Any passerby who has the fortune to witness Aquarius in person is immediately charmed by her deep black polished hull and enormously tall masts. Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman has crafted the 56-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="Aquarius56.0m (183'9&quot;)">Aquarius</a> to the highest possible standards and delivered the performance ketch to her new owners earlier this year. With details kept tightly under wraps, little information has been released about the yacht, until now. <img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/51196/image/large-9d5c7f67c60baacba8126df54f1600d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/51196">Born out of a collaboration between Dykstra naval architects, Mark Whiteley Design, and Royal Huisman, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5848" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquarius56.0m (183'9&quot;)">Aquarius</a> was created in response to an owner’s brief which stated that the ketch should be “an elegant, muscular sailing yacht with a classic profile for family enjoyment.”&nbsp; The owners worked closely with Erik Wassem, Senior Designer at Dykstra, who said that the couple were looking for ‘a yacht capable of world cruising’. Experienced sailors themselves, the owners emphasised the term ‘simplicity’,- indicating that the yacht should utilise an already proven technological platform. <img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/51276/image/large-f94e8410a960b2322dddc0632382a61e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/51276">Royal Huisman teamed up with Doyle Sails NZ, Dykstra Naval Architects, Carbo-Link and the shipyard’s sister company Rondal to create the sailing platform onboard. Key components of the rig setup include a mainsail measuring 520 square metres, a carbon fibre Panamax rig, remote and fixed sail control units, a sail inventory which includes roached main and mizzen sails with integrated reefing, a jib, performance and heavy duty staysail and a reacher. Guests are able to step onboard via a three-metre fold-down boarding platform when arriving aboard by tender, or a passerelle when dockside. Superyacht of the Week: Alluring Aquarius 

Though the superyacht business is a relatively small industry, it is packed with international professionals from all walks of life, and it can certainly be easy to get lost in the sea of faces we're presented with at boat shows, yachting events and beyond. In this series of articles, we take a step back from rushed business meetings and hurried networking and sit down with professionals from across the wide spectrum of the superyacht business to learn more about who they are and what they do for the industry. In this week’s episode, we get to know Mike Sanderson, a two time Volvo Ocean Race winner, a veteran of three America's Cup campaigns, and a name familiar to anyone with a penchant for all things sailing. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/26076/image/large-0a6214e7503ee2995fde453b4d813426.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26076">You’ve recently taken over as CEO of Doyle Sails from founder Robbie Doyle - tell us a bit about yourself and why you decided to get into the sail making industry.&nbsp;I left school to become a sailmaker in 1988 so I have been involved in the sailmaking industry all my working life. For me sailmaking as a teenager was the road into professional sailing and, in fact, I still think it’s a great avenue for those who aspire to become a professional sailor.Tell us about your journey to Doyle Sails.I have only been involved in Doyle Sails for the last six years, so for sure I’m still a bit of a newbie in the world of Doyle as some of the people involved have been here since Robbie and Janet Doyle started the company in the early 80s… Over the years the company has had so many milestones, but one of the biggest was when Richard Bouzaid and Chris McMaster launched the STRATIS membrane plant back in 2003. The sailmaking industry has changed so much, from lots of small companies buying the same fabric as the big boys to really being dominated by the big players now who are manufacturing their own ‘bespoke’ sail membranes. For Doyle Sails to have a well-known market-leading product such as Stratis is pivotal to our growth. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/26073/image/large-3d5fd802b40ccc238edb38a3e0661cac.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26073"> 2018 New Zealand Millennium Cup winner Ammonite, featuring Doyle sails A number of the New Zealand builders have shut their doors over the past few years... can the industry in New Zealand ever recover?&nbsp;Yes, New Zealand has lost two of the biggest builders with Alloy Yachts and Fitzroy closing, but we still have very strong players such as Yachting Developments and McMullen &amp; Wing, who are world leaders in their respective markets. New Zealand has also adapted their priorities very quickly from building superyachts to servicing superyachts. Auckland, in particular, is very lucky with the powers that be were switched onto that and built additional berths where required to allow for growth in superyacht service. The Westhaven area, for example, is full of superyachts all the way from Silo Park through to Orams Marina. On top of that, you have Whangarei and Tauranga that are now well set up to cater for the big boats. So even though the new builds have slowed down the whole market is busy from refits which is great.I would be lying if I said that we didn’t miss as many new builds, but like everyone else we have adapted and with sails they don’t last forever so luckily for the sailmakers often people are scheduling their refits in New Zealand about the time their sails need replacing. &nbsp; In our recent interview with Neville Crichton for the Innovation issue of the SuperYacht Times newspaper, he noted that the sailing yacht sector is technically the most innovative in yachting. What do you see as some of the most important innovations in sailing over the past 10 years?For me that’s easy, it has to be how we deal with foils and foiling and which will also affect the superyacht world. There’s already a superyacht in production with a “DSS” system, so a foil to generate Dynamic Stability…so stability from speed. Then there’s the big 100ft Tri’s already launched who are looking to foil around the world non-stop…I have no doubt this will be a big part of sailing’s evolution over the next ten years. What's next for Doyle Sails?&nbsp;Our industry demands that innovation is constant, and we already have sails and concepts out there in the real-life test lab always looking for better, faster, but durable and long lasting ways of building sails. The last 12 months we have seen the launch of our ‘Cable-less Code 0’ which really has taken off as the only way to do a Code Zero in 2018, but we still have an awful lot more that we can do with that technology. Not only for the Code Zero but the whole inventory.

