SuperYacht Times takes a look at some of the yachts attending the 2025 edition of PIBS, where members of our team will be present.

On the market with Sean McCarter of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>, an agreement has been made for the construction of hull 1 through to 5.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231506/image/large-a5a7b23d9ec54dbe28bd587363d91354.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231506">The collaboration combines Infiniti Yachts cutting edge design and technology with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="McConaghy Boats (Company)">McConaghy Boats</a> high-performance composite yacht construction. The Infiniti 105 yacht features a sleek and aerodynamic design, with advanced hull technology, developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5516" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Infiniti Yachts (Company)">Infiniti Yachts</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302304/image/large-ce7f60c0a3209350555612326aa31b81.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302304">The Infiniti 105 yacht boasts a sleek glass superstructure, echoing the curves of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5516" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Infiniti Yachts (Company)">Infiniti Design</a>. Her main saloon seating is positioned beneath this, allowing for a natural flow of light in her interior spaces.This arrangement also eradicates the traditional corridor that leads through a saloon and creates a more dynamic and social space. The Infiniti 105 yacht can accommodate up to six guests in three well-appointed staterooms.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231509/image/large-3d6eacd1db243b870cb743bf9fa71e30.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231509">Several layout options are available, with the owner able to adapt the final design to suit their needs. Various seating options are available in the cockpit, to best suit how the owner spends their time onboard, with one more suited to cruising, and the other offering more open space for ease of crew movement when competing.The Infiniti 105 yacht is constructed using pre-preg carbon fibre, with a combination of foam and Nomex cores cured under vacuum to ensure a lightweight, stiff structure. There is the option of a hydraulic lifting keel to further improve performance and allow for access into shallower anchorages and ports. The draft range is between 5.6-metres and 3.6-metres, although this could be increased for a more performance-orientated evolution.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231511/image/large-3e8688d17341e17ab5719b63619057c8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231511">The Infiniti 105 yacht has been developed from the drawing boards of the award-winning <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a>, and draws upon her comfortable design and impressive performance, delivered by Dynamic Stability Systems (DSS) technology.The DSS foil of the Infiniti 105 yacht has been developed to reduce heeling by as much as 30 percent, with pitching reduced by over 40 percent. This lowers the risk of seasickness and creates a more comfortable and stable environment for guests onboard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231510/image/large-d0140996dbf3d936686946a70c15147a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231510">The DSS foil is operated by controls at the helm station, using proven and reliable systems. When mooring the yacht in a busy harbour, the foil does not impinge on the space required to berth, and when sailing, it is deployed whenever needed to increase comfort and performance. Typical heeling angles when using the DSS foil would be 12-15 degrees when reaching and less than 20 degrees when sailing upwind.There are two bow options available for the Infiniti 105 yacht, a race-orientated reverse bow with a progressive feel, and a more traditional, vertical bow. Her sheer lines have also been adjusted, which have been achieved using the same mold tooling, therefore eliminating the need for the client to change the whole platform.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302306/image/large-309bec112a44eb2a39bcdb90411ce052.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302306">“The Infiniti 105 delivers a step change in performance and comfort to the sailing superyacht world,” explained Infiiniti Yachts. “She offers superyacht style with extraordinary performance.”

