Fourth 50m Mangusta 165 REV yacht launched

The 50m Mangusta 165 REV yacht has been launched, marking the fourth unit in the flagship Maxi Open series.

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6426" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kongsberg Maritime (Company)">Kongsberg Maritime</a> is formally on track to become an independent company after shareholders of Kongsberg Gruppen approved the separation at a general meeting held on Thursday 22 January 2026.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383681/image/large-5977d871f412d5d2d4d128c36e6cbbee.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383681">The move will see Kongsberg Gruppen ASA split into two distinct entities, with Kongsberg Defence &amp; Aerospace and Kongsberg Discovery coming together to form the new KONGSBERG, while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6426" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kongsberg Maritime (Company)">Kongsberg Maritime</a> will be spun off as a stand-alone company, operating independently from the group. The maritime technology specialist is scheduled to be listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange on 23 April 2026.According to Kongsberg Gruppen, the decision marks a key milestone in a process first announced on October 30, 2025. The superyacht sector is often touted as a hotbed of innovation, but not many new ideas make it into the mainstream. From innovative rigs and biomimicry to topological hull design and energy recovery, they need owners with deep pockets willing to take a leap of faith – and that’s easier said than done. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361651/image/large-f85f6aadfc87033d06eec52838e00f3c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361651">When the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> first took flight in 2006 she proved a point: that when a pioneering owner – in this case Tom Perkins – is willing to push boundaries with designers and engineers to explore innovative ideas, the superyacht industry can realise ground-breaking solutions that have either laid dormant for decades, or open up new tech for future decades.Fast forward almost 20 years and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> also teaches us that even with proof of concept, some ideas still struggle to break through to the mainstream. The Dynarig, developed from the original 1960s concept designs by Wilhelm Prölss, wouldn’t be repeated until the launch of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a> in 2017. The confirmation last year of a 57-metre Dynarig catamaran in build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Echo Yachts (Company)">Echo Yachts</a> in Australia only highlights the slow uptake.&nbsp;“Now that there are two demonstrators for the Dynarig we see momentum catching up,” says Mark Leslie-Miller, partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> that developed the Dynarig together with Damon Roberts of Insensys and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>. “I still wouldn’t go as far as to say that the entire industry is getting more adventurous, although I’d like to think that is the case.”In the same year that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> was delivered, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> unveiled the first of its Future Concept designs at the Monaco Yacht Show. Developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt Naval Architects</a>, the idea behind the ongoing series was to develop concepts that blended <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> yacht-building experience with the boldest visions that have yet to see the light of day. From the beginning these concepts were required to meet one key criterion: they had to be buildable within five years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361648/image/large-bc6b13e7e5a07984361900f624d3ec88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361648">From morphing decks and clean propulsion systems to reimagining space design and underwater viewing lounges, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> concepts have covered a lot of ground and quickly proved their value. The F-stream concept, for example, set the stage for the energy-efficient drivetrain on Breathe in 2010, which in turn was a direct inspiration for the hybrid-powered <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5598" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Savannah83.5m (273'11&quot;)Feadship2015">Savannah</a> just five years later.&nbsp;Fauna and FloraBreathe also drew on another major theme in everything from its superstructure shell design to its propulsors and appendages: biomimicry. Biomimetics – drawing on nature’s evolved solutions to inform structural engineering, energy efficiency and other elements – can be traced back to ancient times. Since then, it has gathered pace – the Eiffel Tower is said to be based on the human femur; the Crystal Palace built for London’s Great Exhibition in 1851 drew on the structure of waterlily leaves to support its 300,000 panes of glass; and Velcro was invented when Swiss engineer George de Mestral studied the small thistle-like burrs that became stuck in his dog’s fur.Breathe’s superstructure took the concept of skin temperature variations found in a zebra’s stripes to encourage natural air flow and ventilation, but the design also borrowed from marine fauna in its underbody, applying the idea of tubercles – the knobbly protuberances found on the leading edge of humpback whales’ pectoral fins – to increase lift and efficiency of the rudders.Tubercles have been shown to act as passive-flow control devices in wing form that improve performance and manoeuvrability, and as such are being explored for a range of applications from wing design to turbine blades. For Frank Fish, marine biologist and professor, the first awakening came in the early 1980s when he noticed the leading-edge bumps on a humpback whale model in a gift shop, which made no sense compared to what he knew about fluid mechanics and having a straight leading edge. Intrigued after studying the fins, he reached out to mechanical and aerospace engineer Philip Watts.