After 23 years with the company, Bruce Brakenhoff Jr. has announced he has left his position as President of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/157" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi USA (Company)">Perini Navi USA</a> to join brokerage and charter firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. SuperYacht Times can reveal that Brakenhoff Jr. will now be leading <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>’s fast-growing US division. Having brought his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/157" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi USA (Company)">Perini Navi USA</a> team with him, Bruce will be working alongside Robert Shepherd who heads up US operations for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. Here we share more about the move in an exclusive interview with Bruce, Robert and Edmiston’s Chief Executive, Jamie Edmiston.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/173923/image/large-5872fa2e45feeeb54685a730845f4ce1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/173923">First of all, Bruce, congratulations on joining Edmiston. What made you decide to make the move from Perini Navi?&nbsp;A couple of years ago when Mr Perini was no longer the main shareholder, it occurred to me that all things do eventually come to an end. For the first time, I began to think about a different chapter in my career. I turned 60 last year and my wife and I decided that it was time for something new, so I reached out to Jamie and in February I began to think seriously about resigning from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/157" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi USA (Company)">Perini Navi USA</a>.&nbsp;There's a tremendous opportunity here at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> thanks to its amazing infrastructure. The company arms its brokers and managers with the tools to conduct business and I feel that the new US team will be a perfect fit. Sure, I got approached by other people and this move may surprise some, but I gave Jamie my word. We click and understand each other so I think we're going to complement each other really well. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/49662/image/large-7742892b261fae6afb21fc3dedcb2ab9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/49662">Jamie, you worked together with Bruce back in 2018 on one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/new-owner-for-70m-perini-navi-superyacht-sybaris" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">largest Perini Navi sales ever</a>. Did the success of this deal influence your decision to employ Bruce? And, do you have further plans to expand Edmiston?In my opinion, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> is a successful company because we have a diverse workforce with a variety of skills and without a doubt, I can see that Bruce will fit in well. This is an opportunity for us to form a new and, what I believe will be, very strong and compelling partnership. Thanks to the collaboration on the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/new-owner-for-70m-perini-navi-superyacht-sybaris" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">large Perini Navi sale</a>, I was able to work closely with Bruce and got to know him very well. The sale was finalised relatively quickly, despite its complications.We have recently made a number of other strategic decisions at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>, this one being the biggest and most visible. In addition, we've invested heavily in tech and will continue to invest in having great people on our team as ultimately, we are a people business.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/16514/image/large-bb8474034e1b72800c0f2883d6bffe16.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16514" style="background-color: initial; font-size: 0.85rem;">Robert, how important it is for you and the presence of Edmiston in the USA to have Bruce and his team join you? How will you work together?This move is a lot more than just a few new additional brokers, they're bringing with them an amazing 85 years of experience. As two powerful groups who are joining forces, it will clearly help grow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>’s success in the Americas. We have found that there is a great deal of crossover between clients that I think will help to get deals across the line together as a team.Given Bruce's experience with the Buckets and Perini Cups, I think it's safe to assume that we will have more of a presence at these events because, as we know, when times get tough the relationship with a client is really important. Bruce and I are already brainstorming ideas for when we are together in Newport – which is a great location. There are so many superyachts right outside the office window here and so we feel very strategically placed. Same with our New York office, which has one of the biggest central agency fleets in the industry. These are times when people are spending their money differently and I see a lot of opportunities for growth. Fortunately, we were able to come to terms, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4146" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seahawk60.0m (196'10&quot;)Perini Navi2013">Seahawk</a> had a favourable survey and sea trials in La Spezia,” Berson adds.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/77257/image/large-b3142585784c98fbecb3edc99820a02d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77257"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4146" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seahawk60.0m (196'10&quot;)Perini Navi2013">Seahawk</a>’s naval architecture comes from the drawing boards of the Viareggio-based shipyard’s in-house team together with Vancouver-based designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/52" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ron Holland Design (Company)">Ron Holland</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> also drew up the exterior design, while the interior comes from famed French designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/331" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Liaigre (Company)">Christian Liaigre</a>, who opted for dark, warm and natural tones. The open plan saloon is flooded with natural light since it is separated from the cockpit by large glass windows, and the main lounge aft has a cosy and intimate feel.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/77258/image/large-826da55f006c83eb210d4f63d5b99ab2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77258">Another striking feature found on board yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4146" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seahawk60.0m (196'10&quot;)Perini Navi2013">Seahawk</a> is the abundant amount of exterior space, with spacious fore and aft cockpits, a wide sea terrace on a foredeck that also carries two 21-foot tenders, an al-fresco dining area on the flybridge, and two swimming platforms - one at the transom and one port side.Up to 12 guests and 11 crew can be accommodated on board the modern ketch. The luxurious suites include a full-beam master with two double beds on opposite ends of the room, making it possible to divide the master into two VIP suites. The 50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phryne50.0m (164'1&quot;)Perini Navi1999">Phryne</a> has been sold, thanks to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/136" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Independence (Company)">Ocean Independence</a> brokers Barbara Müller and Marc Händle who represented the buyer and co-central agent Dirk Johnson of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi USA</a>. Bruce Brakenhoff, President of Perini Navi USA and all-round sailing yacht ambassador, gives us his thoughts on the state of the sailing yacht brokerage market through these quick-fire questions.

