Last week, the Italian design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> hosted another successful edition of their annual Rendez-Vous event. Taking place last Friday, the event was hosted in the exclusive Larusmiani boutique in the heart of Milan, with those in attendance including clients, owners, shipyard representatives and journalists.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/106960/image/large-f99aa467f1c7d8b579493ed3c4d8c0ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/106960"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/106967/image/large-74ed2f0cff49706a2ed3de1e6a975707.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/106967">The theme of the event this year was 'The Italian Gentleman', with the proceedings focusing largely on Hot Lab's most recent projects with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arcadia Yachts (Company)">Arcadia Yachts</a>,<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. Fourth annual Hot Lab Rendez-vous a success 

The third edition of the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous - 2019">Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous&nbsp;</a>welcomed more than 22,000 visitors this year. Taking place in Viareggio between 9-12th May, the international trade fair aimed at the high-end nautical sector showcased shipbuilding and accessories from exhibitors all around the world. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/80390/image/large-c477552078cc3c0ca38a4f6fa077ce47.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80390">In terms of the demographics attending the show, there was a strong European presence, particularly from France (8.5%), Germany (6.3%) and Spain (5.3%). Visitor numbers were also high from the United States (10%) and Russia (7%), with extra-EU visitors making up 37% of foreign visitors to the show.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/80389/image/large-e824d9e46fcf894cc8477ce2b7a14138.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80389">Originally created to highlight the potential of Italian excellence in the nautical industry, numerous brands which have a strong presence in Tuscany and Versilia were in attendance.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/80384/image/large-b7c5548445711943d323591b860a5513.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80384">With the show taking place over four days, 150 exhibitors brought with them 90 boats which had an average length of 32.30 metres. Numerous vessels made their debut appearances during the show including the Azimut Benetti Group's Atlantis 45 and the Solaris Power 55 from<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5305" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Solaris Yachts (Company)">&nbsp;Solaris:</a> a model designed by Brunello Acampora. Third annual Hot Lab Rendez-vous a success

The second edition of the Versilia Yachting Rendezvous is set to be bigger and better than ever. Taking place across the Darsena Italia, Darsena Europa and the Marina in Viareggio, Italy between 10th-13th May, this international trade fair for the high-end nautical sector will showcase shipbuilding and accessories from around the world and will feature a new exhibition area, brand new events and more, with more than 170 companies participating this year.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/27519/image/large-eddc532c214d1c47d0c3b02e29567590.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/27519">The event was announced earlier this week at a press conference in Milan in the studios of Radio Monte Carlo, the radio partner of the event. The rendezvous, driven by Nautica Italiana, is organised by Fiera Milano in collaboration with the Distretto Tecnologico per la Nautica e la Portualità Toscana, with the support of the Tuscan Regional Authorities and the Municipality of Viareggio, with the intention of involving the entire industry, as well as national and international associations in the sector. This exhibition was created in order to highlight the potential of Italian excellence in the nautical industry - the value of production of which, in 2017, exceeded two billion Euro, according to Deloitte. Tuscany and Versilia have been chosen due to their long tradition of nautical design, technology and high-quality craftsmanship in a territory renowned around the world over for beauty, art, hospitality, and an Italian lifestyle. “We are approaching the second edition of the VYR with the awareness that we have accepted and met the requests of a leading sector under the Made in Italy label, where there was great demand for an event that could represent the luxury range. An event that was synonymous with typically Italian excellence and quality”, said Paolo Borgio, the exhibition manager of the Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous (pictured below). He continued, “The objective is to continue to grow, and we have all the elements we need to reach it. We have recorded an increase in the request for spaces by exhibitors coming from all over the world. That is why we needed to extend the exhibition offer, also occupying the docks of the Marina, which will ensure a larger number of vessels in the water.”&nbsp; “After the miracle of the first edition of the VYR where, together with Fiera Milano, we organised a new trade fair with international appeal in just over a month, we are very satisfied with how the second edition is developing”, said Lamberto Tacoli, the president of Nautica Italiana (also pictured below).&nbsp;“This enthusiasm was shared both by our partners and by all the exhibitors - a symptom of a lively and recovering market, with numbers clearly confirming it. Second edition of Versilia Yachting Rendezvous set to be a success 

The first edition of the Versilia Yachting Rendez-Vous hosted from 11th to 14th May saw more than 18,000 visitors attend the event in Viareggio, event organisers have announced. A total of 72 Italian-built yachts were on show with 117 exhibiting companies.

