Two acclaimed Dutch designers join forces to launch&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Weel Sluijter (Company)">Weel Sluijter</a>, a bold new studio already making waves in the 50-metre-plus market. Formed in late 2024 by Dutch yacht designers Jim Sluijter and Bernd Weel, the Amsterdam-based studio has already made an impression.The announcement of their partnership was delivered quietly during the Monaco Yacht Show last year, with a subtle social media post in place of a grand unveiling but the industry was quick to take notice. Within weeks, conversations were underway with shipyards and by autumn, the pair were fully engaged in their first collaborative project with a prominent Dutch yard.While details of the project remain under wraps, the energy surrounding this creative union suggests it is one worth following closely. Francesca Webster caught up with Bernd and Jim to learn more about the direction of their new studio and the pivotal decisions already shaping their future portfolio.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370745/image/large-77fbcb93a367d54d3776546739eabf39.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370745">Combining ForcesJim Sluijter and Bernd Weel’s paths have long run in parallel; both hail from Alkmaar, both are products of design disciplines beyond yachting and both have built reputations through hands-on, build-informed design experience.Sluijter’s career has spanned design departments at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure</a> and most recently at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, where he served as in-house exterior designer for five years. His credits include the 82-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haven82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Haven</a>, a project which he sees as a pivotal career moment. “After delivering <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Haven82.0m (269'0&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Haven</a>, I realised it was the right time to make a move,” he shares. “I wanted to build something of my own.”Bernd Weel, meanwhile, established his eponymous studio more than a decade ago, having entered yacht design via architectural and automotive studies in Italy. His career-defining moment came early: an extensive refit of the 85-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/272" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Queen Miri91.5m (300'2&quot;)Neorion2004">Queen Miri</a>, which grew into a near three-year project. “It was a deep dive into everything, from technical meetings to design execution. I learned the industry from the inside out.”&nbsp;Following the refit of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/272" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Queen Miri91.5m (300'2&quot;)Neorion2004">Queen Miri</a>, Bernd Weel Design became established in the motor yacht sector, predominantly designing yachts in the 25-40 metre segment. Long term partnerships with the likes of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3031" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lynx Yachts (Company)">Lynx Yachts</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4433" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Outer Reef Yachts (Company)">Outer Reef</a>) and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman</a>, bore excellent fruit, such as the highly regarded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> and the 27.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9444" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avontuur27.4m (89'11&quot;)Lynx Yachts2022">Avontuur</a>.&nbsp;Despite their differing trajectories, a chance encounter at the Cortina Design Weekend in 2021 sparked a friendship. “We realised we were the same age, from the same area and we just clicked,” Sluijter says. “There was no immediate plan to work together, it was just beers and creative conversations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370742/image/large-411f75aac6707ccec54413bf72fc4b58.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370742">That changed in January 2024, when Jim began to contemplate the foundation of his own studio and was looking at examples of profitable, existing design houses. “It is a tough move to make alone and the best example I had of someone creating a successful studio themselves was Bernd, so I thought, perhaps he was the right person to work with.” &nbsp;&nbsp;“Jim came to me and said, ‘Why don’t we start something together?’” Weel recalls. “At first, I was hesitant, I’d spent the past decade building something on my own and as a studio we had plenty of work to keep us busy, but I spoke with my wife and she was really supportive and got me excited about the opportunity to share the creative process with another designer I respect. After a few days of letting the idea sink in, it felt right.”In order to come together, the duo made some big decisions, most significantly the decision to concentrate on the plus-50 metre segment and solely on exterior design. Not only does their combined experience lend itself to this market segment, but both felt that honing in on the custom and semi-custom superyacht sector would help to refine their offering and push them as a collective to be as focused as possible in reaching their goals.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370728/image/large-a2a6b77a36a02d9ae7aaed28d5269eea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370728">A Collaborative ApproachWhat sets <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Weel Sluijter (Company)">Weel Sluijter</a> apart is not just the pedigree of its founders, but the clear and equal footing on which they’ve built their partnership. “From day one, it’s been 50/50,” says Bernd. “There’s no ego. We work together on every project, particularly during the creative process and we’ve both been surprised by how well the collaboration has worked.”This approach is already bearing fruit. “We quickly realised that while we design differently, there's mutual understanding in those differences,” Sluijter adds. “We trust each other’s instincts, that’s key.”While the team remains compact, including studio operations lead Kika and two key freelance collaborators, the work already underway reflects their strategic direction. Though details of their first projects remain under wraps, the designers hint at an initial reveal during the Monaco Yacht Show in September for one of their first design projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370729/image/large-fc45c764abf5a830e6ff5e5c298dd428.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370729">Recipe for SuccessThough still early days, the duo are already refining a shared design ethos. “We’re not trying to stamp out a single aesthetic,” says Sluijter. “Instead, we focus on tailoring each project to the client and the shipyard, while maintaining a recognisable standard of quality and creativity.”Their pragmatic approach, shaped by years of experience working within shipyards and navigating build constraints, has quickly set them apart. “Clients appreciate that we’re not dreamers,” Weel notes. “We know how things are built and we know how to make ideas feasible.”Their success thus far, they agree, is a combination of timing, reputation and relationships. “It helps that we’ve each built long-term connections in the industry,” says Sluijter. “Many of the people we’ve worked with over the last decade are now in senior roles and keen to collaborate.”They also acknowledge a generational shift in the market. “We’re seeing more first-time owners in their thirties and forties,” Weel observes. “For them, legacy names might not mean much. They’re looking for fresh thinking and that’s what we offer.