In a show of corporate strength and personal confidence, Massimo Perotti, Chairman and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SanLorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, has bought back the shares acquired by third-party stakeholders in recent years.&nbsp;Last July he repurchased the 16% stake held by Fondo Italiano d’Investimento, sold to the venture capital group in 2010 in the wake of the financial crisis. Then just before the Christmas break, he bought back the 23% stake acquired in 2013 by China-based Sundiro Holding when it partnered with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SanLorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> to develop the potential of the Chinese market for small boats.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/60009/image/large-336f0a4043e2b0ceec81d0afae33a151.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/60009">"At the time we needed to increase our working capital to support the sector in crisis, and there was also an agreement to help our partners build boats under 20 metres in China,”&nbsp;Perotti told the Italian daily La Stampa. “Now things have changed: boating in the region did not take off and Sundiro has a liquidity problem and needs cash, so they proposed that I buy back their shares.”Perotti happily agreed and now owns 96% of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SanLorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> through Holding Family Life, a holding company co-owned with his two children. There was the period of rapid expansion up until the financial crisis in 2008, when the yachting market collapsed. During the second phase, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SanLorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> managed to side-step the worst of the downturn by maintaining production and turnover and avoiding lay-offs. It is now entering the third phase with new investment and expansion plans. “We have recorded an increase in turnover from €300 million in 2017 to €380 in 2018, and we estimate a growth of around 20% to €460 million in 2019,” he says. “And most importantly, we have a portfolio of orders between now and 2020 worth €500 million.”&nbsp; <img src="/uploads/store/photo/41521/image/large-0208151e9622d097d709d376c1cc33f7.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41521">Perotti is also looking to develop new production lines with the Blue Game shipyard acquired last year and a series of open-coupé boats under the Sanlorenzo Sport label.He has also revealed that he will be working with friend and colleague Carla Demaria after the CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4387" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monte Carlo Yachts (Company)">Monte Carlo Yachts</a> broke with parent company Groupe Bénéteau last November. Her precise role is not yet clear, but there is talk of further acquisitions in the pipeline:“Carla is one of the best managers in the business and will be lending us a hand to grow further, but she will not be dealing directly with the Sanlorenzo brand.”

