Cana Gökhan and Fatih Sürekli, partners in life and co-founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a>, are aboard 28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a>, the first in the new steel-hulled series of pocket superyachts they designed for boutique builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>. The yacht made her debut at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2023">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and our conversation has turned to the perception of Turkish yacht designers and their status in the industry.&nbsp;“It can be a disadvantage in this business if you’re not from the UK, Italy or Holland,” says Cana. “Even when we propose something better, the top yards will usually pick Italians or British designers, which is one reason why we set up a London office and moved there. But what hurts most is that the big Turkish players are the same. They have their comfort zone and want to work with overseas designers because that is how they sell boats, so why try something new?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296392/image/large-9364cd32a6ef49c0f5ec76faa2df081d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296392">She has a point. There is no intrinsic reason why the British, Italians or Dutch should make better designers. You could argue that the large yacht industry in Europe is older and more established, but Turkey now ranks third in the world after Italy and the Netherlands. Moreover, when you consider that Noah’s Ark may well have been built by Turkish shipwrights you realise that boat building is something they’ve been doing successfully for a very long time.“Attitudes are starting to change,” says Fatih. “There is a new generation of managers looking to beat their own path. They’re young, tech-savvy and much more willing to invest in home-grown talent.”&nbsp;One name that pops up is Emre Sandan, a contemporary of Cana and Fatih who shares a similar background. Cana graduated in architecture from Yıldız Technical University and worked for the Ulutas outfitting company before moving to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> in Istanbul where she was lead interior designer for the now defunct <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> brand and its highly regarded motoryacht series. While at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> she met Fatih, a naval architect who studied at the same university, as did Emre Sandan, who also worked at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> and other Turkish shipyards before recently setting up his own engineering company, Mes Marine.“There was a nucleus of designers and naval architects who graduated from Yıldız Technical University and started working in yachting when the Turkish industry was taking off,” says Fatih. “We were reunited with Emre when he was shipyard manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp Yachts</a> and we were chosen to create the exterior and interior design of the XSR series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286676/image/large-721d8b3c89275bae9dd7325a93babc55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286676">The first in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp</a>’s XSR 85 series, aptly named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a>, debuted at last year’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and stole the show with its youthful design ethos and bright Porsche Guards Red hull. Designed and built with intelligence, originality and a big dollop of fun, in terms of layout, creativity and efficiency the 26-metre yacht was in many ways a precursor to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s new displacement series.&nbsp;Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a>, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a> 92DS <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a> sports chunky crossover styling, but pushes the design boundaries even further. The raised pilothouse is positioned well forward to maximise the interior volumes and aft deck space, the vertical bow adds visual impact and increases the waterline length, and the two-tone paintwork introduces a striking new aesthetic. Not only is it <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s first displacement model, it is also the first steel-hulled yacht to be equipped with triple <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS propulsion.“The edgy proportions and exterior lines of the DS series are inspired by the design DNA of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s fast runabouts,” says Fatih. “The idea was to create something new and different with huge windows, generous interior volumes and big exterior spaces. Having the IPS engines so far aft helped a lot in terms of layout and meant we could create a massive beach club in the stern.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241189/image/large-9019ae7b530840f6c0924bdaf2f238a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241189">Cana’s interior design is based on a summerhouse aesthetic: cool, calming and casual with oak veneers, light-coloured fabrics and occasional stand-out statements like the backlit feature wall in the main salon made of thinly cut sections of stone. The couple made a conscious effort to avoid using rare materials and are firm believers in the ‘less is more’ school of thought summed up in Coco Chanel’s famous advice about fashion accessories: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”“We don’t like palatial or extravagant interiors,” says Cana, a keen sailor who recently completed an RYA Competent Crew Course in Southampton. “It’s a question of taste, of course, but if we don’t feel it we don’t do it. Luxury is not about stuffing boats full of rare and expensive materials; it’s more about taking away. Simplicity is better than embellishment. Just being out at sea with friends and family is a luxury in itself. The experience is what’s important and we’re already talking with clients about reducing the quantity of interior materials on board.”&nbsp;As nominal head of design at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> (they avoid formal titles) Cana jokes she is the brains behind the operation, but it is clear they relish being able to work together on both the interior and exterior design of projects along with their 10-person strong team in London and Istanbul.&nbsp;“I don’t like when there is a mismatch between the interior and exterior styling,” says Fatih. “It can sometimes be a surprise, but usually the effect is jarring. Working on both means they develop in tandem and we avoid any discrepancies in style.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/113293/image/large-45201de725fcff303c860c9c8e1e4666.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113293">While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a> was the first to hit the headlines and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a> is sure to bring more media exposure, Red Yacht Design has been busy on other larger projects. Among others, they designed the interior of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>’s 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10690" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="B.A.L.M.Y.47.3m (155'2&quot;)Mengi Yay Yachts2022">B.A.L.M.Y.</a> launched last year; oversaw the interior and exterior refit of 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atina 46.7m (153'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2008">Atina</a>, also relaunched last year; created the interior concept for the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering</a> 125, as well as the exterior and interior design of the “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13126" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion One43.8m (143'8&quot;)Orion Yachts2024">Orion One</a>” 43-metre motoryacht for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7235" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion Yachts (Company)">Orion Yachts</a>. They have also started work on a new 50-metre and just signed for a 63-metre project, both in Turkey and still confidential. ICE Kite, a wonderfully sleek 64-metre motoryacht designed in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> for a German client that makes use of a supplementary kite propulsion system, also looks like it is back on track three years after it was first presented.As relative newcomers, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> is not encumbered with the pressure to play it safe, which makes all the difference. Younger owners generally prefer open-plan spaces, outdoor living, unique experiences, holistic design and understated luxury. Cana and Fatih have locked on to these styling cues to imbue their projects with a contemporary vigour that is compelling and exciting.&nbsp;"There are so many boats out there that look the same," says Cana. “We like doing things differently and we don’t want to feel like we’re just designing another boat. We’ve been lucky so far that the yards we’ve worked with have all been bold and brave and also want to make an impact. With the Cannes Yachting Festival quickly approaching, SYT takes a look at some of the new yachts that will be attending this year.