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370725/image/large-bf219ca4fa7b611043c3a3151611bc12.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370725">Looking AheadAsked what success looks like in five years, both designers are refreshingly aligned: “We both still want to be creative and proactive in the process of drawing our projects,” says Bernd. “We don’t want to become managers who are just running a team, the creative process is what drives us.”That said, they acknowledge growth is inevitable. “We might add a few more designers, but the focus will always be on producing the best result,” says Sluijter. “Every idea goes on the wall. It’s not about who created it, it’s about what works best for the project.”Amsterdam remains the studio’s home, a city they feel offers both creative energy and logistical advantages. In this interview, founder Hans Webbink reflects on his career, the shipyard’s unconventional journey, the challenges of scaling a boutique brand, and how recent milestones – including the acquisition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> – are setting the stage for the next chapter in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler’s</a> evolution.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364027/image/large-66a4df2871dadae0fd868913bfc1b85f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364027">You had a varied corporate career before establishing&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler Yachts</a>, can you share a bit of your story?I began competitive sailing as an Optimist at the age of four, and from that moment, boats and watersports became a central part of my life. While studying Business Economics at Groningen University, I was part of the Dutch Olympic team in the Flying Dutchman class. To support my sailing, I began trading sailboats.After university, I joined Shell as an oil trader, living and working across Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Sailing became a weekend pursuit. Following the Gulf War – during which I spent five months as a ‘guest’ of Saddam Hussein while serving as GM of Shell Kuwait – I left Shell and took on a global marketing and sales role at Philips. However, the constant relocations began to wear thin. By forty, I realised my true passion lay in boats.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333483/image/large-d34e2731df7d8e20bfd64885082905cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333483">In 2001, I left the corporate world and launched Antaris, a yard specialising in fibreglass dayboats and cruisers. Focused on functionality through innovation, we became market leader in the Netherlands by 2008, producing 300 boats annually. After merging with Maril and Makma to form Aquatec Industries – which captured over 50% market share – I sold the company in search of a new challenge, and founded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler Yachts</a>.The vision was bold: steel yachts that were twice as fast, twice as elegant, and fully custom-built. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> launched strongly in 2010, but the financial crisis soon hit, shrinking the steel yacht market by 60%. We pivoted, aiming to compete with leading producers of fast fibreglass yachts. In collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, we introduced the NG43 Offshore – our first aluminium planing motoryacht. This highly efficient, custom-built vessel won the 2016 European Powerboat of the Year award, making <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> the first Dutch yard to triumph in this competitive category.When you founded&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler Yachts</a>&nbsp;in 2010, what gap in the market were you aiming to fill and how has that vision evolved?At the time, steel motoryachts had a poor reputation – slow, boxy, and standardised, often likened to “caravans on the water.” Buyers had little room for personalisation, which felt entirely at odds with the investment required.Steeler was created to change that. From the outset, our philosophy was simple: we don’t sell yachts – we build exactly what each client needs. Full customisation became our cornerstone. Working with designer Martin Bekebrede, we launched the NG series – a platform combining timeless design with exceptional space utilisation. No two builds are alike, and we’ve delivered 110 unique motoryachts to date.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289732/image/large-f411ceaa0c583f40202a4fd04ed2fab5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289732">We also challenged performance expectations. Instead of limiting clients to inland cruising speeds, we designed yachts capable of 10 to 15 knots – ideal for both rivers and coastal waters. As the market responded, recognition followed, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> receiving awards and nominations almost every year since 2011. In 2013, we collaborated with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> to develop our first aluminium planing yacht, the NG43 Offshore. Its exceptional efficiency and handling won the European Powerboat of the Year award in 2016 – the first Dutch yard to do so in the production-dominated category.Our move into aluminium planing yachts expanded the concept further. Aluminium offered strength, efficiency, and stability – a compelling alternative to mass-produced fibreglass yachts. Though more costly to build, the result was a better yacht.While our client-first approach mirrors that of Dutch superyacht builders, it’s rare in the 50 to 100-foot segment. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> now attracts owners seeking a more private, lower-maintenance alternative to larger yachts – without compromising on quality. Many describe us as a “barn find” in the market.With the acquisition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> and sixteen yachts currently in build – a record for us – we’re focused on growing global recognition for a boutique shipyard offering a superyacht experience on a smaller scale.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364028/image/large-0e792fcc12257b4de507d414c7f5749a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364028">What were some of the biggest challenges in scaling a brand that prioritises bespoke craftsmanship?The main challenges have been twofold. First, limited resources for global marketing have made it difficult to reach our niche audience – highly discerning clients who often don’t know about us until they “discover” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a>. Fortunately, once they do, our 99% customer loyalty since 2010 speaks volumes.Second, inflation presents risks during our typical two-year build cycle. This requires a foundation of trust and transparency with clients to navigate unexpected cost fluctuations together.What sets&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler Yachts</a>&nbsp;apart in a highly competitive industry?In the 50 to 100-foot segment, our proposition is unique: full customisation, innovative design, personal service, and top-tier craftsmanship. Production in Meppel, the Netherlands has resumed at full strength, with both teams now working seamlessly together. Initially, there was natural rivalry – we had been competitors for years. But through open dialogue, shared vision, and simply working side-by-side, that tension quickly turned into mutual respect. Steeler Yachts, based in the Netherlands, is reportedly poised to take over the Dutch yacht builder, Holterman Shipyard.

