As top speed wasn’t a concern, we focused on a long, sleek form that also supports the yacht’s elegant styling.”What began as a 36-metre concept has evolved into a 47.8-metre design to accommodate the owner’s vision for additional amenities and enhanced onboard comfort.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/376156/image/large-1a917aa128d5edf39dee2facf457140f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/376156">“As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/234" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Guido de Groot Design (Company)">Guido de Groot</a> began shaping the general arrangement, it quickly became clear that we couldn’t quite fit everything in,” explained <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2948" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van der Valk Shipyard (Company)">Van der Valk</a> Technical Director Bram Kooltjes. “We extended to 38-metres, then 40, and from there the design gradually grew – first to 42-metres, and finally to its ultimate length of 47.8-metres.”&nbsp;With sports cars being one of the owner’s passions, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/16353" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project ZEN47.83m (156'11&quot;)Van der Valk Shipyard2028">Project Zen’s</a> exterior design draws inspiration from automotive styling and features a full metallic paint finish. She will have a volume of 499 GT, reflecting an active, family-focused lifestyle with generous deck spaces throughout.The owner and his design team have overseen every stage of development, maintaining meticulous attention to detail throughout. “He loves to swim and enjoys viewing his yacht from the water while swimming around it,” said De Groot. “With that in mind, the owner specifically asked us to show renderings of how the yacht would appear from that perspective, which was a first for us!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/376158/image/large-f3369810ac1d34d409cda409543c9639.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/376158">Although <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/16353" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project ZEN47.83m (156'11&quot;)Van der Valk Shipyard2028">Project Zen’</a>s interior design has yet to take shape, De Groot explained that it will be centred around the owner’s lifestyle and his desire to welcome family and friends aboard. The interior is envisioned to reflect a homey atmosphere, combining casual chic design with practical functionality.“Despite the yacht measuring 48-metres, the owner intends to remain hands-on, continuing to treat her with the same personal involvement and intimacy as if she were a much smaller vessel,” De Groot added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/376153/image/large-9d8fb19d75d02b95c177ad81eb448c9d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/376153">A strong connection to the sea and a generous sense of openness were top priorities for the owner. The yacht features expansive windows and ample room to move freely throughout the main deck. De Groot noted that the wide, gently sloping staircases make moving between decks feel “more like a gentle stroll than a climb.”The main saloon flows into a country kitchen that includes a dining area and a show galley, where guests can watch the chef prepare meals right before them. A professional galley is located forward to port, as dining is considered an integral part of the owner’s family-oriented lifestyle.“Dining together is more important to the family than lounging,” noted De Groot. “They’re unlikely to spend much time in the salon and will regularly gather to enjoy meals in the show galley; it’s the heart of the space.”The main deck houses the full-beam owner’s suite, as well as a full-beam wellness area featuring a gym to port and a yoga room to starboard, both fitted with large sliding glass doors. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2948" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van der Valk Shipyard (Company)">Van der Valk</a> Project Manager Arno de Wit highlights this as one of the yacht’s standout features, noting its excellent cross-ventilation and seamless indoor–outdoor connection.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/376155/image/large-19cfbcabe263206db936c832d290cac2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/376155">“The wellness area is designed with flexibility in mind: it can serve as a private retreat for the owner when combined with the master suite, or remain open for family and guest use by closing off that suite,“ said Arno. “In fact, the inclusion of the gym and yoga room is one of the key reasons the yacht grew in length.”The aft deck opens onto a three-sided sea terrace with fold-down bulwarks and retractable swim stairs for easy water access. Forward, sliding doors lead to a sports garage stocked with eFoils, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3030" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cayago AG / Seabob (Company)">Seabobs</a>, and wakeboards.Moving up top, the expansive split-level sundeck has been conceived for both relaxation and socialising. The aft section offers ample space for sunbathing and gathering, while beneath the forward hardtop lies an inviting open-air lounge, essentially an outdoor saloon, complete with a wet bar, grill, comfortable seating, and alfresco dining area. The side-deck access offers a direct path to the foredeck and ground tackle.On the bow lounge, guests can take in the views and feel the breeze whether at anchor or underway. They can also enjoy a sunset soak in the spa pool, while the bow deck houses a dedicated garage for the MOB tender. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYacht Times (Company)">SuperYacht Times</a> founder and board member of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6042" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Superyacht Life Foundation (Company)">Superyacht Life Foundation</a>, Merijn de Waard, attended the 15th annual gathering for the yachting industry, the La Belle Classe Superyachts Business Symposium, organised by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Club de Monaco (Company)">Yacht Club de Monaco</a>. The event was pivoted around a dinner debate and which allowed industry experts to take stock of the current situation, issues, and challenges for the yachting sector. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260004/image/large-7460a1c489b484e957f1a35cc1fb6418.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260004">This year the theme was focused on the positive projection of the yachting industry, where the intention was to seek a positive outlook on the industry during testing times when carbon emissions are being calculated. The goal was to understand, with expert insight, the ways in which leveraging eco-performance alternatives can progress an energy transition. Alongside these experts, Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting took the approach to centralise key players of the supply chain in the industry and include owners and captains of superyachts within the event.Bernard d’Alessandri, YCM General Secretary and President of the Cluster Yachting Monaco, explained how “The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Club de Monaco (Company)">Yacht Club de Monaco’s</a> unique and neutral position enables it to bring those involved across the industry together to analyse the situation and propose concrete solutions. You all coming here this evening reflects everyone’s involvement which is essential if we are going to shift the goalposts”. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/63648/image/large-ae12fed61d617bf6256c8890db67a3e6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/63648">With an insightful grasp and gauge of the public opinion and perception of the yachting industry Merijn de Waard, Founder and Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYacht Times (Company)">SuperYacht Times</a> outlined how, “the number of yachts under construction grew by 7% in 2023, and right now there are 648 yachts over 30m under construction. The shipyards have full order books, and some shipyards have already sold yachts for delivery in 2028”.Diving deeper, Merijn de Waard further explained how “new yacht sales dropped 29% in 2022 compared to 2021. However, 2022 was still the second-best year (after 2021) of the last ten years, with 221 new yacht sales. We should add that 2021 was very unusual, as there was a strong demand from buyers after the Covid-19 pandemic and, at the same time, a lot of availability of new yachts. As an example, in 2021, 35% of new yachts under construction were for sale, while today it is only 19%”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/48747/image/large-e16fb6ec9acc706d0064f20af1fa2cb5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/48747">A question asked at the La Belle Classe Superyachts Business Symposium was how rising inflation and increased energy costs have altered the yacht market overall.Michael Breman, Sales Director at<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">&nbsp;Lürssen Yachts</a>, “The more expensive things get, the more cautious consumers become. What we are noticing today is that many are waiting. They are interested but slow the pace when it comes to making decisions as the market is uncertain in this global context”. A trend confirmed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Oeino</a>, designer and naval architect whose firm has also seen a fall in activity compared to last year, he added “I think we are going to have to deal with a drop in enthusiasm for superyachts over the next few months, even years”.With the world in crisis over consistently unstable economic conditions and increasing prices for energy, materials, and higher interest rates, it is no wonder that the perception of yachting is slightly biassed, with 71% of 1,200 yacht specialist publications published in 2022 reporting negative feelings towards the industry sector.&nbsp;This notion is explained by Captain Nigel Marrison, Founder of Blue ESG, when he said, “we talk about the reputation of superyachts today. We are talking about a licence to operate. To maintain it, we need an action plan to achieve specific environmental, social, and governance objectives. The idea is to support the industry as it improves performance and reduces its environmental impact. What can we do with them, given that the cost to convert them to another mode of propulsion, with methanol or hydrogen, is prohibitive. In the shipping industry, the lifespan of a conventional yacht is about 20 years which is not the case for superyachts. They can go up to 25, even 50 years. The problem with all this is that it increases the size of our fleet and therefore the emissions,”This stance was further examined by Nigel Marrison when he prompted others to “ask yourself if your yacht will make the world a better place? And together, let’s make 2023 the year of transition for the superyacht industry”.