(Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> an exception. Located in Erbusco, near Brescia, in the heart of Italy’s Franciacorta region, the yard is far from the water. This landlocked area is better known for vineyards, yet tucked away among the Lombardian hills, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> produces high-performance sailing yachts and tenders.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382597/image/large-5054c1746d1856362af2f89762d43d1f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382597">Founded in 1987, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> has always specialised in sailing yachts and has delivered a number of projects in this segment, the most recent being, the 23.95‑metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/15794" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Corsara23.95m (78'7&quot;)Maxi Dolphin s.r.l.2025">Corsara</a>, which was handed over to her owner earlier this year.SuperYacht Times Features Writer Enrico Chhibber spoke with Luca Botter, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a>, to explore the origins of the shipyard, its continued focus on sailing yachts, and the projects currently underway.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382591/image/large-084b0b069366f402286a7b0a753e83cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382591">From sailing passion to yacht building“It all began with Vittorio Moretti’s passion,” recounted Luca Botter. “He was the founder and head of the company, and I used to race with him. In 1987, he decided to build a 73-foot sailing yacht designed by Bruce Farr. For five or six years, we competed together in the Maxi World Championship.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382593/image/large-ef423e78ddcc6a729136cdf35be95c7d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382593">That experience gradually evolved into a more technical interest in yacht construction, initially focused on racing sailing yachts. “In those early years, most shipyards were using vacuum-infused resin and epoxy resin under vacuum,” Botter recalled. “Carbon fibre either did not exist or was not yet in widespread use.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> adopted a different approach from the outset, choosing to build with carbon fibre and epoxy resin using Sprint/Prepreg technology. The materials are stored at minus 18 degrees Celsius and already contain the precise amount of resin, allowing for tight control over weight and performance. After lamination, the components are vacuum sealed and post-cured at 84 degrees Celsius in the shipyard’s 40‑metre oven. For the late 1980s, these processes were considered advanced for the sector.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382607/image/large-c063da2d66cf918397dd397684737ff8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382607">A turning point came in 2016, when Moretti stepped back from the business to focus on his other ventures, particularly in wine and construction. By that point, Luca Botter was already a shareholder, having been closely involved in the yard’s development.“I had stepped away for a period, but then returned, eventually taking over the company,” Botter explained. “I did not want to manage things alone, so I asked Giovanni Pizzatti, also an engineer, to join and take charge of the production side.”With Moretti shifting his focus to his wine business full time, Botter assumed full responsibility for the shipyard. “That is how the current structure of the company was formed,” he said. “Even though ownership changed, we haven't altered our direction.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382598/image/large-ca5f7ec96cb4bde6da09db4a0c310705.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382598">Inland production and its implicationsOperating from an inland location imposes certain logistical constraints, particularly in terms of transport. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a>’s facility in Erbusco spans 2,700 square-metres and is technically equipped to construct advanced yachts, but the limitations lie in moving large vessels to the coast.This has a direct impact on yacht size. With 30.5-metres being the practical upper limit, the yard typically works within a range of 15.2 to 25.9-metres. “Building a 30.5-metre yacht is a significant undertaking and requires a different level of organisation, both in the yard and the technical office,” said Botter.In terms of production capacity, the shipyard can usually handle one yacht in the 24.4 to 27.4-metre range alongside another between 18.3 and 19.8-metres. “Beyond that, we do not take on additional projects at the same time,” Botter explained.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382615/image/large-c71a9d8a99d055101472293234945148.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382615">Every yacht is built as a one-off. Even when two vessels fall within the same size bracket, their configurations are never the same. “We built two yachts at 18.9-19.8-metres , both designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A. Bottino Design (Company)">Alejandro Bottino</a>, and they were completely different,” said Botter. “Each owner brings a unique vision.”Clients typically engage the yard from the earliest design phase. If they arrive with a naval architect already selected, the yard works collaboratively, if not, a designer is chosen together. From there, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> manages the development process through to delivery, ensuring each yacht is built for its intended use, &nbsp;whether cruising, racing, or a blend of both.While some clients prioritise performance and others comfort, “the general trend is towards fast cruisers,” Botter notes. “They offer strong sailing characteristics while retaining a high level of liveability.” That trend is mirrored in size expectations. “Most new projects start at 24.4-metres.. It has become the new entry point for many of our clients.