Designed to accommodate a helicopter, submersible, amphibious aircraft, large tender and other toys, the one-off explorer is the result of creative thinking, innovative engineering and regulatory foresight.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382209/image/large-2771f737581618f720687db3a9e5b77e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382209"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta Marine</a> in Seattle builds custom superyachts based on a range of full displacement, semi-displacement, and high-efficiency hull forms tailored to match the long-range or higher speed needs of its clients.Ever since brothers Jack and Ivor Jones set up the shipyard in 1967, originally to build fibreglass fishing vessels, it has been known for its use of advanced composites – sometimes in combination with steel or aluminium. Notably, the composite bridge deck of 79.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4814" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonstone79.2m (259'10&quot;)Delta Marine2016">Moonstone</a> (ex-Albatross), at 2,000-plus gross tons one of the largest yachts ever built in the US, was infused as a single piece and then married to the steel hull. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382202/image/large-5f05172c60e3d0876b4732e928e0c85f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382202">Leveraging this expertise and designed completely in-house, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a> is constructed from composite materials based on a proven, full-displacement <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> hull. The challenge was that it had to support the additional weight of all the toys carried on the open decks. These include a Williams 625 jet tender, an Icon A5 light-sport aircraft designed to land on water, a helicopter landing pad on the sundeck, PWCs on the foredeck, a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), and a 3,800-kg, 3-person <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> submarine on the swim platform complete with its own crane system integrated into the deckhead. In the words of The Beatles, Boy, you’re gonna carry that weight.“If you look at all the gear on deck, it's really more comparable to a much larger yacht,” affirms Chris Jones, son of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> co-founder Jack Jones. “So that's been one of the challenges throughout the design and construction process: how do we house all these really fun toys that the owner wants on a boat under 500 gross tons?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382208/image/large-f4c178155f2a7d56d2aa160116ba01d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382208">Weight WatchersIn addition to opitimising volume to achieve 499 GT, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> also implemented a rigorous weight-reduction strategy to preserve vessel stability. Material selection played a key role in ensuring sufficient strength while reducing weight to keep the centre of gravity (VCG) as low as possible.To this end, the hull is made of E-glass, but carbon fibre has been used extensively for the superstructure (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> subcontracts its superstructure tooling out to Janicki, a local supplier that includes Seattle-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5137" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boeing Company (Company)">Boeing</a> on its client list and operates some of the largest 5-axis milling machines in the world). <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/369615/image/large-a63b45f6138e2f5b3330e2da47011714.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/369615">Heating the foam cores and ‘thermoforming’ them into shape eliminated the need for kerf cuts that would otherwise be needed to conform to the mould. These cuts act as pathways for the resin required for bonding during infusion, but excess resin adds significant weight to components. Reducing the amount of resin absorbed by the core material directly translates to a lighter product. The foam-cored interior bulkheads feature large openings to shave off a few more kilos, more like a lightweight, go-fast yacht than a full displacement vessel.Glazing was another weight-critical area. For the first time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Delta</a> is working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Glass (Company)">Tilse</a> for the glass as the German company was able to supply <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7911" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's (Company)">Lloyd’s</a>-approved glass at the lowest weight (it will also have a slight bronze tint to match the paintwork). <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382207/image/large-8ce838ba35bb6eb4f6d8cbd3583da068.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382207">“Every opportunity we can think of to save weight, we explore it,” says Randy Neureuter, chief naval architect. “From a structural perspective, these efforts mean the yacht will be about 15 percent lighter than other vessels we’ve built using the same mould, but just as strong. Considering the additional weight from the added equipment, being lighter up top was crucial for maintaining stability as well as the vessel's overall performance.”Composites offer other advantages, including better inherent resistance to heat transfer than aluminium as well as very low coefficients of thermal expansion for superior dimensional stability across large temperature variations – a plus for a globe-trotting vessel with a dark bronze paint scheme. Nevertheless, heat studies were made to make sure the Dometic HVAC system was up to task and the yacht will also have awnings spanning up to 60 percent of her upper decks for extra cooling shade.