She began life in 1978 as the 166-foot Seattle-based crabber Fierce Contender. “In 2007, she was purchased with the idea of converting her into a support yacht,” shared Captain Tony. “The goal was to carry helicopters, smaller boats, and toys – everything from jet skis and e-foils to kitesurfing gear, kayaks, paddleboards, and ski boats.”Under the vision of Stan Antrim and designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/868" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Joseph Artese Design (Company)">Joseph Artese</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuRi63.4m (208'0&quot;)Halter Marine1978">SuRi</a>’s original pilothouse was preserved, while the freeboard was raised and large windows were added. Blending function and luxury, this project set a new standard for shadow yacht conversions. “The conversion worked out really well, turning <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuRi63.4m (208'0&quot;)Halter Marine1978">SuRi</a> into a versatile yacht with everything you need for water sports,” attested Captain Tony.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/344127/image/large-739034e0746c5a71e40e381b19397870.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/344127">“In 2011, the owners decided to convert her further, adding cabins and transforming her into a fully fledged yacht,” recounted Captain Tony, who was working on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuRi63.4m (208'0&quot;)Halter Marine1978">SuRi</a> at the time. “We cut her in half and extended her by 11 metres. The new midsection, including glass windows offering views of the ocean floor, was added. The ‘Windows to the Sea’ is one of my favourite features.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2619" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bay Ship and Yacht Co. Of course, the Pacific is always a highlight for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuRi63.4m (208'0&quot;)Halter Marine1978">SuRi</a> – Tahiti, Costa Rica, and the Galápagos are also all incredible places to explore,” commented Captain Tony.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/344100/image/large-ba706838ea5a5f7cd3d8eb3816e99d0c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/344100">Her next summer adventure will take her to Greenland, while winter plans include Costa Rica, Patagonia, and Antarctica. “That’s one of the best things about working on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2673" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuRi63.4m (208'0&quot;)Halter Marine1978">SuRi</a>: you end up going to places you might not have imagined visiting. Take Patagonia, for example: you can have fun with all the water sports and still sit up here, cruising through fjords and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. It gives us the space to showcase everything we have. Northrop &amp; Johnson and Dolphin Yachts have announced that the 35.05 metre sailing yacht Signe has been sold. Built by the US shipyard Renaissance Yachts in 1989, she features naval architecture and exterior design by Bruce King Yacht Design, whilst Joseph Artese Design were responsible for her sophisticated interiors. Launch and christening of Miss Lisa

Joseph Artese Design has announced that the last of the refit installations are completed and the vessel, Alucia, is ready for service. Transformed from her previous life as the French built submarine tender Nadir, Alucia is a totally new vessel with a unique new mission. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/128463/image/large-086684e6178be7250677a7a03fc9b586.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128463">The artistic sculpting of her VIP decks by Joseph Artese Design provides the owner with a unique hybrid - a comfortable vessel to live-aboard in yacht quality surroundings that are combined with her prowess as a powerful and efficient exploration vehicle. With rebuild naval architecture from Kirilloff &amp; Associates, the totality and quality of her rebuild has empowered her to do this for at least 30 years. Artese was commissioned by Deep Ocean Expeditions to develop Alucia’s interior spaces and to provide some work on exterior cosmetics. As these clients are passionately involved in the preservation of marine life, are serious underwater documentary film makers and are also avid art lovers, these elements combined to form the inspiration and point of departure for designer Joseph Artese. Artese laid out a whole new bridge deck structure from the pilothouse aft to include a grand salon and dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows which wrap around the aft end of the yacht. Artese chose limestone countertops that resemble the bottom of the sea. Her fundamental interior styling is clean, crisp and contemporary with a subtle undersea feeling involving maple joiner work, brushed stainless steel accents and an abundant use of stone as befitting a megayacht of this caliber. The entire main salon bulkhead is a back-lighted aqua wall. Artese designed a series of two by three foot maple-framed electro-luminescent back-lighted Lumicor panels for this underwater effect. From here, a spiral staircase connects the observation deck above with the salon and then descends to the guest accommodation deck below, with the owner’s and VIP staterooms, four double/triple staterooms for the guests, captain’s cabin, and ship’s office. The original accommodations deck was gutted and the 60’ long, straight, centerline passageway was transformed, expanded and articulated, to create the “Art Gallery” - as a design entity in and of itself - to display the lavish images produced by these deep sea explorers. Each of the staterooms opens on to this “grotto like” artistic display of fascinating marine life. At the aft end of the gallery is the helo-deck that also connects to the lower submersible deck. Guests arriving via helicopter get the first opportunity to view the latest in underwater photography as they pass through on the way to their accommodations and the bridge deck above. Naval architect, Boris Kirilloff, engineered the project and designed a helicopter pad and hangar for both the bird and the subs which track to their respective berths. He also did extensive renovations of the crew’s quarters and science labs. The rebuild was executed by Deep Ocean Expeditions, LLC in Seattle, Washington with A. Joseph Smith from Coastal Marine in North East Florida and crew overseeing. The Marine Artisans Group of Seattle fabricated and installed the interior under the onsite guidance of Jeff Brandewiede. Joseph Artese designs interior for 185ft expedition superyacht Alucia

