SYT Synopsis 2022: Major acquisitions, five 100m+ superyachts delivered, and around €6b worth of sales

The design is characterised by her perfect balance between interior and exterior spaces for modern living.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/235907/image/large-e27dfbc2784440996de13c4a6e284367.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/235907">The superyacht Serafina is spread across three decks to maximise the space available on board. She embodies a dynamic and distinctive form while remaining sleek and sophisticated. Her lines are bold and economical, creating a compact, harmonious aesthetic that portrays both strength and elegance.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/235911/image/large-881cac8910eb76d421952d4069435377.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/235911">This sporty looking superyacht concept packs a lot into her compact design. Serafina offers guests a full-width formal lounge with alfresco dining on her bridge deck, while her sundeck is defined by two distinct areas. The forward houses a large pool, while her aft has been designed for lounging and entertaining.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/235914/image/large-e357bd3867f8c7ad526b233ee72eaf9b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/235914">The crew and technical areas of Serafina are isolated towards the bow of the bridge deck to allow for maximum privacy for guests and efficient functioning of crew duties. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3779" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dörries Yachts (Company)">Dörries Yachts</a> has signed a contract for the construction of an all-new 100+ superyacht for an American Tech-Billionaire.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/225314/image/large-76b3ff1d3b79e304f98e23ae3b0977e9.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/225314">The project has been kept tightly underwraps and is shrouded in secrecy at the owner’s request. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3779" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dörries Yachts (Company)">Dörries Yachts</a> has been running as a “shipyard on demand” for some years now, but has recently done away with this arrangement and is currently building two 85-metre sheds in Brehemahaven.The "shipyard on demand" concept was designed to reduce general costs, primarily those incurred from administration and sales. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3779" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dörries Yachts (Company)">Dörries Yachts</a> had an agreement with some of the local facilities that when a contract was signed for a project they could rent a shed for the duration of the project. While the concept promised reduced overheads, it wasn't overly popular which drove them to construct their own facilities.As this newly signed contract exceeds the shipbuilder’s capacity, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3779" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dörries Yachts (Company)">Dörries Yachts</a> has rented out a larger yard, also in Brehemahaven, where it will undertake the construction of this project.The project is scheduled to be delivered in 2025.&nbsp;

KG (Company)">Dörries Yachts</a> have released a new collaborative design concept, the Twins: a 70-metre mothership and her 70-metre support vessel. The mothership, for example, can accommodate the number of guests and facilities that are characteristic of a 100-metre plus superyacht on a 70-metre yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189960/image/large-620716415932c15c5d331f6c637e5647.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189960">The studio acknowledged that it may seem more logical to have one 140-metre yacht in lieu of two 70-metre yachts. However, they note that the 70-metre Twins offer advantages in terms of anchorage, performance, operations, and cost. Larger superyachts are subject to further restrictions and are much more costly in terms of both money and time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189965/image/large-b804bfb27e48df5d311260ecede88e4a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189965">On board the mothership, guests are accommodated across two waterline and four bridge deck staterooms as well as a private owner’s suite with exclusive access to an outdoor deck featuring al fresco dining and a Jacuzzi. A superyacht conversion project, thought to be long forgotten, arrived in Bremerhaven, Germany, this month from the South of England where the vessel became a landmark of the small town of Penzance in its incomplete state.&nbsp;Assigned the job of converting this maritime anomaly and giving the 46-metre project another chance at life is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3779" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dorries Maritime Services GmbH & Co. KG (Company)">Dörries Maritime</a>, the same outfitters behind the two 100-metre plus <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/48786" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulysses vs Andromeda: What's the difference? (2018-07-18 14:30:00 +0200)">Ulysses</a> projects. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/168949/image/large-377a6021d51b4708007f9e104b1e242f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/168949">Life for Vega started in 1964 when she was launched at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3519" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asi-Verken (Company)">Asi Shipyard</a> in Sweden as an ice-breaking vessel that served as a lighthouse supply ship. A Swedish company acquired the decommissioned ship nearly 20 years ago and transported it to the Penzance Dry Dock facility in Cornwall, UK, with the intention of converting this proven ocean cruiser into a luxury explorer yacht.&nbsp;Dutch design office <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/240" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stolk Marimecs BV (Company)">Stolk Marimecs</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ken Freivokh Design (Company)">Ken Freivovk</a> were tasked with the exterior and interior designs respectively, and work got underway by extending the vessel to its current length, fitting its new engines and adding an aluminium superstructure onto the original steel hull. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/168948/image/large-bc08384c683114f32dac995d7f17d83c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/168948">The project’s initial relaunch date was set for some time in 2008, but work was far from complete as the date approached. It soon became clear that Vega’s future was on thin ice due to financial difficulties linked to its owners and work on the project was subsequently halted. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/168947/image/large-38e7b1ee91a0d1896e7db2285bdedeb0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/168947">Over a decade later, in 2019, signs of life were noted when Vega was towed to the nearby <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Shipyard</a> in Falmouth for inspections. Fast-forward another year and Vega’s turbulent past seems to have reached an end in Bremerhaven where work will now begin in the Heise-Shiprepair district where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3779" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dorries Maritime Services GmbH & Co. KG (Company)">Dörries Maritime</a> has rented an independent facility to conduct the work. The exact scope of the works and the duration of the project remains unknown for now.