“To have created an event of this level in such a short amount of time fills us with pride and satisfaction,” commented Paolo Borgio, exhibition manager of the Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous. “For a long time, the Italian nautical sector had been waiting for an event that could show off one of the sectors that best represents the Made in Italy label around the world, and we have finally done it. “For Nautica Italiana, the success of the Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous means three important things,” continued Lamberto Tacoli, president of Nautica Italiana, “the format that we offered proved to be the winning one: to create a new, outdoor, springtime event dedicated to high-end boats and the luxury nautical production chain. Involving brands and glamour Made in Italy in transversal manner proved to be a winning concept. And, finally, the third winning choice was to entrust organisation of the event to a professional third party. We are aware that the challenge for the next edition is a tough one: in fact, everything that was outlined this year must be developed for the coming edition.”

The Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous, significantly driven by Nautica Italiana, was organised by Fiera Milano, in collaboration with the Distretto Tecnologico per la Nautica e la Portualità Toscana, with the support of the Tuscan Regional Authorities and the Municipality of Viareggio, with the intention of involving the entire industry, as well as national and international associations in the sector. A great role, in terms of hospitality, was played by the territory of Versilia, with its municipalities of Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, which were the stage and setting for the events that animated the days of the show.

Success for the first edition of the Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous

Stepping into the shoes of the CEO of one of the most famous Italian shipyards in the world is a task that not many could confidently undertake, though following his acquisition of Sanlorenzo over a decade ago, Massimo Perotti has done exactly that. Under his leadership, the company has not only been successfully guided through the turbulent times of the Financial Crisis, but has gone through a period of rapid - and quite phenomenal - growth that certainly doesn’t seem to be grinding to a halt anytime soon.

Entering the yachting industry in the early 80s, Perotti was still a student when he met Mr. Vitelli, President of Azimut-Benetti. Immediately hitting it off, Vitelli was so impressed with Perotti that he took him on as his assistant whilst still in the process of finishing his last exams at university. Speaking with Perotti, it’s not hard to see why Vitelli would have grounds to be impressed - even at the beginning of his successful career. He’s a man with a true passion for the industry, working tirelessly around the clock with his head always in the game. In his own words, “I have been putting my heart and soul into this industry since day one.”

It wasn’t until May 2004, when Perotti was 44 years old, that he took this passion elsewhere, eager to be the Chief in Command of his own operation. And that’s where Sanlorenzo comes in. He describes this journey: “I had a lot of experience in one of the top managerial positions of one of the largest shipbuilding groups in the world, but I desired to become the entrepreneur myself. At the time, Sanlorenzo was listed for sale. Mr. Jannetti had no children to pass the company on to, and so asked me to work beside him for a year to be sure I deserved to take his baby. Most importantly, he needed to be reassured that I would develop the company following his philosophy, a philosophy that included no large scale production, made to measure products, and personal relationships with each customer always with quality and service at the top of his goals.”

Despite rumours of disagreements in the aforementioned Sanlorenzo philosophy between Jannetti and Perotti, Perotti insists that this is untrue, and though Sanlorenzo has indeed seen constant growth since he took over the company, an aggressive expansion plan was never the intention. Since the beginning he has respected the wishes of the company’s founder, as he tells us, “Today we still build 30 yachts per year, which are now, of course, larger because of the market demand. I always try to remember Janetti’s way of doing business, and that’s a key-point in the heart of Sanlorenzo's branding. I learnt from Jannetti the philosophy “tradition and innovation” and I improved the product by technical innovation and design, always without forgetting the tradition of the brand throughout the years.”

It’s clear that Perotti truly lives and breathes Sanlorenzo - an admirable quality that is perhaps reflective of the leaps and bounds the brand has taken over the years. This actually isn’t just a turn of phrase in the case of Perotti who, for the first eight years of leadership at Sanlorenzo, lived aboard a Sanlorenzo vessel near the shipyard facilities. Describing his dedication to learning his product inside out, he says, “I liked the idea of learning everything I could - both good and the bad - of my product. It is essential for the Chairman as well as technical people of a yachting company to know the characteristics of the yachts built by the shipyard and to understand how to improve it.”

“At the weekend I used to go back to Torino where I have my main residency,” he continues. “I owned a SD 92 named Coco a few years ago; now I move from one yacht to another depending on the tests/prototype needs. I keep boating to three months per year in the summer.”

We managed to catch Perotti amidst his summer yachting excursions recently, who gave us a frank insight into the world of Sanlorenzo.