When an experienced and passionate owner was looking to build a daring new round-the-world super sailing yacht, he needed a builder that could match his level of innovation and boundary-pushing ideas. Enter, Baltic Yachts. Sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> is the latest in the Finnish builder’s high-tech fleet of super cruisers and follows in the footsteps of greats such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visione44.84m (147'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2002">Visione</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetaios</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Gin VI53.9m (176'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2017">Pink Gin VI</a> – but with one big exception: this is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic’s</a> first zero-emission 100ft+ project, leading the way in a new generation of environmentally conscious and ocean-friendly superyachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175395/image/large-ad9cc7647d0ed021b5f6d159c89c56eb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175395">“There is a lot of innovation onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a>,” says Henry Hawkins, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic’s</a> Executive Vice President, “all of which was client-driven.” Synonymous with pioneering discoveries in the field of super sailing yachts, Baltic was already up to speed with everything on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova’s</a>&nbsp;owner’s ambitious wish-list. “There was nothing really unheard of for us being proposed in the brief, but in terms of taking things from investigation to implementation, a lot of the credit can got to the client.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175430/image/large-e4e5c4127aa528ef1df51ca1f99af1d8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175430"><iframe width="758" height="427" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GAX8IsfjtPA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe>Two of these primary innovations Hawkins refers to are the power regeneration system that can theoretically provide an endless amount of green energy for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> to consume, and the Dynamic Stability System (DSS) foil, developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5516" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Infiniti Yachts (Company)">Infiniti Yachts</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175370/image/large-ac5ed78323a2a2b142480b1be3ab056f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175370">The DSS has proved highly effective in smaller vessels but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a> is the first superyacht builder to incorporte this technology into a luxury yacht of this size. The nine-metre-long foil is mounted inside the hull below the waterline and extends outward from either side to deliver improved performance but with stability as its main purpose. “<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175392/image/large-30bdcb1d155d63a64774f8b8f551f425.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175392">In general terms, the DSS foil hugely decreases the heeling and pitching motions while underway,” Hawkins explains “What would be an impossible sit-down lunch under normal sailing conditions, now becomes a more manageable affair at sea, especially on bigger yachts such as this with its large deck spaces. It’s a long way from the top to the bottom at a heel angle of 20-22 degrees, so for that angle to be reduced by 10-12 degrees makes a massive difference.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175373/image/large-0bb1951eb0e57b151234ba5db2957e1b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175373">From a design perspective, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> had to be so much more than just an eco-friendly experiment. Having owned several boats in the past from yards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor's Swan (Company)">Nautor’s Swa</a>n and even <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova’s</a>owner was looking for a completely new experience with his new boat. Simplicity, functionality, privacy and above all, comfort was what would become the common threads that connect every part of the yacht. “He had a dream of circumnavigating the world with this boat,” explains designer Lucio Micheletti, “and the project was born with this sole intention in mi<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103588/image/large-160f6c1c90119076bfaf0ccdad0c1ef2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103588"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175358/image/large-70b4e7c2d48e3a6d0b6bd7972138210b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175358">Subsequently, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Micheletti + Partners (Company)">Micheletti + Partners</a> designed a modern craft inspired by the automotive world as a home-away-from-home with a functional living experience at its centre. A distinctive deckhouse wing appears to be floating effortlessly on top of a glass and wooden base - materials that were carried through to the fluid and airy interior. “We worked on the total wellbeing of the passengers, trying to evaluate every aesthetic, from acoustics to lighting. We opened a dialogue between life on board and the surrounding sea,” says Micheletti.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175439/image/large-37c6e79becc46865d0c83d0ca7524ec5.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175439"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175446/image/large-e79aa3528750ad3c1a3978f14f6c27f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175446">RestoreFor the Milan-based Micheletti, the project’s design was a highly personal journey. “I met the owner through this project and I found a very knowledgeable person, a lover of art and life at sea,” he recalls. “The true art of a yacht project lies in resonating with the owner, and we succeeded in creating a space where he can find a point of reference each time he returns to the boat. A place where he can recognise himself and that represents his personality.