From class-approved propellers to fully printed hulls, 3D printing is on the rise. We take a look at the opportunities for yachtbuilders and ask whether the industry is more confined by mindset than technology.From model-making to printing food or even replacement organs, it seems there is nothing 3D printing cannot do. The use of additive manufacturing, as it is also known, is already viable across a range of industries for the production of plastic, metal and ceramic elements. And earlier this year we learned of 88-metre Pegasus, a concept by designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jozeph Forakis (Company)">Jozeph Forakis</a> touted as “the world’s first 3D printed superyacht”. But is this emerging technology the miracle solution that will enable us to print entire boats in a matter of days?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295550/image/large-2e977725d308de0c51d4f283798ac61c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295550">“When we started out, we looked at how we could introduce this technology in a field where everything is strictly artisanal,” says Paolo Nazzaro, co-founder and MD of Superfici, an Italian additive manufacturer based in La Spezia.“ The shipyards reacted like it was arcane magic, and it took time to prove to them that we could use new technology to improve design and functionality.”With clients ranging from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sacs Marine (Company)">SACS</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heinen & Hopman (Company)">Heinen &amp; Hopman</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raymarine UK Ltd (Company)">Raymarine</a> to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, Amer, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a> and even Lamborghini, the message is starting to get through, although the challenge now is convincing shipyards to change the way they approach design. Nazzaro points to a tender helm console Superfici designed and printed for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sacs Marine (Company)">SACS</a>, which was an exercise to show that when you change the way you build parts you also change the way you design them.&nbsp;“Now they understand,” he says. “We design not only the exterior but also the internal parts because we print everything as one; it means parts are becoming more complex even though they are actually easier to build, and shipyards are starting to change the way they conceive projects.”“It’s a different mindset,” agrees Adam Wheeler, Design Office Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker International</a>. “Rather than just designing for manufacture, we can design for form now. The beauty of 3D printing is it lends itself to free thinking. There are no limitations.”&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> has started using 3D printing across its range and has set up an internal programme known as RAMP (Research into Additive Manufacturing Processes). Currently its 60-strong design office uses 3D printing primarily for components in non-visible areas, but the tech allows the team to create complex pieces that are not possible to manufacture by conventional injection moulding, such as parts for plumbing or air-conditioning ducts that can maximise available volume, or elements like plenum boxes and manifolds that by printing them whole mitigates the risk of leaks through human error.&nbsp;“We can develop and realise organic shapes that subtractive manufacturing doesn’t allow us to do,” Wheeler confirms. “It’s definitely the future and we’ve got high aspirations as to how we utilise additive manufacturing going forward, although the print resolution isn’t quite there yet to print a major moulding without having to revisit it with paint or other finishing.”For Will Penfold, Senior Project Manager at 3D printing company AMufacture in the UK, designers and shipyards are still playing catch-up with the technology. “A lot of the time parts come to us that have been designed for injection moulding or machining and are not designed with 3D printers in mind,” he says. “We then advise how they can tweak the design and add value or features, because we can print parts that can’t be made in any other way.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295551/image/large-73b02ba3b3b53862aafcc41a6b980e6d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295551">AMufacture prints custom components for high-end race boats, and low-volume production parts for sailboats, motoryachts and luxury tenders. A supplier to companies like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Harken Inc. (Company)">Harken</a>, it announced at the start of 2023 that it was the new 3D printing technical partner for SailGP.