What are the key differences, if any, in the approach towards the sale of motor and sailing yachts? 

I don’t have enough experience with motor yachts to fairly comment on this, but if I had to guess, I would say that in the new build motor yacht market it appears that a big percentage of the sales in the 40 to 60-meter range are spec-builds with short delivery times. We sailboat builders are not in the position to do this.

 

Would encouraging motor yacht designers to become more involved in the design/styling of sailing yachts increase the popularity of these vessels? 

I do not believe so.

 

Can you identify a certain size range which has seen a growing amount of interest from potential buyers over the past few years? 

In the new build market it seems that 32 to 35 meters is a popular and busy size range (see Baltic, Swan, Green Marine, etc.). However, over the last three years or so, the brokerage market sales have been steady and spread out through all sizes –  with numerous transactions from 35 to 64 meters taking place.

We see an increasing amount of high-performance strictly functional super sailing yachts being designed and delivered. Do you feel there is perhaps a need for builders to return to focusing more on sturdy, comfortable blue water cruisers in order to appeal to a larger field of clients?

It’s not the builders driving the marketplace in the sailing industry. Recently, the buyers appear to have made a choice to fund the builds of smaller and speed-centric type sailboats. At Perini Navi we have continued to celebrate and honour our Blue Water cruising family members. This summer, for instance, we have two of our vessels (a 56-metre and a 55-metre) cruising the Northwest Passage (they actually passed each other in a fjord!). Another of our yachts is up in Finland (a 50-metre) and two others out in the South Pacific (56-metre and a 60-metre).

Sailing yacht brokerage: One minute with Bruce Brakenhoff

The 1990-built Perini Navi sailing yacht Aquarius which has been listed been for sale through Burgess recently changed hands in a transaction involving Dirk Johnson of Perini Navi USA who acted on behalf of the buyer. Burgess’ Henry Craven-Smith represented the seller. Aquarius was listed at an asking price of $9,750,000.

Built by Perini Navi in 1990 (refit 2010), the 47 metre Aquarius was designed by the Perini Navi in-house team and constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. On board, the ketch accommodates up to 10 guests over four well-appointed cabins, including two large double cabins and two twin cabins each with an additional Pullman berth. A crew of eight are also accommodated for.

Perini Navi USA reported on another transaction that took place this past month involving a mysterious yacht which changed hands in mid-July. Perini Navi USA represented the seller in this particular deal which was sold to a client of Cetin Sever of International Yacht Charters in Cannes at an asking price of $10,900,000.

47m Sailing yacht Aquarius sold

A number of high profile sailing yachts have changed hands during the first six months of 2016. Here we take a look at just some of the largest and most recent of those sales.