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175418/image/large-47fcbbde93a320a790bb07a399068702.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175418"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175444/image/large-673df69edaec1bda8585bc941b1fc7f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175444">Teak from the outside has been carried through as a central theme to the interior where it is used in various applications, from matte-finished flooring to high-gloss handrails. The large dinette and lounge area inside the deckhouse form the social heart of the yacht and transforms into a trendy and elegant relaxation area at night with enhanced mood lighting and an unobstructed view through the glazed windows that wrap around the structure.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103584/image/large-f161231990138913f7cbacd0f7e04af2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103584"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175445/image/large-1a8fe36bca54136d5ee6264a0130e9c5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175445">Below deck, a three-cabin layout provides accommodation for up to six guests, culminating in the 65-square-metre full-beam master suite that is placed amidships. The suite features a unique 'gimbal bed' which contains a gyro-like device that stabilises the bed against the motion of the sea for maximum comfort, and the space is finished with a private lounge and study, a sauna and a hidden treadmill.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103585/image/large-804edf4437f03399b049916a5f95e37d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103585"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175448/image/large-af82080d7834e21ebe353470b49c49a6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175448">Recharge<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> is the first electrically-driven sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> has built and the first with regeneration capacity that could effectively deliver a zero-emissions cruising experience. “People’s desire to become more aware of the environment and their footprint on the planet is a key point of focus for us,” says Hawkins. While under sail, the highly-efficient front-facing propeller acts as a hydro-generator which turns the 420 kW electric motor, storing energy in the six banks of batteries on board. “When you are sailing and regenerating power at the same time, you should not have to burn any fossil fuels. The supply is around 20 KW and upwards, which should be enough for the household load.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175388/image/large-4771cc488e33c058bbb02d3c3206a7d2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175388">One of the requirements was to achieve a 10-hour operational range for the batteries without the need for generator power. These generators can also be used to charge the batteries while sailing, creating silent power for when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> reaches her destination. “The regeneration, storage and use of power on yachts is becoming a very hot topic and we already have similar drives with regenerative capabilities being installed on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/51228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Full steam ahead on new Baltic 117 and 146 superyacht projects (2020-04-30 10:30:00 +0200)">Baltic 117</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/51132" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts unveils eco-friendly Baltic 68 Cafe Racer yacht (2020-03-31 15:00:00 +0200)">68 Cafe Racer</a> projects that are currently under construction.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175369/image/large-ad248f92311c30c001c57504e4874fa1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175369">ResetDesigned to be operated in remote areas around the world, simplicity in every system on board was a key part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova’s</a> brief. This had to be true for her sail-handling setup too, which was expertly devised by naval architects <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/152" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Farr Yacht Design (Company)">Farr Yacht Design</a> together with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/758" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="North Sails (Company)">North Sails</a>. Expected to sail whenever the wind allows, a carbon rig by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> with Carbo-link standing rigging supports an all-round sail plan that is easy to handle for her crew and requires minimal maintenance. “The rig is designed to be left-hoisted in areas where you might not expect it,” explains Hawkins. “Instead of a Code Zero, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> has a quad sail that is double sheeted, enabling the sail to be used across a much wider wind range where another sail might have to be taken down.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175321/image/large-1320deaab6a7b7f4a7ac9e607dbbb1df.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175321">The big staysail also comes with a few tricks of its own, running on a self-tacking track which eliminates the need to use sheets when reaching upwind using this sail. With sails generally designed for optimum performance at full-hoist, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova’s</a> efficient square-top main is equally powerful with one reef in it, allowing the head of the sail to come in below the top deflector and simplifying gybing and tacking manoeuvres. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175315/image/large-fda0a2d6361e797a3ae8de870396507e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175315"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175309/image/large-3d0bfbe8bb2defb303d0b2fb1bd048ce.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175309">Relax<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> exudes an air of relaxation and tranquillity palpable from the minute one steps aboard. The spacious guest cockpit and inviting built-in lounge are where family and friends get together after a long day at sea. A floating hardtop extends aft from the deckhouse and creates a wind-free corner for guests to relax while underway, with single-piece drop-down glass panels providing shelter without interrupting the view – an area that Micheletti explains required some creative thinking. “The most complex part was the design of the deckhouse with its ‘wing’ which had to protect the cockpit and make the boat ‘fly’,” he says.&nbsp;The signature teak-cladded side pillars in particular were designed as a functional detail instead of a decorative feature, while still suiting the overall aesthetic. Canova: Inside Baltic’s next-generation eco superyacht

