Another example, we were privileged to see the cutting-edge maxi Flying Nikka, a 19-metre articulated foiler built by an Italian team and designed to exceed 40 knots at top speed.”Superyacht Challenge Antigua (March 2024) Serving as a welcome kick-off to the regatta season each year is the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Held annually in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard, the race begins and ends just off English Harbour and is made up of daily pursuit races, as well as an optional race around the island.Famous for its laid-back atmosphere, those competing in the Superyacht Challenge Antigua are divided into three classes (buccaneers, corsairs and privateers) and are awarded Caribbean barrels of rum for their successes. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219539/image/large-eda4015f563d6bef20bdd258c92d9401.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219539">The Superyacht Challenge Antigua is the perfect event for racing newbies, as Co-founder Paul Deeth explains: “You will find great racing in a relaxed and friendly setting which is ideal for owners experiencing superyacht racing for the first time. Come for the racing, stay for the nightlife, as event organiser and co-founder François Tolède explains: “Every evening the race village vibrates with incredible concerts and projections of the day's races on a massive screen. Launched in 1923 under the name Wildfire, the 32-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> is steeped in a century's worth of history. Celebrating 100 years on the water this year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> has sailed the world and holds many secrets and stories beneath her decks.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271313/image/large-7264148a82ffefca5a6f7b315df86b4e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271313">The Herreshoff family heritage spans back over 150 years when blind boat builder John Brown Herreshoff went into partnership with his younger brother, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, to start the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff Manufacturing Company</a>.John dedicated his life to yacht carpentry in a workshop in the small town of Bristol, Rhode Island. With the help of their father, Charles Frederick, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff Manufacturing Co</a>. was created and added to the history of naval construction.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271315/image/large-2a764787faf7743f4dbb99080dab7a95.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271315">The company grew in size over the years, and alongside his brothers Nathanael and James Herreshoff, the family brought many boats to life, including the legendary 1903 schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4977" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ingomar53.88m (176'9&quot;)GraafShip">Ingomar</a>. John passed away in 1915, and Nathanael Herreshoff took the helm, which led to the creation of the steel schooner Wildfire.Known as Project 891, Wildfire was constructed in 1922 and launched in 1923. Wildfire was commissioned by Charles Hardy, commodore of the New York Yacht Club for a cost of $76,000, which is around $1,348,280 in today’s valuation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271314/image/large-abf0aab29ca7e0c9a8efc56d89a48556.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271314">Wildfire was launched with a 20.5-feet beam, an almost 4-metre draft, and an overall length of 95 feet (29-metres). The impressive schooner won regattas and tournaments, including the Schooner Cup in 1924.In 1949, Wildfire entered the Brazilian waters after being purchased by Jorge Bhering de Matos in the United States. She was then sold to Dircea Fortouta, an industrial entrepreneur, who christened her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a>– meaning a daring, bold woman who is ready for any challenge.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271318/image/large-5f0e71067010a50452c710779dfd7954.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271318"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> spent 45 years in Brazil, in the Guanabara Bay located in Southeast Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro were she welcomed royalty such as the now King Charles III of the United Kingdom, and celebrities such as Elvis Presley, Brazilian music artist Billy Blanco, actress Rita Hayworth and Former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.&nbsp;Over the years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> underwent renovations which affected her overall appearance and design, but thankfully not her charm. After the death of her owner, the yacht was taken to the city of Santos, Brazil to her new owner Auro Mourandrade.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271316/image/large-517766f904e987198966efa6270603ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271316">In the 1990s, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP Yachts</a> owned by naval engineer Manoel Chaves, were enlisted to begin her restoration. The 1922 schooner received a new teak deck and interior renovations and in 1999 she was sold to a group of Asian businessmen, where she returned to Rio de Janeiro.However, due to a lack of maintenance care, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> almost sank in Guanabara Bay and was neglected for almost two years, leading to holes and rust forming on her steel hull and superstructure. But in 2002, Auro Mourandrade and Gilberto Miranda bought Atrevida as scrap metal and enlisted Manoel Chaves to take care of her restoration. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271317/image/large-6badd5ce3106318f744a3a73c6877ad0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271317">The holes she had gained over the years were first closed before she was towed from Rio de Janeiro to Santos by a fishing boat for the start of her repairs. The shipyard she was shipped to specialised in aluminium trawlers and therefore could not use the same installations for the work in carbon steel.As a result of this, a yard was reserved at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP Yachts</a> for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> and the shipyard was in touch with the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol to find the original construction plans for Wildfire. In March 2004, a skilled team of professionals embarked on her restoration work by installing modern equipment, while maintaining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a>’s character.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271319/image/large-fc60e6933c53a85be1b3c04b206e9af8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271319">During her extensive 14 month restoration, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> gained the most up-to-date amenities, such as air conditioning, onboard computers and electronics and a new navigation system, as well as wireless bow and stern thrusters and a remote controlled sail hoisting system. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271321/image/large-da87cbbec66f07f4a4f181b2b2b7204f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271321">In tradition with the era in which she was built, her chain shock absorbers, balustrade stays, rigging system and other stainless steel items were built and engraved with her name, Atrevida. The wooden bowsprit was rebuilt in mahogany to the original Nathanael Herreshoff design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271320/image/large-eb4eb9acd6a67c6551d179b9c05c24b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271320">Her carbon steel davits had also been damaged over the years and were replaced with a new stainless steel set with handles and winches similar to her original design. Her structural work included the closing of the deck with overlapping steel plates placed and riveted as they would have been when she was originally built.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271322/image/large-69bd93591d2b1da7d9bd618ff0342ced.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271322">The main deck houses and deck hatches of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> were rebuilt with mahogany wood that had been reclaimed from old demolished houses, as the cutting down of this wood is now forbidden. The yard also created a fibreglass auxiliary boat in the same dimensions as her original wood counterpart, with identical rudders, helm, controls and upholstery.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270890/image/large-4d667d1fc2e366a14366fea44910e662.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270890">Everything else onboard was repaired and rebuilt as close to her original design as possible, and her name was engraved across doors, tables and other items onboard. The historical importance of the project can be seen in the main living areas, with bevelled glass and curtains, which are the same style as she would have had when she was first built.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270889/image/large-3b4dc602a33be0f3cd77229e3305e86a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270889">Her interior has been finished with traditionally styled beams, crystal styled cabinets and classic upholstered seating, following her reclaimed designs. Her rigging has also been equipped with modern day technologies such as telephone and internet connections to keep guests onboard entertained and up-to-date. This was also placed high up her masts, so as not to spoil her original design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270887/image/large-10d0a17be46ba487800a1fbd0f5a031e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270887">In August 2005, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> once again entered the water to continue the Herreshoff brothers legacy. The twin-masted schooner was one of seven large yachts built between 1903 and 1905 by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff</a> shipyard, and is the smaller version of yachts Eleonora and Westward. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette of 191542.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1915">Mariette of 1915</a> can carry both eight guests and eight crew and was last refitted in 2017 at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> shipyard. Classic 28m Vitters sailing yacht Carmella finds new owners

In April 2021 the 31.09-metre classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> motor yacht Blue, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4489" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nereus31.09m (102'0&quot;)Feadship1969">Nereus</a>, was sold, Francesca Webster sat down over video call with her new owner to learn more about the story behind the boat and his unplanned ownership of her. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/214433/image/large-5fb10d981ef37cf17185c08f188584bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/214433"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4489" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nereus31.09m (102'0&quot;)Feadship1969">Nereus</a> was launched in 1969 to the designs of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt Naval Architects</a>, meaning she belongs to a particularly fine period of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> motor yachts. In her owner’s opinion; “There is something about the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadships</a> from that period that I have always admired, the proportions; the bow; the way the whole boat comes together is unequalled. No one made prettier motor yachts than the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadships</a> of the 1960s.”Despite a lifelong admiration for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> motor yachts, her owner was not contemplating acquiring one. A diehard sailor and owner of mostly classic sailing yachts, owning a large motor yacht was not on the radar, that was until a yacht broker friend mentioned the down-on-her-luck, but beautifully restored, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> sitting at Lauderdale Marine Centre. “He sent me an article which described her history and said ‘Hey, you think you spent a lot restoring yachts, take a look at this..”