For the second consecutive year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYacht Times (Company)">SuperYacht Times</a> hosted a half-day seminar on the superyacht new-build and refit sector during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seatec - 2020">Seatec 2020</a> event, hosted in Marina di Carrara and organised by IMM-CarraraFiere in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA). Powered by data from SuperYacht Times’ in-house information system - <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-intelligence" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times iQ</a> - the following breaks down the key findings that were discussed in the three panels. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/110875/image/large-5afff7c6cd83bb210c4eb40cc376e6a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/110875">Opening with a presentation of the key statistics on the world’s superyacht fleet, the refit market and sales of used superyachts, the numbers revealed that the world’s superyacht fleet of yachts over 30 metres currently amounts to roughly 5,090 yachts. New yacht sales throughout 2019 amounted to 162 yachts - which is considerably lower than the 198 new yachts sold in 2018 - and the market segment of 60 to 80-metre yachts showed a favourable exception as sales rose from 11 yachts in 2018 to 17 yachts in 2019. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/113608/image/large-3556bf654778ad10a9f822d736cd8493.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113608">Italian shipyards seemed to dominate the market of new-build yachts of up to 60 metres, constituting a share of 58% of yachts currently in-build between 30 and 40 metres and 52% of in-build yachts between 40 and 60 metres. Regarding the refit market, SuperYacht Times’ intelligence team tracked more than 3,300 yacht refits in the 30-metre plus segment between 2016 and 2019, concluding that Italy is one of the top refit destinations. (Company)">Amico &amp; Co.</a> and Rob Papworth from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 La Ciotat</a> - who offered the audience valuable insights into current trends in the refit sector.The panel members discussed an increased demand for refit works, quicker turnarounds as owners demand results in shorter timespans, and a more professional industry as larger yachts are coming in for refit works. Mariotti Spa (Company)">T.Mariotti S.p.A.</a>, Giulio Pennacchio of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nuovi Cantieri Apuania S.p.A. (Company)">NCA Refit</a>, Marcela De Kern Royer of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">ICON Yachts</a> and Marzio Rucconi of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Shipyard (Company)">Palumbo Shipyards Superyacht Refit</a> were the speakers.&nbsp;The panel discussed the pros and cons of combining new-build and refit work within the same company, how it works in practice, and why shipyards are choosing to combine the two.Within this discussion, the experts explained that the practice began in response to an increase in customer demand. Yet they also emphasised that combining the two disciplines requires a lot of flexibility from shipyards. Refits tend to require a lot of manpower in a short timespan, while working hours on new-build yachts tend to be more spread out.&nbsp;In addition, they also discussed how post-sales services to new-build yachts and refit works on different yachts tend to be completely separate activities by nature, meaning that a shipyard might work on a refit and new-build activities on the same site, while keeping the two as unique entities. In contrast to this, other yards take on a more flexible approach, combining the two activities.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/113613/image/large-2c8ce9801fe81ba1434921122b1e3312.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113613"> Panel 3: Investing in shipyards: a good choice?The third and final panel discussed the various reasons behind shipyard investments, whether they are profitable, and what kinds of investors take the plunge, with Armando Branchini from EY / Fondazione Altagamma, Stefano Talamonti from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider Yachts</a> and Stewart Parvin from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere Rossini (Company)">Cantiere Rossini</a> leading the discussion.&nbsp;The panel regarded private investors with long-term targets as the best types of investors in superyacht refit and new-build yards. Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) were not seen as being very lucrative as the return on investment (ROI) is often not at the level shareholders are accustomed to from other investments. Renewed entry of private equity into yacht building was not completely ruled out by panel members, as there are some private equity funds today which take a more long-term view and are willing to take the plunge. Superyachts Al Said and Fulk Al Salamah in Muscat, Oman

The latest addition to the Omani Royal fleet has arrived in Muscat recently, with the 155-metre Al Said now joined by the recently delivered 150-metre support vessel Fulk Al Salamah. Fulk Al Salamah left the Mariotti shipyard in Genoa in July this year after a construction period of over three years. The yacht is believed to have replaced the fleet’s previous 136-metre support vessel by the same name. Al Said (left in picture) was built by Lürssen in 2008 to a design by Espen Oeino. Until earlier this year, Al Said was considered the largest superyacht in the world in terms of gross tonnage with an estimated volume of 15,850 GT. This photo brilliantly captures the true scale of these two enormous vessels and shows the Al Said-like styling applied to the design of Fulk Al Salamah.

Superyacht Rahil in Palma de Mallorca

Built for a highly private owner by Italian shipyard Mariotti Yachts in 2012, Rahil is one of two 54-metre yachts delivered by the yard, the other one being Sea Force One that was completed in 2008. Her interior, which has never been published, embodies good taste and style and features a variety of teak, wengé and oak, leather, nubuck and linen selected from the collections of Loro Piana, Dedar and Minotti. Rahil boasts an impressive volume of 928 GT and a grand master suite forward on the main deck, complete with large skylight and dual side balconies.

The Omani royal yacht Fulk Al Salamah was recently delivered by Italian shipyard Mariotti as the yacht departed Genoa earlier today with Muscat as her destination. The vessel will join the 155 metre Lürssen superyacht Al Said in the Omani capital as part of the royal fleet which is based in the region. First unveiled in 2014 as project Saffron, reports estimate the yacht’s length at 159 metres.

