The youngest of six children in a Belgian family, he developed an early taste for independence and adventure. After completing his military service, he pursued a career in logistics, founding a trucking company at the age of 23 that he would eventually grow into a network employing 350 people across seven locations. Alongside his business career, Verstraete pursued a wide range of demanding pursuits, from motorcycle and GT racing to long-distance sailing, including a solo Atlantic crossing aboard a 56-foot yacht.In 2019, he sold the logistics company and shifted his focus towards world cruising with his family. Together with his wife Lydivine and their children, he embarked on an extended voyage that took them across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and onwards to destinations including Tahiti, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, Alaska and Canada.During these travels, the family lived aboard full time while homeschooling their children, but their education also extended ashore. The children attended local schools in Tahiti, New Zealand, Bali, a Japanese public school and in British Columbia, Canada.
