built by Dometic Marine Engineers in accordance with the specific owner’s representative requirements for an RMK Marine 45 metre yacht. The custom built air conditioning system incorporates a 600,000 BTU chiller plant, WhisperCool air handlers, Variable Frequency Drives, Fully Networked Cabin Controllers and a Marine Air chilled water master controller. Having successfully delivered the system, Dometic Marine’s engineers will assist RMK Marine during the layout and installation. They will also commission the project at the end of the installation process, expected Spring 2010, to verify the system and ensure that all equipment meets the exacting Dometic installation standard. “Our latest project with RMK Marine is an excellent example of our capability to customize solutions to meet specific OEM requirement. Dometic Group creates new Marine Division

Dometic, the world leader in marine air conditioning and sanitation systems and equipment, shows the Cruisair MTD low profile chiller at London International Boat Show. The nine model series ranges from 24,000 to 120,000 BTU/hr (2-10 tons) capacity and its compact, modular design will appeal to builders and designers seeking more efficient use of on-board spaces. In line with other air conditioning units from Dometic, the Cruisair MTD provides maximum performance and reliability coupled with flexible installation and ease of maintenance. The Cruisair MTD series has been designed to appeal to the widest range of builder specifications. To achieve capacities beyond 120,000 BTU/hr, multiple modules can be utilised; custom frame and water-manifold installations are also available for multiple use. Each unit can be made available with a range of compressors according to the available power system. As each unit has two sub-modules with identical dimensions, where space is limited they can be separated for remote mounting. Thermal expansion valves optimise performance over a wide range of conditions, while a hot-gas bypass valve maintains heating performance in cold seawater and helps prevent water freezing in the heat exchanger. The unit’s ability to heat in seawater temperatures as low as 3.5°C (38°F) removes the need for a separate fossil-fuel or electric water heater in most applications. The Cruisair MTD comes with a scroll compressor as standard and faster condensate drainage is achieved with the inclusion of larger drain fittings. The seawater headers are connected to condensers via flexible hose to improve alignment for customer connections and added strength is provided by reinforced stainless-steel seawater connections. For ease of maintenance, the seawater manifolds are removable to allow cleaning of the condenser tubing. Start-up power surges can be eliminated through the addition of optional Variable Frequency Drives (VDFs), which will also run the unit at full capacity 60Hz even when a 50Hz input exists. Dometic introduces Cruisair MTD Series low profile chiller

Dometic Environmental has developed three new types of air handlers created to work with its line of circulated-water air conditioning systems for large yachts and workboats. The new ATL, ABL and ATV models offer tight-space resolutions for installation in both horizontal and vertical spaces. “The new air handlers offer a large variety of solutions to accommodate virtually every different type of installation scenario,” said Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Environmental. “In addition, each unit is designed to reduce noise and secondary condensation.” The ATL series is a draw-through air handler for chilled-water applications. While built-in vibration isolation controls noise, the low-profile design is ideal for overhead applications where height is limited. The electrical box can be mounted remotely up to six feet from the handler, allowing for additional installation options where space is limited. The ABL air handlers include two quiet DC blowers that can be adjusted to push air in different directions. At just under a foot tall, this unit can be mounted from above or below. The ATV air handler has a total depth of less than 10 inches and is engineered to fit in tight places. The powerful DC blower can be rotated to distribute air vertically or horizontally and is designed for ducted applications. All units contain a foam-lined anti-slosh, anti-fungal condensate drain pan and use corrosion-resistant materials. Insulating foam covers the condensate drain pan, blower housing, shroud and coil end cover to help reduce noise and secondary condensation.

Dometic Environmental develops new series of air handlers for chiller line

Dometic Environmental has introduced a new series of pump packages for their line of chilled-water air conditioning systems for large yachts and workboats. The pump package combines several essential components into one unit, including a chilled-water pump, expansion tank, pump drain pan, dual-scale pressure gauge and fill assembly. “We created this all-in-one package for chilled-water systems to eliminate the need to install each piece separately,” said Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Environmental. “The result is a quicker and easier installation.” The package features a bladder-style expansion tank that prevents the tank’s air from dissolving in the water. Air in the tank allows the water to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations to relieve pressure that may otherwise result in leaks. The dual-scale pressure gauge connects to an inlet pipe for the most accurate reading of system return water pressure. It reads in both pounds per square inch and kilopascal to accommodate both U.S. and international users. The pump package is available in seven different models in varying voltages, amps and air handler capacity.

Dometic Environmental introduces new pump package for chillers

Dometic Environmental Corporation has introduced a new series of multi-ton marine chiller units for circulated-water air conditioning systems on megayachts and workboats. The chillers, available in 20- and 25-ton capacities, are being marketed under Dometic’s Marine Air brand.The new chillers are unitized modules that include a hermetic scroll compressor, shell-and-tube condenser, brazed plate exchangers and thermal expansion valves, along with other mechanical and electrical components on a single chassis. The space-saving design facilitates installation in tight spaces. Multiple chiller units can be staged as needed to meet the HVAC requirements for very large vessels. “The new chiller, with its shell-and-tube condenser instead of multiple condenser coil windings, provides an attractive alternative to large rack-mounted arrays of four or five smaller-capacity chillers,” said Charlie Barefoot, vice president of engineering for Dometic Environmental. “It also provides for more efficient performance and easier field service.”Other important improvements include a sub-cooler for enhanced performance in warm seawater temperatures, a high-capacity filter/dryer protects the compressor and other components from contaminants, flanged water connections for easy hookup and a new-design flowswitch for robust protection against low-flow conditions. Other safety measures include high -and low-pressure switches, pressure relief valve, high-limit switch and freeze protection. Heat is provided by one or two electric heating elements in each module. A separate heater barrel is not required.

