While the studio operates in the global market, its expertise is deeply rooted in Italian culture, known for its expression of beauty and pursuit of harmony. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280410/image/large-41a5118706ffc655e38a593ab59c7ed8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280410">How did you become one of the first women involved in yacht design, and what sparked your passion for this particular field?My journey to become an interior yacht designer began during the early stages of my career, when I worked at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luigi Sturchio (Company)">Sturchio Architects and Designers</a>. Handling responsibilities that included attending boat shows and nurturing relationships with shipyards, I found myself deeply drawn to this industry. After a successful collaboration on the two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> motor yachts, the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1027" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amore Mio 252.0m (170'7&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen1997">Amore Mio 2</a> and the 52.09-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vera52.09m (170'11&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen1999">Vera</a> (previously named as Sea Jewel and Airwaves), I made the decision to set up my own design studio in Rome in the early 2000s. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280411/image/large-f7f376d158564de6b1fec85e490ed65f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280411">During those years, the landscape of yacht design was vastly different. As one of the few women venturing into this predominantly male-dominated sphere, I was usually the sole female attendee in shipyard meetings, and faced a scarcity of reference models to draw inspiration from. Yet this position allowed me to forge my own identity and explore my creative vision freely. Over the years, the industry demographics have undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming more inclusive and diverse.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luigi Sturchio (Company)">Luigi Sturchio</a> was a pioneering figure in innovating the world of yacht interior design and he played a crucial role in influencing my career as an interior designer. During that period, the industry primarily utilised mahogany and cherry woods, accompanied by fabrics featuring white and blue stripes, embracing a colour palette that evoked the essence of the sea. Drawing from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luigi Sturchio (Company)">Sturchio's</a> example, I developed my distinct personality as a designer, ultimately leading to iconic projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a>, which revolutionised the perception of yacht interior design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213165/image/large-63f2109c57501d0d15da5336e6ac5876.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213165">You have had the opportunity to work on numerous prestigious projects. Can you share one of your most memorable experiences from this period and what made it stand out to you?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> remains one of the most innovative projects I've worked on to this day. It holds a unique place in my heart and was truly ahead of its time when we embarked on the project in 2008. She was one of the first yachts that aimed to incorporate and emphasise &nbsp;sustainability, a concept that was not widely explored in yachting at the time. Moreover, the owner gave me considerable freedom to realise my ideas, providing a rare opportunity to apply my vision holistically.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213147/image/large-f8065fa21aa7d1c1028f688e722b5d22.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213147"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213156/image/large-09e0bc9f2c13e6a4bbd0e2029f08eef1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213156"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213157/image/large-cd9bce1c9352c3240c3039a86abfb332.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213157">&nbsp;Regarding the design, our main emphasis revolved around the interaction between light and the seamless blending of exterior and interior spaces. Typically, yachts would have innovative exteriors designed by experts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>, but the interiors often remained traditional. Collaborating with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen</a>, who is a good friend of mine, on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> allowed us to break down the boundaries between the two areas and create a harmonious design language that extended from the exterior to the interior, which allowed the interior features to reflect the characteristic expressions found externally. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280401/image/large-274d4a1036c0431a87072f9420369148.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280401">One of the standout features of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> was her extraordinary glass panels, which I conceptualised as dynamic paintings, constantly transforming and enhancing the interior ambiance. Initially, I explored the idea of using Perspex blinds illuminated with LEDs, but soon realised that this would obstruct the breathtaking views outside. Instead, we ingeniously used the stanchions as light sources, allowing a warm and embracing glow to penetrate from the ceiling, creating a beautifully illuminated interior that perfectly complemented the yacht's surroundings. This innovative use of linear lighting was highly appreciated and has since become a trendsetter in the industry, inspiring the design of many other yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280402/image/large-5f0cb7518211ce6b0bb883526784e78a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280402">Innovation extended to other aspects as well, such as the design of filtering zones between saloons and exterior decks. This ingenious concept offered a dual functionality, allowing these spaces to be shared, interacted with, and even enclosed, creating versatile environments that seamlessly transitioned between indoor and outdoor settings. Moreover, using teak both inside and outside, along with these filtering zones, allowed for enhanced natural airflow, effectively reducing the reliance on air conditioning and adopting a more environmentally friendly approach.Could you provide us with some insights into the latest design trends that have recently emerged in the world of yacht design?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280406/image/large-8677abf169687c9e0c48657de8dee75a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280406"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280405/image/large-a9b6cfa05a28f8903c28cb7bac2219d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280405">I find that designing a yacht with the traditional approach from a few years ago no longer holds much relevance. For me, it’s essential to incorporate new concepts and principles related to sustainability. Since 2018, I've been working on designs that aim to change the onboard lifestyle. Recently, scientific calculations have shown that the impact of propulsion is equal to, if not lower than, that of the hotel load. This realisation justified my feeling that while propulsion relies on technological advancements and innovation, interior designers like me can play a significant role in modifying the onboard lifestyle for clients. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280407/image/large-9ef5230bf594b2f12b393043a604f407.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280407"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280409/image/large-1fb324d295df95fdc22ab183f5905afe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280409">For me, luxury doesn't necessarily mean excess and extravagance. Instead, its essence embodies beauty and quality, which should align perfectly with sustainability. My objective is to show clients that they do not have to compromise on anything, but can expand their vision and embrace a luxurious lifestyle, while respecting certain criteria of sustainability. My focus is now centred on this more meaningful direction, where sustainability and luxury can harmoniously coexist, making yacht design not just aesthetically appealing but also environmentally conscious.Can you share some specific examples of how your collaboration with the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>&nbsp;has helped promote sustainability within the luxury yacht industry?I have known the founder and vice president, Vienna Eleuteri since the time of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a>. While luxury in the '90s and early 2000s was often associated with a materialistic mindset of &nbsp;'I have, therefore, I am', <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stella Maris72.1m (236'7&quot;)VSY2013">Stella Maris</a> tried to convey the idea that luxury is about living certain experiences, going beyond mere possessions – something that we should all strive for. It aimed to enjoy luxury while making a significant contribution that involves everyone.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213164/image/large-012461db976f2e60bc6521a431da8d88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213164">Vienna's visionary approach to utilising the yacht for accessing remote locations and gathering water samples for the scientific community, motivated me to think beyond the present and envision a promising future. &nbsp;When Vienna founded the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>, I immediately joined as a partner. Vienna’s dedicated efforts in creating the ideal platform for its establishment and growth made partnering with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a> a natural decision for me.&nbsp;Being part of the foundation has been an enlightening experience, offering me invaluable insights and knowledge. Moreover, I sincerely hope that I have made significant contributions, especially in the realm of interior aspects.&nbsp;Do you have any valuable insights or advice that you would like to offer to other aspiring young designers?Whenever I conduct classes at the Polytechnic University in Milan, I try to inspire students to challenge themselves and perceive yachts as a functioning organism. While aesthetics certainly plays a crucial role, they should be viewed as the “skin” that adorns the vessel. The true essence in designing a yacht lies in ensuring the yacht operates efficiently and harmoniously. Regardless of how well designed the aesthetics may be, any flaws or inefficiencies within will compromise the overall experience.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/230518/image/large-27bd395cd81bb7e7734f52264dd01416.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/230518">In the past few years, there has been a noticeable surge in the development of new design concepts, primarily fueled by the pursuit of uniqueness. In the late eighties, Nabila was sold to the American businessman and 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, who renamed her Trump Princess. Trump mainly used the yacht for business purposes and resold her a few years later to her current owner. Despite her age, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/297" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kingdom 5KR86.0m (282'2&quot;)Benetti SpA1980">Kingdom 5KR</a> has been kept in perfect condition.