Recently lowered into the water for the first time after having been <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="56m sailing yacht Aquarius leaves Royal Huisman onto launch phase (2017-11-02 16:33:00 +0100)">transported</a> from Royal Huisman’s shipyard in Vollenhove was the Dutch yacht builder’s new 56-metre classic ketch project christened as Aquarius. In Pictures: new 56m sailing yacht Aquarius launched

With the shipyard construction and test phases now complete, Royal Huisman moved its new 56-metre ketch-rigged sailing yacht Aquarius from the shipyard in Vollenhove to deeper waters where she will soon be christened and launched.<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FRoyalHuisman%2Fvideos%2F1506128882798056%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560" width="720" height="399" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe>For this project Royal Huisman once again worked with Dykstra Naval Architects and interior designer Mark Whiteley. Her two carbon masts are built by Rondal with Doyle Sails New Zealand supplying the sails.Project Manager Godfrey Cray oversaw the build project and conveyed a message on behalf of the owner to the build team, shipyard management and friends who attended the farewell ceremony: “I chose to build my boat at Royal Huisman because of the quality of your work, your attention to detail and the pride that all of you have in what you do.”&nbsp;Stay tuned for more as we follow the project’s progress.

56m sailing yacht Aquarius leaves Royal Huisman onto launch phase

Recently moved into Royal Huisman’s paint shed for its final stage of construction, the 56-metre classic sailing ketch project 399 is on-track for launch later this year. The yacht was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects for long-range cruising while hosting extended family on board.<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7AOHQu_fVU0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>Performance was another focal point for the project team as the yacht is expected to take part in certain regattas during her travels. The interior of the project is designed by Mark Whitely with Rondal and Doyle Sails NZ in charge of delivering the mast and sails respectively.&nbsp;

Kokomo in Beaulieu sur Mer, France

Kokomo was launched in 2010 by Alloy Yachts in New Zealand, to a design by Dubois Naval Architects, with an interior by RWD. The 58-metre yacht sleeps 12 guests in five cabins. Kokomo is the largest sailing yacht to have been built by the New Zealand shipyard and was commissioned by a repeat Alloy client. Her carbon fibre Southern Spars mast towers an impressive 74.3 metres above the waterline which carries one of the largest single sails ever produced by Doyle Sails in New Zealand – a 2,227 square metre Gennaker.

It’s easy to imagine that the sailing yacht market has always accounted for a relatively small number of the global superyacht fleet, but just a few decades ago in 1940, sailing yachts actually comprised 49% of the total fleet. Today, that percentage has dropped dramatically, coming in at only 16%.

With the exponential development of new technologies and engineering, it’s unsurprising that these original figures have decreased as motor yachts became increasingly sophisticated and transformed into the refined superyachts dominating the ports of Cannes and Monaco today. What is perhaps surprising is just how much of a hit the sailing market has taken over the years.

 

The reasons for this are multifaceted; from the rise in clients from Russia and eastern Europe who are not traditionally interested in sailing yachts; client driven innovation leading to limited innovation from shipyards and designers; less investors interested in the sailing yacht market, especially after the Financial Crisis; limitations to the development of standardisation within the market; and a very small number of new sailing yacht designers entering the industry - to name but a few.