&nbsp;“There are lots of published reports as to how hot surface temperatures get between different colours and how that affects the interior temperature,” says marine engineer Dan Filonowich. “The effect can be quite drastic, but is something we can measurably accommodate and factor into the AC calculations, but it does drive the chiller load up slightly. “<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382203/image/large-1081e5dc58d47d91d4b996d8835966b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382203">Charter on my Mind<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a> is for experienced, hands-on owners who have previously owned Inace and Nordhavn yachts. They wanted their first fully custom yacht to be American flagged for chartering in the US, but with the option to switch the flag to a foreign registry later for greater crew options (47-metre Project Ammo is also being built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> with international charter in mind).This created the need for the vessel to meet both US Coast Guard and Cayman Islands certification, allowing it to operate in US waters under the Jones Act, which typically restricts foreign-flagged commercial yachts from visiting consecutive American ports. This focus on charter operations, is something of a departure for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a>, which has traditionally built yachts for private use that sometimes remain under the same ownership for decades. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382205/image/large-d7fa8cdb8e11c11a2be9cf4aa6064d77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382205">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> is excited to have two of its current in-build projects planning to enter the charter market,” says Michelle Jones, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> Vice-President and daughter of the late Ivor Jones. “This not only allows us to share the story of their builds more openly, something we have not been able to do in over a decade, it also &nbsp;gives potential clients the opportunity to experience the quality of a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> yacht firsthand.”While dual certification provides significant long-term flexibility for the owners, it introduced an additional layer of complexity, not least because the yacht has to comply with two sets of emissions standards: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">IMO</a> Tier III and EPA Tier 4.These standards target different pollutants and use different technologies to reduce emissions, adding cost and a larger engine room footprint (making room for all this equipment is one reason why the project was stretched from 45 to 48 metres in length). The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> main engines were chosen specifically because they are dual-rated, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6231" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kohler Engines (Company)">Kohler</a> generators are deliberately sized under 130 kilowatts to keep within Tier III regulatory limits and avoid further after-treatment systems.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382204/image/large-f45d67db11aa5327390d08c5edb10963.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382204">Moreover, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a> had to remain under 300 US regulatory tons, the point when additional rules kick in, particularly regarding notice of arrival (NOA), while also addressing international gross tonnage rules to allow worldwide operation. This required early structural planning and careful envelope control across all decks.&nbsp;“We’re very well versed in how to do all of these things,” adds Filonowich. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> has a history of working with class societies for over 30 years now, so all of these regulatory hoops we have to jump through have become kind of second nature.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382201/image/large-64c0bf8806623090fb6ddba8b7589c7d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382201">Custom CraneOne of the more complex of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a>’s features is her 4,500 kilogram-capacity gantry crane for launching and retrieving the Superyacht Sub 3 from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> on the swim platform. The owner, who is qualified to pilot both the sub and the amphibious plane, requested that the crane disappears completely into the aft overhang on bridge deck. Custom-built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2066" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautical Structures (Company)">Nautical Structures</a>, the crane’s boom extends close to 8 metres out of the deckhead like a passerelle.&nbsp;Integrating the crane into the superstructure required Finite Element Analysis to distribute loads through a network of carbon-fibre beams and local reinforcements in steel and aluminium. The design team also had to consider systems in the lazarette for charging the sub’s battery banks, storage for medical-grade oxygen and external lockers to mitigate fire risk. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382188/image/large-d14fccfd662876cdec02ac69b1b0dc39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382188">“It certainly hasn't come without its challenges,” admits Born Syse, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> project manager. “We’ve spent many hours on video calls with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2066" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautical Structures (Company)">Nautical Structures</a> to make sure the crane itself completely disappears inside the deckhead to maintain good head height and doesn’t detract from the overall design.”&nbsp;JR Marine in British Columbia is building a custom 50-foot aluminium catamaran that will serve as both a chase boat with additional diesel storage and support vessel for the submarine. Equipped with an A-frame crane for sub deployment and recovery, when the sub is in use it will maintain communication and safety oversight during dives.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382189/image/large-fcd8026834a14c41673beac9a6a673cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382189">Push the Green Button<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a>’s layout is conventional for the size of yacht with four guest staterooms on the lower deck (a fifth space serves as a gym). Again with charter in mind, an elevator serves all decks, one of the guest suites is designed for wheelchair access and there are no raised sills between the interior and exterior areas. The main saloon, dining room, galley and master stateroom are on main deck, while the bridge deck houses the sky lounge and captain’s cabin behind the spacious wheelhouse. The open sun deck is set up for al fresco dining dining and there is a hottub forward. &nbsp;The conventional drivetrain is powered by twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> C32 (1,200 horsepower @ 1,800 revolutions per minute) diesel engines. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> has not yet built a yacht with hybrid propulsion or auxiliary battery packs, preferring to simplify operations based on robust engineering and well proven systems, although it keeps a close eye on technical developments.“We have what we call &nbsp;our ‘green button’ philosophy,” explains Michelle Jones. “What does that mean? Basically, a commitment to user-friendly systems designed for simplicity and reliability, allowing captains to prepare for operation quickly and easily, so all they need to do is push the green button and go."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382211/image/large-31fc6c9f9bc7e455a6bac6f3f6b5bed4.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382211"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a> reveals just how much you can pack into a mid-sized superyacht under 500GT, thanks in part to her advanced composite construction – less structural material translates into more space. Energy storage is the ‘in’ thing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/269513/image/large-5e7999d0ba01ee304fa8734c9670addd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/269513">Of course, others paved the way long before these much-vaunted projects. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman’s</a> 42-metre ketch <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/614" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cyclos III42.36m (138'12&quot;)Royal Huisman1990">Cyclos III</a>, delivered in 1990, was arguably the progenitor of it all with a bank of gel cell batteries that allowed her to enjoy a hard day’s sail and a night at anchor free from the generator. And <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ethereal58.04m (190'5&quot;)Royal Huisman2009">Ethereal</a>, another game-changing ketch from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> in 2009, had a hybrid propulsion system that could store 400kWh of energy in a lithium-ion phosphate battery bank.By land and seaMeanwhile, the land-based EV market has advanced in leaps and bounds with batteries delivering ever-increasing range and faster charging. The marine industry follows the EV market, and there are a lot of ongoing developments there in terms of the cells and their chemistries that form the building blocks of batteries. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) systems continue to see improvements and will stay relevant for the foreseeable future, but many of us are waiting for the next big leap in battery technology. Graphene, silicon, solid-state, bio-batteries, and beyond – we’re constantly told we’re on the cusp of the next leap forward. This makes it difficult for project teams to know when to pull the trigger on tech that may be out of date by the time a yacht hits the water.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377921/image/large-29a08e8fa2b9c1137caaa5abc9f090b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377921"> “It’s true that energy density has increased significantly – and is still improving,” says Mark Witjens, CEO of EST-Floattech, the Dutch tech company that develops and supplies energy storage solutions for maritime applications. “For example, we began production on the latest version of our Octopus System batteries two years ago, and already by the end of this year we’ll have an updated version offering a 20 percent increase in energy density. Battery systems need to be considered early in a project, but if improvements are made between ordering and installation, we’ll of course supply the upgraded versions.”However, as EST-Floattech CTO and co-founder Diederick Stam points out, there is a limit in terms of how much you can develop cell energy density:“More energy per cell effectively equates to more current, which means bigger cable sizes – and even if you scale to larger cables that are still flexible enough for installation, you might not be able to get connectors to fit. You can’t just keep on improving in one direction without sacrificing other things.