&nbsp;“Over the past six months we’ve had a lot of conversations with a lot of different marine companies, not only in the UK but also in Europe,” Penfold says. “It suggests that the technology is on the verge of becoming mainstream in the marine sector.”Print tech&nbsp;There are a bewildering number of 3D printing technologies. Not all are suitable for finished parts or the marine environment, and others may be promising for future adoption but right now are very expensive. The key methods currently include:Fused deposition modelling (FDM): A method of material extrusion, this is perhaps the best-known 3D printing technology in which a print head lays down extruded layers of melted plastic filament, concrete or other materials. It is used in most hobbyist 3D printers.Vat polymerisation: In this method, light is used to selectively cure a photopolymer resin in a vat to create a complex solid shape. Stereolithography (SLA) is perhaps the best-known process, but there are many variants based on differing light sources and proprietary processes.Powder bed fusion: In a way, this is a more advanced version of FDM whereby a thermal energy source is used to fuse powder particles (thermoplastic, metals or ceramics) to build a solid object layer by layer. Selective laser sintering (SLS) and multi-jet fusion (MJF) are two example technologies. Parts produced using these methods tend to have excellent mechanical properties and can have complex geometries.Material jetting: Material jetting works in a similar way to a standard inkjet printer, but instead of ink uses photopolymers which are sprayed in layers and then cured with UV light.Binder jetting: This process is similar to SLS but uses binder droplets rather than heat to fuse power particles. It is a low-cost process for functional metal parts, although mechanical properties do not match those of powder bed fusion parts.Direct energy deposition (DED): An electron beam, laser or plasma is used to feed and fuse material simultaneously when it is deposited. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) used to create the RAMLAB/<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6617" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Shipyards (Company)">Damen</a> propeller is a form of DED. The tech is expensive and parts require surface finishing, but it can be used for high-end components in automotive, aerospace etc, making it one to watch for superyachts in the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295557/image/large-d45a2e168c0ce486d13f9c90f6eb01e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295557">Are we there yet?While the possibilities for 3D printing are immense, there are still some barriers to its widespread adoption in yacht construction. The WAAMpeller project by RAMLAB in Rotterdam showed the potential of additive manufacturing when it successfully printed a ship propeller in nickel alloy, aluminium and bronze that was subsequently class-approved by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1463" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bureau Veritas (Company)">Bureau Veritas</a>. However, the propeller required additional finishing, and the cost of such printing technologies is still prohibitively high for small-scale production.There is also the problem of size with most printers currently offering print scales of up to around one cubic metre, and the rapidly changing nature of the technology means it is a hard call for a yard to invest in a serious printer – one reason why third-party print companies will likely continue to provide off-site parts manufacture even as the technology matures.“The interesting thing is in metal 3D printing, which is still a bit boutique and expensive,” says Penfold. “But as new technologies come online, that’s getting cheaper and there are a lot of fabricated parts that suddenly you’re going to be able to print.”The result is more design freedom, which promises to provide savings in both cost and weight – advances that are probably only two to three years away. Similarly, the issue of size is being overcome not by larger print beds, but by designing in junctions that allow for component elements to be bonded together.&nbsp;“In FDM printing you can build bigger with print beds up to 12 metres long, but the quality is not great,” says Penfold. “The print technology that we use, which is MJF [see sidebar], can create parts that are 100 percent homogenous and equally strong in every axis. As the technology matures and metal printing gets cheaper, I think that will be a big thing for the marine industry.”Spares on demandIt is not just ease of manufacturing that 3D printing offers; it also opens up opportunities for spare parts on demand or, in the case of older models or obsolete parts, one-off replacements via laser scanning, modelling and printing.&nbsp;The idea of a yacht carrying its own 3D printer and printing off plastic and metal parts on demand is also tantalising, and this prospect was further bolstered in 2017 when Rotterdam-based RAMLAB partnered with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6617" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Shipyards (Company)">Damen</a>, Promarin, Autodesk and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1463" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bureau Veritas (Company)">Bureau Veritas</a> to 3D print a class-approved, 1.35-metre diameter ship propeller. The reality, however, is that such steps are likely many years away not least because of cost, space and the need for parts to be finished post-printing.&nbsp;“I don’t think we’re all going to have 3D printers on our yachts,” says Will Penfold, “but I think instead of having ten parts on a shelf somewhere gathering dust, companies will have a design on a server and when someone needs a part it will just be printed off and three days later it will be on board, rather than having to go through the longer process of conventional fabrication. We’re already in discussions along those lines.