Two years after Donald Trump sold his 86-metre Benetti superyacht, Trump Princess (now Kingdom 5KR) in 1991, the man that would eventually be elected as the President of the United States 24 years later, decided to commission a small Spanish naval design firm to create the largest and ‘most beautiful’ yacht the world has ever seen. This is the story of how Oliver Design would have become the go-to designers for super megayachts, had project Trump Princess gone ahead back in 1993.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/163913/image/large-d5586687a168983f259e118dee1f9843.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/163913">Then better known for his global business empire and as successful businessman, Donald Trump approached the little-known Spanish design office of Oliver Design with a simple request: to design “not only the largest yacht in the world, but at the same time, the most beautiful”. In the late 1980s Trump presented a challenge to a select few top designers to come up with designs of the yacht that would replace his current 86-metre yacht at the time. That contract was awarded to the Italian design firm Arté Designers SNC, a team of designers who worked with Luigi Sturchio on the original interior of Nabila (then Trump Princess). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/163915/image/large-e521ac244a1affb41fa7cbb63ca1fcfb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/163915">The project would be built by Amels in the Netherlands and engineered and styled by Sonneveld &amp; Vermaas. Production on this project got underway at the shipyard but only reached a 20% completion stage and in 1990 was canceled by Trump. Reasons for this abondonment are unclear, but the financial difficulties Trump was dealing with at the time most certainly had an affect. It would be another three years before Trump would think about building another yacht.Having received a design fee of $170,000, Oliver Design started the creative process headed by Jaime Oliver himself. Oliver’s son, Iñigo, whose English was far better than that of his father’s, was put in charge of all direct communication with their newest American client. The size of the exterior entertainment areas would have been unprecedented for a yacht of this length, even by today’s standards.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/163919/image/large-093b8056e2ef0db32ff55825afdb6640.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/163919"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/163920/image/large-6b0f8770e6a968fc10ec204c7202c3a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/163920">A few months into the design phase, however, Jaime Oliver was informed that this project too had been scrapped and that construction of the yacht would not go ahead. Some have connected this decision with Trump’s alleged less-than-ideal financial situation at the time with his hotel and casino businesses facing bankruptcy. Superyacht Lady Moura in Hamburg, Germany