As the newly-appointed CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>, Anders Kurten’s vision for the Finnish yacht builder is a clear one that builds on the strengths of the most northerly superyacht shipyard in the world. “We will be the global market leader for composite carbon sailing yachts,” comes Anders Kurten’s answer as I ask him about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>' next steps. Headquartered in the remote town of Jakobstad, the company has enjoyed a healthy order book over the past few years and has consistently been delivering ground-breaking projects dripping with high-tech, as well as environmentally sustainable features. On a recent visit to SuperYacht Times’ hometown of Amsterdam, we met with the new man behind the wheel of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a>. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/114203/image/large-ec4c7b39228cdd34e0ec6a4cc34ecda7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/114203">Trying to gauge how much of a boating fan Kurten really is, I ask him if he has a boat of his own.&nbsp;“I own plenty of boats!” he exclaims. “I have a couple of small boats - powerboats and a small sailing boat.” Kurten’s interest in the boating industry goes beyond the nine to five. Having left his previous job as Director, Products at Inha Works Ltd (a subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Europe that manufactures Buster, Cross and Yamarin boats), he remains the chairman of Finnboat, the overseeing organisation of Finland’s marine industry. “Building sailing boats, especially custom boats, has been something close to my heart from the beginning. So the sort of job I had before this one with powerboats, that was really the aberration, even though it lasted a fairly long while.”<img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/76853/image/large-800d61b0870d616d2f300c96844c4524.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/76853">Headhunted for his hands-on experience in the business, Kurten joins Henry Hawkins at the head of the company who now takes on the role as Executive Vice President from his previous position as CEO. Kurten has big shoes to fill, but being the native Finn that he is, Kurten already knows that things are about to change around the yard. “My philosophy is management by walking around. Every day that I am not travelling I tend to run through production and talk to the guys who are actually building the boats because it gives you a good sense of what is really going on. Production obviously is the pulsing heart of our company and keeping your finger on that pulse is important.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/57815/image/large-591fab1236735c671e5449770f567dc8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57815">With two superyacht projects currently under construction totalling over 80 metres in length, Anders has a lot to keep him busy with and 2020 will be all hands on deck as Jakobstad prepares for the deliveries of the Baltic 117 and Baltic 146. In addition to having started these two projects in 2019, last year was a particularly busy year for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> as the yard handed over three superyachts in that period including the Baltic 142 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> - one of the yard’s most challenging and innovative projects with its advanced foiling system. <img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/95726/image/large-a60adafc40dac476dbe5faaa56b08284.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/95726">Built for an experienced owner, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> stands out from other yachts in her class as the first project having been fitted with a DSS foil from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5516" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Infiniti Yachts (Company)">Infiniti Yachts</a> below the waterline that extends outward from either side of the hull for improved stability and performance. Combined with a powerful all-carbon rig by Rondal with Carbo-link standing rigging, the additional stability provided by the foil reduces the heel angle and overall comfort on board. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> is also built to be a low local emissions blue water cruiser, her hybrid propulsion system with hydrogeneration capability making it possible to cross the Atlantic without burning a single drop of fossil fuel.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/103589/image/large-5c1984a160ad6ef4535cb9323175a499.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103589">But despite these recent successes, Kurten is aware that there is still a lot of work to be done as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a>, like many other sailing yacht brands, keeps treading water in a challenging market segment.&nbsp;“I might not predict a buoyant next three years, but it looks good. It has been a fairly turbulent time for the industry, and that reflects on the company too. I feel that before we hit the water, we need to calm things down and focus our attention on what we are really, really good at - building high-end custom carbon composite performance sailing boats.” Kurten knows that with the backing of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> workforce - the company’s most valuable asset according to him - the brand will continue to stand out on the super sailing scene for their high-end performance-orientated sailing yachts.