New to the market: Sailing yacht Surama for sale! She is a 41m Royal Huisman yacht built in 1997.

After nearly two decades of designing custom sailing yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/70" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fontaine Design Group (Company)">Fontaine Design Group</a> has revealed details about its latest project in the works: a 41-metre classic, world-cruising ketch concept.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/76718/image/large-5192ae265a1dc064e39ff3243ff8d0c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/76718">Created with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4404" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Whiteley Design (Company)">Mark Whiteley Design</a>, who was involved in the construction of the potential client’s current yacht, the lifting keel ketch concept promises to be timeless. Her traditional design elements combine the functionality of a classic sailing yacht with the innovative features of a more modern vessel. This includes features to minimise hull drag, with a flush retractable bow, stern thrusters and flush retractable propulsion systems. The designer commented: “The retractable propulsion systems of today are developing to a point where these systems should be considered a normal installation in five years’ time.”&nbsp; The light displacement hull form will also be outfitted with a lifting bulb keel with trim tab and twin rudders.Another noteworthy feature of this vessel will be the adjustable hydraulically-activated dinghy lift and storage system. The entire aft deck will be able to move up and aft into the water to accept and launch the custom design 6.4-metre tender. Once the tender is launched, the platform can be used for easy access to and from the water.

The 33m superyacht Marae has been sold, with Denison Yachting introducing the buyer and Burgess representing the seller. 

Sold: the 33m Alloy superyacht Marae

The 28.04-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4008" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cabochon28.04m (91'12&quot;)">Cabochon</a> has been sold, Northrop &amp; Johnson has today announced. Built by the Taiwanese shipyard Ta Chiao Bros. Yacht Building Co. in 2004, she was designed in her entirety by Ted Fontaine and underwent a significant refit in 2015.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/36178/image/large-4830305ef2ff16a76c952a02289cd58b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/36178">Cabochon was built for an experienced owner with an engineering background, two attributes that ensured the yacht had a shoal draft, reliable upwind performance and comfort at sea. She accommodates up to six guests across three en-suite staterooms and can be sailed by a team of just two.&nbsp;Cabochon was sold with Northrop &amp; Johnson’s Brian Commette representing the seller in collaboration with Chet Hartshorn of Wellington Yacht Partners. Dolf Haffenoffer at Churchill Yacht Partners introduced the buyer in the deal. At the time of sale, she was listed at an asking price of $2,300,000.&nbsp;

The 28m Taiwanese sailing yacht Cabochon sold 

Burgess has announced that the 29.9-metre sailing yacht Windcrest has been sold in an in-house deal. With their Miami and New York offices representing both the buyer and seller, Burgess have secured the sale within just five months of the yacht coming on to the sales market.

Built in 2006, Windcrest is the product of a collaboration between Fontaine Design Group and Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay Maine. The elegant sailing yacht accommodates up to eight guests across three cabins, including a master suite and two twin rooms. The vessel also accommodates up to four members of crew.

With a 300hp Lugger engine and three large sails, the yacht has a top speed of 11 knots, with a cruising speed of around 9 knots. Windcrest marks the 11th sailing yacht Burgess has sold in the last 18 months, with an average length of 40.13-metres. At the time of sale, Windcrest was listed at an asking price of $5,450,000.

What is on offer?

Built by the New Zealand shipyard Alloy Yachts in 2004, the 32.97 metre sloop Marae was designed in her entirety by Ted Fontaine of the Fontaine Design Group. Undergoing two extensive refits in 2009 and 2014, she is presented in excellent condition.

Marae will be available for charter during the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup - both during the Cup Qualifiers and Challenger Playoffs held from 26th May to 12th June, as well as in the Match Finals from 17th to 18th June and 24th to 27th June.

Charter deal of the week: the 33m sloop Marae at the America's Cup

We spoke to Mary and Mark Shores - owners of the 32.97 metre sloop Marae - recently all about sailing, ownership and the beauty of chartering.

When did your love affair with sailing begin?

Both my husband and I grew up on the East Coast of the U.S. around Chesapeake Bay. Being on and around the water has been part of our lifestyle from our youngest days, and even today, it’s where we enjoy relaxing with our family and friends the most. We have been married for over 37 years and sailing together since we were young.

What yachts did you previously own before Marae?

We started sailing on an 11’ dinghy and gradually moved up in size as time allowed with our growing family. Before Marae, we owned a Little Harbor 60 named Destiny. This was our first experience with a Ted Hood/Ted Fontaine design which we loved and why we selected Marae, which is a similar but updated design. It also was an Alloy built yacht which assured us on the quality of the engineering and construction.

Did you look at many yachts before you purchased Marae?

Our family was growing and we wanted to move up in size to provide a comfortable place for our children and future grandchildren to come to be on the water.  We wanted a yacht that was truly a sailboat from a performance standpoint and also one that could still get into those quiet snug coves for those unique, secluded nights. We looked at a number of sailing yachts over a several year period before deciding on Marae. When we saw her the first time, we were so struck by her beauty that it left us speechless.

Marae is offered for charter - was this always the plan?

When you buy a yacht of this size, you are running a small business. Chartering is the best approach to achieve our goal to maintain Marae to the highest standards. Marae is also U.S. Flagged which greatly simplifies the chartering contract process for guests and brokers.

While we do of course have a beautiful yacht to charter, it is our world class crew that really brings the magic to life for our charter clients. Captain Frank Ficken, his wife Sue, our chef, Dylan Rowe Clark, our engineer and Maggie Fowler, our stew, are world class.

Where will she be cruising in the next couple of years?

Marae has been in a routine of being in the Caribbean for the winter - from Grenada to the Virgin Islands - and New England for the summer, so the Newport, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard areas, plus there has been a lot of interest for charter clients to use her in Maine. Her unique design also allows her to be used across the Bahamas and the Chesapeake as she moves North and South. One special event we are planning is for Marae to be in Bermuda for the America's Cup in 2017.

With the market saturated with yachts available for charter, how do you make Marae stand out?

Anyone that has been aboard immediately recognises that Marae is a special sailing yacht… unique features include the numerous entertaining spaces. The best experience that is hardest to communicate in writing is when you have her 200 tons at full sail cutting through the crystal blue seas.

Our focus is to try to relay that experience to charter brokers and their clients. We start with a custom website <a href="http://symarae.com/" target="_blank">symarae.com</a> that does a good job of communicating the unique features of Marae including the crew and we also participate in a number of charter shows. 

You’ve owned Marae for a number of years… Would you consider building a new sailing yacht?

We are passionate about yachting and being on the water so we are always keeping an eye on both new builds and resales that come on the market, though Marae is hard to improve on for how we use her!
