Dutch yacht builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> has declared bankruptcy. The shipyard, which has operated for nearly three decades, has faced significant financial challenges in recent years, with work halting on-site in Meppel for several weeks.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320173/image/large-53f349aa96150965369c15b57ac55c92.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320173"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> filed for bankruptcy after the shipyard’s sheds were emptied, leaving no boats in production. Curator Rienk de Vries confirmed to local news publications that the bankruptcy process is still in its early stages, with the potential for an acquisition still in place.&nbsp;"The bankruptcy is still fresh. The oil slick is not that big yet, it still has to spread, but there does seem to be interest," he noted, indicating that there are potential candidates interested in a takeover, with hopes to retain as many employees as possible.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560">Holterman Shipyard</a> currently employs fourteen individuals, all of whom are now facing uncertainty after work ground to a halt due to a lack of new orders. It is also believed that a rise in pricing of aluminium had contributed towards the shipyard’s financial difficulties, leading to mounting losses.“The director indicated that orders were declining. Partly due to rising prices of light metals such as aluminium, losses started to mount from 2022. The orders that were needed to fill the gaps did not materialise. And yes, then it is over quickly,” said De Vries.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Holterman Shipyard</a> was originally founded by Johannes Holterman in 1994, and later handed over to his son Robbert in the late 1990s. The company experienced financial difficulties before, declaring bankruptcy in 2012, but managed a successful restart the following year.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> made headlines in 2022 when they launched their 32.65-metre X-treme 105 motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, which featured a revolutionary integrated pool, which had the ability to rise and fall to fill with seawater.&nbsp;SuperYacht Times has reached out to both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> and Rienk de Vries for further comment, but has yet to receive a response at the time of publication.

The shipyard in Mepple, the Netherlands recently welcomed the J-Class sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/384" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hanuman42.1m (138'1&quot;)Royal Huisman2009">Hanuman</a> for a refit over the coming months, with works including moving deck hardware to replacing interior elements, installing new air conditioning and fridge-freezer systems, upgrading the hydraulic system and painting the underwater body and topsides.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320173/image/large-53f349aa96150965369c15b57ac55c92.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320173">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman</a> may mainly be known for its new-build motor yachts but it has carried out refit works in the past both on its own models and on those built elsewhere,” confirms Tim Wedzinga, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman</a>’s Refit Manager. “While the refit operation has in the past been low-key, we are able to draw on a talented in-house team of engineers, carpenters, craftsmen and project managers, and we take a straight-line approach to communication between the owner’s and the shipyard’s teams. With the team currently working on 19 different projects between 25-70 metres in both steel and aluminium, there is plenty to discuss.How did you start working for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> offered me a job as soon as I finished my studies in naval architecture, and this was my first contact with the yachting world. I had no idea what to expect, but it has certainly not disappointed me over the past 19 years, during 11 of which I have been co-owner, and I am proud to have worked on a such a huge range of fantastic projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/278833/image/large-5d56275f56fb7c7a7322759c5cf58aaa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/278833">What are the challenges of completing the naval architecture for vessels of different sizes?The challenges remain consistent whether you are working on a 24-metre or a 50m+ vessel. The process can be described as a balancing act between managing the client’s needs and expectations and the requirements of what I call ‘the design spiral,’ in which each adjustment you make prompts a reevaluation. Tweaking the hull shape or compressing the deck dimensions can improve performance or stability, whilst still maintaining the desired space on board. Collaboration is crucial, and so we work closely with highly experienced shipyards, designers and brokers.We are a full-service company at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, so our job doesn’t end when the naval architecture is finished – we are usually responsible for all of the other work which comes with building a yacht, from construction drawing, to designing the engine room, integrating systems, engineering and much more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254053/image/large-99b69c5688fa683870b8faac4ed9e332.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254053">Do you find it harder to do the engineering for a 50m+ yacht than a smaller vessel? &nbsp;In terms of engineering, it's not necessarily more difficult, but it does involve significantly more work. For a 30-metre yacht, you might construct it in 4-5 sections, including the hull. In contrast, with a larger project, like a 50-60m+ vessel, this could involve building in up to 20 sections. Twice the length can mean 3 or 4 times more volume.&nbsp;Furthermore, ensuring structural fire safety also involves planning for compartmentalisation and longitudinal strength as the rules and regulations are more comprehensive. Structurally, larger vessels introduce more factors that influence the scantlings; this is one of the most important and challenging tasks found within the entire structural design process.&nbsp;Personally, I find smaller projects more enjoyable; they progress faster, provide earlier results and often have more involved owners within the whole build process. However, the challenges can be more limited. In contrast, working on 50m+ projects entails a lengthier and more complex process, requiring a comprehensive overview and attention to detail from all angles.At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, our strength lies in our team's ability to effectively manage multiple smaller projects concurrently while still successfully handling larger, more complex projects.What are the challenges of completing the exterior design for yachts of different sizes?The relationship between the exterior designer and the naval architect is very close during a project. Within <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, we have several exterior designers on the team who also have backgrounds as naval architects. In such cases, the balance between achieving aesthetically pleasing and feasible designs is almost inherently maintained. Considering the design from two perspectives—both aesthetic and technical—allows us to achieve a more holistic approach to the overall design.On a larger vessel, it's easier to conceal certain design elements, making adjustments on the technical side less noticeable. Our brief was for a fuel-economic hull with good initial stability and high seaworthiness, ideal for owners who wanted to take on long passages in comfort. Changes in yachting are notoriously glacial – until last year. This all had to be squeezed into a 32.65-metre platform. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> was the studio behind stylish, muscular and very attractive exterior design. But the big question, though: will it work? And who better to put the challenge to than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?&nbsp;“We’re not afraid of a challenge,” Casper Marelis, Naval Architect &amp; Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, told SuperYacht Times. “But this really was a major one, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot from this project.” The biggest learning curve, not only for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> but for the industry, was engineering a system that could deploy and retrieve a large tender, without the use of a crane. It was a major undertaking – and one that has never been done before. It also came with an added benefit: ease of boarding for both crew and guests. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255481/image/large-96bbf6726a378615aad31a2d2b201ba5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255481"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> features a traditional motor yacht hull, but from amidships, her long aft is divided between two hulls, with the central divide making space for the tender lift that includes a lengthy pool. The platform can be lowered, in between the two hulls collecting seawater and then raised again, to create a pool. The maximum depth of the pool is 6-foot but it can be completely customised for when the younger members of the family are enjoying a swim. When underway the pool floor is hydraulically lifted, turning the aft deck into a wide, flat multi-functional space.“Compared to a ‘normal’ catamaran hull the deck above/between the two hulls on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> which normally absorbs the forces created by waves is missing,” Marelis explained. “So this means theoretically the PS hull can move up and the SB hull can move down. These forces all transfer to the connection point to the monohull instead of the deck above. An extensive ‘Finite Elements Method’ short FEM calculation made it possible to analyse these forces and the resulting tensions in the structure and made it possible to strengthen the problem areas very precisely. To give you an example, there are parts which had to be 40mm thick high tensile steel while without the fold down platform the thickness could be 5mm normal steel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255480/image/large-5b3817c529eabb79a5ea8c0d139db18c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255480"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> conducted rigorous FEM analysis of the total hull construction very early on in the process, and in direct conversation with classification society and flag state. Even though this was novel, the studio was determined to actualise the owner’s wishes. Coincidently, after devising a method for the system to raise and lower, the pool was relatively easy to engineer.&nbsp;“The forces on the system depend on how much of a closed volume (air) must be pushed underwater. So we made the structure of the platform hollow above the waterline to minimise this volume. This left a big ‘empty space’ which could also house a pool. This can fill up while the system lowers. And although almost 14 tonnes of water has to be lifted afterwards, the closed volume of the platform will push this extra weight upwards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Naturally though, such a radical design was to cause waves throughout the vessel and more challenges arose, especially after a last-minute request to add a garage at midships: where to place the engine room?“With the last minute change it meant that all the equipment moved aft, but also the structural parts like the engine seating. This meant a lot of extra weight in the aft ship for which the hull form had to be adapted. More weight in the multihull arms also meant more forces and vibrations which had to be accounted for,” Marelis said. “Due to the addition of a tender garage the multihull arms turned into the engine rooms. This meant splitting the engine rooms, so doubling up on multiple systems while the space got smaller. But this also meant moving the propshafts outboard which has a negative effect on flow towards the propeller. To have a proper water flow towards the propellers steering nozzles were added.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255484/image/large-a138625aca462766f27a269e9675b4d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255484">The FEM calculation was an integral part of the aft section of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, but for the forward section was treated as normal. This helps reduce lead time as it “made it possible to start building the forward section already while a lot more engineering time was created to be spent on the difficult aft ship section.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255482/image/large-7a7c182b4234e98892340a113c0b5306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255482">But the aft deck is just one part of the story. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> also has a large enclosed tender garage, accommodation for 10 guests, and a dedicated crew apartment – all within a 200 GT package.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> truly defies the impossible, and when pressed if <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> is looking at other ways to revolutionise yacht design, Marelis said: “We are up to the challenge for sure, we try to implement new ideas in our own concepts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55323" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Designing with Diana: Lifting the lid on the 70m superyacht design Project Kaizen (2022-06-29 15:00:00 +0200)">Kaizen</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/50287" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design and Exmar Yachting unveil new hydrogen superyacht concept: Blue Angel (2019-09-05 11:00:00 +0200)">Blue Angel</a> for instance. Holterman Shipyard has announced that the 33m motor yacht Lady Fleur has been delivered to her owners.

The first 23.65-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman</a> X-treme 78 Sport yacht has been &nbsp;launched from the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> facility in Meppel, Netherlands.