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295552/image/large-76d0e6721af67d976ea6a576c5c10514.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295552">A future blueprint&nbsp;Despite the challenges, 3D printing allows for complex geometries, custom designs and limited production runs, all of which are pertinent to the low-volume, high-quality nature of yacht building. Another relevant advantage is that the materials used are fully recyclable and reusable, which means an end-of-life solution for parts and tooling, waste reduction for prototyping, and the evolution of parts on the fly without having to create new moulds.So does this mean that we will soon be cruising in printed yachts that have come off a production line in a matter of days? This prospect was mooted in 2019 when the University of Maine printed a 7.62-metre open boat that broke three world records in 3D printing. But while you can now 3D-print houses, and 3D-printed boats are being made in the Netherlands for use on calm canals, it is unlikely we will get to this point in mainstream yachting.“The way the University of Maine boat is printed means it can float, but it would crack if you tried to navigate with it in waves,” says Nazzaro. “The other problem is weight [it came in at 2.2 tons].”&nbsp;Instead, Nazzaro believes the future is more likely in 3D printing moulds, which can then be used to build boats. AMufacture’s CEO and co-founder Craig Pyser agrees that printing tooling will become more widespread, but in tandem with CNC machines. Clearly, we are on the verge of more widespread adoption of 3D print tech in yacht construction, and that opens up some delicious prospects in terms of design and efficiency.&nbsp;“Someone said to me in my early days in this field that with 3D printing, complexity is free,” says Pyser. “When I fully understood what that meant it was an incredible moment, because it means clients are only limited by their imagination. DPFs are not only capable of reducing polluting emissions, but also of cancelling the smell of diesel or generators. “Owners’ awareness of these issues has led <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> to propose more cutting-edge air sanitation systems through the use of cold plasma,” explains La Penna. The team has seen the implementation of its ASPRA air purification products — a revolutionary system that removes dust, particulate matter, microbiological contaminants, such as viruses, fungi and pollen and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) — skyrocket. &nbsp;According to Faimatea, it’s a welcome development: “The Covid-19 crisis was a major wake-up call for the entire world, and the importance of proper air quality simply cannot be ignored anymore,” he explains. “I found it quite enlightening that as little as two years ago, aside from temperature and humidity, HVAC systems in the yacht industry did not have a specification on air quality. The ASPRA only charges particles and kills microbiological contaminants inside the application, and captures them directly on its own open structure filter (a collector) and no harmful radicals are produced. The system has very low energy consumption and can easily be connected to the ship’s system (220V/24V and a mod bus connection to read out the air quality). But there is also an option to place a stand-alone unit which can clean individual areas and rooms, Voorn tells us. With the industry taking a huge hit over the last 18 months, expense is, of course, a consideration for owners: “Expensive is a broad word when it comes to our health and return on investment. When you are not able to charter your fleet due to a pandemic, it is more expensive than the investment, which in that case is earned back very quickly. Much has been written about Tier III regulations and reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, but NOx emissions are only part of the drive towards the decarbonisation of shipping. Following the adoption and entry into force of the Paris Agreement on climate change, in 2016 the<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">&nbsp;International Maritime Organization&nbsp;</a>(IMO) outlined its own roadmap for a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181618/image/large-206e8f80826c2add42bd9754bbc58024.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181618">The yachting sector has so far been excluded from the strategy, but with a revision planned for spring 2023 and aware that the industry is under pressure to lead by example, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a> in the Netherlands was prompted to initiate an in-house research project to look into the eco-friendly yacht of the future.“We named the project ‘The Yacht of 2030’ to stay in line with the objective of the Paris Agreement that aimed for a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, rather than the IMO’s 50% in 2050,” says Perry van Oossanen, co-managing director of the eponymous studio. “In other words, we felt it was already possible to achieve a 40% or even 50% reduction by 2030.”Fully electric yachts using renewable energy, such as hydrogen, are still a thing of the future, at least in terms of the infrastructure required to keep the yachts operational, so when van Oossanen looked into how much CO2 emissions could be reduced today, it based its analysis on technologies that are readily available, taking as its benchmark a steel displacement motor yacht of under 500GT from 2008. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181617/image/large-cff82d96394df88a569917745764b399.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181617">The research proceeded by looking first at the auxiliary hotel loads, then the propulsion power demands, and finally making recommendations for a new vessel by drawing on data from the first two steps as well as reappraising the hull form, its dimensions and appendages. The end design was also compared to the benchmark yacht in terms of luxury, measured by the available interior area, as well as initial investment and running costs.Emission rates depend on the amount of fossil fuel burned, so the first step was to define a typical operational profile. Using Marine Traffic data from 10 yachts of between 40 and 60 metres in length, six average operational modes – cruising, crossing, maximum speed, manoeuvring, at anchor and in port – were established.&nbsp;Not surprisingly, the results showed that a typical superyacht spends most of the time either in port or at anchor. Discounting the periods spent in port, when it can be assumed yachts are on shore power, the modes with the biggest impact in terms of CO2 emissions are cruising, crossing and at anchor. The fact that only auxiliary hotel power is used at anchor suggests that reducing generator loads in this mode would have a significant effect on overall emissions in an eco-friendly superyacht concept.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181696/image/large-6cbc5ea4340f7dd077e3f598d48eb611.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181696">“We analysed the electric load balance of the benchmark design to identify the heavy consumers and by far the biggest in all modes was the HVAC system,” says van Oossanen. “Working with suppliers such as Isoclima and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heinen & Hopman (Company)">Heinen &amp; Hopman</a>, we looked into cutting heat absorption on sunny days in order to reduce the AC loads and energy consumption, and then at introducing more efficient equipment to further reduce the power demands.” &nbsp;&nbsp;By looking at the type of glass used for better solar protection and increasing the superstructure overhangs for more shade, heat absorption can easily be reduced. In terms of equipment, an AC unit with a heat wheel exchanger was introduced that pre-conditions the incoming air through the out-going air. This requires a larger and heavier system, but because less cooling is required a smaller and more power efficient chiller unit can be fitted. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181619/image/large-a1fc8225c699a20138bacb052ba0e3d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181619">Changes to the HVAC system alone resulted in a 13% saving in electric power. &nbsp;When incremental upgrades were also made to the steering, stabilising, lighting and boiler systems, it was possible to reduce the overall auxiliary power demand by 33%.When it came to investigating ways of reducing CO2 emissions by improving the efficiency of the propulsion configuration, conventional diesel power plants were compared with diesel-electric and hybrid systems.“We discounted diesel-electric systems quite quickly because they are costly and you lose too much energy in the conversion,” says van Oossanen. “A well-designed hybrid configuration, on the other hand, provides some gains, although very small, because of the possibility of combining engine and generator power to achieve the most efficient loading and fuel consumption in Power Take-In (PTI) and Power Take-Off (PTO) modes.”&nbsp;Better hull shapes have a bigger impact on reducing propulsion power demands. In this sense, Van <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Oossanen Naval Architects’</a> Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) effectively combines the low-speed efficiency of a full-displacement vessel with the maximum speed associated with a semi-displacement hull.&nbsp;The studio has further integrated the FDHF into its XL hull concept, which instead of prioritising volume over length aims to optimise length within a given gross tonnage for optimal speed, range and comfort.“Basically, we’ve changed what we always get asked by clients,” says van Oossanen. &nbsp;“Instead of them saying they want a 50-metre yacht and a top speed of 16 knots, we ask them how many guests they want, where they want to go and how much time they want to spend getting there, and then tell them the optimal main dimensions to do this efficiently and comfortably. Often this results in a yacht that is approximately 10% longer than a conventional hull.