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223698/image/large-ea810950b20cbba97c4248079b39e50d.webp" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223698">Blue, as she was then called, had an unfortunate history of ownership, with her last two owners, one after the other, having poured their hearts and souls into her restoration, but having both sadly passed away before she was complete. In fact, it is estimated that combined they spent in excess of $20,000,000 stripping her down and restoring her to better than new condition, an extraordinary cost for a yacht of some 31-metres. “I remember parking the car at the marine centre, we could see her from where we sat, and I knew straight away that I would be writing a cheque before the day was done.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223701/image/large-4ee5ad7d8dae5b3e406bccbdee9c774b.webp" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223701"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223694/image/large-e55e0ef05dfddd22dbc9f2005321555f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223694">For his wife, stepping aboard the yacht was the moment the deal was signed, as Blue’s 7.62-metre beam and 184 GT volume opened around her. Spending winters living aboard &nbsp;their 65-foot <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6321" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fleming Yachts (Company)">Fleming</a>, the couple are not strangers to life onboard yachts, but the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> offers something more. Able to accommodate six guests between three comfortable staterooms, including a large master suite with walk-around bed and ensuite, as well as a saloon with separate dining area, there is an abundance of entertainment and living space. As her owner put it, “It was one of those terrible things that can happen when you know you’re about to make a huge and crazy decision. My wife was inside the yacht and I saw the look on her face and we just said OK, let's try it and see what we think of life owning a boat this size. So far we have had a ball!” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223693/image/large-35fc65fb13cac5c6c836d8340f053364.webp" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223693"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223700/image/large-b76edffa57aa98e043f536eccfb94c39.webp" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223700">So the decision was made and Blue was renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4489" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nereus31.09m (102'0&quot;)Feadship1969">Nereus</a>. When any yacht is renamed, it is always a wonder how the new name is chosen, but for her owner the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4489" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nereus31.09m (102'0&quot;)Feadship1969">Nereus</a> was a natural choice. In addition to his various boats, the owner is currently restoring a 78-foot <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff</a> from 1905 named Doris. “Doris was one of the original Greek goddesses of the sea, while Nereus was the Old Man of the Sea. Together, they had 51 children. &nbsp;We’ve been restoring Doris for a long time and when we had this crazy idea of buying the old <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, we thought this would be a fun name because finally Doris and Nereus can be reunited – once Doris’ restoration is finally complete, of course!”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223699/image/large-bd4295eb6119e0c1b3a5d575119440f2.webp" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223699">The step up to full displacement has been a big change for the couple, but they have enjoyed being able to run the boat lightly handed, and they don’t intend to have crew onboard. “We have a captain that oversees the entire fleet of boats and he and I have had a fantastic time. We’ve taken her from New York to Maryland, Palm Beach to Key Largo, just the two of us and she has been completely manageable.” Offering comfort even in rough seas.Over the coming years the couple have big plans, a trip to the extensive <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> archive in the Netherlands is definitely on the cards for one, but they also hope to ship her to Europe and explore the Mediterranean. For the coming year or so however, Nereus will remain in the US and Bahamas, and perhaps the Pacific Northwest.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223703/image/large-1a09783d47a288d9edea3f2693780590.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223703">“Most of all we feel honoured to be the beneficiaries of all of the work that has gone into the vessel, stripping her right back down to bare steel, the replacement of the panelling and furniture – we really can’t take credit for any of it. Her previous owners did a fantastic job” The only planned work onboard is to convert the dining table into an office, making her a viable location to ‘work from home’ from over the course of the coming years. As far as their friends and family are concerned, mad as the purchase may have seemed, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4489" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nereus31.09m (102'0&quot;)Feadship1969">Nereus</a> has found the right owners in the end, and we look forward to keeping track of this historic Feadship in the hope she may one day appear in the waters of Amsterdam!