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382686/image/large-e4d2119441718a7e05c5ec2a2e1c272b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382686">Beyond sailing: tenders and chase boats&nbsp;While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> is best known for its full-custom sailing yachts, the shipyard occasionally constructs tenders and chase boats, though normally in connection with existing projects. Past examples include a 15.5-metre tender for the 36-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2528" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Viriella36.0m (118'1&quot;)Maxi Dolphin s.r.l.2001">Viriella</a>, a 21.3-metre motorboat built in-house, and a chase boat for a 70-metre superyacht. “We have built yachts of 15.2, 15.5 and 16.2-metres, as well as some motorboats for our 22.9-metre model and a 21.3-metre model of our own,” said Botter. “But we do not have the facilities or logistics to build motor yachts beyond 24.5-metres, nor is that part of our future plans.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382592/image/large-b1edf84300ed59bbbfb58506aae6c400.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382592">Alongside the production of sailing yachts, tenders and chase boats, the yard considered the possibility of developing a more standardised motorboat, but ultimately decided against it. “We were born as a custom builder, and that is what we know how to do,” Botter explained. “Even when we tried to keep things simple, using the same colours and layout, no two boats were ever the same. One had two cabins, another had a higher superstructure, others had different engines or finishes. In the end, we realised we are not structured for serial production. That is not what we do.”What comes nextFollowing the delivery of the 23.95-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/15794" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Corsara23.95m (78'7&quot;)Maxi Dolphin s.r.l.2025">Corsara</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> is now building another sailing yacht of the same length, scheduled for completion in 2026. The exterior design and naval architecture have been developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6261" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Botin Partners Naval Architecture (Company)">Botin Partners</a>, while the layout and technical detailing are being carried out in-house by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a>’s design office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364997/image/large-02b7edf53d126fcffd1ea0d91d226c46.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364997">“The owner wanted to create a distinctive interior atmosphere,” said Botter. “So we brought in a Milan-based design duo to translate those preferences into a bespoke interior concept.” The selection of materials, colour palette and finishings has been shaped through close collaboration with the owner. This level of personalisation differs from the shipyard’s 17.7-metres. sailing yacht currently under construction, where the entire interior design is being developed internally by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a>’s technical team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/376488/image/large-36c1bfdac98ffd0cec87e1b887d1e0f0.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/376488">While its inland location presents logistical challenges, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maxi Dolphin s.r.l. (Company)">Maxi Dolphin</a> has adapted its operations accordingly, transporting yachts by road to coastal ports for launch and sea trials. Rather than expanding into areas that require different infrastructure or production models, the shipyard has chosen to remain focused on what it knows: the construction of full-custom sailing yachts built to individual specifications.&nbsp;

The galley, positioned to starboard, connects directly to the saloon. The cockpit is spacious and functional, divided into two distinct areas: a forward relaxation zone with large seating integrated into the coachroof, and an aft manoeuvring area optimised for crew operations. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364970/image/large-95559c74a14bfc45aeb9cd920584c118.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364970">The stern is completely open, with side verticals angled outwards to discreetly conceal air intakes, shore power connections and other functional elements, maintaining a tidy appearance. These structures also support the helm pedestals. Attention to detail and customisation extends to every feature, balancing aesthetics and functionality in line with the yard’s custom-build philosophy. She is ideal for long passages in the Mediterranean and is optimised for offshore racing. SuperYacht Times takes a look at some of the yachts attending the 2025 edition of PIBS, where members of our team will be present. 

