Following an intensive refit in the Netherlands, the 32.89 meter classic Feadship Santa Maria has emerged from the building shed last week in Zaandam, to reveal a beautifully restored icon, ready for the summer cruising season in the western Mediterranean. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155228/image/large-8d309b4388009e8a95496f73cc553439.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155228"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155229/image/large-f172841af04dfec70e51ed2e10e690e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155229">Advanced modifications were made to her steel hull, including a new remoddled bow-stem area around the anchor pockets, as well as the installation of Zero Speed Stabilisers. Feadship superyacht Santa Maria re-launched

I visited the yacht and her owner today, and was updated on her progress.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151958/image/large-c031f89780e50c73f2744b26956ef3ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151958">The area around her anchor pockets needed attention, and it was decided that the best way was to replace an entire section of the bow. With a new bow currently being built at the Feadship yard in Makkum, Santa Maria’s old bow was removed today.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151959/image/large-46568cbeff219403e4be1ce85130b65f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151959"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151960/image/large-ac96e6f28b1a5fcc7b4394cd2447510c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151960"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151961/image/large-83c023d2cb3e1c875942c8f0f17ae379.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151961">We can also confirm that most of the interior has been stripped and is read to be reinstalled, complete with new bathrooms, flooring and electrical wiring. Even though her bathrooms are being replaced, the owner decided to re-use some of the old bathroom fixtures, keeping a classic yacht charm.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151962/image/large-0ca730de8ebe71dc4cd6ecc491eba1a8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151962">Other work still be completed within the extensive refit is the installation of Zero Speed Stabilisers. Most of the connections between the steel hull and the aluminium superstructure have been replaced in recent weeks, as well as the steelwork underneath the wooden caprails.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151963/image/large-8acbd159f6deecd707fe6933fb57def4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151963">With completion due in April 2015 - just in time for the start of the summer season where she will cruise the western Mediterranean - Santa Maria’s refit is well on track.Her owner says, "We decided to make the refit as thorough as possible. Until now we have been stripping her and we have now reached the point where we can start putting her back together, which is a great feeling."SuperYacht Times will be following the refit of this classic Feadship, which is managed by Dutch Maritime Partners, closely over the next few months.

Update on the refit of Santa Maria

Text and refit photos by Maarten JanssenFollowing the recent arrival of the 32.89 metre classic Feadship Santa Maria (ex. Sea Star II; R.M. Eagle; Bystander), back to the Netherlands, SuperYacht Times’ Maarten Janssen visited the project with her owner, who spoke openly about the future plans for his classic superyacht.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151172/image/large-a8f4f487e1dcbf52fc6353d9d69151c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/149493">Her owner purchased the 1963 yacht around six years ago, in 2008. When bought, she was in great condition for a boat of 47 years of age with plenty of history on the water, a state that came down to a lifetime of caring owners. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151173/image/large-91a59c3a919ed29d911013caebe68968.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151173">She started life as a vessel commissioned for the renowned car mogul Henry Ford II. Although Ford attempted to keep the yacht somewhat shrouded in secrecy, the secret inevitably got out, and the buzz surrounding Santa Maria was insatiable at the time. She was the most expensive Feadship yacht to be built by the shipyard in the early 60s, as well as the first keel to be laid in the new Van Lent construction shed. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151174/image/large-8ba65261511c21e064dc416478c0febd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151174">Her interior was unique at the time, with Ford requesting an ‘old chateau’ feel, and interior designer Jacques Frank was commissioned to produce the weather beaten effect desired. She accommodates 10 guests over four luxurious staterooms and a spacious master suite. She also accommodates up to five crew.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151175/image/large-4051d84cdf0d8730dae7808ecefeb46b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151175">Even though Santa Maria is still a very solid yacht, time came to replace some of her systems, and to perform some repairs. Interestingly, her hull is still in great condition. Tests were carried out to determine the thickness of the steel, and her hull was found to be in excellent condition, a true testament to Feadship's quality of construction.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151176/image/large-da83ba4d4aa3c86a080629fa366b6b70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151176">The area around her anchor pockets however, needed attention, and some changes and updates in the engine room were long overdue. "We already made some changes to the electrical switchboards a couple of years ago, but time has come to really update all of those systems. As a former US owned yacht, she was built for 110V. We are changing all of that now to 220V".<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151177/image/large-1c35fa37bf8cfee3d1fde05d04f236f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151177"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151178/image/large-8d8e99ce0f35bc9976883a747db51414.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151178">Her interior will also be updated, keeping however those lovely time period details, such as bathroom fittings, and the original tiles in the pantry. During my visit of the yacht, layout changes were still very much on the table, such as the transformation of the captain's cabin on the main deck, into a multi-purpose cabin. The original dining room, located fore on the main deck, might also be turned into an extra cabin, although this would requite a substantial modification of the main deck pantry, adding time, and cost to the refit.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151179/image/large-88863a2118a5cdd32e49a641a5be79b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151179">Santa Maria's owner takes it all, in a typical Dutch down to earth approach. "You have to draw the line somewhere", he smiles. "If you don't draw the line, there's no telling where it will end".<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/151180/image/large-a871ce74ff40a9242e4ec9f6e65478f8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151180">The refit, which is carried out under the supervision of the Feadship Refit team, is estimated to take around eight months in total, with completion in time for the summer 2015 charter season. With the refit taking place in Holland, her owner might take Santa Maria up North for her inaugural Scandinavian summer cruise. Central agents Camper &amp; Nicholsons International and Merle Wood &amp; Associates have today announced the sale of the 62.50 metre superyacht Icon.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/147384/image/large-e78b2a46eb4ea3cc9d00b79c8a96874f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137758">Delivered in 2010, the Dutch built superyacht was designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon with an interior Studio Linse. Superyacht Icon sold

Recently Dutch yacht industry veterans Duncan Schaaf and Arne Feenstra of the Amsterdam based management company Dutch Maritime Partners (DMP) announced that they had been awarded the contract to manage the 62-metre superyacht Icon. 62 Metre superyacht Icon now under DMP management

Within the new company, which will operate fully independently, the team will use their expertise to efficiently manage large sailing and motor yachts. The team of Dutch Maritime Partners will visit the Monaco Yacht Show next week, where they are available for meetings. Duncan says, “being the number one superyacht show, Monaco is a fantastic event to launch our new company. With several on-going negotiations for the management of large yachts, we are confident that there is a need for fully independent management companies”. In addition to managing motor and sailing yachts, the company also offers project and refit management and is regularly consulted by yacht owners and brokers to survey yachts.