&nbsp;“I had already been working in biomechanics so understood the importance of biomimicry,” says Watts. “So I ran some fluid dynamic simulations of wings with and without tubercles and found they increased the lift, and simultaneously reduced the drag – and that’s a spectacular achievement. Tubercles focus the flow between the bumps, and that focused flow helps keep the flow attached to the wing while also helping isolate the lift between the tubercles.”The pair joined forces with late entrepreneur Stephen Dewar to form WhalePower Corporation in 2005. Further testing on wing prototypes showed 20 per cent energy savings, improved efficiency, more stability and greater durability.It’s not hard to see the potential applications in yachts, from stabiliser fins to HVAC fans – and propellers. Various research projects on the latter have shown the potential benefits, particularly with regard to cavitation, which both damages propeller blades over time and is a key factor in the propagation of underwater radiated noise (URN) – now a key focus of marine environmental regulations. For example, numbers published by the ABM Hydro (Applied Biometrics Marine Hydrodynamics) group at the University of Newcastle show reduction in cavitation volume in a ducted propeller by up to 50 per cent, while improving propulsive efficiency by up to 6.5 per cent in heavy-cavitating conditions.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361646/image/large-4facd959dfdf51c7ad17a2b7a326422c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361646">Tubercles are not the only bio-inspiration making their way into yachting propulsors. In early 2023 Oceanco unveiled its 131-metre concept Aeolus, which features <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6143" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ABB Group (Company)">ABB’s</a> Dynafin electric propulsion technology. The Dynafin is a cycloidal propeller system that was inspired by the dynamic motions of a whale’s fluke. It generates thrust using profiled vertical blades that rotate around the axis of a disc plate and around their own vertical axis to change the angle of attack in sync with the rotation of the plate, so that each blade can provide thrust in any direction. Adrien Thoumazeau of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a> calculates that the Dynafin would save 10 to 15 per cent of fuel on an Atlantic crossing for Aeolus compared to an optimised azipod system. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> also prescribed Dynafins for its 2023 Dunes concept and is working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6143" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ABB Group (Company)">ABB</a> engineers to develop improvements for better integration in a yacht.&nbsp;The VSP draws on a concept first developed nearly a century ago by Austrian engineer Ernst Schneider, who was inspired by the movement of fish. Cycloidal drives like the Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) are a simpler version insofar as the individual blades are fixed. VSPs are in use on working vessels and have been proposed for the 70-metre Project Master conversion at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">Icon Yachts</a>, but Dynafins potentially have more applications in superyachts. As part of an electric propulsion power system, they are also fully compatible with zero-emission technologies.&nbsp;“Due to the individual blade control you can mimic the whale-tail motion, providing the efficiency gain when sailing at the most probable speeds of 12 to 15 knots,” says Giedo Loeff, head of research and development at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>. “The VSP works well for low-speed applications and high bollard pulls, like tugboat operations.”&nbsp;Formally unveiled in May 2023, it remains to be seen if the Dynafin will catch on, but it is further evidence of the opportunities buried in millions of years of evolution.Skeleton StructuresIn 2015, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> and Claydon Reeves unveiled a striking 46-metre sailing yacht concept called Exo, which featured extensive use of glass in the hull thanks to an extraordinary hull structure quite unlike traditional frames and longitudinals. The idea originally came from a German intern specialising in topology optimisation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361644/image/large-a3f603df772cec0588d5b591bb16aed1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361644">“He got inspired and asked if we could see an application for this cool new technology,” &nbsp;says Leslie-Miller. “It led to us tackling that structural challenge of having a large piece of glass in the topsides and deck and using topology optimisation to design around the stresses inherent in a sailing yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361649/image/large-76bcca2920aac1749a6690880f76b549.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361649">Topology optimisation is a mathematical approach that optimises material use within a given design space for a given set of loads and boundary conditions. By combining this with the idea of bio-inspired design, it is possible to create unconventional structures that combine light weight with structural strength. The study partner for Exo was the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany, whose research has focused on the complex shell structures of diatoms, unicellular planktonic organisms, and their application in structural design. The result was an initial implementation in 2005 of ELiSE (Evolutionary Lightweight Structure Engineering) as a systematic approach to design. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra</a> team inputted data on load paths through components such as the stays, shrouds and keel box, and then let the software do its magic. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361650/image/large-d3c964305471d63f17a7908b0b70b8d1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361650">“What we saw very clearly was that a lot of the force goes into the beam shelf, which is generally a very stiff element,” explains Leslie-Miller. “The challenge was that we wanted to have a big glass opening across that boundary, so the topology optimisation was used to lead the forces around that glass. From that we did a full FEM analysis of the structure, which showed that this was a very effective and efficient way to make this particular concept feasible.”Leslie-Miller admits that the combination of topology optimisation and biomimicry for the overall hull structure won’t replace conventional design outright, in part also because of the added cost, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have interesting applications aside from alternative hull designs. One area might be large bimini structures, which need to be lightweight but can be tricky to design because there are several load conditions to consider. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361643/image/large-6fa88f4b3be1f9c5529d29febdd8b2b6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361643">“I think wherever there is a clearly defined set of load cases it could be super interesting,” he says. “For example, in a retractable keel that always presents a structural challenge with clearly defined load cases such as grounding with the keel fully down. You could optimise the structure around that load path to make it as lightweight as possible.”Ride the WavesWith energy efficiency and carbon neutrality ever higher on the agenda, Giedo Loeff is proposing the Hammerhead – a pair of retractable fins located aft of the anchors that serve as stabilisers, but also harness wave energy to feed into the yacht’s grid. The idea features alongside the methanol hybrid fuel cell and battery power system in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> latest concept project, 75-metre C.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361654/image/large-2de9a6282637ddae101f7c201b682a6e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361654">“When I was working at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) back in 2007, I was investigating how to regenerate wave energy,” says Loeff. “There are ship’s motions that are excited in waves, and the Holy Grail is to be able to reduce those motions and generate electricity at the same time. But designing a system like that is not so simple, which is what this concept is about.”Complicating the design is the fact that the fins have two axes of articulation – rotational, which is the conventional way a stabiliser fin adjusts its angle of attack, but also vertical, which provides the motion that can drive a generator.&nbsp;“There’s a massive force associated with the movement, because in the foreship where the fins are located their motion relative to the water will be quite substantial in any significant sea of, say, one to two metres, which is a very probable scenario,” says Loeff.&nbsp;There are further benefits of the system, because besides reducing motions and generating electricity, you’re also reducing resistance – energy is lost in the motion of a ship, so reducing that motion means less propulsion power is needed. Loeff’s solution would primarily be for use under way as opposed to at anchor, and it would be a standalone active system that would negate the need for separate stabilisers.&nbsp;“The mechanical design presents the difficulty, because you would &nbsp;have very high torque and forces acting on the bearing systems,” he says. “You would need to control the angle of attack of the fins to prevent a stall and ventillation, and that would need to be active control based on the motion, so it won’t be easy, but it’s not something we feel is impossible.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361655/image/large-ec523e473842f77cdd02df4d25d6b0bd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361655">Loeff suggests that yachts between 40- and 100-metres are the ideal platform for the technology as they fit into the typical wavelength of seas that yachts most commonly come across. The predictions for energy produced are also striking: 60 to 80 kilowatts for a yacht like C in the seas it would encounter on an Atlantic crossing, plus a further gain in propulsive energy. (Company)">Nauta Design</a> has unveiled the renderings for a 74.85-metre superyacht concept, the XP75. Based on a client brief, the XP75 is a mature project that is ready to start construction. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308130/image/large-73457e5a935e69543c9814c09b9c1d83.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308130">The XP75 yacht features engineering from the drawing boards of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure Naval Architects</a>, and comes complete with a 200-page specification document. This advanced design and planning allows for the concept to begin building immediately.&nbsp;The XP75 yacht is characterised by a rugged and masculine exterior design, with gently inclined windows. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. Is the custom nature of a superyacht a definitive barrier to adopting robotic automation in the build process? As Industry 4.0 reshapes manufacturing processes across the board and robot technologies evolve, the answer might not be as straightforward as you think.Something big is happening in manufacturing. It has been labelled Industry 4.0, otherwise known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and it’s all about bringing further automation to manufacturing processes. We know of the rise of the machines in the automotive sector (who can forget Fiat’s classic ‘Hand Built By Robots’ TV ad campaign in the late Seventies?), but since the 1980s commercial shipbuilders have also been adopting these new technologies. Programmable welding robots, for example, were a natural progression from automotive applications centred on rinse-and-repeat actions for the mass production of standardised parts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297088/image/large-94838588aeac299c922440b543cf97c0.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297088">Most large-scale leisure yacht builders today use some form of automation, whether it is multi-axis CNC machines for the preparation of moulds or components, large-scale table cutters for producing build components from sheet materials, or automated spray booths for interior fit-out and furniture components. Groupe Beneteau has started to adopt robots to apply gelcoat, while others such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere Nautico Cranchi (Company)">Cranchi</a> use overhead Kawasaki robots for cutting and spraying fibreglass and top coat on yachts up to 24 metres.Robotic automation and assembly has become an obvious path for companies making repeatable, high-volume products, from engine manufacturers to jet-ski companies. Genmar took it a step further (before eroded sales sent them into bankruptcy in 2009) with its Virtually Engineered Composites (VEC) hulls that promised a hull in an hour and the capacity to produce 20,000 small boats a year on an automated production line.