Francesca Webster sits down with father and son design duo Georges and Stefano Vafiadis to find out how the pair have created a beautiful design synergy and launched over 40 yachts in the process.&nbsp;While an increasing number of yacht design studios deal with uncertainty regarding leadership succession, the family behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a> appears to have set itself up for a smooth transition.&nbsp;In the 12 years since joining his father’s design house, Stefano Vafiadis has evolved from designer to partner. He now leads the creative arm of the company while his father Georges manages the business and oversees the projects. Francesca recently sat down with the duo over video call, with them in their green and sunlit studio in the heart of Rome, Francesca from the banks of the grey and blustery IJ in Amsterdam. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334982/image/large-9a918c3210381b01c5609b4ee4f7d413.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334982"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a> was founded in Rome in the 1980s where Georges had been working as a designer after his studies, first in National Monument Restoration for UNESCO and then at an industrial design firm that introduced him to yacht design. Launching his first yacht Gran Mudder&nbsp;in 1983, the success of the studio quickly took off, launching many large yachts through the 1980s.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/36750/image/large-72633b07831ae8833f8c016af424cebd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/36750">In 1994, the studio launched the 28.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> Opus I (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanis 28.6m (93'10&quot;)Baglietto S.p.A.1994">Oceanis</a>) in collaboration with the historic Italian shipyard, inaugurating a relationship which remains strong to this day. Over the decades, Georges and subsequently Stefano, have fostered long standing relationships with two key partners <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> being the first and the Greek builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> is a deep one, with the studio having designed more than 15 yachts for him over the course of more than 30 years. Georges explains, “With Mr Dragis we share a cultural heritage which has helped foster a close bond over the years. “The first yacht I designed for him was the 42-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jaan42.0m (137'10&quot;)Intermarine S.p.A.1997">O’Pari</a> built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine S.p.A. (Company)">Intermarine</a> in 1997, which was based on the design of one of my earlier yachts, the 38-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/567" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Indigo Star I38.0m (124'8&quot;)Siar & Moschini1995">Indigo Star</a>. Since then we have launched three subsequent yachts named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jaan42.0m (137'10&quot;)Intermarine S.p.A.1997">O’Pari</a>, the most recent being the 95-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a>’ currently under construction; the 60-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts GY60-01202360.0m (196'10&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2025">O’Madeleine</a> and another confidential project yet to be unveiled, the studio mentality of “our best yacht is always our next yacht”, is clearly something that Paris Dragnis also believes. Given the international acclaim awarded to the yard’s most recent launch, the 77.7-metre O’Rea, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a>, it is no surprise that the collaboration between yard and studio has remained so strong over the years. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a> also marked a new era for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> fleet. Launched in 2023, she is the first of the fleet to feature a straight bow, offering her a contemporary profile that helps her stand out from her predecessors.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297986/image/large-d9e0e546e4c5d78ec02335bd764e3054.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297986"> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334985/image/large-7784dc2b9b6c1ba7f7c696d0c2a20dfa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334985">For the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a>, the opportunity to design something different allowed them to play with the volume and lines of the yacht, Stefano explains: “As John <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> taught us, yacht design is all about balancing volumes. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a> offered us an opportunity to create a lot of volume in the hull, with her straight bow and wide beam, and this allowed us to create a sleek and sexy profile that creates a sporty aesthetic. While all of the yachts feature spacious beach clubs, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a> is a step above. She also features technological advancements on her predecessors with her enclosed anchoring, disappearing swim platform and hydraulic shell doors.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334986/image/large-fd44cec649f53ee5dfce2206ecdad07d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334986">Balancing timeless design with modern attributes sits at the heart of the studio’s mentality. Many of Georges’ early yachts remain contemporary even decades after their launch. When it comes to the stylistic thread that flows between their yachts, Stefano explains that there is no ‘copy and paste’ mentality; “We always begin with a blank sheet of paper, we like new challenges. In every stage we reflect on the experience that comes from my father and our designers, but we use that experience to start from scratch, and to inform our designs.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189378/image/large-2fc774c2226c639d353750a5499144d8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189378">While upholding his father’s legacy, and collaborating as true partners remains a priority for Stefano, he has nonetheless made his own mark on the business in recent years. &nbsp;It was in fact Stefano that &nbsp;directed the studio’s more recent and increasingly successful partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, which was restarted in 2017 with the DOM Line. At the time the DOM series was created with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/863" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cerri & Associati (Company)">Cerri</a> shipyard, which was later absorbed into Baglietto in 2020, taking the DOM series with it, the first hull of which was the 37-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7953" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Run Away37.3m (122'5&quot;)Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN)2021">Run Away</a> launched in 2021.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189379/image/large-53fb0795846d013637eae57d082d442f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189379"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7953" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Run Away37.3m (122'5&quot;)Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN)2021">Run Away</a> was only the beginning of a fruitful series, and since launching the initial DOM line, 11 hulls have been sold. Today the team are working on a new series announced in the Spring of last year, the 35-metre DOM 115, the first hull of which has been sold and is already in-build. “The 35-metre is an interesting yacht, with a huge amount of volume for her size range and with a closer interaction between the interior and exterior spaces than any other yacht on the market,” explains Stefano. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189399/image/large-8c6c5172356eb759230edf856ba941c4.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189399">This interior-exterior interaction has become an increasing focus for yacht design over the last few years and Stefano believes that social media has played a major role in this development. “The demands of owners and the perspective of yachting has changed a lot since the advent of social media. In the past the attention was all about the yacht as an object to be admired and be looked at, today the focus is on the lifestyle that can be enjoyed onboard. For designers this has opened many doors and allows us to focus on the space as a living, breathing thing,” he comments.With this change, owners are more focused on silence than speed, and on efficiency and stabilisation, considerations that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a> is working hard to bake into all of its projects. When it comes to their clients, much like the shipyards they collaborate with, Georges and Stefano are dedicated to fostering long term relationships and many of their clients have worked with them for decades. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/185111/image/large-96bfd3ddcee28b12c643c368543da19e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/185111">Georges explains, “Most of our owners are repeat clients, and even our new, younger clients are already discussing their next project. For us these relationships are extremely important and we work hard to keep the client happy. It is not our role to make decisions for them, we see ourselves as expert advisers who are there to answer their questions, ensure projects go smoothly, and ultimately to deliver the final product that they are looking for.”This client-first approach is also something that has helped to inform the legacy of the studio. Stefano’s gradual development within the team has allowed him to build his own personal relationships with those long standing clients. Stefano adds, “Our partnership is at the heart of the studio today, there is a continuous dialogue between us, and I believe it is a very beautiful and unusual collaboration. The 41.45-metre <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/companies/intermarine-savannah" target="_blank">Intermarine Savannah</a> superyacht <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/yachts/fortitude" target="_blank">Fortitude</a>, previously named Burgas, is going to be auctioned for sale by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boathouse Auctions (Company)">Boathouse Auctions</a>. The auction is due to begin on 17 October at 16:00 in Fort Lauderdale and will begin at $3,000,000. Responsible for the concept’s elegant interiors, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giuseppina Arena (Company)">Giuseppina</a> focused on establishing a sense of harmony between Stardust’s exterior and interior aesthetic. Balance is at the core of Stardust’s design and each interior design element has been thoughtfully and purposely chosen to seamlessly blend with the yacht’s exterior.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295030/image/large-e06ed99594895d2701b8200246eb3637.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295030">Can you share some career highlights since our last interview back in 2021?Yes, I have been working on the refits of a few <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> yachts in Italy and in Miami. Some clients had yachts coming from Europe and they needed them to be refitted here locally, while another client did a refit in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/681" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Marine (Company)">Monaco Marine</a> and we delivered the yacht to Europe. I have also been working on a new project, a big catamaran, but I can’t reveal which shipyard this is for yet, it is approximately 40-metres. I have been working on some residential projects which are connected with the yacht world in terms of location, style and design, they will be revealed soon. I divide my work between residential projects and yachts. I’ve worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>, completed the Navetta and at the time of our last interview I had completed the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4472" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dynamiq Yachts (Company)">Dynamiq</a> GTT 135 superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7937" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stefania41.0m (134'6&quot;)Dynamiq Yachts2021">Stefania</a>. There is a lot of refit work here in Florida so that’s what I have been doing recently, as well as a collaboration with Exclusive Resort on some residential resort projects. Notably, I have worked on a 50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> yacht, though I can’t share more details, it was completely original and we incorporated some unique elements that we generally never see on yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291790/image/large-2c102f7b3c5744c0ea0c08a249a29efa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291790">Could you share insights into how your collaboration with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>&nbsp;came about and what the design brief for this new concept was?We spoke a lot about a possible collaboration and how they were willing to launch a new project which would feature unique exterior lines and distinctive interiors. They found a great exterior designer who provides high quality work and asked me if I wanted to be involved in the process. I was enthusiastic about the collaboration because I have always loved <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a> shipyard and the modern, contemporary, sleek interiors which they normally produce. We had a quick briefing and they informed me about the young client’s design preferences. I tried to create an interior which seamlessly matched the yacht’s profile, bringing the exterior lines and conceptual elements into the interior. The name Stardust conveys how unique the project is, contrasting the darkness of the sky with the brightness of the stars. These elements of dark grey and bright highlights are evident in the yacht’s exterior and I tried to emulate this, creating a one of a kind interior. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291789/image/large-75b096db1790d55128d6b7acf605555d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291789"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291792/image/large-538731170f9250f64c77cf915512abc7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291792">What stylistic inspiration influenced your vision for the interiors of Stardust?The interior design of Stardust is very masculine whilst also remaining elegant and relaxing for guests onboard. In terms of the use of colours and shapes, the design inspiration stems back to the concept of compromise and harmony. The interiors showcase contrasting tones which aren’t too dark but remain modern. The overall goal was to achieve a synergy between the interior and exterior.