The 31m classic Feadship Nereus and the unexpected story of her ownership

William Randolph Hearst, although not super-rich in the Onassis sense, was nevertheless a towering personality when it came to the print media of that era. He owned numerous newspapers and magazines in every US state – including Motor Boating in the yachting sector.Initially involved in politics, he was twice elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and ran unsuccessfully for President of the United States in 1904. During his political career he was generally associated with the left wing of the Progressive Movement claiming to speak on behalf of the working class. At the end of World War I, he started promoting a more conservative approach and became a fierce anti-communist following the Russian Revolution. He was deeply suspicious of the League of Nations and of the British, French, Russians and the Japanese. He was a leading supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the early 1930s but became his enemy on the right wing from 1934.Hearst’s empire reached a peak of 20 million readers a day in the mid 1930s. He was a poor manager of finances and was so deeply in debt during the Great Depression that most of his assets had to be liquidated in the late 1930s. However he managed to keep control of his newspapers and magazines. If you picked up a glossy brochure about a new sailing yacht and read about its “modern underwater profile with a fin keel incorporating a trim tab and a low VCG bulb keel with a balanced spade rudder”, you would be forgiven for thinking that it was the result of extensive innovation and the latest design thinking. It is actually a contemporary description of the 38-foot yacht Dilemma designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Nathanael G. Herreshoff</a> and launched 130 years ago. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23943/image/large-5b6d84cdb7fa55934bdba508308adc3c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23943">“The combination of modern materials and improved sail plans have allowed some of the most innovative ideas of the late 19th century to finally become a reality,” says Mark Small, a naval architect at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rob Doyle Design (Company)">Rob Doyle Design</a>. &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> unwittingly caused a bit of a stir in 2015 when it described 83.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5598" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Savannah83.5m (273'11&quot;)Feadship2015">Savannah</a> as “The world’s first hybrid superyacht.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> shot back with the reminder that in 2008 it had launched 58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ethereal58.04m (190'5&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2009">Ethereal,</a> the ketch-rigged sailing yacht noted for her pioneering hybrid propulsion that could draw on 500 kW/h of stored energy in her Li-ion battery bank. &nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/26772/image/large-300157fb6a5726426fb4bf052068b75e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26772">The first diesel-electric (DE) ship was the Russian tanker Vandal in 1903 and hybrid-powered submarines have been around for well over a hundred years. Modern advances in AC drive technology and power management systems largely derived from the commercial and military sectors, together with demand for low emissions and noise levels and increased flexibility and redundancy, is driving DE and hybrid solutions for yachts. &nbsp;Pods able to rotate through 360 degrees gave rise to Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems for automatically controlling the position and heading of a vessel. Once limited to semi-submersible drilling platforms, oceanographic research vessels, cable layers and cruise ships, the popularity of the compact and user-friendly <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS system with individually steerable thrusters has meant DP capability is now available for smaller yachts under 30 metres in length. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/193496/image/large-b26d15d3df27b2557f09da4d17658e8e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/193496">The principles of hydrostatic stability for floating bodies, the basis of modern naval architecture, were first outlined by Archimedes around 250 BC. Boat builders have been looking for ways to enhance the stability of hull shapes ever since.The German engineer Otto Schlick was the first to suggest using a gyroscope to supply torque to oppose rolling motions and his system was installed on a torpedo boat in 1906. The concept was improved upon by the American inventor Elmer Ambrose Sperry and the naval transport vessel USS Henderson was the first large ship with gyro stabilisers in 1917. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172811/image/large-ba5bf0ed552be640c1e308b4f7c85abb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172811"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/187257/image/large-b7f6824988cd06a33da374517487549f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/187257">Significantly, all these innovations were introduced first on naval or passenger ships. Indeed, modern specialists like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/964" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Naiad Dynamics (Company)">Naiad Dynamics</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum Marine</a> pioneered stabilisation solutions in the military and commercial sectors long before applying their know-how to superyachts.