There are very few owner-designer partnerships that have lasted as long as that between Pierluigi Loro Piana and Mario Pedol of Nauta Yachts. SuperYacht Times talks with the Milan-based owner and designer about yacht design and their ongoing working relationship.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35354/image/large-43110dc76298a8e48255670daaa21dd6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35354">Pierluigi Loro Piana’s connection with Nauta dates back some 40 years to when he bought an Avventura 703, a Mini Tonner designed by Andrea Vallicelli and produced by Mario Pedol when he was still a university student. Ten years later, the co-founder of Nauta Yachts sold him a Nauta 54 at the Genoa Boat Show and Loro Piana named her My Song after his favourite jazz composition by Keith Jarrett. It was the start of a personal friendship and professional relationship based on mutual respect and shared values that have resulted in three other sailing yachts named My Song, each bigger and faster than the last, culminating in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">My Song</a>, the Baltic 130 delivered in 2016. Nauta has also designed three chase boats for the owner: two built by Toy Marine and a carbon composite 48-footer recently launched by Maxi Dolphin.&nbsp;“After all this time and so many projects together, Mario and I share an empathy with regard to what sailing yachts should look like and what they are designed to do,” says Loro Piana, known as ‘Pigi’ to his friends. “I have quite clear ideas of what I want and he understands implicitly my likes and dislikes – and has the patience to accept them.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35351/image/large-5bc15ed64fb552d8c769553066251132.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35351">The Italian owner and entrepreneur has always combined racing with cruising. To this end, his yachts are designed to perform on the regatta circuit, but also to be comfortable, safe and easy to sail when cruising with family and friends. His carbon composite&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">Baltic 130</a>, for example, races with square-top main and running backstays, which are swapped out for a pinhead main and fixed backstay in cruising mode. Pop-up loungers in the cockpit’s teak decking provide respite for guests unused to 20 degrees of heel when sailing upwind, and fold down flush with the deck when the race crew is on board. &nbsp;“Whenever there’s sufficient wind, a sailing boat should be sailed,” says Loro Piana. “When I’m racing the boat is most fun and becomes more of a toy. Racer-cruiser or cruiser-racer? It’s a fine line, but one that Mario and the Nauta team understand very well. My priorities have evolved rather than changed over the years, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">130</a> is better set up for cruising than my previous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vera25.42m (83'5&quot;)">84-footer</a>.”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17879/image/large-ec37099384a2ad4a23d384258cb90c4a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17879"> That said, the 40-metre sloop still oozes power and grace. Able to cruise in excess of 15 knots and reach speeds of 30 knots on the plane in full racing mode, last spring <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">My Song</a> won the Seicento Miglia organised by the Yacht Club di Livorno, covering the 600-mile course in light airs in just over three days and crossing the finish line a full day before her closest rival. She followed up with overall victory in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta. But it’s below deck that the yacht reveals her split cruiser-racer personality with an interior design by Nauta that, despite contemporary flourishes, is soberly refined and traditional.&nbsp;“There’s no accounting for taste, but I know that Mario shares my aesthetic sensibility based on classic Italian style,” says her owner. “A boat is a boat, not a 5-star hotel or penthouse suite. Good taste, like a timeless design, is understated.”The Loro Piana clothing range made from the finest wool, cotton and linen is similarly understated. The family is now a minority shareholder in the famous brand that carries its name, but Pierluigi Loro Piana is still the company’s vice-president and his Milan office is brimming with fabric samples. His research into the mechanical properties of linen fibres, derived from the flax plant, led to an unlikely but ingenious solution for the interior of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">My Song</a>: what looks like hardwood veneer is actually a composite material made from linen fibres impregnated with epoxy resin.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/48001/image/large-2fc773f479645741bbd51846837afbce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/48001">“We did dozens of tests to get the right tone and finish, but as a strong and super sustainable natural material it’s ideal for a lightweight interior,“ says the owner, warming to a subject of professional interest. “An added benefit is that it’s also very good at absorbing noise and vibration, which is no bad thing on a carbon fibre boat.”Early on in the design, Loro Piana was keen to integrate the fibres into the hull structure itself, citing a Mini Transat 6.50 prototype built using flax–reinforced composites that successfully crossed the Atlantic. Baltic Yachts ran some studies but eventually advised against applying such an experimental material to a 130-foot super sailing yacht.