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291786/image/large-46eea9b2b12004ea4ccae9ee69aed51b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291786">A notable feature onboard the Stardust yacht concept is the inclusion of floor to ceiling windows, how do these align with the overall vision for the yacht’s interior?The inclusion of floor to ceiling windows was crucial to the design of the yacht and I worked closely with the exterior designer to seamlessly integrate them. One of the pivotal spaces onboard Stardust is the beach club area, it strongly conveys the connection between the exterior and the interior. Continuity was key to the beach club’s style, the walls are adorned in high gloss with metal profiles and one of the two doors in the area is hidden. The generous space of the beach club can house a small gym, spa, steam room, seating area and a bar in a type of all-encompassing lounge which is connected to the cockpit through a shared skylight. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291794/image/large-6387b54ee7cb940dd62406394cc70593.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291794"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293672/image/large-d0bc1d6a039435e7c88d0090ca6ebed3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293672">Functionality and elegance often coexist within your yacht designs, what challenges did you face with Stardust when designing practical yet luxurious living spaces?The connection and dialogue with the shipyard during the design process was crucial. We discussed the technical features which would be incorporated into Stardust. Form follows function, in this case both aspects came together because the shipyard asked us to consider functionality during the planning stages. We worked closely with the technical department during the initial phases, considering questions like where do we put the ventilation tank for the engine room? In addition, storage was key and predominantly located in the two staterooms and behind the library in the saloon.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293666/image/large-9f0ed087b4712c4964a85f6d9bf39ab7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293666"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293668/image/large-8f6af90441204681039c6f40c50d0c35.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293668">The upper deck showcases an impressive owner’s suite, with access to a private pool, in what ways has privacy and exclusivity been incorporated into Stardust’s design?In terms of what sets the design of Stardust apart from other yachts, I would have to say the detailed finishes and the unique ceiling. Regarding exclusivity, the partition behind the bed in the master suite echoes residential interior design, whilst maintaining the yacht element. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291796/image/large-082a5d9d1676131f398b3a2da933c75f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291796"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292669/image/large-427bc3c0640cf4f28c0fdc00180e96fb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292669"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293663/image/large-9efbdf6b13f644210bddfa03bb99467f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293663">Meticulous attention to detail is a trademark of your design style, which unique intricate design elements have been incorporated into the Stardust concept?We paid attention to the details of the furniture because we wanted the intricate design elements to be unique. The entrance showcases two symmetrical shelved libraries, featuring high gloss finishes, combining vertical and horizontal metal. As I mentioned, storage was an important architectural feature to consider when designing the interiors. The first lounge area displays floor to ceiling windows and houses free standing, floating furniture. We created a very elegant and modern design, showcasing sleek lines, particularly in the forward partition in the main saloon. The saloon displays metallic tones, which aren’t intensely shiny, reminiscent of an industrial style, this creates a cloudy effect which is very fitting for the Stardust concept.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293665/image/large-864ce2a0427d0810ad610eaf2f90c10c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293665"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293661/image/large-4cdd96a1f05430dd3fd0f94360698755.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293661">The rigid lines of the saloon are echoed in the master suite, contrasting a comfortable and chic design with modern and firm features. Notably, a unique wall is situated behind the headboard in the master stateroom, creating the sense of a partition from the port to the starboard side. The fixed lines contrast with the curved, soft furniture within the suite. Forward of the master stateroom is the private pool, this offers guests a calm sanctuary to enjoy, while an exclusive office and ensuite are also situated in the stateroom and will reflect the style of the master suite.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293670/image/large-a272b8c8d242993f3194b765827fdd66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293670"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293671/image/large-2138be1eb04fdb314d9600312c0a85b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293671">In what ways have you employed specific shapes and colours to create a sense of serenity onboard?Stardust’s exterior significantly shaped the interior design. I started with the lines, I tried to match the smooth exterior lines with more rounded lines. The lighting was also key as we wanted to create a similar atmosphere to the yacht’s bright exterior, blending the two together. Harmonising the interior colours was a key design element, fusing muted grey and darker tones with high gloss finishings. We also worked with a beige milky colour, reflective of the Milky Way and we wanted to add a touch of light into the carpeting and the precious stone in the dining area, to adhere to the project’s Stardust title. The carpet in the lounge area encapsulates this goal, transforming the darker elements to feature bright accents. These celestial interior design features are part of the reason why Stardust is most effectively presented during the night. The yacht concept derived from the desire to create a dark elegant atmosphere, characterised by elements of brightness, this was achieved through the furniture and lighting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293664/image/large-b50c81ccfd65c8acbdc055e9025d5367.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293664"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291795/image/large-2860551c8bc4268047d2622b4efdffca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291795">Another distinctive design aspect onboard Stardust is the dark grey mirror. This interior feature blends with Stardust’s signature high gloss finishes, to form a subtle depth. I would also consider the dining table to be a masterpiece. I am currently waiting for the green light from the shipyard to reveal this next project, it will be a completely different concept from Stardust, something one of a kind which truly represents my firm. The beauty of working with clients is that you can bring their visions to life, whilst experimenting and growing as a designer, allowing you to become very eclectic, this is at the heart of my work.

