<img src="https://d3w3pid64ak8v.cloudfront.net/photo/167049/image/large-c3bc8e6c10d1f4a819bc5a618882b210.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167049">First launched in 1995 as the Japanese Fisheries training ship Wakachiba, the explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dr. No36.71m (120'5&quot;)Narasaki Shipbuilding1995">Dr No</a> underwent major changes under her first yacht owner, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/45982" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Original owner of Maltese Falcon, Tom Perkins, passes away (2016-06-10 11:10:00 +0200)">Tom Perkins</a>, who acquired the vessel in 2011 as known as Blue Hunter at the time. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/287" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="HYS Yachts (Company)">HYS Yachts</a> in the Philippines converted the vessel into a functional luxury yacht while keeping all the qualities that made her such a competent ocean cruiser. Accommodation for up to eight guests was created as well as a fully-equipped diving room and storage all around the yacht for longer voyages. Now operating under new ownership, here she is seen arriving in London on the River Thames last week.

In 2012 HYS Yachts in the Philippines bought the vessel and work on transforming the vessel started in 2013. She was delivered to her owner in 2015 and has been cruising the Pacific since and reaching Mediterranean waters for the first time this summer. Cklass Nautique in Vancouver

Currently spending time in the city of Vancouver is the 45-metre refitted motor yacht Cklass Nautique. Built in 1992 and has served most of her life as a Japanese fishery patrol vessel named Sakea Maru, the motor yacht we see today is vastly different from her original shape. In 2012 HYS Yachts in the Philippines bought the vessel and work started on the project in 2013. She was delivered to her owner in 2015 and has been cruising the Pacific since. Ark Angel in Subic Bay, Phillipines

Seen here earlier this week in Subic Bay in the Philippines is the transformed luxury superyacht Ark Angel. The 55-metre vessel started a grand refit project in the country in 2009 that was carried out by HYS Yachts. Known formerly as Galapagos, the yacht’s superstructure, deck spaces, and interior spaces were completely altered into the profile we see today. In 2015 she became the first yacht in the region to have her complete exterior foil-wrapped in her trademark crisp white and royal green shades.

The 55m Ark Angel in Subic Bay

The Thailand Yacht Show will open its doors in Phuket in just three days’ time. Hosted from the 15th to 18th December at the Ao Po Grand Marina - following the inaugural edition of the event earlier this year in February - this second edition of the show will see a wide variety of yachts on display, the largest being the 90 metre Cassens-Werft built Lauren L.

Other notable yachts on display include the 60 metre Feadship superyacht Paraffin, the 51 metre HYS-built Northern Sun, and the 41 metre Alloy Yachts superyacht Destination. A fitting centerpiece to the exhibition, the Show will also display several of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej's own self-built sailing boats, a tribute to the late leader’s passion for the sport of dinghy racing.

 

Sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and the Marine Department, organisers state that the continuous progression of the show is demonstrative of their commitment to establish Thailand as the ‘marine hub of Asia’. “We are confident that the Yacht Show will help boost Thailand’s tourism industry, which in turn will translate into direct economic benefits for related local businesses - driving job creation, while distributing sustainable income and improving local infrastructure too,” commented Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sport.

“Promoting marine tourism is one of our major goals for 2017 as part of the strategy to promote Thailand as a Quality Leisure Destination,” continued Nappadon Pakprot, the Tourism Authority of Thailand Deputy Governor. “We expect the event will contribute to boost the number of yachts visiting Thailand to at least 2,500 yachts in 2017 to generate approximately 7,500 million THB into our economy and related businesses.”

Thailand Yacht Show kicks off this week

Cklass’s history dates back to 1992 when she started life out as a fishery patrol vessel for the Japanese Government named Sakea Maru. She has since been transformed from her previous state as a rugged ocean going vessel into a luxury explorer superyacht by Philippines-based shipyard HYS Yachts. Her long range capabilities have been used as a platform to create luxury blue water expedition cruiser.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156722/image/large-f672bf6faa59ef43374e114b81f8244a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156722"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156723/image/large-a57f05700684beaac9256982fdf80ffb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156723">After the vessels retirement from state service in 2011, HYS purchased the vessel in 2012 and began with developing a conceptual design that would allow a potential client to be involved in a well organized and extensively planned refit project. One such client expressed his interest in the yard and work subsequently started in spring 2013.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156724/image/large-fa3d662ee82b456d16c80c151aad3c4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156724"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156725/image/large-4a344588ab2b4c328da75f23723b715f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156725">The vessel was stripped down to only reveal the hull, having removed the entire superstructure. A new superstructure was constructed using aluminium to keep top weight to a minimum, which would result in greater stability at sea. All auxiliary equipment was replaced in the engine room, leaving only the main engines and propulsion system in place.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156726/image/large-a42f2ecad4f2864b2c465bb4a43ec8f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156726"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156727/image/large-0d6af11a8e5310d8fc1383c9ae9d9960.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156727">As part of the design, her narrow hull was lengthened and fitted with bow and stern thrusters as well as zero speed stabilisers to be used underway or at anchor. Along with these underwater works, all through hull fittings were replaced and new underwater lights installed before any of the deck work could begin.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156728/image/large-373564472f9abac04ccbd9420f17b27d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156728">What followed was the installation of the new aluminium deckhouses, fairing and painting of the steel hull and the running of new cabling that would serve the on board entertainment systems and navigation. Carpenters could then get to work on stalling the custom interior. One deck below, on the 80 sqm main deck aft, is where Cklass houses her two tenders. The conversion of 45m superyacht Cklass