&nbsp;Between racing and cruising, the owner spends two months or more on board each year. Just after our meeting at the end of June, he was due to start a cruise of Italy’s western coast, taking in Amalfi, Capri, Ponza, Sardinia and Corsica along the way, before transferring to Palma di Mallorca where My Song was to serve as a mothership while he raced his Mumm 30 in the Copa del Rey regatta.&nbsp;“Because the boat is fast in light airs – we can easily cover 100 miles in a day’s cruising – the Mediterranean suddenly seems quite small,” he says. “We’re nearly always anchored offshore in a quiet bay and rarely stay in the same place for more than a day or two. The boat is designed to be independent and the lithium-ion battery pack can run the AC overnight without using the generators, so she’s very quiet.”Loro Piana belongs to a select breed of purist yachtsmen for whom the only way to go to sea is under sail. But the market for large sailing yachts has suffered of late and there have been notable closures, especially in New Zealand, as some builders struggle to attract the younger generation of owners (Loro Piana’s own 84-foot <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vera25.42m (83'5&quot;)">My Song</a> was built by Cookson Boats in Auckland).&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/10875/image/large-2fc0b3a4eef1d0121142e962bf46f8ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/10875">“It breaks my heart when I see yards like Alloy, Fitzroy and Cookson close down due to lack of orders,” says the owner. “Personally, I see a lot of young people who are passionate about sailing, including my own children, and I know some owners who have made the move from motor to sail. For day cruising I can understand the logic of a motorboat, but if you want to spend more time on board you can’t beat sailing. It’s more eco-friendly and, because you’re actually doing something instead of just sitting around watching the scenery go by, much more fun.”&nbsp;Loro Piana gets good mileage from his yachts and kept <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vera25.42m (83'5&quot;)">My Song</a>, his 84-footer, for 18 years before upgrading to the latest iteration, which he is still fine-tuning for maximum performance on the race circuit. He doesn’t rule out a successor to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song39.6m (129'11&quot;)">My&nbsp;Song</a>, but is certainly not in any hurry.“Some owners get a kick out of the whole business and can’t wait to start the next one, but that’s not for me,” he says. “I enjoy the design process and was a regular visitor to the Nauta studio and the shipyard in Finland during the build, but I love using the boat even more. My boats are designed for the long-term and the latest probably represents the sum of my aspirations. But never say never.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/51007/image/large-3bc460d4116695c16c30824d31e59877.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/51007">Throughout our conversation, Mario Pedol is happy to take a back seat, chipping in now and again with a few dates and technical details in his softly spoken way. When asked what he has learned from his most long-standing client, he pauses to gather his thoughts before responding:“Working with an experienced and demanding client like Pigi has been a huge stimulus to design the very best, which is something I try to carry through all our work at the studio,” he says. “He never accepts second best and is always searching out new solutions. With all the digital design tools we have at our disposal nowadays the possibilities are endless. And with Pigi we’ve explored most of them.”&nbsp;A LIFE OF DESIGN WITH MARIO PEDOLYou are a passionate sailor, and in the early 80s you took a year out and sailed back and forth from the Caribbean. Tell us about that experience.That was a very important experience for me because my Oyster dealership, Oyster Marine Agency, suddenly wasn’t competitive because the value of the Pound spiked against the Italian Lira, pricing Oyster yachts out of the Italian market. So I decided to sail my Oyster to the Caribbean and to live aboard for a year. This turned out to be a fundamental experience for my future career as a yacht designer because there’s nothing more important than sailing and living aboard a 37’ yacht for understanding what is really fundamental.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35352/image/large-b8b62fa24f623664f8443f4a10e65ddd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35352">The sailing yacht market has been in decline for a while. Where do you see areas of improvement for the sailing industry?&nbsp;I’m happy to say that in the sailing market sector we work in - yachts from 10 to 40-metres - we’re still growing. We have been either producing more designs or have seen a larger total length of yachts produced every year. There has been a decline in the numbers of series yachts produced in the worst years from 2008-2012, but in our studio we haven’t seen a decline in the number of 20 to 40-metre custom and semi-custom projects that we sold. In fact, we have grown.&nbsp;I think that it’s fundamental to stay innovative and to never be happy with what’s already on the market, what already looks familiar. But you still have to keep in mind the right balance of aesthetics, function and performance… The crisis years weeded out and filtered a lot of what was on the market and also stimulated us to be more innovative and to think outside the box, something that’s important to us when we’re designing both sailing and motor yachts.