(Company)">Golden Yachts</a> shipyard in Athens, Greece, is himself a multiple boat owner. That he started his long and illustrious career as a professional seaman, gaining his captain’s certificate before his 26th birthday, and progressed to becoming a commercial ship owner is important, because it speaks not only to a passion for the sea but also to great experience in all aspects of owning and operating vessels. Even more so, in fact, as most of the vessels <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. When I was young I had sailing boats, and then I took a wooden boat for my family and I started to love it. I decided in the early 1990s to build a 40-metre yacht in GRP – quite a big boat for that time – at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine S.p.A. (Company)">Intermarine</a> yard in Italy.A lot of people asked to charter the yacht, and I found that with two weeks charter I could cover all my expenses for the year. That first yacht actually covered its costs five and a half times over and also brought me a lot of happiness.I started to go bigger, to 50 metres through to 60 metres. It was all done with cash from our own pocket because I had a very bad experience with banks – when you have a problem they turn on you, which is happening to a lot of ship owners in Greece and internationally. I consider yachts a luxury item and I do them in cash with no banks involved.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/115062/image/large-7e6abcde2e7beeb51bd205292586f1c7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/115062">You not only own and now build your own yachts but also put them into service as a charter fleet. How do you keep ahead of the competition and make that a viable business?PD: We entered the charter market almost by coincidence, but then our company started to become very well known. We have a lot of very famous people who come as charter clients – I can’t mention names due to confidentiality agreements, but they include kings, prime ministers, famous sports stars, and many others.I don’t like to have competition from the market for chartering. There are too many 50-metre boats, so I want bigger boats – my next yacht is 122 metres. The charter market is also very high right now and our boats are fully booked. When I signed for the first 42-metre it turned out the yard had advertised the boat with the name Paris – my name. They wanted $300,000 for it, so I said don’t worry, we will put an O’ in front of it, because in ancient Greek that actually gives emphasis to the name. I’ve owned more than 600 ships, and I’ve now left my sons to take care of the shipping business. I like the yacht industry, and I joke with friends sometimes that the yachts are my new girlfriends!I am 78 years old and I am still working. I am very happy that I have a family and grandchildren and I’m still very active 24 hours a day because work, especially in yachting, makes me very excited. Sometimes I have ideas in the middle of the night, and the following morning I start consulting people on them. I am also very happy that I give jobs to more than 400 people in my country, which is very important at the moment, and in a sector that is not so well known here.Your sons John and Vasilis work in the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a>&nbsp;side of the business – how important is that family aspect to you?I’d love to leave behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> for my kids as a brand that they will improve more and more. What are your plans for the yard and for future projects?PD: Our second yard here opened earlier this year, but we are actually in the process of trying to buy a bigger shipyard with all the facilities including synchrolift and floating dock to be able to both build and refit yachts up to 150 metres. We wanted to buy both the shipyards here in Piraeus but once the sellers realised who we were the price tripled overnight.We have a 125-metre yacht in design – a fantastic boat – and I have a proposal for a 140-metre yacht that has been built at another shipyard and that yard has made a proposal for me to finalise the yacht for them. I have had a lot of people approach me lately to do business with them – I didn’t expect it but if you perform and you build in a timely way the results will come, and I take care of my boats.Vasilis Dragnis: The second shipyard in Piraeus took 18 months to develop. We built the yard specifically for yachts from 40m to 140m – the yard covers 7,500 square metres and it also has an underground piping network for gas which makes it very safe for welding. We have a floating dock for vessels up to 4,000 tons but we have plans for a new floating dock with a 10,000-ton capacity. We also have all sorts of services inhouse, including steel fabrication, piping, mechanics, electricians, hydraulics specialists and more. And although we’re focused on new-builds, we do also do refits.PD: In our other shipyard in Piraeus we do refits up to 60 metres, and we do quite a lot of them. But she is something very different – it’s the first time we have done an axe-bow yacht, and it’s the first time we have put guest cabins on the lower deck and not just on the main or upper decks.We’ve also used many different techniques in the aluminium construction as she has a lot of curves, which is more demanding in terms of construction. We gathered all the experience from our previous yachts and instilled it all in this new project. My brother John and I pushed Vafiadis to try something different – we specifically wanted this different design. So far so good – we’ve already got a lot of demand for charter!