 

Amongst the many consequences of these dwindling numbers of new sailing superyachts is that innovation has all but ground to a halt. This is problematic, as innovation could certainly lead to a substantial boost to the sector. Here we ask some of the most important names in sailing their thoughts on improving the sailing yacht market for everybody.

What is the single biggest stumbling block for innovation within the sailing yacht industry?

Germán Frers -  In my opinion the biggest stumbling block for innovation is a combination of tradition, routine, lack of interest on the part of the parties normally involved in developing new projects, cost, and possible risks. It is the responsibility of the creative group to present all innovations with well proven documentation of potential practical and aesthetic consequences to builders, owners, and project managers.

 

Malcolm McKeon - I don’t feel there is one single biggest stumbling block; performance has become more of a priority with sailing superyachts, and as a result they have become increasingly more complicated in recent years with hi-tech sail plans and sailing systems. This has caused the building and running costs to increase significantly.

 

Ron Holland - The yachting industry's tendency to overvalue tradition. For example, if a builder has been successful building steel yachts, there is an understandable preference to not pioneer aluminium or composite construction systems.

Many of the world’s sailing yacht designers have been established for a number of years, with the number of new sailing yacht designers limited. How can the industry encourage more designers to come to the fore?

Philippe Briand - The market for sailing yachts is at a very low point at this time… Designers tend to go where there are owners that purchase boats!

 

Matt Bridge, Doyle Sails - Owners, whilst willing to take some risks with progressive designs that feature high performance sailing features and modern, sometimes polarising, aesthetics, are less willing to do so with untried designers. In their defence, the stalwarts of the design industry are very talented so it’s hard for a new player to make an impression in what is a relatively small market. I also think the industry needs to do far more to encourage women into its ranks. In this day and age, it’s an anachronism that I can’t think of a single female sailing yacht designer.

 

Stéphane Levee, Perini Navi - Historically, designers cut their teeth and made a name for themselves on the racing circuit. Unfortunately, due to the preponderance of one-design racing and a professionalisation of elite sailing, very few new designers have been able to build a high-profile international reputation. This leaves them at a disadvantage when competing against established firms. This state of affair is compounded by the current sluggishness of the market where well established firms are competing hard for the few active owners.

 

To kickstart interest and innovation in the sailing yacht market, do you think the creation of a new semi-custom platform or class in the 35 to 60 metre range could work, offering a level of standardisation?

Malcolm McKeon - I think Perini have done this very successfully over many years, however I believe clients spending a large amount of money on a sailing yacht are looking for total customisation. Sailing yacht owners are generally very passionate about the product and are looking for individuality.

 

Matt Bridge, Doyle Sails - Southern Wind Shipyard have had phenomenal success with their range of 100’ models, as have Nautor with their new Swan 115 line, (they sold four before the first one even hit the water) so there is clearly a market for this concept. Having said that, for every owner who finds this appealing there is one who wants a fully custom offering and even those who do opt for a more standardised platform are rarely content with the base package and often upgrade where they can. I think the yards who are catering to this part of the market are probably already fulfilling the demand.

What do you see as the most important innovations in the sailing yacht market over the last 10 years, and what do you envision being introduced in the foreseeable future?

Stéphane Levee, Perini Navi - The two key areas specific to superyacht sailing that have seen the most development are sail handling and keel solutions. We are now capable of pushing the boats harder and faster whilst improving the safety on board and reducing failures. Sail furling has improved dramatically, including the capacity to furl spinnakers. Captive winches and furlers are stronger, faster, and quieter. 
	 
	Whilst there are still improvements on sail handling to come, we as an industry should be mindful of the escalation in price and should be looking for solutions to propose more efficient and economic yachts. Whilst this doesn't sound exciting, it is paramount to the survival of our industry. The racing yacht market has been, at times, a good cautionary tale of what not to do.

 

Philippe Briand - I see the future in hydrofoils technology. The primary underlying issue with the development of this was the shape, which needs to be strong enough to support tremendous dynamic forces and light enough to avoid penalising the performance. The new America's Cup catamarans performed an impressive show of what can now be done. Such technologies simplify many issues and open new horizons.

The official entry to the New Zealand Millenium Cup opened on the 8th August. A number of yachts have already set course for the South Pacific, with at least seven vessels already waiting to sign up.