&nbsp;“One of the biggest surprises for me since joining the company is its people. The staff here, more so than at any other company that I’ve experienced, are incredibly proud of their work and genuinely want this company to be a success. It’s not even about the product, because you can’t make the product without the people.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/103585/image/large-804edf4437f03399b049916a5f95e37d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103585">Instead, for the tide to turn in the sailing market’s favour, Kurten believes that a long-term, industry-wide initiative is required - and he is already making headway on a local scale.&nbsp;“As an industry, we have collectively failed to generate enough interest and attention amongst the next generation in sailing. Fortunately, many of the national associations both in the US (NMMA) and Finland (Finnboat) have had long-term strategic initiatives and we are starting to see some traction there." It is these passionate sailors, exposed to the sport from a young age, that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> is squarely targetting. And to no surprise, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> sailing yachts are on average some of the most active contestants on the annual superyacht regatta scene, many of whom have been built for no other purpose but to go as fast as possible. “There is one thing that links most of our client base together, whether they are repeat or new, and is that they are extremely active, avid and engaged sailors. They use their boats a lot and most of the time when they are on the boat they are at the helm themselves. This type of ownership makes it really fun because they love sailing and using their toys.”<img src="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/uploads/store/photo/103586/image/large-fd8edcaba8fecc0824d2e692115767a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103586">For now, some of Kurten’s first tests lie closer to home as the shipyard deals with making the right choices that will keep Baltic on the right course as they look to the future. “I think the challenges will be of a more operative nature, to choose the projects wisely as we have limited capacity. We only ever do 3 or 4 projects simultaneously so it is very important which one you choose to pursue. These next few projects will become the stepping stones to achieving that goal of being the market leader in composite carbon sailing yachts. This unique new composite yacht was launched at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a> in Finland earlier this year and is the first sailing superyacht to carry Infiniti Yachts' innovative DSS foil system that is said to improve stability and reduce the yacht's heel angle when underway. Composite engineers Gurit in the UK designed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova’s</a> complex structure that will provide a solid platform during her long-distance voyages. (Company)">&nbsp;Rondal</a> rig with Carbo-link standing rigging. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/103588/image/large-160f6c1c90119076bfaf0ccdad0c1ef2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103588"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/103586/image/large-fd8edcaba8fecc0824d2e692115767a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103586">Her interior stylings feature white bulkhead panelling and deckheads in a winning combination, with teak veneers used in order to capitalise on the abundance of natural light found throughout the yacht.&nbsp;Guests on board <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a> are accommodated in three staterooms consisting of a full-beam master suite, a forward VIP stateroom and a twin stateroom. A full-beam owner’s suite can be found amidships and accommodation for up to eight crew is located in the aft section of the yacht.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/103584/image/large-f161231990138913f7cbacd0f7e04af2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103584"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/103583/image/large-75f568971fd52090e5c038519c76179f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103583">While her interior is striking, the yacht really stands out in her eco-friendliness - an important factor for the owner alongside comfort and economy - boasting an electric propulsion system, with a compact and virtually silent electric motor capable of delivering 425kW. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/103585/image/large-804edf4437f03399b049916a5f95e37d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103585">A hydrogeneration system allows for a large lithium ion bank to be charged and lets the yacht’s hotel systems run in ‘silent mode’ for up to nine straight hours without the need to recharge.&nbsp;Furthermore, her avid-sailor owner says: “I want her to sail, not motor sail, but she has to be easy to handle for the crew so automated control was important.”&nbsp; She is equipped with electric winches and hydraulic systems are reduced to a minimum. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/103589/image/large-5c1984a160ad6ef4535cb9323175a499.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103589">The priority that the owner gave to comfort and safety inspired him to opt for a Dynamic Stability System foil, an athwartships sliding board set just below the waterline designed to reduce heel and dramatically dampen pitching motion in a seaway. “I am very pleased to see that heel angle can already be reduced by eight degrees in trials and there is plenty more fine-tuning to come when we understand more about how to trim the yacht in conjunction with the foil,” comments <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canova43.3m (142'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2019">Canova</a>’s owner. “The reduction in pitching motion is amazing. Any performance increase in terms of speed will be a bonus,” he adds. A large fixed bimini extends aft over the cockpit that follows the same level as the deckhouse for an uninterrupted indoor-outdoor feeling. Single-piece glass panels on either side of the cockpit protect guests from the elements and can be lowered when at anchor. Finnish shipyard Baltic Yachts have been putting its new 43-metre foiling sailing yacht Canova to the test.