This creates an excellent position for enjoying time on the water and furniture can be placed onto this large deck allowing guests to enjoy drinks and meals on this platform. This week’s SYT 3D yacht of the week is the 36m WallyPower superyacht Galeocerdo built by Wally.

The mind boggles slightly as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giuseppina Arena (Company)">Giuseppina Arena</a> lists the projects she has worked on during her 27 year career as an interior designer, working almost exclusively within the maritime industry. Having completed her doctorate in architecture, where her professors criticised her for being too nautical and not architectural enough, she went on to graduate from the Florence University of Architecture in 1997, studying in their newly established course for yacht design – she is truly a pioneer of her industry in Italy.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/204038/image/large-12cd9073e54ea799b0e19f22f9d5ba65.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/204038">Looking at her portfolio, her designs allude to her Italian upbringing. Glass and mirrored surfaces have been employed to expand the internal volumes, and long curved lines, in a unique champagne finish that is employed throughout over the interiors, draw the eye across the surfaces, likewise expanding the eye line. When asked what helped her stand out from the crowd, she explained that her philosophy is to, “Extreme attention to the details. Following her studies, she launched herself into a hugely successful career with Princess Cruises, eventually joining the design team for their Grand Princess ship, the largest cruise vessel ever built at the time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/201725/image/large-f6672fb7f77a8578737a052280c849ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/201725">This monumental 290-metre vessel was built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/295" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fincantieri Yachts (Company)">Fincantieri</a> in Trieste and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giuseppina Arena (Company)">Giuseppina</a> worked very closely with the team, gaining knowledge of prefabrication and construction management. This experience lit the embers, and she moved to the yachting industry, wishing to learn more about the construction process from both the shipyard’s and the clients perspective. She joined the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine S.p.A. (Company)">Intermarine</a>, working on the interior design for their fibreglass yachts, whilst also producing designs for fast patrol boats for the Italian military.&nbsp;Following her stint at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine S.p.A. (Company)">Intermarine</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giuseppina Arena (Company)">Arena</a> joined the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a> in Genoa as Head Architect in Lavagna, responsible for the design process from start to finish, collaborating with an array of external architects. Yacht series such as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a> 35 and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a> 32 are the result of Arena’s tenure at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a>, and though they belong to a series, every vessel was a one-off and a demonstration of her eclectic portfolio. As fast, aluminium yachts, these vessels posed a unique challenge to her design team, managing the weight of the interior outfitting, as to not unbalance the carefully engineered vessel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/201728/image/large-27cc992713d879e5faf8085e79db0235.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/201728">Toward the end of her time at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giuseppina Arena (Company)">Arena</a> was contacted by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> for the role as Head Architect and Designer for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing Shipyard</a>, an opportunity which she embraced completely. Working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a> for many years, yachts such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2317" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="La Cima III35.37m (116'1&quot;)Pershing S.p.a.2010">La Cima III</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3588" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kuikila35.37m (116'1&quot;)Pershing S.p.a.2011">Kuikila</a>, both belonging to the 35.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a> 115 series, are a testament to that work.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/201730/image/large-0bf9b10096c4b383baa72e22d652e48b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/201730"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/201724/image/large-90ba5daffb19a32ac3c0882b4dc989b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/201724">During her years with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>, she also worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line Spa (Company)">Custom Line</a>, and after a number of years they proposed that she relocate to the US to head up the American market, designing yachts arriving from Italy as inventory. It was here in America that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giuseppina Arena (Company)">Arena</a> decided to open her own firm and put her own name on the projects she designs, something she now wishes she had done earlier.