Q (ex. Mondango)

The 52 metre sailng yacht Mondango (now named Q) was announced sold in March this year. Stockbridge Yacht Brokers and joint central agents Burgess having represented the owner, and Camper &amp; Nicholsons acting on behalf of the buyer. Originally built for an international businessman, Mondango was designed by Dubois Naval Architects as a high performance aluminium ketch with luxury world cruising in mind. Mondango features a modern and fresh interior, designed by Reymond Langton, which offers luxury accommodation for 10 guests. 

Twizzle

Y.CO secured the sale of the 57.5 metre sailng yacht Twizzle at the start of the year. Built by Royal Huisman in 2010, the iconic Twizzle features naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects, and interior design by Redman Whiteley Dixon in collaboration with Todhunter Earle. Will Christie of Y.CO acted as Joint Central Agent in the sale with Burgess and Jim Wallace of Camper and Nicholsons International representing the buyer. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €39,750,000.

Shamrock V

Edmiston also announced in March the sale of the 36.58 metre sailing yacht Shamrock V. Originally built in 1930 by Camper &amp; Nicholsons Shipyard for Sir. Thomas Lipton - the founder of Lipton tea - she is the only wooden J-Class yacht ever built. Shamrock V was sold with Edmiston representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale she was listed at an asking price of €6,000,000.

In February Perini Navi USA announced the sale of the 38 metre sloop P2. Built by Perini Navi in 2008, P2 has an alloy hull and carbon superstructure and features naval architecture and exterior design by the renowned Philippe Briand. P2 was listed for sale at Perini Navi USA, with Perini Navi’s Bruce Brakenhoff representing both the buyer and the seller in the deal. At the time of sale, she was listed at an asking price of $9,900,000.

Yanneke Too

Sailing yacht Yanneke Too, a sleek 36 metre sailing yacht delivered by Camper &amp; Nicholsons in 1996, was sold in April this year after having been jointly listed for sale through Burgess and Yachtzoo with Ardell having introduced the buyer. Yanneke Too is designed by British designer Bill Dixon, and she was conceived for worldwide cruising. At the time of the sale her asking price was set at €1,800,000.

Jazz Jr.

The 32.8 metre sailing yacht Jazz Jr. was announced sold by Hoek Brokerage this week. built by Turquoise Yachts in 2009, the Hoek Designed yacht was on offer at an asking price of €3.800.000 at the time of the sale.

The 44m Dubois-designed Ketch Timoneer, built by Vitters in 2001, found a new owner earlier this month. The sale was announced by President of Perini Navi USA, Bruce Brakenhoff, having represented the seller along with Burgess as co-central agent with Pam Barlow of Luke Brown Yachts acting on behalf of the buyer. Timoneer’s asking price at the time of the sale was $8,250,000.

One of the largest sailing catamarans in North America was recently sold by Denison Yacht Sales. Built by Blue Coast Yachts in France, the 95-foot Cartouche was offered at an asking price of €4,450,000. The seller was represented by Catherine Relandeau (Cath Yachts) and Jean-Marie Cabri (Denison Yacht Sales) represented the buyer.

Yacht Moments have announced the sale of the 56 metre luxury sailing yacht, Parsifal IV. The sale was completed by the chairman of the company, Kurt Lehmann, who represented the buyer. Dirk Johnson joins the Perini Navi Group

Gaston Lees-Buckley of Camper &amp; Nicholsons International has been appointed as the Joint Central Agent with Perini Navi USA, for the sale of the new Perini Navi 38 metre. Perini Navi C2130 for sale with CNI and Perini Navi USA

The Perini Navi Group has announced that the 30.65 metre sloop Xnoi (pronounced per noi, which means for us) has been launched. This sailing yacht has a hull, superstructure, mast and boom in carbon fibre. Ocean Independence has announced another new Joint Central Agency, this time with Perini Navi USA for the sale of superyacht Clan VI. Clan VI was built in 1983 by the renowned shipyard Perni Navi. She was the first mega sailer to emerge from the Viareggio based shipyard in Italy. During her refit a new custom made Jacuzzi tub was added forward of the superstructure, while her flybridge was extended.