&nbsp;Even though most boats may still be powered by diesel today, the future for superyachts is promising. There is a range of solutions that are envisaged to achieve a carbon-free future.&nbsp;“We anticipate a future of hybrid propulsion methods in line with environmental issues,” commented Dr Daniel Chatterjee, Director Sustainability Technology Strategy &amp; Regulatory Affairs, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2207" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rolls-Royce Marine (Company)">Rolls-Royce</a>. &nbsp;“Sustainability Technology Strategy &amp; Regulatory Affairs, Rolls-Royce. “Are the concepts of sustainability and superyachts contradictory? Perhaps, but there is a dynamic and a technology that makes them the precursors of more eco-aware shipping”. Yachts emit 5 million tonnes of CO2 which represents 0.3% of the maritime sector’s emissions. “It’s not much but it’s already something”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256092/image/large-d998faebe0e92b5fefc05be5ee09ca5c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256092">By 2030 expect methanol/electricity associations, while CO2 neutral fuels like methanol could be a solution for the shipping sector. “Yachts must drive green innovation by developing truly sustainable footprints by optimising energy use and efficiency, researching sustainable fuel options, and adopting new technologies. &nbsp;Methanol has the potential to become a major fuel source for the maritime industry with forecasts predicting that by 2050, 40% of its fuel will be methanol,” added Daniel Chatterjee.Methanol is also of interest for the superyacht sector due to ease of transportation and its current availability. “It’s essential yachting become proactive,” noted Roberto Giorgi, Honorary Chairman of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser Yachts</a>. “We have the same objectives, and I hope Monaco becomes the leader in the luxury yacht field. The advantage of wind propulsion is that wind is clean, free, and universal. Its usage is more than promising for reducing the environmental impact of ships as a solution that “transforms wind energy into a driving force”. Used for millennia to power ships, the wind is proving effective in addition to engine power, “for example, this solution was chosen for the Energy Observer laboratory boat, which covered over 40,000 nautical miles. Wind power represented 75% of propulsion”.“However, we mustn’t forget that if we are to give yachting a positive image, we must demonstrate that it is not too daunting,” said Captain Sean Meagher (M/Y Latitude) and Captains’ Club member. “We have the potential to change the face of the industry, to show we are not all about excess and frivolity but an industry of innovation, altruism, and passion. To do that, we need to tell the stories of vessels and their owners that do make the world a better place. Lürssen has completed the refit on 68.15 metre superyacht Global, formerly known as Kismet and launched in 2007. She left the shipyard at the end of June and is currently in the Mediterranean.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149393/image/large-edccb1fa28d9ce0c6d7cbdc8822d9fd8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/149393">The refit included the repaint of the hull in a light grey colour. Tim Morley of Morley Yachts describes the project as, “a great credit to Lürssen’s refit team and the contractors who undertook the work.”Further changes included enhancements to her helicopter deck, which is now significantly larger and safer for regular helicopter operations. Following last week's news about the sale by Moran Yacht &amp; Ship of the 68 metre Kismet, we have now learned that the buyer was represented by Tim Morley of Morley Yachts. In this article the Managing Director of Morley Yachts, Tim Morley updates us on the current situation for yachts in Tunisia, as well as the development of Marina Bizerte. By Tim MorleyWe acknowledge that there have been some issues with security in Tunisia since the start of the recent revolution and changing political landscape. This has clearly raised some concerns amongst people who had been looking at investing in Tunisia’s marina developments, or even just coming to visit with their yacht at some point in the future. We are pleased to report that momentum continues towards ‘a significant role for the Yachting Industry in Tunisia’s future’, and furthermore we can surmise: ‘an important role for Tunisia in the global Yachting Industry over the next ten years’. This includes the construction of the impressive new marina in Bizerte, which is back on track following the recent disturbances. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133921/image/large-df0024b57f005edb31c5aadadacb9652.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/128906">The new government will be fully aware of the potential of the Yachting Industry for employment and economic growth.
