He pursued a Merchant Navy cadetship, earned his Master’s Unlimited license, and brings decades of experience from both commercial offshore work and the superyacht world. At the core of his philosophy is respect: “My father always said, ‘treat people how you’d want to be treated,’ and I carry that with me every day. The crew will give 120 percent, working to their legal limits to make sure guests have the most incredible experience, and they deserve respect for that.”“We’ve built a solid team – there was some turnover at first, but now it’s zero. That’s what we’ve been doing for almost a year now. We had a really successful season last year with this crew, and they’ve all stayed on through the winter,” he added. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6033" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Polestar70.16m (230'2&quot;)Rossinavi2021">Polestar</a> hasn’t yet begun formal charter operations, preparations are meticulous. The dynamic 17-strong crew undergo intensive training and service drills twice weekly.&nbsp;As John explained: “The longer people stay with us, the more intellectual property they build – the deeper their understanding of how the boat operates and flows.” From an operational perspective, “with solid systems and continuity in place, we’re able to deliver near-perfect service,” assures John. With provisioning chains, documentation, and all certifications in perfect order, the team is determined to deliver seamless service from the outset.Beyond operations, the emphasis is on cultivating the right onboard atmosphere – what Captain John calls “the magic.” He explained, “You can have the most incredible yacht, but if the vibe and energy from the crew aren’t right, you’ll never achieve that five-star experience.” Building strong team spirit and shifting the mindset from private operations to charter-focused hospitality has been a priority. From perfecting multi-table dinner setups to detailed guest preference profiling – even down to how each guest takes their coffee – every measure is being taken to ensure guests feel cared for without needing to ask. “The only way to really know if we’re ready is by doing it,” John added, calling these live service rehearsals “charter trials” – a final step before the real thing begins.Diverse and dynamic crew“I’m a firm believer in having a mixed-nationality crew,” stated John, who believes diversity fosters collaboration and prevents cliques. Right now, we’ve got a great mix that brings a great culture and energy.” From a guest perspective, it also creates “brilliant ice-breaking moments,” he noted.
