Together they have provided a fully integrated and optimized rig package where the entire sail and rig plan work cohesively.To supplement the sail and rig system, a new load sensing and analysis system developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Future Fibres S.L.U (Company)">Future Fibres</a> will be present on board the new supermaxi. This technology will enable the owner and his crew to monitor exact loads in the rig and rigging and push the yacht to its maximum sailing performance while keeping it safe. Designed for Grand Prix racing and performance yachts, AEROsix has also been engineered so that any existing superyacht rigging packages can be retrofitted to accommodate the rigging.&nbsp;Following the product’s successful launch in late-2019, SuperYacht Times takes a closer look at what exactly makes this new aerodynamic rigging technology such a breakthrough product.&nbsp;&nbsp;<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hs7QclssZj8?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe>PerformanceA key aspect of the AEROsix rigging technology is its superior performance capability. Designed with an extended ellipse shape with a 2.7:1 ratio, AEROsix generates the highest amount of lift for the least amount of frontal drag. It therefore achieves the highest performance in comparison to other available carbon rigging products. For example, those competing in a typical-length day race at a superyacht regatta could gain a 19-second advantage, whilst competing in a typical offshore race (i.e. RORC 600) could gain up to 12 minutes during a two-day race. With some superyacht regattas being won by a margin of just 10 seconds, this kind of advantage is indispensable, and can be the difference between winning and losing. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/108095/image/large-fb09db17142cd54742a16a0455bda052.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/108095">R&amp;D manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Future Fibres S.L.U (Company)">Future Fibres</a>, Jonathan Duval, explains: “One of the concerns about an elliptical shape is that people think it presents a wide profile to the wind on the windward side of the boat. However, a great amount of drag is coming from the leeward side too. The air is accelerated through the slot by at least 50%, so despite the angle of airflow being narrower, this increased airspeed means that the drag generated on the leeward side shouldn’t be disregarded.”“The extended ellipse shape of AEROsix leads to minimum drag in high speed and low wind angle leeward side, while the rough surface provides exceptional aerodynamic performance for the range of angles of airflow on the windward side,” he adds.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/11798/image/large-0331101eab58e885948cbdb6bb51194e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11798">Vibration and Drag ReductionBuilding on the same low vibration principles found in the precursory ECsix, the multi-strand carbon rods drastically stops the vibration produced by the rigging 60% faster than a comparable solid carbon rod. Besides its inherent dampening properties, the lowered resonance effect will benefit the performance of the yacht thanks to the reduced aerodynamic drag.Commenting on the decision to use AEROsix rigging technology onboard the ClubSwan 125, yacht designer Juan Kouyoumdjian says: “The potential benefits of reduction in vibration were very interesting as the drag related to vibration is as important as anything you can do with the aerodynamic alignment of the rigging, not to mention the added comfort factor from the lack of noise.”Duval adds: “We have proven that not only does a rough or braided surface have both a significant effect in dissipating any vibration, but it also helps with the flow. If you think about a golf ball, the surface isn’t smooth but has those multiple dimples. Vortex shedding is reduced at the trailing edge of the ellipse as a result of keeping a laminar flow attached on the surface of the cable due to the roughness of the braid cover. This cannot be achieved with, for example, solid rigging where the surface finish is smooth.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/59218/image/large-a941d05b3f7daca8a1df6b99eecb5312.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/59218">Owner's representative, Gregory Monks is leading <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/project-mm597-with-southern-spars" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">the 59.7-metre Royal Huisman Project MM597</a> and has first-hand experience on how these innovations succeed: “For superyacht captains and anyone who knows the industry, you don't want resonance going through the boat, you don't want owners to be upset by having noisy rigging. It’s an important comfort and performance factor, to be able to get rid of those vibration and resonance issues.”“We’ve sailed around the world, on occasion in very severe conditions and we’ve found ECsix to be superb in terms of reliability and performance. From the service side, we were in New Zealand when we did our five- year service period and packaging it up, sending it away and having it serviced in Spain by the OEM was easy. That ease of transportation is important to us and it’s one of the appealing factors of AEROsix,”&nbsp;he adds.<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2JMOogDHGjI?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Reliability&nbsp;Aside from enhancing the yacht’s performance and comfort, AEROsix’s multi-strand rods and carbon plates are designed to absorb energy during impact, meaning that any force does not migrate through the entire cable. The patented technology used for AEROsix can sustain up to 25% of damage and still work effectively and due to the flexibility of multi-strand cables, the cable is not at risk of any compression failure. In addition, as each rod has a specific working and breaking load, AEROsix can be customised to meet the individual demands of any yacht.&nbsp;Duval explains: “To achieve this robustness, we developed a special resin and placed special carbon reinforcements in the required places. The key thing is that each plate goes from the top of each diagonal to the bottom of the cable, so there are no plate joins along the cable.”&nbsp;“When we manufacture the cables, we ensure that the strain on every single element of the rigging is the same. Perini Navi has completed the mast stepping operation of Perseus 3. The sloop has been equipped with one of the tallest masts in the world, measuring 75.8 metres, weighing 16.4 tons. Destined for the 60 metre sloop C.2218, as she is currently known, the 75.8 metre mast was built and shipped in two sections and will be joined over the next six weeks in the Perini yard. The accompanying Future Fibres furling boom and bespoke composite rigging package will be shipped later this month, with dressing and stepping of the rig due to take place in November.