When it comes to yacht manufacturing, discussions have traditionally centred on the West, particularly in Northern and Southern Europe. Over recent years, the industry has begun to explore the potential of regions such as the Middle East and Asia, though despite this broader perspective, South America, and specifically Brazil, often remains underrepresented in this discourse.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>, located in Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil, originally specialised in manufacturing offshore vessels. However, when Gilberto Ramalho acquired the shipyard in 1985, he transformed it significantly. Described as a 'visionary,' Gilberto aimed to not only own a shipyard but also create and develop a new yachting market in Brazil.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315286/image/large-7c93cf8484c95b2e9a15a07eeaf16006.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315286">Initially, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> offered its own range of yachts and the shipyard invited designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">Luiz De Basto</a> to create their first concept, the Oceanic 53 open cruiser. Subsequently, Ramalho initiated a significant transition by introducing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> yachts to the Brazilian market. Over the next decade, noticing the demand for more expansive outdoor areas due to the tropical climate, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> tailored these yachts specifically for local preferences. Gilberto modified the designs to feature enlarged flybridges, extended sterns and bows, and upgraded air conditioning systems. In 2009, Gilberto Ramalho passed away, and his daughter, Roberta Ramalho, assumed the role of CEO at the young age of 18, becoming one of the youngest leaders in the yacht manufacturing industry at that time. <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a> writer Enrico Chhibber engaged in an extensive discussion with CEO Roberta Ramalho and Rafael Paiao, the Vice President of Growth and Marketing. The conversation delved into the history and evolution of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>, explored the nuances of the Brazilian yachting market in comparison to other global markets, and discussed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>'s strategic plans for the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315279/image/large-8fee710ea53639244f32b86e92b75190.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315279">Since 2010, Roberta has returned <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> back to its origins, refocusing on the development of the company's own line of yachts. Commenting on the evolution of yacht ownership in Brazil, Roberta highlighted the rapid growth of the domestic yachting market, noting significant increases in both the demand for larger yachts and the volume of units sold. She elaborated, “Today 80- foot yachts are more commonly found in Brazil”. However, despite Brazil's extensive coastline, which is ideally suited for sailing, the country's maritime infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing demand. Currently, there is a significant need for larger vessels, yet our marinas and facilities are struggling to accommodate these larger yachts”.As the conversation progressed, Roberta further detailed the differences between European and Brazilian preferences in yacht design. She noted that for Brazilians, the use of yachts is highly personal. “Each client has unique needs. This emphasis on individualisation is highly valued in our market. Brazilians particularly appreciate having tailor-made projects, especially with a focus on customising the exterior”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315296/image/large-3b10e9b313a41aa393396c5806450c4b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315296">Regarding features that are important for the domestic market, Roberta highlighted several key elements including a beach club, an ice maker machine on the exterior, and beer draughts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228639/image/large-fdc6cfab8c6059ac7895411d7000877b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228639"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315295/image/large-bd4c9c0edcdfed27064e10f88d05abb5.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315295"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315297/image/large-bf1dfa8deaf2ab3b389a1947edb35313.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315297">Rafael then showed me several images illustrating how the exterior and interior design details of their yachts are seamlessly integrated, aiming to provide clients with a strong connection to the outdoors. “The integration between the stern and the main deck creates a unified level, which gives the impression that the boat is one continuous space. This design makes the vessel feel much larger,” he recounted. Rafael then further emphasised that this design philosophy is particularly appealing to their Brazilian clientele, who have exclusively been <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>’s market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228634/image/large-7693cff8464a1f28300ec016ed277e69.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228634"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315298/image/large-f874a4b982d65d11975d784f71ddd7cd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315298">Elucidating on the differences in yacht usage, Roberta affirmed that Brazilians typically use yachts for short trips. “They stay for about three or four days, but it’s not for long voyages. Brazilians prefer to cruise around the islands,” she noted.Regarding <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>’s current production capacity and strategy, the shipyard is situated in a former 50,000 square metre railcar factory in Osasco. As pointed out by Roberta, the strategy focus is not on mass-producing vessels; although capable of building up to 200 boats, the shipyard prefers to construct fewer but larger yachts, with an emphasis on luxurious features and customisation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315285/image/large-483a2d8f654a6e5c81115bc0c3215385.