Dometic introduces new line of large chillers for megayachts

At the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this week, Dometic Environmental Corporation is unveiling its next-generation Q-Logic series digital controls for Cruisair-brand marine air conditioning systems. The Q-Logic control system will be offered on new Cruisair direct-expansion air conditioning products, including the new breakthrough Turbo self-contained air conditioners. It will also be sold as a retrofit upgrade for existing product installations through the Cruisair dealer network. The Q-Logic system includes two choices of cabin controls. The Q3 is a basic LED digital display/control panel, while the Qht is a high-technology Euro-style panel with a bright high-resolution LCD screen. Both display options work with a standard Q-Logic power-logic circuit board in the air conditioning unit’s electrical box. The Q3 and Qht control panels are designed for easy, intuitive adjustment of temperature setpoint and airflow in the cooling and heating mode. The user can also put the system into an automatic dehumidification mode at the touch of a single key. The Q-Logic system also offers 29 user-programmable functions to fine-tune the system’s operation and performance to meet individual preferences and the boat’s unique requirements. The Q-Logic technology is also designed to support CAN Bus technology for boats with networked systems. The Q-Logic controls have extensive built-in alarms and safeguards to protect the air conditioning system, with automatic shutdown in the event of any potentially damaging condition such as high or low refrigerant pressures or input voltages. “The Q-Logic controls are the latest new products to emerge from our Dometic product-development labs,” said Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Environmental Corporation. “Our engineering teams developed these new state-of-the-art digital systems to meet the needs of our customers for flexible, reliable, cost-effective controls that are easy to install and easy to use.”

Dometic introduces new digital control for cruisair air conditioning systems

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) last week recognized Dometic Environmental Corporation for introducing one of the most innovative new products for the U.S. boating industry. Dometic’s new Turbo marine air conditioning system was one of ten new products to receive NMMA Innovation Awards at the International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX). The Innovation Awards are organized by NMMA and judged by a panel of experts from Boating Writers International (BWI). The Turbo product won the Innovation Award for the Mechanical Systems category. The product, marketed under Dometic’s Marine Air and Cruisair brands, was unveiled earlier this year at the Miami International Boat Show. “Turbo was the result of a major R&amp;D program, in which our engineering team used Design for Six Sigma tools to reinvent the self-contained marine air conditioning unit from the inside out,” said Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Environmental Corporation. “We reduced unit height by up to 17 percent, decreased amperage draw by up to 27 percent and reduced standing water in the condensate drain pan by up to 85 percent.” James Barron, one of the BWI judges, commented, “This is a prime example of a manufacturer that listened to its customer feedback and retooled the product accordingly. The Turbo system has a greater efficiency, faster install time and a higher BTU rating, not to mention it’s quieter to run and dramatically reduces unit vibrations.” Barron is the technical editor and writer for Trailer Boats magazine. Dometic Environmental wins innovation award for new marine air conditioning system

New from Dometic for 2007 is a network gateway unit for Cruisair and Marine Air chilled water air conditioning systems providing a high-speed digital interface with the boat’s monitoring and control network. The gateway unit, with optional graphical touch-screen color display, provides a Modbus/TCP Ethernet interface for two-way data transmission between the HVAC equipment and the central monitoring system. The unit, which can be mounted inside the chiller control panel or remotely mounted, transmits data into the network via an RS232 serial data connection. A built-in Web server allows remote access when an Internet connection is available. “The new gateway unit is part of an ongoing program to upgrade the digital controls for our Cruisair and Marine Air brands,” said Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Environmental Corporation. “We are introducing this new-technology gateway device to make it easy for megayacht builders to interface our high end HVAC systems with their integrated monitoring and alarm systems.”

Dometic introduces new control interface for chilled water air conditioning systems

For boats with wastewater, freshwater, and/or graywater tanks, new Dometic Tank Monitor (DTM) systems let boatowners keep closer track of tank capacity through improved monitoring capabilities. “The new DTM systems apply a multi-level monitoring method to each tank, indicating empty, low, mid and full levels,” explained Jim Kerrigan, Dometic Sanitation, vice president, sales. “This capability, combined with small panel size and intuitive graphics, offers improved functionality and fresh styling to meet the demands of today’s boatowner.” Incorporating three micro-float probe sensors in each tank, a DTM4 system monitors a wastewater tank; the DTM8 system indicates the levels in a wastewater and freshwater tank; and the DTM12 system monitors the condition of wastewater, freshwater, and graywater tanks. The DTM4 wastewater system also can integrate with Dometic’s VacuFlush® toilet technology through a “full tank” shutdown relay option. When the waste holding tank is full, the relay shuts down power to the VacuFlush vacuum generator to prevent more flushes from overfilling the holding tank. The shutdown relay can also be added externally to DTM8 and DTM12 system circuits.
