Amsterdam-based designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5109" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isaac Burrough Design (Company)">Isaac Burrough</a> revealed his latest design project today inspired by the Māori guardian of the ocean. Named Kiwa, the 110-metre concept puts a strong focus on sustainability, with an energy-efficient setup and low-volume design to help lower Kiwa’s footprint wherever she goes.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/167979/image/large-dd1b9efdf18daf1937efe0e9ce4ca880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167979">A hybrid propulsion system allows Kiwa to cruise in an Electric-only mode in order to explore sensitive marine environments, leaving only her wake behind. 200 square metres of solar panels on the forward superstructure provides enough power for the crew’s daily energy usage and the hotel load on board. Kiwa’s slim hull design that only measures 15.5 metres across along with a relatively low volume-to-length ratio makes this yacht more economical to propel at higher speeds.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/167978/image/large-6b616d28e5f32d11e93d6efc0b8c18e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167978"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/435292771" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe>“The intention for Kiwa was to design a yacht that is both modern and elegant," comments her designer. On the lower deck, light from the glass pool above fills the full-beam beach club where guests can relax on built-in sun loungers that overlook the massive swim platform. When the team at Lateral presented their platform to me, and the flexibility it offers, I realised that this was a great opportunity to rethink the entire paradigm of a typical yacht layout.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/99099/image/large-4311bb30440a506371ee072f4966b35f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/99099">Project&nbsp;Inception’s primary source of onboard power is what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> calls E-Hybrid, a system which can easily meet the varying power demands of a modern superyacht. Diesel engines are provided for battery recharging only, and the system enables diesel generators to be selected purely on the basis of efficiency and optimum energy density, which brings a whole host of advantages including architecture efficiency, flexibility of layout, and operational effectiveness. It is at the heart of what engineers, designers, yacht builders, equipment suppliers and a whole plethora of our industry do every day. However the pace of innovation is progressive, it is a long-term game and generally delivers benefits in an incremental gains approach. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> believe that over the long term, the progressive development of technical innovation may deliver up to 20% of the progress to Zero.Challenge The Paradigm (#AskNewQuestions)Take a look at the world’s superyacht fleet, aside from a highly diverse range of adventurous and iconic styling, unique lifestyle features and artisan interiors, the yachts all follow a similar technical format. That similarity is reflected within the statistical data of principal dimensions, gross tonnage, general proportions and form - which, if these factors were challenged, can easily deliver 30% of the progress to Zero in a short timescale and at low technical risk.&nbsp;Before exploring the matter of ‘alternative fuels’, it is possible to get 50% of the way towards Zero.Alternative FuelsAlternative fuels hold the promise of achieving the full 100% required to get to Zero. It is possible to engineer and build a yacht today that would achieve Zero, with relatively low technological risks. However, it is the operation that presents the barrier, as the mechanism to deliver alternative fuels across a prolific and well-established distribution network remains embryonic.&nbsp;One of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>’s visions for the future, based around the use of hydrogen, is that electrical energy generated via renewable sources is transported via the land-based grid, and converted locally at the point of distribution to hydrogen. Exploring the bolder side of superyacht design, both in size and architectural features, designer Isaac Burrough has released his studio’s latest concept this week. The 100-metre motor yacht project is an experiment by the Amsterdam-based studio in working with large surfaces consisting of straight lines and hard angles to deliver a powerful yet simple look.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/46412/image/large-ad0bb0771134969486ffeb24f3e78003.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46412">A massive raised bow with a freeboard of 11 metres was the starting point of the design and also works to carry the tough presence of the rest of the project’s angular shapes. This is also one of the most innovative areas of the design with a window section that spans two decks and creates an awesome floor-to-ceiling effect inside the owner’s cabin that is located here. “The yacht owes part of its powerful aesthetic to its cab-forward stance,”&nbsp;comments Burrough. “This has the effect of shortening the bow and increasing the aft deck areas, with more useable outdoor space and good wind protection.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/46419/image/large-bd4e2564218a8a21b8e41fd5bcdf038f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46419"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/46414/image/large-39bfeeb524fe6ed7de1b5ece8237736c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46414">A three-storey atrium amidships is flanked by another massive glass section on either side that lets in even more natural light during the day and at night serves as an observatory of the night sky.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/46413/image/large-79ca51376412da78899f438bc8872a01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46413">The 17.1-metre-wide beam is put to good use on the lower deck where the vessel’s beach club is placed. Here, the full width of the yacht extends even further when the two massive side terraces are opened, with a third opening at the stern making this one single waterside oasis where guests can take in nearly 360-degree views.