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315285">Three years ago, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> expanded its portfolio by launching the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> 24m model. To date, they have built and delivered ten of these yachts, with three more currently under construction. Aside from these and many smaller models, the shipyard has also constructed the largest yacht to date — the 28.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> 95 model, with only one built and delivered.Regarding the design of the yachts, Rafael further elaborated: “If you examine our 24-metre model, it features a flybridge comparable in size to that of a 30-metre yacht. Similarly, the stern and the bow of our 24-metre model mirror what you’d typically find on a 30-metre yacht. In Brazil, these expansive features are essential, they maximise the enjoyment of everything the outdoors has to offer”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315300/image/large-1d0c95ccb103985d7e57b05eab33d74c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315300">On how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> distinguishes itself from other Brazilian shipyards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/513" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="INACE Yachts (Company)">Inace</a>, Roberta clarified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> caters to a distinct clientele. “Their yachts are typically larger, designed for slower and longer voyages, attracting a very different type of customer,” she explained. Rafa further added, “Many of our clients own homes on islands or along the beach. They primarily use their yachts for social gatherings or family time but often return to their homes to sleep. The culture here does not favour long voyages. For example, while filming our 70-foot model in Paraty, I observed that someone with a house there might take a short cruise about 45 minutes to an hour away, simply to visit friends”.When discussing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>’s future plans, Roberta unveiled <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>'s latest project, a 30-metre yacht, which is set to be their largest project to date, surpassing the previous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> 95 model. She noted, “We're constructing our biggest yacht ever, and it will be delivered in Monaco to a Brazilian client.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315322/image/large-2a527ca730c4d330a8ce33408acdbe7f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315322"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> has plans to expand further into the international market. CEO Roberta Ramalho on her takeover of Intermarine at 18 and the Brazilian yacht market

SYT sits down with Roberta Ramalho to discuss her takeover of the company and returning the yard to its roots and the Brazilian yacht market.


“When I was in architecture school and spent summers on the coast of Maine, I walked into a yacht company and asked them, ‘how do you do this, this and this?’ They explained it all to me, and I told them, I’ll be back.”&nbsp;These are the words of Ward Setzer, founder of the Florida-based design studio, Setzer Yacht Architects which has been in operation since 1991. The Setzer studio has had a highly successful run over its 27-year-long career so far, with a portfolio encompassing over 800 designs for 60 yards all around the world, including Trinity Yachts, Delta Marine, McMullen &amp; Wing and Christensen. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/32315/image/large-a82b30a5d30fc02ce48f5e9c5df81048.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32315">Setzer is a truly American designer and astute businessman who, through his New American Motor Yachts Collection launched in 2013 has offered his own corrective to what it means to have an ‘American style’ superyacht. Speaking with the designer at a typically hectic Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, we discovered why ‘less is more’ is more than just a saying, the importance of living the superyacht experience as a designer, and how Setzer Design Group survived the implosion of the US market during the recession. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/32312/image/large-0e8efb2199c94e99bdde7e079d013116.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32312">With arguably one of the best introductions to the industry, Setzer started his career in Palm Beach in 1984 under the tutelage of the American naval architecture legend J.B. Hargrave. Indeed, this was a somewhat precocious start to Setzer’s career: as he explained, “on my first day of work, I was given a 44-metre vessel to design - right out of design school!&nbsp;”From there, it was moving on to found and manage the Custom Yachts Division at Hatteras Yachts in 1986 until Setzer went his own way and opened his own studio in 1991. A big step for any designer, for Setzer, the decision was driven by one urge above all: curiosity. As Setzer says, “I was driven to learn more from builders around the world and to do that you have to get out there and learn. Curiosity drives you towards solving problems for clients: that’s all design is in the end, creative problem-solving. After so many years in one facility, your choice is either to jump ship and go into construction somewhere else or to hang out your own shingle as a designer and naval architect.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/32316/image/large-39762c10bb3d4da677087625d60b9b30.