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181695/image/large-6b81251e47912e1dfd420cd9b5c4574b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181695"> The benchmark steel hull was also replaced with an aluminium one, which meant a reduction in displacement of approximately 150 tons and less hydrodynamic resistance. Finally, installing a Hull Vane under the transom to increase lift helped reduce resistance still further. Combining all these measures resulted in 51.4% fewer emissions at cruising speed, the operational mode that has the biggest impact in terms of emissions. &nbsp;In conclusion, the study showed that by using only proven and available technology to reduce the energy demands of the auxiliary and propulsion systems, and combining these savings with a more efficient hull design and power plant configuration, annual CO2 emissions could be cut by approximately 41% in this new, eco-friendly yacht concept. Given the pace of technological progress today, this would suggest it is highly possible to achieve the IMO’s aim of a 50% reduction, certainly by 2050 and possibly by 2030. Furthermore, the research revealed that although the initial investment increases, the running costs are lower, which means there is also a sensible payback period.&nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181694/image/large-72f3c9dfd4043bad38ea3941c564b4e2.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181694"> “Some of the improvements we looked into rely on very simple systems, such as occupancy-based lighting and AC that detects when no one is in a room and switches off the lights and air conditioning,” says van Oossanen. “However, in our experience the majority of shipyards are only actively researching these things when specifically asked by a client. A UV-C oxidation system generates ozone which emits electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths below 200 nanometers. This energetic electromagnetic radiation splits oxygen molecules into two separate oxygen atoms, which then attach to each other or to oxygen molecules, forming ozone molecules.Ozone is composed of three oxygen atoms. A basic oxygen molecule (O2) is formed out of two oxygen atoms. Oxygen atoms are highly reactive, meaning they will easily bond with particles such as bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms. The third oxygen atom of an ozone molecule can detach from it and re-attach to molecules of other substances. Conventional UV-C light attacks germs and viruses straight on as a virus that is exposed to UV-C light within the most efficient wavelength of 254 nanometers will eventually be disabled if the exposure time is long enough. The area of effect is inside the confined space of the air handling unit.An ultraviolet oxidation system indirectly attacks biological agents. The system uses UV-C light with lower wavelengths to generate ozone. These ozone particles attach, attack and disable micro-organisms. The area of effect is not inside the air handling unit, but in the much larger ducting system after the air handling unit. The big advantage? An ultraviolet oxidizing system can be applied in the limited space of an existing air treatment unit, supply duct or plenum.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/82375/image/large-12329fc879e30698bddf524cccb7ac3d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/82375">Find the best place to install a UV-C purifying system If the yacht has a fresh air system with local fan coil units, try installing an air duct purifier. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heinen & Hopman (Company)">Heinen &amp; Hopman</a> always advise installing in the air-handling unit, where recirculation air is present. “Here maximum air velocity is the lowest and air from all spaces comes by. Cooling coils and condensate pans are simultaneously irradiated when the lights are directly prior to them,” say <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heinen & Hopman (Company)">Heinen &amp; Hopman</a>.&nbsp;“The effectiveness of your UV-C light depends on two things – its irradiance and the exposure time. According to The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the minimal exposure time should be at least 0.25 seconds. That’s because some space inside the air handling unit is needed and that space is rarely available. Make your yacht pandemic-proof with these ventilation hacks

Getting a yacht from first vision to launch day is a complex process involving countless contributors, materials, man hours and very careful coordination. In this mix, suppliers play a crucial role. Contributing products of all sizes, from air conditioning units to engines, stabilisers, custom interiors, artisan decor, carpet, lighting and more, suppliers are responsible for a wealth of elements on board a yacht and their contribution is invaluable. Together, they help create something special; when it comes to a superyacht the whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts. Here, SuperYacht Times takes a look at the role suppliers play in a yacht build or refit, including challenges, yard/supplier relationships and the many benefits of working with suppliers.It is inevitable that every shipyard will have some interaction with suppliers during the course of a build or refit project. “The nature of custom-built yachts is that owners have dreams they want to see fulfilled,” says Marco Struik of custom interior design specialist Struik and Hamerslag.