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/145808/image/large-70517e81b66eae123b37ec88b556d3a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/145808">The brief for project C.2218 focused on achieving the highest levels of performance and meant Future Fibres was able to utilise its extensive Grand Prix experience, incorporating many of the developments identified through its racing clients. However, with Future Fibres’ trade mark, milled aluminium, tooling they have managed to produce a tube with a perfect exterior surface and a flawless Clearcote, gloss carbon finish. The result not only looks impressive but with zero filler – which can add up to 3 per cent to the weight of a mast – further reduces unnecessary weight to deliver a mast with both performance and style.Utilising Future Fibres’ 40 metre dedicated clean-room/oven meant the 23.4 metre furling boom could be manufactured using pre-preg carbon, rather than standard wet-laminate, improving structural performance and again, reducing weight. The boom has been through a detailed design and development process with special attention on the complex systems required for sail furling and handling. Future Fibres has announced the appointment of Hugues Jacquemin as its new chief executive officer, following the retirement of outgoing CEO, Ewan McLellan. Jacquemin served most recently as CEO of 3B The Fibreglass Company, where he maintained his reputation for driving growth, following the company’s LBO from former parent, Owens Corning. Future Fibres appoints new CEO

Future Fibres has announced the recent signing of two 60 metre superyacht contracts with prominent Italian superyacht builder Perini Navi. When Perini Navi, one of the most experienced superyacht builders in the world, chose to partner with Future Fibres, the message to the industry was clear: trust Perini Navi – trust Future Fibres. The contract won earlier this year for two spectacular 60 metre sailing yachts confirms the arrival of the Future Fibres spar division on the superyacht scene. Both luxury yachts, one a sloop and the other a ketch, come from a new generation of 60m sailing yachts sold by Perini Navi. For the sloop, Future Fibres will be supplying a full mast, furling boom and rigging package which will be completed by 2014. The mast tube will measure a massive 72.2m and the boat will become one of an elite few yachts that cannot transit the Panama Canal due to rig height. The client's desire for performance will see the sloop's rig built with race-bred features throughout: locking mechanisms on halyards to reduce mast compression and save weight, a stowable staysail system, high modulus fibre for a lighter stiffer mast and an innovative batten slide solution to increase sail life. The clear finish carbon mast will leave nothing to hide – show-casing precision tooling and the build accuracy of the product. The sloop will also have a Future Fibres female moulded carbon pre-preg boom with electronic furling motors. The new furling system will be fully tunable, using state-of-the-art software and torque feedback to optimise furling performance. Once complete, the boom will have an overall length of 22.2m. This project comes off the back of a series of massive 25m+ furling booms currently in production, and will put Future Fibres behind the four biggest furling booms ever built. A set of Future Fibres solid carbon rigging will complete the fully optimised mast and rigging package. For the ketch, Future Fibres has already started building almost a kilometre of TSC solid carbon rigging. The V1 for the main mast will have an impressive -750 equivalent cable (the 46m sloop Pink Gin has a -540 equivalent V1 span). The signing of the two 60 metre projects follows a comprehensive discussion and negotiation process. Vitters latest sailing yacht Marie christened

Composite rigging specialist Future Fibres has teamed up with leading mould specialist Persico Spa to design and build carbon masts for high-end customers in the grand prix race and superyacht markets. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131717/image/large-2f3825edd7b040b189944ee0c1631306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131717">The new venture, Future Spars, opens its doors for business this July in a new factory next door to Future Fibres’ rigging facility in Valencia. It will include a 50m autoclave. Founder of Future Fibres, Tom Hutchinson, explained the plans for the new venture. “At Future Fibres we have built a strong reputation for producing the lightest, strongest, most proven and reliable composite rigging in the market, and now we plan to bring that same scientific, evidence-based approach to the design and construction of masts for customers at the top end of the market.” Future Fibres is going into the new venture with Bergamo-based mould specialist Persico, with over 40 years of experience in moulds, composites and engineering from the aerospace, automotive and marine sectors. CEO of Future Fibres, Ewan McLellan, believes Persico is the perfect partner for this new business. “We wanted a technical partner who could bring in new ideas from outside of the marine industry, and Persico brings a wealth of experience from the automotive and aerospace world. “I think the marine industry can learn a lot from other sectors, and it’s that wider perspective that we’re looking to bring to Future Spars. Moulds are one of the biggest costs and yet biggest quality and design constraints in mast making. With Persico´s deep understanding of what’s required from their moulds, resulting from their co-design approach in automotive and aerospace, it means that they have a lot of composite experience to bring to Future Spars.” Pierino Persico, the founder and managing director of Persico, became fascinated with the grand prix racing scene when Luna Rossa commissioned the company to construct its two Version 5 yachts for the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia 2007. “Pierino enjoyed the Luna Rossa project a lot. He has a passion for design and innovation, and that’s going to be an important part of the Future Spars business.” said Hutchinson. From Persico´s perspective, Future Fibres provides the grand prix race pedigree they were looking for to develop their marine division. Marcello Persico, Persico´s Business Development Director, explains: “Future Fibres have already proven they have the knowledge, technical skills, drive and determination to shape a market.