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377922/image/large-6bb063e2c2476da32cecba5dc778f6c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377922">Solid foundationOne of the most promising new technologies is solid-state batteries. These use a solid electrolyte in place of a liquid, which not only has the potential to greatly increase energy density (initial estimates suggest 2.5 times that of an LFP battery, and 1.6 times that of an NMC battery), but also enhances safety as there are no liquids to leak, rendering it less susceptible to puncture damage. It will likely be five years or more, however, before solid-state batteries will even be a menu item for marine use.And it’s not just about chemistry – other technologies are showing some potential. Supercapacitors, which store energy via static charge rather than using an electrochemical reaction, are capable of fast charge and discharge and can hold much higher densities of energy than batteries. They also promise a longer cycle life and less cooling. For instance, supercapacitors are good for quick bursts of power, while traditional lithium-ion batteries are better for longer energy duration. Witjens thinks they could be viable in a much shorter timeframe than solid-state batteries, albeit at a high cost, and pairing them in hybrid systems could be the sweet spot – kind of like having both a sprinter and a marathon runner on the same team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377926/image/large-9ff16a546c99368db90a746e976faddc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377926">“Most people don't realise that the type of battery you need very much depends on what you're going to do with it on board a vessel – they think a battery is a battery, but that's not the case,” warns Witjens. “With all the different chemistries available, you can’t say one is better or worse across the board. Each has its ideal application.”An obvious contrast is between a large battery bank that supplies power as part of a hybrid power and propulsion system on a superyacht, and the demands of an electric tender or toys that may be in continuous use during the day.“Batteries are like people,” he continues. “If you use them a lot and push them hard, they heat up – so you need to cool them. But the type of battery you need also depends on how it’s used. A system with a relaxed cycle – charging overnight and discharging during the day – is very different from one that cycles 15 times a day with high charge and discharge rates.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/284019/image/large-c37173b480ce724a5d6fdaed1374b13b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/284019">Battery managementFundamentally, the system architecture and the battery management system (BMS) that controls everything and that interfaces with the rest of the yacht’s power grid remains the same regardless of the underlying energy storage. Indeed, EST-Floattech has designed its BMS with exactly this in mind, so that no matter the battery technology selected, the interface with the rest of the system is consistent.An energy storage system starts with the individual batteries, each of which has a module controller that monitors each cell within the battery, and several batteries are then linked in series into a string. Strings are joined together in parallel, with each string also having a string controller, as well as fuses for safety and a lot of electronics to manage the strings and make sure they work together properly.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377927/image/large-9063b1570ad77a2f212d9aba261adbb1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377927">“In the case of multiple strings, a system controller is used – and it’s designed to make things easier for the system integrator,” explains Witjens. “They only need to get their PLC [programmable logic controller] to communicate with the system controller, which provides all the necessary data, while the power flows directly from the string controllers into the system. This way, we only need one system that can handle different battery types, and integrators only have to set up their PLCs once.”Last wordsWhen EST-Floattech started out in 2009, a cell with just 700 watt-hour capacity could cost a thousand dollars. Much has changed since then and battery tech will only become more important as the industry transitions into alternative fuels and systems – not least because most of them don’t like load variations, while batteries handle dynamic loads very well.&nbsp;Stam’s advice for anyone involved in a yacht project that incorporates energy storage is straightforward: talk to an experienced battery system supplier as part of the specification process, because the exact combination of AC and DC grids and components these days can be so complex that each operational case demands its own tailored solution. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/276531/image/large-32c3eccfacc8477dced6e216373db7cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/276531">This article was featured in <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/magazine/how-to-build-it-issue-8-download" target="_blank">Issue 8 of How To Build It</a>. This is evident in the latest figures in the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">2024 Asia-Pacific Superyacht Market report</a>, which recorded a 20% increase in visits by yachts over 30-metres since 2022. Annually, more than 400 superyachts have frequented the region over the past two years.As the influx of superyachts continues, the demand for high-quality refit facilities has become increasingly pressing. In February 2024, Giorgio Campini, owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8175" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tecnopool (Company)">Tecnopool</a>, alongside two Thai investors, established a major refit centre in Phuket - the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8078" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phuket Superyacht Shipyard (Company)">Phuket Superyacht Shipyard</a> - to cater to this rising demand. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357189/image/large-7ee656f0fe00349626018caedbf3cdf1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357189">What led to your involvement in establishing a refit facility in Phuket, Thailand?First and foremost, we established the Visun Tuscany refit shipyard in Sanya, in the Hainan province of China back in 2012, in partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Navigo Yachts (Company)">Navigo</a>. This venture gave me a deep familiarity with the Asian market. Subsequently, we planned to develop another shipyard in Shenzhen, directly across from Hong Kong. We had surveyed the area, but the project was halted when the Chinese government intervened to review all concessions. Moreover, the advent of COVID and the increasing complexities in China led us to withdraw. Despite these challenges, we maintained collaborative relationships with regional stakeholders. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357188/image/large-86d7b7e5144ea58835542698328d57ed.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357188">Then, two Thai families from Bangkok, who already owned facilities for commercial ships, sought me out. They had the land and were eager to collaborate in establishing a refit yard, having already begun its construction. During the process, they had realised the need for someone with experience in developing shipyards. They had heard of me through their inquiries in China for a European expert experienced in this industry who could assist with this project.We initiated the project on a new site, constructing a shipyard equipped with an 820-tonne crane, situated in a lush green area near Phuket <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Haven Marina (Company)">Yacht Haven Marina</a>. We opted to focus on larger vessels up to 60-metres, as the area already had refit facilities for smaller yachts. Subsequently, we completed construction and inaugurated the site in February 2024. We have since signed collaboration contracts with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, and have received about 15 yachts since the yard’s inception.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357186/image/large-298e08b34fbc3e5c452c2cc3e1ab9551.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357186">Could you elaborate on the key challenges encountered during the establishment of this facility?The challenge lies in convincing the local community and demonstrating that this represents an opportunity – particularly for Phuket's political and social stakeholders – to promote community development and create employment opportunities for the youth. As a result, there is a significant push for us to establish a vocational school, which we are developing in partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Navigo Yachts (Company)">Navigo</a>. We are also in dialogue with the Minister of Labour to advance this initiative.Furthermore, an entire ecosystem needs to be built, encompassing both relationships and business networks. The challenges are often similar when developing yards in regions lacking well-established infrastructure, yet the people here are exceptionally willing and pleasant to collaborate with.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357191/image/large-c4866accb7e54044e9e44c7035c9074d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357191">How do you ensure that the refit quality standards at the facility match those of Europe, given the logistical challenges of operating in a different region?The first and most delicate operation a shipyard undertakes is the hauling and launching of vessels, which forms the foundation of the process. When a yacht is handled, we ensure it is done to European standards. The equipment we use, such as the travel lift, is from Cimolai, the best in the world. Moreover, the operations are performed by Italian personnel we’ve sent to Phuket, who now live and work there, further ensuring adherence to European standards.Everything else - from the mechanical workshops we are still completing to the layout design of the yard itself, including protections, layout, and construction methods - is modelled after the shipyards we’ve built in Europe. For example, I’ve worked at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/681" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Marine (Company)">Monaco Marine</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>, and other facilities, so the standards of this shipyard replicate those of leading European yards. Moreover, we aim to have all procedures certified by a classification society. We are in contact with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7911" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's (Company)">Lloyd’s</a> or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1453" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ABS (Company)">ABS</a>, as certification is essential to ensuring the quality of our processes.It’s also important to note that the approach to work here is more relaxed compared to Europe. Additionally, having a large travel lift doesn’t mean we can’t handle 25-metre yachts; it provides flexibility and enables us to work on larger vessels.