A familiar site on the French Riviera, the 105-metre superyacht Lady Moura has left the temperate climate of Monaco behind as she traveled north this winter for a refit and maintenance period in Hamburg. Built by Blohm &amp; Voss in 1990, the yacht that ranks in the top 30 largest yachts in the world comprises of a hefty beam of 18,50 metres giving her a total gross tonnage of just over 6,500 GT. Naval architecture for the yacht was done in-house by Blohm &amp; Voss with her exterior and interior designs having been created by the Italian designer Luigi Sturchio. To date, the interior of Lady Moura remains a closely guarded secret, but is believed to be amongst the most opulent in the world. Here she is seen hauled out onto Blohm + Voss' Dock 10. 

 

In on of the most surprising turn of events in 2016, it was recently announced that fellow German shipyard and the world's largest superyacht builder, Lürssen, will take over the Blohm + Voss facilities. 86-metre superyacht Kingdom 5KR in Antibes, France

The Benetti-built superyacht Kingdom 5KR started out life as Nabila in 1980. She is designed by Jon Bannenberg, with an interior by Luigi Sturchio and at the time of her launch was considered as one of the largest yachts in the world. Nabila was sold to American businessman and newly elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, who renamed her Trump Princess in the late eighties. Trump mainly used the yacht for business purposes and resold her a few years later to her current owner, His Royal Highness Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud - the founder of the Kingdom holding Company. Despite her age, the yacht’s looks have not been altered too radically since her launch. She had a refit at Amels in 1993 where minor changes were made to her exterior, which included small alteration of her aft decks. The yacht is kept in perfect condition, and can often be found spending time in the port of Antibes. Today, the 90-metre Lionheart ranks as the Italian shipyard’s largest completed vessel.