KG (Company)">Dorriës Maritime</a> in Germany, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4708" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gill Schmid Design (Company)">Gill Schmid Design</a> has been working on a new 80-metre hybrid explorer yacht design that was recently unveiled. With a global range and designed to Ice Class specifications, the New York design firm continues their futuristic, go-anywhere style of superyachts with this latest project. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/101318/image/large-0596b50b1488b152e9dea6d06879ad35.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101318">“The project is designed as a hybrid between a highly functional explorer and a super luxurious white boat,” explain her designers. This distinction is visible in the two-tone paint finish of the vessel with industrial silver used for operational and technical areas while guest spaces are decorated using a pearlescent white. A large part of the exterior is covered in mirrored glazing that allows the yacht to visually adapt to her surroundings as the sky and horizon blend in with the superstructure.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/101315/image/large-137a2287c1639a6a32019f4a76f5412c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/101315">Not only classed as a hybrid on a visual level, but the yacht is also designed to run using a diesel-electric propulsion system, putting new cruising grounds within her reach only accessible to eco-friendly vessels. The high-volume design is the perfect platform to carry the yacht’s various exploration equipment. A fully-enclosed tender bay stores a 12-metre and an 11-metre tender along with the yacht’s Triton submarine and four Sea-Doo jet skis. This concept was developed in conjunction with the New York studio, Gill Schmid Designs and Dörries Yachts of Bremerhaven in northern Germany.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/33764/image/large-daf5d831c834de45ea26f4e62f77acc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33764">The concept takes its name from the Austrian traveller and travel book author, Ida Pfeiffer, one of the first female explorers whose popular books were translated into seven languages and who was a member of geographical societies in both Berlin and Paris.&nbsp;The 70-metre ice class vessel has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and would be driven by diesel electric propulsion that would allow her to cruise in some of the coldest waters on the planet. Paying homage to Pfeiffer's spirit of adventure and exploration, the long-range vessel could cover in-excess of 7000 miles in fully stabilised comfort. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/33765/image/large-8f40955e6ab96798ba8aecba90795439.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33765"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/33766/image/large-39f8ad95473afd944928fc717301e57d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33766">The vessel could also carry a wide array of toys and tenders, including two 14-metre tenders, two rescue boats, one dive support vessel, jetskis and a Triton submarine. In addition, she could also carry an H135 helicopter with hangar, an Icon waterplane and up to two cars in her garage. 70m Ice Class Explorer concept revealed: Project Ida Pfeiffer

The highly anticipated mega explorer yacht U116 that is being completed in Bremerhaven, Germany is getting ready to head out to sea on her first sea trials since arriving here on her maiden voyage from the Kleven shipyard in Norway. The yacht has been spending the past few days laid up in a dry dock at the Bredo shipyard for inspections ahead of U116’s voyage back out to sea.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28590/image/large-eccb760fe2e1eeaf65d7ec624d401ef9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28590">The owner’s previous vessel, named Ulysses, which has since changed hands and is now cruising the Pacific under the name Andromeda, was well known for her functional, naval-like exterior but also the impressive 21-metre catamaran tender that was stowed on the foredeck forward of the bridge. U116 is no different, but this time her owner opted for a more sophisticated and elegant boat that will accompany the yacht on its travels.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28592/image/large-8a3576e7a01869aaf2632bc0e9acefbf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28592">A customised 21-metre Princess 68 motor yacht will fit securely inside U116’s well deck that can be lowered into the water via two massive deck cranes as seen here below with Andromeda's
U-21 motor yacht. The Princess 68 is designed to reach speeds of up to 36 knots and is able to accommodate up to eight guests overnight.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/3189/image/large-2ba7d41623f2c1f86e210534980b5aa4.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/3189">Just one of U116’s many other tenders that will be on board is a custom VanDutch 40 tender which has been painted to match the mothership’s paint scheme.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/28587/image/large-f15dfa837192cdc4714d0e8b2585ba44.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28587">U116 is being outfitted by Dörries Maritime after the vessel was completed on a technical level at Kleven in Ulsteinvik, Norway. Built on a type MT 5006 MKII offshore platform designed by Marin Teknikk, Ulysses’ bold exterior was further developed by New Zealand design office Oscar Mike Naval Architects. The British design studio RWD are behind the design of U116’s interior.