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32316">And hang out his shingle he did. An 88-foot aluminium and fibreglass sportfisher was Setzer’s first commission from Broward Marine in 1991, with another one of his most notable designs found in his work on the 43.2-metre Namoh (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4249" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Bee43.28m (141'12&quot;)">Lady Bee</a>) for Christensen. The studio also collaborated with some of the US’ top shipyards at the time, including Trinity, Trident Shipworks, Richmond Yachts, Intermarine USA and Lyman Morse.&nbsp;As Setzer sees it, the early part of his studio’s success was a case of being at the right place at the right time as the superyacht industry was developing in the US. “The timing was good for us. By 1995, we had started as the design firm for Trinity, Intermarine USA, Trident Shipworks, and they all happened within a month of each other.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/32314/image/large-df7f22605e6bc3d9f1303ab6f913879c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32314">Setzer’s early collaborations with American yards also came at an exciting time of innovation for the industry internationally, not just in the States. Between the late 1980s and the early 2000s, designers and yards in the US created what we now know as the modern raised pilothouse yacht, as well as the design of shorter tri-deck vessels, which, as Setzer explained, established the market desire in the minds of buyers for these products. “This afforded a place for international brands to eventually mimic and latch on to and build their own followings [...] US quality and innovation lead the way until adjustments within the global economy made us share the fun while labour issues and mismanagement took things in other directions." It is these vital years of US yachting innovation which are often overlooked in representations of the American yacht industry. As Setzer says, “everyone loves to paint a bad picture of the state of the American yacht industry but they speak from a position of not knowing its history, how it came to be after World War II, what drove its phenomenal growth and eventual decline.” And, despite the subsequent decline faced by shipyards such as Trinity, Intermarine, Trident and Richmond, the Setzer studio continued to thrive. As Setzer told us, “They imploded as companies, and yet through diversification we carried on. The whole industry kind of hobbled on together in the US.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/32313/image/large-ffd47a6e64847ad78cfc2ceda437d0f9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32313" style="background-color: initial; font-size: 0.95rem;">The Vestal 6200 in development for the Italian Sea Group Looking at it 27 years later, Setzer’s design career has certainly been more of a marathon than a hobble. He has an impressive portfolio of international collaborations beyond the US, including the 62-metre Vestal 6200 four deck motor yacht which is currently under development for the Italian Sea Group.&nbsp;One of the biggest developments for Setzer Design Group in recent years was the aforementioned New American Motor Yachts Collection, revealed in 2013. As for the inspiration for these new designs, it came from a two year design sabbatical Setzer spent on the Caribbean island of Antigua. “I&nbsp;wanted to see if I could connect deeper with the superyacht feel. I had a brand new studio right above the water. It was just me and my wife and a clean slate, and therefore resulted in some of the cleanest and most productive design work I’ve ever done.”Moving from the hectic life of his US-based design studio to the relative tranquility of the Caribbean resulted in the designer’s return to the US with a portfolio of 22 designs ranging from 28 to 70 metres, 16 of which were sold after he returned - a successful sabbatical indeed. But for Setzer, his time in Antigua represented something deeper than a chance to relax and enabled him to connect, on a personal level, with how owners use their boats: “It’s about being in tune with how boats are really used. In Antigua, we interfaced with captains and crew and started to really understand that these third and fourth homes, as I like to call them, can feel like long lost children sometimes. You’ve got to really understand how this crew manages and runs the yacht, deploys the toys, entertains the guests, stocks the vessel, and you can’t always get a grip on that unless you see how owners use their yachts both for charter and for personal use.”Vitally too, informing Setzer’s most contemporary designs, too, is a shift in tastes he has noticed from his American clients who are moving towards a more minimalistic - and, arguably, a more European - aesthetic. “All these classic designs with numerous details and expensive trappings are too much. Instead of all this bling everywhere, ‘less is more’ is my mantra. Clean lines are key to the way I draw today, from pencil to paper and computer to ‘as built’ dreams.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/32311/image/large-7a9fb5d04716f13685685ecbeaf98522.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32311">For Setzer, this change in American stylistic tastes is connected to the move towards a younger demographic of superyacht owners who expect to use their vessels differently from their predecessors. As Setzer told us, “The average age of the American superyacht owner is coming down…. they’ve got a more modern taste in architecture and they’re more travelled than they have been in the past. They want more open-plan interiors; we’ve almost gone to the minimalistic bean-bag chair world with lots of glass. She features a beautiful classic interior by Studio Vafiadis. Powered by twin 2,285 hp MTU 12 V 396 TE94 Diesels, she cruises at 16 knots and has a top speed of 21 knots. Superyacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1445">O'Pari</a> is available for charters, and is seen her at anchor at the Sirene Blue Hotel in Poros.