Dutch yacht builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> has declared bankruptcy. The shipyard, which has operated for nearly three decades, has faced significant financial challenges in recent years, with work halting on-site in Meppel for several weeks.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320173/image/large-53f349aa96150965369c15b57ac55c92.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320173"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> filed for bankruptcy after the shipyard’s sheds were emptied, leaving no boats in production. Curator Rienk de Vries confirmed to local news publications that the bankruptcy process is still in its early stages, with the potential for an acquisition still in place.&nbsp;"The bankruptcy is still fresh. The oil slick is not that big yet, it still has to spread, but there does seem to be interest," he noted, indicating that there are potential candidates interested in a takeover, with hopes to retain as many employees as possible.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560">Holterman Shipyard</a> currently employs fourteen individuals, all of whom are now facing uncertainty after work ground to a halt due to a lack of new orders. It is also believed that a rise in pricing of aluminium had contributed towards the shipyard’s financial difficulties, leading to mounting losses.“The director indicated that orders were declining. Partly due to rising prices of light metals such as aluminium, losses started to mount from 2022. The orders that were needed to fill the gaps did not materialise. And yes, then it is over quickly,” said De Vries.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Holterman Shipyard</a> was originally founded by Johannes Holterman in 1994, and later handed over to his son Robbert in the late 1990s. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> offered me a job as soon as I finished my studies in naval architecture, and this was my first contact with the yachting world. I had no idea what to expect, but it has certainly not disappointed me over the past 19 years, during 11 of which I have been co-owner, and I am proud to have worked on a such a huge range of fantastic projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/278833/image/large-5d56275f56fb7c7a7322759c5cf58aaa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/278833">What are the challenges of completing the naval architecture for vessels of different sizes?The challenges remain consistent whether you are working on a 24-metre or a 50m+ vessel. The process can be described as a balancing act between managing the client’s needs and expectations and the requirements of what I call ‘the design spiral,’ in which each adjustment you make prompts a reevaluation. Tweaking the hull shape or compressing the deck dimensions can improve performance or stability, whilst still maintaining the desired space on board. Collaboration is crucial, and so we work closely with highly experienced shipyards, designers and brokers.We are a full-service company at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, so our job doesn’t end when the naval architecture is finished – we are usually responsible for all of the other work which comes with building a yacht, from construction drawing, to designing the engine room, integrating systems, engineering and much more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254053/image/large-99b69c5688fa683870b8faac4ed9e332.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254053">Do you find it harder to do the engineering for a 50m+ yacht than a smaller vessel? &nbsp;In terms of engineering, it's not necessarily more difficult, but it does involve significantly more work. For a 30-metre yacht, you might construct it in 4-5 sections, including the hull. In contrast, with a larger project, like a 50-60m+ vessel, this could involve building in up to 20 sections. Twice the length can mean 3 or 4 times more volume.&nbsp;Furthermore, ensuring structural fire safety also involves planning for compartmentalisation and longitudinal strength as the rules and regulations are more comprehensive. Structurally, larger vessels introduce more factors that influence the scantlings; this is one of the most important and challenging tasks found within the entire structural design process.&nbsp;Personally, I find smaller projects more enjoyable; they progress faster, provide earlier results and often have more involved owners within the whole build process. However, the challenges can be more limited. In contrast, working on 50m+ projects entails a lengthier and more complex process, requiring a comprehensive overview and attention to detail from all angles.At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, our strength lies in our team's ability to effectively manage multiple smaller projects concurrently while still successfully handling larger, more complex projects.What are the challenges of completing the exterior design for yachts of different sizes?The relationship between the exterior designer and the naval architect is very close during a project. Within <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, we have several exterior designers on the team who also have backgrounds as naval architects. In such cases, the balance between achieving aesthetically pleasing and feasible designs is almost inherently maintained. Considering the design from two perspectives—both aesthetic and technical—allows us to achieve a more holistic approach to the overall design.On a larger vessel, it's easier to conceal certain design elements, making adjustments on the technical side less noticeable. Our brief was for a fuel-economic hull with good initial stability and high seaworthiness, ideal for owners who wanted to take on long passages in comfort. Despite the challenges of Covid-19 meaning we had to work remotely, it was an excellent cooperation between us, the yard and the exterior designer.Over the years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. Holterman Shipyard have unveiled a new 24m in-build Xtreme 78 Flybridge yacht to its Xtreme series.
