One of the yachting industry’s favourite shows, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/129" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma International Boat Show - 2022">Palma International Boat Show</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6679" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Village (Company)">Palma Superyacht Village</a> returns for 2022. The event previously known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4309" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Show (Company)">Palma Superyacht Show</a>, will take place from 28th April to 1st May 2022 in the heart of Palma de Mallorca at Moll Vell Marina. The familiar and popular show offers an excellent display of superyachts above 24 metres that are available on the international brokerage and charter market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/222707/image/large-a6bb6814f9d5cf95e711cd923b1c410f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/222707">When it comes to chartering, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6679" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Village (Company)">Palma Superyacht Village</a> is one of very few shows that welcome clients to inspect the yachts, instead of allowing access only to brokers. In addition, a wide variety of local and international refit and service companies will be at their booths, ready to do business and network with both old and new customers.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/222712/image/large-8bcc04b8a0b8fafd1fedae889e03de1f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/222712">&nbsp;The exhibitor bookings show a strong recovery from the pandemic-induced slowdown last year. &nbsp;From early March, the dock-side exhibition was just about fully booked, and much like the previous events, there is an important element of loyalty with a high percentage of returning exhibitors. Although the space is limited at the downtown harbour, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6679" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Village (Company)">Palma Superyacht Village</a> has always searched for ways to respond to the needs of the different segments of the industry. In 2017, the event saw the introduction of a Refit &amp; Repair Area which has since grown in popularity and is currently the first area to get booked up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/222891/image/large-4403feb048bdc658d77e078bda544423.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/222891">This year sees the launch of yet another new concept, a crew area with a strong emphasis on professional training, crewing as a career and of course relaxed networking between professionals. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6679" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma Superyacht Village (Company)">Palma Superyacht Village</a> has teamed up with Acrew, a well-known Palma based professional network of over 15,000 captains and crew, to set up a training and networking hub on the Esplanade. Brokerage yachts are normally booked very late for the simple reason that the availability status can change at a moment's notice, but this year the situation is different – never before have the yacht bookings been so active so early on. As the International Boat Show Palma draws to a close today, SuperYacht Times’ Merijn de Waard interviews Arne Ploch of Camper &amp; Nicholsons International and one of the organisers of the Palma Superyacht Show. Arne talks about the how the show has changed in recent years, as well as reflects upon the possibilities for future development following the early sold out status of the event.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153933/image/large-a6cd94c313de3044d235a8a41dd441a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153914">SYT: What has changed in Palma this year in comparison to last year?Arne: We continued with the same concept and we increased the number of berths - last year we had 54 yachts, this year we have 62. We also have a little bit more life this year with the inclusion of Marc Fosh organising the restaurant in our area - he just got a Michelin star. Otherwise we have continued with the same concept; a Show made by the industry for the industry.SYT: I have been here now for two days, and I get the feeling that there are quite a few clients and people who are seriously looking at sailing yachts, as in every size range you pretty much have a few different options.Arne: Absolutely. It is the sailing yacht show, and I can’t think of any other show where you can find this amount of large sailing yachts. In this size range between 80 to 120 foot, you have a selection which is incredible. You can show a client eight yachts which would fit into what he is looking for, and that is amazing. We are a bit short this year on motor yachts, with more sailing yachts than motor yachts, but our aim is to have it 50/50.SYT: So the aim is not to get as many sailing yachts as possible here?Arne: Palma will always be a sailing yacht base and we will always attract more sailing yachts, but the show as such would like to have 50/50 motor and sailing.SYT: The show is pretty full at the moment. Is there room for expansion?Arne: We’re working on it. It’s very difficult and complex as all the show area belongs to different concessions, with STP shipyard on one side, there is the new Port Vell Marina, two differently