Joseph Artese of Joseph Artese Design shares his thoughts regarding the metamorphosis of a Seattle crabber to a superyacht shadow type boat. “My first contact with SuRi’s inspiration and builder, Stan Antrim, came when he was captain of the megayacht Lady Lola and was looking to develop a toy hauler for the mother ship. I had the opportunity of working with Lady Lola’s owner, as well as Captain Antrim and his team, and did some initial design studies and styling renderings in collaboration with NA Boris Kirilloff on behalf of another builder (Stabbert Maritime) for the initial shadow boat, Lady Lola’s Shadow. “Antrim later started Shadow Boats, Inc. and still later, YES (Yacht Escort Ships International) both of which specialize in conversions. I was instrumental in bringing a likely conversion candidate to the attention of Antrim. She was the 166’ Seattle based crabber Fierce Contender which became the basis for the SuRi refit. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126051/image/large-97f6a54b58f14a23bf8b043c65e024db.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126051"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/126052/image/large-d481d41e04b75027f9cf198c17f0842b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/126052">“In her new life, SuRi was to accompany her owner’s larger yacht, JeMaSa, to carry and garage her helicopter, smaller boats and water toys. “Antrim asked me to do the exterior styling retaining the original pilothouse and to try to provide a family resemblance for the duo, as they would be traveling together as a couple. This required hanging new fashion plate on the existing superstructure that would complement the mother ship’s distinctive styling and doing everything else that would make SuRi a more attractive yacht. “But you can do just so much with simple cosmetics.” “To my thinking, the most disturbing feature of these shadow type conversions to date had been the ungainly appearance of the new helicopter pad and hangar on deck which yielded a look ‘rather like a huge bread box on a barge’. “My desire was to transform this vessel’s appearance from a work boat to a well proportioned yacht. To do so meant a primary task of “visually” lowering the height of the hangar. Of course, we still needed all 16’ for the bird. So I raised the freeboard or bulwarks along the entire length of the hangar by 6’. This brought things into a better proportion and allowed me to design windows in the sides of the hangar that looked more like large windows in a dining room or saloon. “The only problem with this scheme was that adding all that steel to both sides of the boat might be hard to sell. The solution became designating this ‘extra volume’ as much needed stowage and locker space accessible from inside the hangar; thus, the concept flew. “This technique of disguising the height of the helo hangar by raising the relative height of the freeboard will likely become a standard on future conversions.”

A conversation with Joe Artese of Joseph Artese Design about the motoryacht SuRi

Joseph Artese Design today announces its role in the interior design and styling of Miss Lisa, a 92’ steel-hulled expedition motoryacht nearing completion at Aleutian Yachts, Inc. in Tacoma WA. She is owned by an East coast couple who will spend half their time aboard the vessel cruising from Maine to the Caribbean. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125314/image/large-deea899af51c432d937d66293a8c0144.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125314">“These young professionals love to cook and Aleutian Yachts ‘Grand Galley’ layout will be the prime social center of the yacht,” says Seattle designer Joe Artese who was hired to give his very custom touch to this three deck yacht. A relaxed but finely detailed traditional interior rendered in anegre with recessed panel joinery, teak and holly soles and tongue and groove overheads was the choice of the Artese team who worked closely with the owners to integrate all details including soft goods. In keeping with a simple, traditional East Coast feeling, the fabrics throughout the yacht are clean, crisp white or navy with accents in navy or French blue. Polished nickel on lighting and accessories plays off the warm anegre, rich black granite and the Carrara marble in the owner’s bath suite. The owner’s stateroom is luxuriously spacious and Miss Lisa has generous accommodations including two guest staterooms and a VIP stateroom all with en suite baths. Crew quarters are well thought out and feature two double crew cabins with en suite heads and shared shower as well as a comfortable crew lounge with galley and TV. Aft of the wrap around command consol with its state-of-the-art electronics, traditional chart table and settee, the bridge deck also has a sky lounge with L-shaped couch, full service desk with file drawers, cubbies and book shelves, a 46” TV and of course, a 360 degree view. A late summer launch is expected.
