Since then the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman</a> X-treme brand has continued to make serious waves in the industry, and the Netherlands-based shipyard has continued to build on this success.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259712/image/large-e981dbd4f1146ae26a5a877286089ea0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259712"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11231" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miramar23.65m (77'7&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Miramar</a> is the first model in the X-treme 78 Sport series and was inspired by the first 32.65-metre X-treme 105 yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>. The X-treme 105 features a revolutionary tender dock that doubles as a pool, and it was this that put <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Yachts</a> on the map, with many in the industry astonished at the innovative design. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259713/image/large-374f6d55ec84133f348a6d162f0945de.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259713">Although <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11231" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miramar23.65m (77'7&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Miramar</a>’s length prohibits the inclusion of an aft tender bay/pool, all other assets of the X-treme line remain pretty much the same. “The design has struck a chord because it incorporates both sturdiness and elegance,” said <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Yachts</a>’ General Director Herman Timmerman. “The X-treme philosophy attracts people who appreciate our down-to-earth approach and understand that creating something new takes time, effort and imagination.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259714/image/large-7b79ac2fda3d3bb84da24cb6493a8938.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259714"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Yachts</a> worked closely with specialised Dutch subcontractors and partners on the X-treme range, with partners including <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6693" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="KB Alubouw (Company)">KB Alubouw</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4360" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sea Level – Amsterdam (Company)">Sea Level</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11231" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miramar23.65m (77'7&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Miramar</a> features exterior design and naval architecture by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> which penned her with a sleek and smooth profile and long continuous glass panels for unprecedented views.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259682/image/large-5e36ba41d5b9a3641cf1ce23fd9b75ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259682">Designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel</a> is responsible for the design of all three yachts in the X-treme range including the 16.67-metre X-treme 54, the X-treme 78 and the X-treme 105. “I based the exterior profile for all three on the same DNA and design principles,” commented <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259689/image/large-191325f54e6eb718dcc455cc4b890eff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259689">“After receiving the order for the first X-treme 54, the challenge was to capture the essence of<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">&nbsp;Lady Fleur</a> in a yacht almost half the size. Her spacious saloon is adorned with large sofas and a dining area, with the galley placed to the aft of the lounge. The shipyard is also building the first X-treme 60 yacht with a longer swim platform, larger lower deck portholes and long glass sections in the hull, similar to the X-treme 78.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259680/image/large-e67aa929878c2094f5aa02012965169b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259680">A great deal of development work is also proceeding on an all-aluminium 95-footer (29-metre) yacht that will have a powerful propulsion system around the 5,000 horsepower mark and be capable of 28 knots, while retaining low fuel consumption levels.

Miramar: A first look onboard the first 24m Holterman X-treme 78 Sport yacht

Changes in yachting are notoriously glacial – until last year. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> delivered its 32.65-metre superyacht X-treme 105, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, it was quite literally the ‘talk of the town’, and when she debuted at <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> the quay was awash with amazement. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> is radically practical and it’s easy to pass her off as a traditional monohull with a large aft deck for tender storage; but behind her taut muscular design is an unusual and complex piece of engineering: a novel aft deck that can be hydraulically lowered below the waterline to safely launch and retrieve a large tender. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255483/image/large-afea7a6a5101cf22d6d8ec50c7f91540.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255483">The seed of inspiration was sown by her owners, who wanted a multipurpose aft deck: tender storage, a deep but safe swimming pool for their grandchildren, and somewhere to host intimate dinner parties. This all had to be squeezed into a 32.65-metre platform. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> was the studio behind stylish, muscular and very attractive exterior design. But the big question, though: will it work? And who better to put the challenge to than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?&nbsp;“We’re not afraid of a challenge,” Casper Marelis, Naval Architect &amp; Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, told SuperYacht Times. “But this really was a major one, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot from this project.” The biggest learning curve, not only for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> but for the industry, was engineering a system that could deploy and retrieve a large tender, without the use of a crane. It was a major undertaking – and one that has never been done before. It also came with an added benefit: ease of boarding for both crew and guests. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255481/image/large-96bbf6726a378615aad31a2d2b201ba5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255481"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> features a traditional motor yacht hull, but from amidships, her long aft is divided between two hulls, with the central divide making space for the tender lift that includes a lengthy pool. The platform can be lowered, in between the two hulls collecting seawater and then raised again, to create a pool. The maximum depth of the pool is 6-foot but it can be completely customised for when the younger members of the family are enjoying a swim. When underway the pool floor is hydraulically lifted, turning the aft deck into a wide, flat multi-functional space.