&nbsp;“Designers are specialists in translating dreams into plans and designs and we, the suppliers together with our shipyard colleagues, are the specialists who can actually build those dreams and at the same time assure it is fit for use in yachts. The installation on board really is a process of fitting the giant puzzle piece by piece into a perfect masterpiece.” &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45433/image/large-f5919ccf868b1b1a3844b75166a1a72b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45433"> Working with suppliers&nbsp; There are many benefits to working with suppliers, not least because it allows yards to partner with experts in their field. “It would not be possible for a yard to have all the knowledge and complex expertise desired by interior designers in-house,” says Xavier Bonnamy of Tai Ping, specialists in custom carpets. “There is no substitute for using creative artisans who bring many years of specialist knowledge and craftsmanship, and the background knowledge these specialists bring is invaluable in ‘adding value’, in helping to guide, develop and making a design work to best effect in the chosen medium,”&nbsp;agrees Howard Sansome, Managing Director of Aryma, creators of bespoke marquetry.&nbsp;Use of a specialist supplier has clear benefits both in terms of product quality and financial savings. “We do what we do every day; while a yard may build two systems a year we’re building 50 systems a year so our breadth of knowledge about one key area is vast,”&nbsp;says Ned Wood of Manson Anchors. “The yard can usually make significant savings by bringing us in early to optimise their design, offer alternatives and work on this area.”&nbsp;Specialist marine suppliers also have invaluable insight into the constraints of a yachting platform and how their own contribution fits into the wider puzzle, tailoring their design accordingly.&nbsp;“Yachts are moving objects and this should be considered with every part of the construction,”&nbsp;says Struik. “Although we are interior specialists the integration of technical installations is an extremely important part of the building process and makes the puzzle even more complex. Space is always limited, even in the largest yachts, and the challenge to find ways to integrate it all and make it work perfectly is a task that requires perfect cooperation of many disciplines.”&nbsp;Consulting with expert suppliers may also have the added benefit of improving the original concept. “Suppliers have the ability to educate owners and crew members on a given product or service,”&nbsp;says Katie Ross, Business Developer Manager at Quantum Stabilizers. “Through their knowledge, they can recommend the absolute best solution on a given yacht based on size, requirements and expectations.” Bonnamy agrees: “Sometimes people think we are ‘just’ suppliers but in fact, our input is more than that and we are deeply involved in intricate technical aspects, too.”In recent years demands for increasingly complex systems and yachts has also reinforced the importance of the supply chain. “Due to the accelerated pace of technological advancement and digital content/application of products and services, it would be extremely difficult for shipyards and owners to acquire and maintain the expertise in every product or service supplied to a new yacht construction project,”&nbsp;says Lee Kaddatz of Atlas Marine Systems, providers of shore power converters and marine electrical systems. Similarly, the irregularity of yacht projects means that many yards would struggle to maintain a full-time specialist workforce in certain fields. For example, “the production of interiors during the lead time of building a yacht is actually done in a limited time frame and for a yard to do all interior work in-house it requires several yachts in different stages to create continuity, and not many yards are able to do this,” says Struik. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45431/image/large-4c7959dbc4e7084b91cecdf0e0308538.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45431"> Yard/supplier relationships At the heart of most successful yard-supplier interactions are symbiotic relationships built on trust, many of which are decades old. “The relationship with a shipyard or owner's representative is often that of co-maker rather than supplier,” says Eric van Dijk of Heinen &amp; Hopman, suppliers of HVAC and refrigeration systems. “Working together in an efficient way is the key to success.”Every supplier interviewed for this article was unanimous in their opinion that the earlier their involvement in a project, the better the end result. The sooner the product is integrated into the whole, the less it will feel like an afterthought and potentially suffer as a consequence. “Our components are key to the design of the hull because there is always a juggle of key equipment and space has become an absolute premium, so ideally we work with the client early to offer different solutions to spatial optimisation,”&nbsp;says Wood. “The best contracts we have had are when we are fully integrated into the design process with the yard, working side by side, and the closer we work together the better the outcome.”