&nbsp;Surface tensionAutomating the filling, fairing and painting process for superyachts presents a series of challenges, not just because of the size and complexity of a yacht’s hull, but also with regard to the quality of finish. In the commercial sector several companies are developing automated painting robots that can crawl the hull, removing old paint and adding new, with the added advantage of handling overspray. Palfinger’s Hull Treatment Carrier is one example, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AkzoNobel (Company)">AkzoNobel</a> recently invested in Dutch start-up Qlayers that is building hull and topside crawler paintbots for the commercial sector (perfect for working vessels but unlikely to pass muster for superyachts).Robosurf’s solution starts with a complete 3D hull scan to calculate how much filler is needed at any given point to produce an even skin. The robot applies filler to precisely the right thickness, meaning minimum filler is used in the application process. It is also capable of fairing the filler, although that requires some clever software engineering to compensate for the vibration of the robot. It can also apply paint &nbsp;and the company produces robotic painters for the construction industry, but getting the superyacht industry to adopt that tech will likely prove more challenging. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297083/image/large-423302707b5fcb7599fbd69718c48032.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297083">Late adoptersBut pundits argue that superyachts are very different. They are not consistent like small series boats or the block assembly of large ships, so the processes cannot be automated, and robot welders cannot access spaces like fuel tanks that humans can.“Shipyards are very much behind in digitisation and automation when it comes to production – they are very late adopters, which I can understand because it’s such a sensitive topic,” says Patrick MacHill, partner and co-founder of Robosurf, which has developed automation technology for surface finishing and paint application in the yachting segment. “On the other hand, there’s never been a better time because the technology is there, it’s proven and there are so many benefits.”Benefits include improved efficiency and sustainability. In filling and fairing, for example, the robotic process is more precise, uses less material and has less wastage than conventional filling and fairing by hand. Moreover, it can cover up to 10 square metres per minute, which represents a huge time saving over conventional methods.Robosurf brought its solution to market in 2019, the same year that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AkzoNobel (Company)">AkzoNobel</a> brought out its Awlfair SF spray filler. It was perfect timing. Robosurf took an industrial robot and combined it with a steel frame on which the robot arm could move up and down to cover up to 17 metres vertically. They have since combined this with a second robot that adds mobility to the unit for horizontal freedom of movement.&nbsp;Using a 3D map of the hull, the operator can instruct the robot where to apply filler. Robosurf says the scanning of a 70-metre superyacht hull it undertook in Ancona early in 2023 took less than a day. Once the robot has been primed with the surface map information, it can cover up to 10 square metres a minute – a significant time advantage for what typically can be a very long and labour-intensive filling process.One of the limiting factors is the cost of the equipment – €1 million or more In the case of the Robosurf solution. It is a big number for a yacht builder with relatively small output, but MacHill is convinced that it can offer a very quick return on investment when the numbers are crunched and refers to the 70-metre hull by way of example.&nbsp;“The complete filling and fairing could take a year or longer, with 20 to 25 man hours per metre,” he says. “But if it costs between €800,000 and €1.5 million to complete that process, depending on where you are, that still means a RoI [Return on Investment] within a build, or maybe two.”The efficiencies in terms of material used and time saved are considerable. Further, for some yards it might make sense to rent the robots rather than buy them outright, and Robosurf plans to offer leasing from a few days up to 36 months. There are also plans to offer upgrades via what Robosurf calls app kits, which combine hardware components (the sanding tool, for example) with the software needed for the robot to use it.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297085/image/large-e37e820ddde3bc698c11ce969c47a990.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297085">ExoskeletonsWith medical and military applications the key drivers for development, exoskeletons are a relatively new entry to the industrial sphere. But when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2477" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering CO., LTD (Company)">Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering</a> unveiled its trials with full robotic exoskeletons in 2014, the potential was plain to see as the powered exoskeletons enabled yard workers to perform superhuman feats, such as carrying 100-kilogram pieces of metal with ease. Fast forward nine years and the technology has become commonplace with companies such as Ekso Bionics and Ottobock offering solutions for a variety of industries.&nbsp;Exoskeletons typically come in two varieties – actuated and passive. The former feature some form of power assistance, whereas passive solutions typically offer positional support or mechanical assistance to reduce fatigue when, say, working with your arms overhead for long periods. The tech has already made its way into superyacht construction. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen Yachts</a> has introduced exoskeletons for some of its workforce after trialling equipment from Rotterdam-based manufacturer Skel-Ex. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has also adopted exoskeletons for its workforce, using Ottobock’s Paexo Shoulder.&nbsp;“Our employees have to perform lengthy and difficult overhead tasks such as welding, electrical wiring and painting,” says Erik Slomp, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s yard manager. “They’re delighted, because using the Paexo Shoulder not only gives them the necessary support to continue performing these strenuous tasks throughout the day, but is also very comfortable to wear.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297087/image/large-4b5eca16dbefebb7cef32a44c205e6dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297087">Collaborative robots&nbsp;Cobots – or collaborative robots – are a new type of robot that are starting to offer manufacturing opportunities. They are small, light robot arms that have been designed specifically to work alongside humans rather than separate from us. They can be programmed and controlled through smartphone apps and can be taught routines intuitively, meaning you do not have to have an army of programmers to use the tech. With multiple interchangeable tool heads they could be used for everything from sanding wood components in the cabinetry workshop to picking parts and assisting with component building. They also require much less investment than the large industrial robots, typically running to the low- to mid-tens of thousands of euros.“I think this is only the beginning,” says MacHill. “At the moment we are mainly focusing on the hull because it’s a big area that consumes a lot of time, energy and resources. But there is scope for the scanning and digitisation of the superstructure and technical areas which adds value and creates a more complete set of documentation. Then we can think about smaller robots for the smaller areas. This is something that could be developed because the technology is the same – it doesn’t matter if it’s big or small, it’s the quality of the application that counts.”There is also potential for gantry-style robot stations for the platform or series builders operating in the 30-50-metre aluminium- and steel-hulled segment, where hulls and superstructures are more consistent and where robotic solutions could speed up production processes for hull treatment prep and finishing. Moreover, installing automatic storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) could help a shipyard streamline its components and parts cataloguing, particularly pertinent given recent supply chain issues.MacHill emphasises that robots do not represent a threat to human workers, although their jobs may well change. Robots still need to be programmed, and often the people who were doing the job of the robot before are retained in supervisory and quality control capacities. Robots may also provide an answer to another problem that shipbuilding in general faces: the shortage of skilled workers in key trades.&nbsp;“We need open-minded players in all aspects and all fields to come together and work together,” MacHill concludes. “It needs a mental shift, but what they offer and the savings they deliver are amazing – who wouldn’t want this?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297086/image/large-6a937b41d9e6802a7bb424b1f5b1bf05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297086">Anti-foul playRobots have started to appear in our homes and gardens as little autonomous helpers for vacuum cleaning and lawn-mowing. Similar technologies are now being applied for ship hull cleaning in-water and antifouling applications in dry dock. They mitigate the need for humans to get involved with harmful coatings and offer the possibility to rethink how we tackle fouling. Robots, for example, were used to remove the original Chromium 6-laden paintwork using water jets from the Project Master conversion project at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">Icon Yachts</a>, formerly a supply and rescue vessel.&nbsp;CleanROV, Mini-Pamper, HullWiper ROV and the wonderfully named Robotic Hull Bio-inspired Underwater Grooming tool (HullBUG) are all variations on a theme: automated hull crawlers that use vortices or magnets to cling to the hull and gently brush to remove fouling. The use case is potentially strong for yachts, which typically spend long periods at rest when fouling becomes an issue.Leading paint manufacturer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jotun (Company)">Jotun</a> has also joined the hullbot revolution, launching <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jotun (Company)">Jotun</a> Hull Skating Solutions in 2020, and with it the HullSkater robotic cleaning device. Designed to be carried aboard and deployed regularly, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jotun (Company)">Jotun</a> also offers HullSkater as a service rather than an outright purchase. The HullSkater was developed in collaboration with technology specialists including <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6426" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kongsberg Maritime (Company)">Kongsberg</a>, Semcon, DNV-GL, Telenor and key shipping companies, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jotun (Company)">Jotun</a> claims that if all ships converted to the tech it would have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40 million tons per year.&nbsp;“Moving away from traditional, reactive methods of managing fouling to a proactive approach which will ensure that vessels are always operating efficiently and sustainably, and also conserve the ocean environment,” says Alfie Ong, global sales director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6101" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jotun (Company)">Jotun.</a>This article was originally published in Issue 3 of How To Build It, you can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/magazine/how-to-build-it-issue-3" target="_blank">download the magazine for free here</a>.

The 60-metre Heesen superyacht Ultra G has been moved from the shed as she nears completion.