“Compared to a ‘normal’ catamaran hull the deck above/between the two hulls on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> which normally absorbs the forces created by waves is missing,” Marelis explained. “So this means theoretically the PS hull can move up and the SB hull can move down. These forces all transfer to the connection point to the monohull instead of the deck above. An extensive ‘Finite Elements Method’ short FEM calculation made it possible to analyse these forces and the resulting tensions in the structure and made it possible to strengthen the problem areas very precisely. To give you an example, there are parts which had to be 40mm thick high tensile steel while without the fold down platform the thickness could be 5mm normal steel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255480/image/large-5b3817c529eabb79a5ea8c0d139db18c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255480"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> conducted rigorous FEM analysis of the total hull construction very early on in the process, and in direct conversation with classification society and flag state. Even though this was novel, the studio was determined to actualise the owner’s wishes. Coincidently, after devising a method for the system to raise and lower, the pool was relatively easy to engineer.&nbsp;“The forces on the system depend on how much of a closed volume (air) must be pushed underwater. So we made the structure of the platform hollow above the waterline to minimise this volume. This left a big ‘empty space’ which could also house a pool. This can fill up while the system lowers. And although almost 14 tonnes of water has to be lifted afterwards, the closed volume of the platform will push this extra weight upwards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Naturally though, such a radical design was to cause waves throughout the vessel and more challenges arose, especially after a last-minute request to add a garage at midships: where to place the engine room?“With the last minute change it meant that all the equipment moved aft, but also the structural parts like the engine seating. This meant a lot of extra weight in the aft ship for which the hull form had to be adapted. More weight in the multihull arms also meant more forces and vibrations which had to be accounted for,” Marelis said. “Due to the addition of a tender garage the multihull arms turned into the engine rooms. This meant splitting the engine rooms, so doubling up on multiple systems while the space got smaller. But this also meant moving the propshafts outboard which has a negative effect on flow towards the propeller. To have a proper water flow towards the propellers steering nozzles were added.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255484/image/large-a138625aca462766f27a269e9675b4d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255484">The FEM calculation was an integral part of the aft section of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, but for the forward section was treated as normal. This helps reduce lead time as it “made it possible to start building the forward section already while a lot more engineering time was created to be spent on the difficult aft ship section.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255482/image/large-7a7c182b4234e98892340a113c0b5306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255482">But the aft deck is just one part of the story. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> also has a large enclosed tender garage, accommodation for 10 guests, and a dedicated crew apartment – all within a 200 GT package.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> truly defies the impossible, and when pressed if <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> is looking at other ways to revolutionise yacht design, Marelis said: “We are up to the challenge for sure, we try to implement new ideas in our own concepts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55323" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Designing with Diana: Lifting the lid on the 70m superyacht design Project Kaizen (2022-06-29 15:00:00 +0200)">Kaizen</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/50287" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design and Exmar Yachting unveil new hydrogen superyacht concept: Blue Angel (2019-09-05 11:00:00 +0200)">Blue Angel</a> for instance. Two yacht owners and friends surfing the market were struggling to find what they wanted. A scenario not unheard of, but one that was definitely resolved in a unique way. Rather than continuing the hunt for the perfect superyacht, they founded their own company to suit their needs: X-treme Yachts by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/116448/image/large-69388358ca3427558b9982d26369bbe9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/116448">Having brought in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> for the architectural requirements, X-treme Yachts finalised the custom design with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> and <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/x-105-yacht" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">made a start on the build</a>. The Dutch yard has since received the hull and has already begun equipping her with well-thought-out features ahead of her upcoming 2021 completion date. &nbsp;With the build taking shape, the team realised that the potential of the design features screamed for more than a one-off project – and the X-treme range is the result. Here, X-treme Yachts share more about their vision to create yachts that aren’t determined by length, but by their extreme capabilities. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/116447/image/large-12314febb1dc9f91f911817f66322a03.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/116447">“Our idea of the X-105 design is to gather a wide variety of features in a relatively small yacht,” explain the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman</a>. “If we add up these features, you will immediately understand that there is currently no other ship on the market like her.”One of the most noticeable features of the yacht’s exterior is the aft deck which, thanks to its wet-launch system, can carry a 10-meter RIB-tender. “Having your tender on deck means that towing or shadow sailing with additional crew is obsolete,” &nbsp;the team pointed out. “For longer journeys, you can take out the 33-foot tender for 12 guests in a matter of 15 minutes from the deck.” The same deck can convert into a swimming pool with a jetstream function and adjustable floor. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186449/image/large-af1b838d83fa0ef29ada2c612f847d59.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186449">When coming back on board after a day playing out on the water, guests can make their way up to the 65-square-metre flybridge for sunbathing, drinking by the bar or dining. The same guests can then retire to the five staterooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. The crew of four are allocated two ensuite cabins.“As experienced yacht owners, we live with the awareness that everything technical on a boat has a possibility of failure,” state the team. “In many cases, failures of the technical kind will lead to interruption of enjoying the pleasure a yacht should offer its owner.” The solution? First, the team chose alternative decking material to save 2.5-cubic-metres of teak: “To give an impression of the environmental effect of teak: 10,000-square-metres of teak forest produces only 60-cubic-meters of SG 7-teak for teak decking. This takes 50 years to grow,” they explain.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177080/image/large-23849fe7a16d8a8f5f8206a57a81463c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177080">Reductions were also made in the yacht’s exhausts, as the hull shape has been designed with limited drag and the ability to reach 15 knots with only twin 750hp engines. “Since we prioritise range over speed, we have designed the hull in a way so it will only take 15% of its installed power to reach the cruising speed of 9 knots. This will give the X-105 a range of 2,400 nautical miles,” they add. Additionally, the X-105 will be equipped with a wet launch system suitable for a 10-metre RIB, which features an integrated five-metre swimming pool with a moveable bottom that allows for the depth to be adjusted.The in-build X-105 yacht will accommodate guests in four double staterooms located on the lower deck, all of which will feature ensuite facilities.