&nbsp;What’s on your drawing boards right now, and what can we expect to see in the future?Our most recent sailing yacht projects are the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/6543" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind 9631.41m (103'1&quot;)">Southern Wind 96</a>’ (with two hulls launched in the past year and a third under construction), the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/7067" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind 10534.59m (113'6&quot;)">Southern Wind 105</a>’ (the first hull is launched, two more are under construction), the Mills-Nauta 75’ for Maxi Dolphin and the second hull in the Advanced 80 series.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/26070/image/large-5ce3a64c33324105e762a0b2622eccdd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26070">We’re also working on a new 100’ custom, with very aggressive and modern lines and we’re doing the interiors of a custom 100’ catamaran. We’re also doing the new interiors of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G239.0m (127'11&quot;)">G2</a> (ex <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G239.0m (127'11&quot;)">Cinderella IV</a>), redesigned by Nauta in occasion of the refit, and we’re working on a new 42-metre monohull for a famous European shipyard. You’ll see that in the fall at the boat shows!&nbsp;Still on the drawing board for prospect clients, we have a 130’ and a 145’, both blue water sailing yachts that are high performance and in composite construction, with Gran Turismo performance characteristics. Set to kick off on Saturday 26 December 2015, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will see an international fleet of 110 yachts from 28 nations gather at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney to embark on the iconic yacht race that covers over 628 nm to reach Hobart on the Tasman Island. Yachts preparing for 71st Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

The 30 metre Maxi Dolphin sailing yacht Nomad IV claimed line honours yesterday in the 2015 RORC Transatlantic Race when she crossed the finish line outside the Camper &amp; Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada. The monohul class winner averaged a boat speed of just under 12 knots over the 3,000nm race, having led the field from the start line in the Canary Islands 10 days ago.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157505/image/large-8e9137febd709ecd3b243eab5fd28c57.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157505">"We were so disappointed last year when our broken boom made us retire, but this year has been really special. We have had very few problems, so it's a different story. Victory for Nomad IV in RORC in Transatlantic Race

The second edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race got underway this weekend when the fleet headed west having started from Marina Lanzarote, off the west coast of Morocco. A solid breeze of 15 knots saw the sailing yachts off to a good start as they set their courses for the finish line at Camper &amp; Nicholsons’ Port Louis Marina in Grenada.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157372/image/large-7a864b04faaf60641ec3dd681d54c262.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157372">A range of yachts are taking part in the race, arranging from shorthanded 40 foot monohuls to ultra fast multihulls such as the lime green Phaedo3. Three powerful Maxis are taking part in the race, with Southern Wind’s 94 ft. Windfall taking part for the second time. Skippered by Olympic sailor Timothy Goodbody, Winfall managed to hold off Jean-Paul Riverie’s 100 ft. Nomad IV to the first mark at Puerto Calero Marina as they headed west. Following them, but holding on to an IRC rating-lead is the 78 ft. RORC Transatlantic Race gets underway

Dahm International has announced that they will display four yachts at the upcoming Palma Superyacht Show located in Palma Mallorca, including Mastiff, Tamara Rd, El Baile and Fantasea Blue.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153698/image/large-8762d6eb0e9c06835b3b963ab7848f2b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138146">The 28.70 metre Mastiff was built in 1967 by Appledore Shipbuilders, underwent an extensive refit in 2010 and is built entirely of welded steel. She hosts up to nine guests in a VIP suite on the upper deck – with access to the aft deck lounge and private elevator to the salon -, two twin-bedded cabins and a VIP cabin on the lower floor, all of which are en suite. She accommodates up to eight guests, and offers two cockpits: an aft cockpit with steering position and all control systems plus a spacious guest cockpit amidships, easily sheltered by a Bimini top. The great performance by the Wally Genie, early in October, proved both indisputable and spectacular in Group 2 of the highly exclusive Wally fleet during Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2012. The Prince Charles de Bourbon-Siciles’ yacht, one of the oldest of the Wally fleet given her launch in 1995, dominated proceedings after 8 races were run alongside the equally high-performance Dark Shadow, Ryokan and Sensei.