Following a tough period you attracted new investors in the company in 2013, Sundiro. Part of the agreement is to build 10 to 20 metre boats. Is that still the case?

In 2013 we carried out a capital increase in order to support the company through the heavy crisis. The new partner today owns 22% of Sanlorenzo, which is an important minority stake in the company. With this partner we planned to build yachts below 20 metres in China together but from 2014 onwards the market has shifted and we have decided - in total agreement - to stop this project and await future developments of the market in the Far East.

You also have a lease of the San Marco shipyard in La Spezia. Is the market for 50+ metre yachts becoming more important for Sanlorenzo?

Cantieri San Marco has been the right investment at the right time. Our strategy is to split the company into two strong divisions, comprised of the Yacht Division contributing two thirds of the business, and the Superyacht Division, representing a third of the business.

The San Marco shipyard has the capability to build yachts above 100 metres, but we have no intention to enter the megayacht market. Sanlorenzo’s philosophy is to grow slowly, taking care of our customers. We have built eight units of 46 metres in steel (the 46Steel) in the last six years, four of whose owners are now asking the shipyard to build yachts exceeding 60 metres. As a result, we are now producing 58, 62, 64, and 66 metre yachts for these customers respectively, all to be delivered in 2019 and 2020.

You also have plans to rebuild the Ameglia shipyard. Is that ground-breaking plan going ahead?

Yes, we are going to double the size of Ameglia shipyard within 2018 and extend production capacity in both Divisions: in the Superyacht Division acquiring CSM shipyard in La Spezia in 2016, and in the Yacht Division, expanding its facilities with the new shipyard in Ameglia within 2018.

In 2014 you were appointed Chairman of UCINA, resigning just a year later stating that the Association lacked the proactive attitude and positive thinking required to put your initiatives into practice. How is your relationship with UCINA today?

My relationship with UCINA has always been very good. Today I am a Past President that is still very active inside UCINA. I strongly believe there was no need to start a new association (Nautica Italiana). I think it is more appropriate to openly discuss matters inside UCINA, improving the Italian nautical association as much as we can. I personally think it is an international embarrassment for the Italian Industry to split the nautical association into two.

My resignation from the role of President happened in order to avoid the risk of certain shipyards leaving UCINA, but my sacrifice was not enough. It seems that my Italian colleagues, the big companies with big business worldwide, find it hard to accept the democratic rules of an association which has to act in favour of all players.

Considering the massive growth of the company over the past decade, where do you envision Sanlorenzo in another decade?

My vision for Sanlorenzo for the next decades is further growth of 20 to 30% taking us to a turnover of €300 - 350 million; continuous improvement of the product with technology and design innovation to satisfy the new demand of the market; continuously improve our level of service; to come closer to the top quality Dutch and German top shipyards. We believe the top side of the market cares a lot about quality and service regardless of price, and that is precisely the side of the market we’d like to be.

The Italian Altagamma Council announced seven new Ambassadors of the Italian Excellence recently, amongst which was designer Mario Pedol of Nauta Yachts. Nautica Italiana announces 10 new members

Riva’s new superyacht division will focus on two separate lines; one being aimed at a more classic and traditional design approach. The other, a sportier line aimed at a more performance orientated market, drawing inspiration from the brand’s coupe range of yachts such as the very successful Domino 88 model. New 50m Riva Superyacht Division unveiled

A new association, Nautica Italiana was established today in Milan, whereby 25 brands will be represented by the new association, focused on the development of the nautical industry in the country, and its influences abroad.Amongst the new group’s initial strategies, will be the reaffirming of the industry’s credibility, an increased presence at the industry’s leading events, and the development of a system to monitor the nautical industry’s performance. The association will be lead by Board members, appointed by the associations founding members, Lamberto Tacoli (Chairman), Luigi Alberto Amico, Cataldo Aprea, Fabio Boschi, and Giovanna Vitelli (Vice Chairpersons); Corrado Salvemini (Director); and Lorenzo Pollicardo (General Secretary).As part of the association’s vision to pair it’s efforts with like-minded companies, Nautica Italiana has become affiliated with with Altagamma, bringing their experience in the fashion, design, food, hotel, jewelery and automotive industries to the table.Andrea Illy, Chairman of Fondazione Altagamma, stated: “Eleven of the brands represented by Nautica Italiana have chosen to become members of Fondazione Altagamma, and this is an honor for us, because the Italian nautical industry can boast unique expertise and achievements at the global level."By Charl van Rooy