&nbsp;&nbsp;While some companies directly supply a piece of standard equipment, many suppliers will interact closely with owners/owners reps to tailor the end result. “We are mostly involved in work that requires some or significant design development in order to create the end product,”&nbsp;says Sansome. “To give an example, I was approached by an end client whose brief was very simply: ‘I want to look up at the domed ceiling and see the flora and fauna from my gardens’. We bring a balanced, considered approach with our expertise in marquetry to give proper shape to an idea that is in the client’s mind’s eye, to bring it to life to best effect.”&nbsp;In many cases products/services are always customised from project to project. “We always custom design our elevators from the base up so we never really replicate past projects,” says Mike Brandt of bespoke elevator manufacturers Lift Emotion. “This means all our elevators are unique in looks and design and this requires a huge involvement from the engineers, project managers and the shipyard for a total integration, but this makes the process so nice to do.”&nbsp;In this way a fully personal service is able to be offered. “These systems simply aren’t off the shelf installs, and if they are treated that way, or the expectations of the yard are for that, generally there are more issues after the launch or the system won’t live up to expectation,”&nbsp;says Wood. “Each project is a unique combination of improvisation and routine,” says van Dijk. “There is only one thing that all our projects have in common: the main processing, all the way from initial inquiry to after-sales care as we believe in being a one-stop-shop from design and engineering to commissioning, training and maintenance.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45432/image/large-c7bbe7e3f1e33b358f08740af56124c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45432"> Challenges &amp; misconceptions Inevitably, even with the best relationships, there are still challenges faced by the supply chain. Primarily, these centre around a desire for early involvement to allow proper planning, proper lead times, realistic expectations around cost vs product quality, and communication.&nbsp;“In terms of new yacht construction, one of the biggest challenges is inconsistent order volume and resistance to sharing schedule delays or disruptions with customer acceptance due to shipyard concerns about market perceptions,” says Kaddatz. “Also obtaining accurate project information for yachts under construction such as delivery commitment dates when shipyard will make final payment and accept shipments.” Challenges also arise when lead times are not properly considered. “Clients understanding lead time is key,” says Ross. “There is some time involved in providing a quote, but beyond the quote the lead time to build the entire system is often underestimated, it is never off-the-shelf in the larger vessels.”It is often true that you get what you pay for. “Most buyers do not place enough weight on performance history or differentiate between large and small companies,”&nbsp;says Kaddatz. “If you think the products are all the same and you don’t take the time to understand the differentiating features, including the available additional options to enhance the application of the equipment, you are not utilising the expertise of your suppliers and you are guaranteed the highest cost/benefit. If a company is offering you the lowest price, they don’t have the expertise to provide the lowest total cost of ownership.”Inevitably many supply decisions will be based on money. “One of the biggest challenges at Quantum, is educating the owners, engineers and captains on the costs associated in designing, engineering, manufacturing, testing, crating and shipping a complete stabiliser system, sometimes with fins over 20-square-metres,”&nbsp;says Ross. "The level of sophistication and engineering to ensure optimal performance is often misunderstood or undervalued.”A final challenge faced by many companies, as is the case with so many niche artisan trades, is preserving their skills for the future and finding the talent for the next generation. “From our perspective, craftsmanship is scarce and the trade of yacht interiors requires the top talents in the interior production,”&nbsp;says Struik. “The biggest challenge is to educate and train new talents and for this we (as do many others) maintain an apprenticeship for young people to learn the trade and become the top talents of the future.”It is clear that there is passion and a dedication to craft throughout the supply chain. “We, like so many other suppliers, are dedicated to this industry and are passionate about delivering on our client’s desire for equipment that has been engineered, produced, installed and maintained with always the highest standards in mind,” concludes Brandt. Product of the Week: Digital Aftersales excellence for shipyards

It has been 12 months since we first introduced the complete rebuild project that is currently ongoing at the Derecktor shipyard in South Florida and how Anodyne is being transformed from a scrap-worthy vessel to one of the most meticulously built yachts in her class. The work on the 110-foot motor yacht has progressed in leaps and bounds since then, and her experienced build team have kept the project on track and ready for launch in the summer of 2018. We caught up with her captain, Parker Stockdale, to find out what the latest in the Anodyne story is.