The yacht is believed to replace a 136 metre support vessel by the same name. The new Fulk Al Salamah shares a number of similar exterior design cues with the 155m Al Said such as her commercial grade finish, aft-swept masts, and large awnings on the two forward upper decks.

Exclusive: Mariotti superyacht Fulk Al Salamah delivered

Italian shipyard Mariotti has historically focused on commercial vessels, with cruise ships forming the larger part of their business. With almost 90 years in the industry, times are changing for Mariotti, and they are beginning to introduce more and more projects that are decidedly more focused on the luxury yacht side of the business. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157906/image/large-90db6cc46971c1214e8fc12c72449df6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130449">We sat down with Giangiacomo Zino, Mariotti’s Sales and Marketing Manager, last summer, who explored the future of the brand as well as hinted at the larger 100+ metre projects of which rumours have been circulating the industry for some weeks.Starting with a brief history of the brand as well as the introduction of a current, and highly confidential project currently in build, Zino tells SYT, “Mariotti started in 1928. We grew up over the years did repairs and then conversions, and then in 1992, we became an official new builder. We currently have a vessel under construction, but I’m afraid we cannot disclose any information about it! The project came out of a competition with other yards.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157907/image/large-3a2fc4e4393efdd51c1b1d9d4d51e2a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153564">Based on Mariotti’s background in commercial ships rather than luxury yachts, the new, secretive project seems well suited to their expertise as, realistically, the vessel seems to be more of a luxury cruise passenger ship than a superyacht. Zino agrees before apologising once more for the lack of details available to the public. “In principle, that could be true, but we have heavy consequences if we disclose anymore.”With the 54 metre superyacht Rahil delivered two years ago, and the iconic Sea Force One delivered in 2008, we asked Zino what superyacht projects the brand are currently working on. He says, “As soon as we delivered Sea Force One it became very famous because it is an eclectic ship. But Rahil is completely different. Rahil is a house, Sea Force One pushes more on the entertainment side. Rahil was a good result, and when we went to the Monaco Yacht Show, we understood that we couldn’t go only with the 54 metres, we had to invest in more.“So at that time we created some additional platforms such as 59, 67, 73 metres while in recent times we have developed the concept for the 38, and 51 metre Sportdeck series starting from two projects realised for offshore use. They are not completed, but from the technical point of view, if an owner says, ‘I want the 51, but with a refined superstructure,’ then we can start, because at least we have done some verification on the stability as well as the speed.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157908/image/large-87ed76fba6c5cdc55cdf8bb0180b61f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157908">In terms of the future, we asked if the yard also want to go over 51 metres - an ironic question in hindsight. Zino replied that not only are they able to build larger, but that it is, in fact, the aim. He says, “Our goal is to break 100 metres. We did some market research and we found that there is a demand for that kind of boat, and from the technical point of view we know everything.” Asked if they have the capacity, he explains, “The two big two yards in Genoa have been merged into one single holding named Genova Industrie Navali, and Mariotti is part of that.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157909/image/large-ddc6f1db75fe9bcec178e86e66ff665d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157909">We asked if owner’s in general seem confident commissioning Mariotti to construct a large yacht. He said, “People have confidence first of all because we have an industrial background. The owner with an industrial counterpart here is ensured that the money of the lease is guaranteed. So we are financially reliable. The second thing is that technically it is our main job, and we manage the company. For the interior, it is our companies that you hire. Insight: Mariotti ventures into new, larger territory

According to the Italian shipping newspaper <a href="http://www.themeditelegraph.com/en/shipping/shipyard-and-offshore/2015/11/12/mariotti-the-prince-choice-for-mega-yacht-IfFFmOeBSLe7H3qWik6SPI/index.html" target="_blank">The MediTelegraph</a>, the Genova based shipyard T. Mariotti has signed a contract to build a 180 metre superyacht for the Saudi Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al Saud. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157102/image/large-ca9217b63a43ef127b589fcf70e9b5b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130449">The shipyard is currently completing the 150 metre + superyacht project Saffron for another client from the Middle East. Like project Saffron, the hull will be built by another shipyard. In the case of the 180 metre new order, it will be either be built by the Cimolai Group or the Visentini Shipyard.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157103/image/large-8ba42427e65f63d7d018e72fd4439b84.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153564">Not much more details are known about the project, other than that she is rumoured to be ready for delivery in 2020 and contracted at € 500 million. Reports about him ordering a new superyacht have been going around for over 10 years. In 2005 the French channel M6 aired a show called Zone Interdite with the Prince. And at one point in the show a meeting could be seen with Andrew Winch and Jonathan Becket of Burgess along with a design of a 171 metre superyacht project by the same designer. By Merijn de Waard

Mariotti to build 180 metre superyacht?

Here are the latest photos of the 150 metre superyacht currently under construction at the Mariotti shipyard based in Genoa, Italy. She is due for completion in 2016, with her hull and superstructure finished already. New photos of 150 metre superyacht under construction in Italy

The Italian T.Mariotti Shipyard has been active in the new construction, and refit business since the foundation of the yard 1928. A minor refit is planned for about 10 days, and will include drydock activities and engine room works.

Two refit contracts signed at T.Mariotti Shipyard

On the 26th of October, we were the first yachting publication to publish about the <a href="#managed-by-application" target="_blank" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/43202">150m+ superyacht</a>, that was enroute to Mariotti to be completed. The yacht has now arrived at the yard in Genoa, where SYT managed to obtain these exclusive photos of the high volume yacht.