managed charter quays and the fishing boat area, all joined together for this event. There is room, but we move slowly, maybe a few more berth for next year and so on. It sold out really early this year - by January we were already fully booked. Then we started with the waiting list, you get cancellations, yachts do not make it on time from the Caribbean, but yes, it’s fully sold out.SYT: In terms of the size of the boats, are you looking at trying to get bigger yachts here?Arne: I think we attract boats that are based in Palma, and Palma is not a base for 60+ metre yachts. Our market here is 80 foot up to 50 metres. We wouldn’t mind if we had some more larger yachts as well, and once we reorganise the area further inside the show, we will get bigger yachts inside the STP area in the 40 metre plus range, and the smaller yachts further in.SYT: In terms of clients and buyers visiting the Show, is there a large German population as well?Arne: It’s quite interesting, because in the first years of the Show we got a lot of local people which were predominantly the Germans, the English and the Scandinavians who have houses on the island. Now people are coming from quite far away; some South Americans are flying in, Russians - we have all sorts of people that are specifically coming for the Show. Yesterday I saw a Saudi client. He was in Europe, saw there was a boat show and he came over to Palma. So I think we have been getting the message out there, and are getting now clients from further away. Palma Superyacht Show attracts global buyers

SuperYacht Times Merijn de Waard visited the 32nd edition of the International Boat Show Palma, and the third edition of the Palma Superyacht Show. Here, Merijn speaks to Simon Goldsworthy, one of Camper &amp; Nicholsons International's senior sales brokers about the benefits of the Palma Show specifically to the sales of sailing yachts, as well as talks about the 38 metre Oyster sailing yacht Twilight which the brokerage firm currently have on display here in Palma.<p a="" href="http://www.superyachttimes.com/articles/Image/Editorial/Yacht%20Shows/2015-02-Palma-Yacht-Show/Palma-SY-Show-big.jpg" rel="lightbox[exterior]" style="text-align: center;" title="Yachts in Palma, Spain"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153878/image/large-7d92ab525e7dc499e821fbff15a68c17.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152690">SYT: There are a lot of sailing yachts here in Palma. Do you think it’s good to have a show in which there are more sailing than motor yachts?Goldsworthy: Absolutely. In many of the larger shows there’s very often a lack of sailing yachts - take Monaco as an example. When buyers come to Monaco looking for a sailing yacht, there are never more than three or four that you can show them, whereas here, there’s around 9 or 10 in each size category. That provides more choice, which hopefully leads to more sales. I think the other really useful thing that Palma gives us is a show at the right point in the season, in that you can come here, see a boat, and if you move reasonably quickly, you can be sailing around all summer. With the autumn shows there’s never that sense of urgency. A potential buyer can come to the show, look around and then think about it for a while. They know they have all winter. Then of course they lose their momentum, and their purchase perhaps gets put off for another year.SYT: Do you think it helps that there is a very big German population here? They seem to be very active in the sailing yacht market.Goldsworthy: I haven’t thought about it, but you’re probably right. There are a lot of German sailing boat owners - more than you would expect. I think the Spanish are very keen sailors as well.SYT: As a broker, do you think it requires a different strategy to promote a sailing yacht over a motor yacht?Goldsworthy: It’s a lot smaller world in sailing yachts. There are only really 10 or 12 sailing yacht brokers as individuals that are very active in the sailing yacht market. It’s quite a small community of brokers, so you have to be quite targeted with your marketing rather than diffuse as with motor yachts.SYT: We have seen a lot of regattas over the years. Do you think this helps to generate interest in sailing yachts?Goldsworthy: The whole regatta scene is a really fun thing. I have a couple of owners that do them and they really enjoy them. It’s a great opportunity for them to meet other like minded owners and talk about yachts, and a great opportunity to have a party! Events like this and the St Barths Bucket are almost a must for most sailboat brokers nowadays.SYT: What do you have on display here in Palma?Goldsworthy: I have the 38 metre Oyster Twilight which was built two years ago for the former owner of Oyster Yachts. He sold the company and then treated himself to this as a retirement gift to himself. He’s had a great time with it and now he’s ready to move on. As you would expect because of his experience, he’s a very knowledgeable owner, and this is about as good as it gets in 38 metres. She’s extremely well engineered, sails very well even in very light winds due to her composite hull, and has been chartering very successfully this winter, so there is potential good income for a new buyer. We’re feeling quite positive about being able to sell her fairly quickly, she should attract a lot of interest now that she is back from the Caribbean and available to view in Palma.By Gemma Fottles, Interview by Merijn de Waard