“Although stabiliser fins originated with the military, they are now standard on every superyacht,” says Erik Spek, Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure Yacht Design &amp; Naval Architects</a> in the Netherlands. “What gets me every time is that the order form of one particular supplier still asks us to specify the type of combatant vessel!” &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/32355/image/large-f0dd19709e818107561bcd791e0a3fbb.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32355"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/32349/image/large-cdce2d5b197edb51960eb79d0dec871c.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32349">There are very few technical innovations that have migrated from leisure yachts to other sectors. Water jet propulsion is a rare example. The Italian inventor Secondo Campini unveiled the first functioning pump-jet engine in 1931, but it never became a commercial product. The first person to achieve that was the New Zealand inventor Sir William Hamilton in 1954. Hamilton never claimed to have invented jet propulsion, crediting Archimedes and his screw turbine, but he did refine the concept enough to produce the first modern, commercially viable jet boat. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/79583/image/large-594b4e721e8f5e6805676c14f626d707.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/79583">When scaled up in size, the performance, manoeuvrability and shallow draft of waterjets made them ideal for fast patrol boats and high-speed ferries. At this point, the flow of knowledge was reversed and any developments in the military and commercial fields were quickly picked up by superyacht builders. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1181" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydro Tec S.r.l. (Company)">Hydro Tec</a> founder Sergio Cutolo, for example, began his career as a naval architect developing naval and passenger vessels, as well as fast yachts, for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1486" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rodriguez Group (Company)">Rodriquez Group</a>.&nbsp;Even current trends in aesthetics seem to have trickled down from other sectors. The exterior lines of yachts such as motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A 119.0m (390'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH2008">A</a> designed by Philippe Starck and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6018" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bold85.0m (278'10&quot;)SilverYachts2019">Bold</a> by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> were inspired by military designs, and modern explorer yachts take their styling cues from research and supply vessels. Analysis from our yachting archive reveals that in 1970 there were 144 sailing vessels in existence of all types, from schooners to cutters, sloops, and ketches. Broken down by length overall, there were nine yachts over 50-metres, twenty-six between 40 and 49-metres, and one hundred and nine between 30 and 39-metres. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/58394/image/large-58f7772ebce25583296f253ed4e0d157.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/58394">It should also not be forgotten that the established sailing yacht builders of that era were, in general, not very active in constructing large vessels as the costs involved were high and the market was yet to be developed. There were, of course, a few die-hard owners who would keep some of the older yachts that had survived World War II in service. This was in the days before <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> started building large motor sailers and when frequently relied upon technologies such as satcoms had yet to be invented for yachting purposes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45789/image/large-ec4c5eb1372fc46fcaf3f1e344031da5.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45789">Of the 144 yachts which made up the fleet in 1970, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/192" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> were behind the build of 17 vessels, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> constructed seven, Scottish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1110" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="William Fife (Company)">Fife</a> and American builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff</a> both completed six each, whilst another 90 shipyards were responsible for the remainder.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/64562/image/large-b8ce46a72989078bd206516d7a589903.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64562">As many yachts were still being discovered in the 1970s and 80s, the restoration business was in its infancy and would steadily become an important part of the yacht market as the years progressed. It has to be said, sometimes older is better and there are many in the industry who would say that sailing on a vintage yacht gives an unbeatable feeling which cannot be matched by today's high-tech vessels. The Capri Classica got off to an exciting start in the scenic Bay of Naples yesterday with an action-packed opening day of racing. Despite her smaller size and consistent speed of only 8.5 knots, Orianda still finished within the time limit. Orianda’s captain Sebastiano Marulli d’Ascoli commented, “The event is amazing.