While the hull of the project has been under cover at the Derecktor shipyard since 2015 – where it has been extended to its current 110 feet and completely transformed from its previous state – the superstructure is being built offsite by Southern Yacht Industries. Stockdale reports that the main deck structure is nearly complete with about 60% of the upper deck structure ready. While this work continues, blasting, painting and insulating of the lower deck compartments are underway to get these areas ready for interior installation at a later stage.

The next few months will see the completion of the pipework construction (in stainless steel and copper nickel) along with the installation of the full complement of onboard cabling. Local paint specialists Virgin Yacht will be in charge of the paint applications which is expected to start in the next two months. Anodyne will also be fitted with two custom tenders with construction on these to begin imminently.

The interior design by Lisa Pirofsky is completed and carpentry work will begin this summer. The exterior design of the project is the work of Overing Yacht Design, who is also behing the naval architecture, structural design, and engineering of the project. Anodyne is built on Overing's 'fast displacement' hull form.

On the technical front, every step of the design and construction process is being studied and documented by Captain Stockdale in association with Lloyds Register. Anodyne’s hull and machinery is expected to be awarded a Maltese Cross certification by the classification society. Heinen &amp; Hopman has taken over the management and installation of the HVAC and ventilation systems while Ultra Fog will make sure that Anodyne is equipped with some of the best hi-fog systems.

To streamline the process and make sure everything is running according to plan, the build team has erected a state-of-the-art office onsite at Derecktor and can be seen as proof of the good working relationship between the project and shipyard teams. “Our collaboration with Derecktor remains strong and healthy,” comments Captain Stockdale. “They have been excellent to work with.”

Build update: motor yacht Anodyne takes shape

Located in the Dutch town of Vlissingen, the well known Amels shipyard is having an open day for all yacht enthusiasts and those interested in a career in the yacht building industry. Heinen & Hopman going green

All superyachts have air conditioning and refrigeration installations for provisions, making them subject to increasingly stringent regulations regarding the use of coolants. Heinen &amp; Hopman Engineering has developed an ingenious new system, the replacement chiller, which can replace the existing onboard facilities with a new state-of-the-art cooling system without the need to make openings in the hull. Heinen &amp; Hopman’s replacement chillers are designed and manufactured as a building package and suitable for transporting through the doors of a superyacht. As coolants such as chlorous CFKs and HCFKs deplete the ozone layer, agreements to gradually phase out these products were established in the Montreal protocol of 1989. Over time the European Union has further developed this convention with an accelerated prohibition date for ozone-depleting substances in EU regulation 2037/2000. Under the terms of this regulation, HCFKs (such as R22) have been banned from use in new installations since 2000 and for service and maintenance purposes since 2010. Although regenerated (recycled) HCFKs can still be used until 2015, they will also be prohibited and only (non-chlorous) HFKs will be permitted. “It is clear that yacht owners will have to act sooner rather than later,” says Joep Hopman, director at Heinen &amp; Hopman. “One of the greatest challenges with replacing a chiller installation is the difficulty of gaining access. This expensive and time-consuming operation involves cutting into the hull, removing the existing chiller and mounting a new one in its place. Now, with our innovative line of custom replacement chillers, Heinen &amp; Hopman offers a new way of overcoming this hurdle.” The Heinen &amp; Hopman method allows the easy disassembly and reassembly of the cooling system. The system is designed in-house, manufactured in the company’s own production facilities in the Netherlands, fully tested in its own testing area, disassembled, brought on board, reassembled and made operational. Heinen &amp; Hopman’s facilities in Barcelona, Antibes and La Specia can also perform this service. “Another key choice that owners have to make is whether to refit - which can lead to a loss of capacity and a risk of leakage - or to install a new installation with a similar design that uses a new type of coolant,” adds Hopman. “The benefits of a new installation include operational security and a capacity guarantee. More efficient energy consumption and the availability of components are further advantages of Heinen &amp; Hopman’s replacement chiller system.” The chillers are available in standard sea water or fresh water cooled versions with a cooling capacity of 20, 30 &amp; 40 TR, 2-Stage and 40, 50 &amp; 60 TR, 3-Stage.