Intermarine is preparing the launch of their new range of luxury yachts in 2011. The new yachts were presented through large scale models, catalogues, and presentations by their designers at the São Paulo Boat Show, the most important nautical event in Brazil. The new exclusive range of the Brazilian brand is the result of partnerships with renowned international design studios. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133309/image/large-ffde6e6636e18a37a902aaee552a90a3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133309">About Intermarine Intermarine is one of the most prestigious shipyards in Brazil; they are the national leader in the production of luxury yachts from 38 to 76 feet. In an area of 50.000 square meters, in São Paulo metropolitan region, the yachts are built with passion and craftsmanship. Due to the needs of the local market, where the climate is pleasant throughout the year, the yachts built by Intermarine were different from the European models; with longer swim platforms and stern areas, more powerful engines and generators, different interior layout and decoration. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133311/image/large-0baf46b60e2b4d4fd62adb1f3fb47a1b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133311">Simultaneously, during this partnership time, Intermarine continued building its own range of high performance offshore boats. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133312/image/large-23609e43629b3a761642d735824b031c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133312">In 2009 Intermarine and Azimut Yachts discussed the possible acquisition of Intermarine, after the death of the owner, however both companies couldn’t reach an agreement. The contract between Intermarine and Azimut Yachts runs until 31st July 2011, after which Intermarine will stop the production of yachts for Azimut. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133313/image/large-09a5bc69f7e1c5bf7e909cba6bd0060a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133313">The New Era Managed by an experienced board of directors, Intermarine has decided to build its own product range, projected by renowned design studios: BMW Group Designworks USA, Luiz de Basto Designs and Fernando de Almeida Yacht Design. The task given to the design studios was to create the new identity of Intermarine yachts, with focus on innovation, high quality and performance. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133314/image/large-4a561da6bdb36cac457b6f3827b30974.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133314">The four new models unveiled at the São Paulo Boat Show 2010 will be in the water next year: Intermarine 55, Intermarine 60, Intermarine 75 and Intermarine 85. Three other models will be launched in 2011 and more models will follow in 2012. At present the Brazilian market is one of the most important in the nautical industry and therefore it will be the main focus of the company. Intermarine launches new yachts with international design studios

Intermarine is a 35 year old yard, leader of the Brazilian and South American markets, producing boats from 43 to 76 feet, which recently decided to renew its entire flybridge line. Luiz de Basto, with whom the yard has worked in the past, was called to design and establish the new line and the new family look for the large size models of the line. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132824/image/large-3eb385dbf5fc9c7f7667c35958b3c4b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132824">The yard has built and sold thousands of units since 1973 when it was established. In an area of over 500,000 square feet, world class yachts are build with passion craftsmanship. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132825/image/large-8768f9516ea23bb25cb792921b2bbfc6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132825">The 85 feet model is the flagship and along with the 75 was introduced this past week at the São Paulo boat show. It's the most advanced yacht ever built by this Brazilian shipyard, the country's leader in luxury vessels. The Intermarine 85 will impress. The combination of bold design, luxurious fittings and excellent performance makes this an extraordinary yacht. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132826/image/large-190ac04136e293cea99f6ed968e65cfc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132826">Searching to integrate the interior and exterior, to allow the owner to be completely integrated with the sea, Luiz de Basto designed an enormous swath of glass running along both sides of the hull, ending at the anchor plate, and large windows to illuminate the main salon allowing a privileged view from all the interior spaces. Thanks to a huge windshield that becomes a skylight, the main salon is awash in natural light. All these elements are combined on a striking profile, giving the impression the boat is leaping forward in a burst of energy. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132827/image/large-7d9c524f5cad3c085d52e38c40607e3c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132827">The layout shows owner stateroom, VIP and 2 guest cabins below, plus a powder room. The owner's stateroom with a king size bed, working desk and sofa is complete with his and her's bathroom and a separate walk-in closet. Huge windows frame spectacular sea views. The corridor has a washer dryer just for the guest's comfort. At the transom, the crew area features two cabins for four, bathroom, lounge and galley, plus the service laundry. A sumptuous salon with a large U-shaped sofa and chaise lounge set stage for the panoramic windows looking out onto the sea, providing unique views. An open galley and dining for 8 guests complement the salon.