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141437/image/large-57b4b1211852df6a9abcefed625716bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141437">With victory in three races and two second places, Genie displayed fantastic potential and revealed a crew with great complementarity and great cohesion, grouped around her owner-helmsman. This first major victory for the ocean-green Wally at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez is the fruit of a two-pronged plan of attack; that of sailing with the utmost professionalism and with a mindset coloured by the relaxed, enthusiastic spirit of Les Voiles. They pulled off this challenge to perfection thanks to the talents of the 18-strong crew in a performance driven by an amazing afterguard including the pure match race specialist Damien Iehl and Jules Verne Trophy holder, Sébastien Audigane; a hard core from… the Mini 6.50 Class!<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141438/image/large-c956370437e905bb8be2ee05196f9d8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141438">Charles de Bourbon-Siciles is a contented owner. To triumph in Saint Tropez is certainly a dream held by the several thousand racers, who flock to the magical race zone of Les Voiles each year. The large, futuristic Wallys are in a league of their own, racing against each other in their own ‘round’ set in front of Pampelonne. In this way they provide a unique, rare spectacle with their massive outlines and their remarkable aesthetics as they race with daggers drawn around the cans and between Cavalaire and Nioulargue during the coastal courses.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141439/image/large-3811764044d28004241ee88746102579.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141439">The setting for the 2012 edition of Les Voiles involved sunshine, a fine breeze and a very tame Mediterranean. The Wallys had an absolute field day as they competed in no less than 8 races from Monday through to Saturday. Genie kicked off the week with a 5th place.However, under the iron rule of Damien Iehl, in brilliant form in his role of tactician, right next to helmsman Charles de Bourbon-Siciles (the Wally class rules dictate that the owner must helm his or her own yacht), the large green yacht steadily upped its game a little everyday to round off the week with three resounding victories.“We were caught off guard during the first race,” admitted Charles de Bourbon-Siciles, after what proved to be a remarkable week in Saint Tropez. “However, the crew and Damien Iehl were excellent after that and all contributed to the result.” Match race specialist, Damien Iehl joined Genie just a year ago. “She’s a fabulous boat; one of the three most successful Wallys according to Luca Bassani himself, the inventor and architect of this truly specific class of modern super yachts. However finding the instructions for use isn’t easy,” Damien admits.It may have been Nicolas Marchand, an offshore racer with a Transat Jacques Vabre and Mediterranean Class 40 record to his credit, who provided the necessary ingredients to trigger success. Manager of the yacht in question, he too has made the formative journey from the Class Mini and a participation in the 2005 Mini Transat 6.50. “The idea was to gather together a crew, which is both highly professional, but also knows how to race in the best possible humour, so as Les Voiles de Saint Tropez remains an enjoyable experience. Forming an afterguard with Mini sailors seemed to me to be the best possible recipe.” In this way, Rémi Beauvais (Mini Transat 2003) and François Cuinet (Mini Transat 2009) ended up joining forces in the very intense post of trimming in the pit. “Genie only has two winches,” explains Damien Iehl, “and during the big tacking and gybing manoeuvres, the men in the pit play a decisive role in triggering a sequence of operations…”It was a post, which worked remarkably well throughout the week. “Damien Iehl, in charge of tactics, shone during the start phases and in the choices made regarding the position of the boat during the fiery face-offs against the fleet’s large craft” explains Nicolas Marchand. Indeed some of the Wallys exceed 30 metres in length. “Teaming up with Sébastien Audigane in the navigation, this after-deck duo really stood out” said Charles de Bourbon-Siciles and Nicolas Marchand in unison. “Part of this success was also down to another Mini sailor, bowman Clem Giraud, with Figaro sailor Yoann Richomme trimming, not to mention Rollo Parks of course, the boat’s British captain with a wealth of experience on large craft”.“It really was a group success,” concludes Charles de Bourbon. “Damien was in top form and the whole crew raised their game to fall in step. Victory for Genie in the Wally class at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

The Maxi Dolphin shipyard is currently working on a new 100-foot superyacht, the FC100. The yacht’s hull and waterline were designed by the French naval architects Finot-Conq, and the minimalist interior concept was designed by Pierre Frutschi, in close collaboration with the owner, and will feature matt white surfaces, in combination with polished black furniture, and indirect lighting, which will create a bright and spacious interior.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141253/image/large-0e45be305145d7de0cb1101c43d1b281.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141253">The yacht’s cabins are fitted with ultra-light, thin carpet to meet the owner’s need for comfort without compromising the boat’s sporty appearance and incredible lightness.