The first hull in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a> 92 DS series has been launched in Yalova, Turkey. When moored or at anchor, this platform can be extended thanks to fold-down bulwarks. Turkey-based yacht builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu Yachts</a> has unveiled the interior renderings for the first 28.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a> 92 DS series yacht. When moored or at anchor, this platform can be extended thanks to fold-down bulwarks. The 24.5-metre flagship yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts 82/0124.5m (80'5&quot;)Mazu Yachts2020">Mazu 82</a> has been delivered to her owner as the yard’s longest yacht to date. The 24.5m flagship yacht Mazu 82 has been delivered to her owner as the yard’s longest yacht to date.

Turkish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu Yachts</a> has launched its first 24.5-metre yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts 82/0124.5m (80'5&quot;)Mazu Yachts2020">Mazu 82</a> and in turn, revealed her custom interior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tanju Özelgin (Company)">Tanju Özelgin</a>. On schedule to be delivered to her owner soon, the new superyacht is the shipyard’s longest yacht to date and will be the brand’s flagship.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/115164/image/large-9a2f334dee5882bda830b2ffd0ae6663.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/115164"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts 82/0124.5m (80'5&quot;)Mazu Yachts2020">Mazu 82</a> was built from lightweight carbon composite to the exterior design and naval architecture of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu Yachts.</a> With a clean profile, expansive decks and large hull windows, the edgy exterior styling of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts 82/0124.5m (80'5&quot;)Mazu Yachts2020">Mazu 82</a> is also applied in the interior design. Guests can also enjoy the yacht’s state-of-the-art audio system and rich materials used throughout the interior, including the soft-leather-like wet surfaces and designer bathroom hardware. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/77891/image/large-b5cce9b24b9e6dbac85f2b0637b8db14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77891"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/77890/image/large-ba4e6640f428b72b53bca3f94c288a2b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77890">“The main challenge with yacht interiors is that the space mostly never stands still and is constantly surrounded by water," says the Turkish designer, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tanju Özelgin (Company)">Tanju Özelgin</a>. “This aspect will direct your decisions regarding which materials to use, the weight and scale of every piece of furniture, and whether or not the furniture is anchored to the decks or built-in,” he adds. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/77889/image/large-538f531d080faa28ffd81676bcaa2094.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77889">“The space has to be as compact and light as possible without losing the illusion of feeling at home or in a cosy hotel. The first hull of the new Mazu 82 from Turkish yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu Yachts</a> has been sold to a Turkish owner. The largest yacht model to be unveiled by the shipyard at 24.5-metres, she is expected to be delivered at the end of this summer. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/62397/image/large-79cd71ad1739e21d8b8b31fb899bd2a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/62397">With a layout incorporating the company's signature expansive open decks and three onboard staterooms, the Mazu 82 yacht will be built in a carbon composite sandwich construction. She will feature large hullside windows and her power will be provided by a triple Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/62399/image/large-0e642f716ebdfff5064c88e880df082e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/62399">Her exteriors are designed by the yard's founder, Halit Yukay and Mazu Yachts collaborated with Turkish designer Tanju Özelgin on her interiors. This is the first time that Mazu has outsourced its interior design, with the designer aiming to optimise the yacht's onboard spaces and to create an elegant and understated atmosphere on board.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/62396/image/large-972cd360fd42a53d2fe49da5c59ab5fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/62396">The full-beam master suite amidships takes advantage of Mazu's generous volume and large hullside windows, with an interior design combining subtle textures, muted colours and a generous amount of light to create a relaxing atmosphere of solitude for the owner.&nbsp;A private master head and walk-in closet opposite are also present.