The Philippines based shipyard HYS Yachts has recently revealed four new Explorer superyacht designs. Measuring 43 metres in length, the owner has the opportunity to choose one of the designs to be built upon a Japanese government ice strengthened hull.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153571/image/large-29c351f3de6fec8c552ea9dfbe1a818f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153571">The variations are as follows; - Optimus, featuring an aft beach club with seating, bar, massage and gym facilities - Thalassa, with space for one 8 metre unlimited air draft tender and other toys - Pontus, with space for dual 8 metre unlimited air draft tenders - Aether, which can also handle two 7 metre low-profile tenders as well as a helideck capable of landing a 2 ton helicopter.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153572/image/large-40f6211a2af35709ca57a1c6eb7eacaf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153572">The client will also have the ability to fully customise the project, and new features will include a zero speed stabilizer system, dynamic positioning capability, an 8,000 NM range, and more.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153573/image/large-2485de8345da5c80084e77f4a0778640.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153573">HYS have stressed to the industry that these projects will not be a typical conversion, but “Highbred” yacht projects. “Unlike typical conversions”, HYS Naval Architect Simon Jupe explains, “we aren’t just rearranging existing spaces of an existing vessel. HYS Yachts announce new Explorer project

The Philippines based HYS Yachts are breaking new ground in the Asian region by being the first to foil wrap the full exterior of the 54.96 metre superyacht Ark Angel (ex Taishu Maru; Tiara II; Galapagos). Built by the Japanese shipyard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1979, she is the largest vessel to be wrapped in Asia.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/153066/image/large-5e7e4c402714ddf4285c4fe3ccf7e6c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153066" class="legacy">Foil wrapping enables a special type of ‘shrink’ film to be semi-permanently grafted to prepared surfaces of virtually any size or shape. HYS President Mark Prangnell comments, “The beauty of this type of application is that it’s so much faster and more cost-effective than traditional painting methods. We wrapped the entire hull and superstructure of Ark Angel in just two weeks and for about half the cost of applying a typical painted finish.”Prangnell notes that painting the same surface area would have taken approximately 3 months. He continues, “We see this technology as the next step in exterior yacht finishing. Wrapping superyacht Ark Angel

The Philippines based shipyard HYS Yachts has announced that the 45 metre explorer superyacht Cklass will attend seatrials in just a few weeks time. Amongst the many features on board is a penthouse owner's suite, a crow's nest, a helideck which doubles as an outdoor entertainment platform, a tender deck complete with twin 6.5 metre tenders and a four-deck guest elevator.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152930/image/large-1e802302bf1254b0c0a97b859761590a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152930">HYS President Mark Prangnell comments on the yacht, saying, “Cklass is as close as you can get to a new build without the price tag. What’s important to note about this project is that this isn’t a mere conversion as the yachting industry commonly understands the term; this project is more accurately described as a ‘Highbred’ yacht. Our Highbred construction model which we initiated with Cklass is much more efficient to build while affording the owner greater leeway in customizing the internal/external arrangement to their satisfaction.”HYS Naval Architect Simon Jupe explains the Highbred concept further. He says, “A typical yacht conversion essentially involves physically altering existing spaces within a vessel. Using a ‘Highbred’ project workflow, the only items we retain from the original vessel is the meticulously maintained Japanese Government hull and prime mover systems. Everything else - from deckhouse construction to exterior and interior fit-out to hotel services and all supporting equipment - is all brand new and as-per the owner’s requirement.”Cklass accommodates her guests over five cabins, including an opulent owner’s suite. The owner has decided to sell her immediately upon completion, and will order an 80 metre superyacht from the same shipyard. “Wow… is that… was that… really the Galapagos?” is a question yacht spotters throughout the Philippines are continually asking. All existing VIP and guest cabins have also been thoroughly redecorated and a new VIP cabin with en-suite bathroom was constructed from the spaces previously used by the ship’s office and gymnasium. Major engineering improvements include a uniquely styled nav/com mast which gracefully arcs over the forward section of the sun deck, a custom manufactured wet exhaust system, and a new noise and vibration dampening prop.