Sanlorenzo returns to 100% Italian ownership

Like many industries, the superyacht building industry reached its zenith just before the Global Financial Crisis hit in late 2008, with deliveries from the peak period stretching into 2009. 10 years on, the industry has mostly recovered from the hardship of the intervening years, although production in terms of numbers of yacht does not even come close to the record numbers seen around 2008. We compared the period 2007-2009 with the period 2015-2017, the last three years of which we have complete records. What becomes evident immediately is that production in terms of numbers of yachts over 30 metres long is down by 37% from 713 yachts during 2007-2009 to 443 yachts during 2015-2017. The market has also consolidated with the top ten players’ share of total deliveries going up from 32% to 44%.How has the top ten of superyacht builders been reshaped in the intervening years?<img src="/uploads/store/photo/34330/image/large-b24d99022ac6b92cfa16060955d71a1c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34330">Top Ten superyacht builders, 2007-2009 versus 2015-2017, in numbers of 30m+ yachts delivered<img src="/uploads/store/photo/54797/image/large-e9586b931d8a29f7659bb685a1f9ee8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/54797">Which yards gained?We can see that that the league table has changed significantly, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SanLorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> increasing its production almost threefold, while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> remained more or less stable in a smaller market. Meanwhile, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line Spa (Company)">Custom Line</a> posted increases of 20 to 30% in their production as well (although that is not the whole story with Feadship, as their production in terms of gross tons increased by over 50%!). <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/955" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gulf Craft (Company)">Gulf Craft</a> went up from 12 yachts during 2007-2009 to 18 yachts during 2015-2017, an increase of 50% putting the yard in fifth place. Taiwanese yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Alexander (Company)">Ocean Alexander</a> had delivered just one 30-metre plus yacht by 2009 but was up to 14 yachts during 2015-2017.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/34094/image/large-a2f98854eaf006035c6e65fd132582b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34094">However, the most impressive new entrants into the top ten are <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4387" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monte Carlo Yachts (Company)">Monte Carlo Yachts</a>. British builder Princess only delivered its first 30-metre plus newbuild in 2011, while Monte Carlo Yachts was only founded in December 2008 and did not deliver its first 30-metre plus newbuild until 2015. Steady performer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> is in tenth place, even though its production during 2015-2017 at ten yachts was lower than in 2007-2009 when it delivered 14 yachts.Which yards lost?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Overmarine Group SPA (Company)">Overmarine</a>, known for their Mangusta brand, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/362" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leopard Yachts (Company)">Leopard Yachts</a> were hit particularly hard by the economic crisis, with no deliveries from Leopard Yachts recorded lately, while Overmarine only delivered eight yachts during 2015-2017. Overmarine, however, bounced back over the years and now has a much more diversified portfolio of composite, steel and aluminium motor yachts.&nbsp;Production of yachts longer than 30 metres at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> dropped to only five yachts in 2015-2017. With the recent introduction of several new models around and over 30 metres, the company is becoming stronger again in the 30-metre plus market.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50161/image/large-ab165f1b0d338411ca142dba417cbe8e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50161">Fellow Italian yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> also dropped out of the top ten, delivering only five 30-metre plus yachts during 2015-2017, although these yachts are on average larger than what the yard previously delivered. The yard has also signed some bespoke projects in the past year. Finally, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> suffered from the decline in demand for US-built yachts. According to UCINA, the Italian Marine Trade Association, Carla Demaria has departed as chief executive of Monte Carlo Yachts following a dispute over management and strategic plans with parent company Groupe Beneteau. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/54551/image/large-c9135e35c03317b8a8b33917f5aff2b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/54551">Demaria, the current president of UCINA, has openly denounced Beneteau for “illegitimate behaviour” in relation to its Italian subsidiary MCY, accusing the French boatbuilding giant of abusing its majority control of the Italian brand and undermining its value.During a board meeting convened by Demaria on Saturday 10 November, she criticised Beneteau for actions that she believes go against the interests of MCY, its shareholders and employees, and the Italian marine industry in general.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/54497/image/large-a066262817efbc54c633658d2a9f7097.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/54497">Demaria is quoted as saying that “the defence of a premier Italian company is first and foremost.”&nbsp;Demaria had previously communicated her dissatisfaction over management decisions to Annette Roux, majority shareholder and member of Beneteau’s supervisory board, and Yves Lyon-Caen, chairman of the same board. The market presents huge potential and huge challenges at the same time and although it is steadily growing, the trajectory is not simply linear. We expect the market to keep on growing with some positive signals coming from Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia on yacht sales activity. We know that there are tendencies that come back, and possible slowdowns in a few markets, with new ones like Philippines and Vietnam, now booming. We could imagine that it would take not two to five years but an entire generation to have a solid base of potential and more mature customers for yachts and yachting culture. And we are here to address that, for many years to come.You note that the superyacht hotspot of Asia has gone from Malaysia to China and Hong Kong. How is the infrastructure in China and Hong Kong for superyachts?Hong Kong is currently the most mature port of call for superyachts in Asia and counts its largest number. The infrastructures are good but marinas are full and we are challenged by lack of berths. The superyacht market in Asia was particularly active in the 1990s when the local economies were booming and is now on the rise again. Just recently the company sold four Sanlorenzo superyachts ranging 80-150 ft, with more superyacht sales to be finalised in 2017. Asia insights from the experts at Simpson Marine

The 25th edition of the Dubai International Boat Show will kick off tomorrow. This year’s show, that runs until 4th March, has attracted once again a global fleet of superyachts cruising the region. Feadship’s 70-metre Joy will be making an appearance along with the 77-metre Silver Fast. The largest yacht on offer by local yacht builder Gulf Craft, the Majesty 155, is another yacht that visitors can look forward to seeing. Monte Carlo Yachts will be displaying their highly custom and illuminated MCY 86 yacht for the first time this week. Take a look at these and other yachts that will be on display this year, here:
