Since her initial restoration, she has undergone multiple refits at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Shipyard</a>, including a five metre hull extension in 2000. She has won several prestigious sailing competitions, including the Pendennis Cup and the St Barths Bucket. Last refitted in 2015, she can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests in four staterooms and is powered by a single <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> engine, achieving a top speed of 12 knots.&nbsp;

The 37.28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philip & Sons (Company)">Philip &amp; Sons</a> classic motor yacht Atlantide has been relaunched following an extensive rebuild and restoration and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>'s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7286" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Huisfit (Company)">Huisfit</a> facility in the Netherlands. The yacht was refitted in 1998 and changed hands twice in her history, operating under the name Kovalam for some time. She is still in use today nearly a century after her construction and was recently spotted cruising in Sardinia.

As part of our history series from revered in-house yacht historian, Malcolm Wood, SYT takes a closer look at yacht builders that are, for one reason or another, no longer in existence. This issue we head to the United Kingdom to take a closer look at the yachts built by Dartmouth-based builders Phillip &amp; Sons.Philip &amp; Sons was originally established by George Philip who had transferred from Aberdeen to work at Kelly’s Sandquay slipways at Dartmouth in Devon as the leading foreman/shipwright. William Kelly retired in 1858 leaving George Philip to take over the yard. His son Alexander inherited the yard when his father died in 1874.Essentially a commercial shipbuilder Philip &amp; Son constructed a wide variety of tugs, passenger vessels, cargo ships, steam and motor yachts, as well as enjoyed several naval launches and pinnaces in addition to several luxury private yachts. The yard also built some historic naval vessels in its early years. In the late 19th century, it collaborated with the Noss shipyard of Simpson Strickland in the building of recreational vessels.Notable yachts built at this time included the 90-foot steamer Alice&nbsp;of 1882, the 96-foot steamer Thalatta of 1887 and the 101-foot schooner George Holt of 1892.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/25402/image/large-f9298b17a8f9341e85ac400e6aada669.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25402"> Dwyen Wen Mention should be made of the 112-year-old Dwyn Wen, a 106-foot schooner designed by A. Richardson for her original owner, J.H. Burton. This remarkable survivor was rebuilt by the yard from 1984 to 1985 and spent many years chartering in Madagascar when owned by John and Nanou Guthrie.In 1918, Philip &amp; Sons took over the Noss yard of Simpson Strickland prior to specialising in the construction of tugs. By 1923 a controlling share of the company was owned by the major shipbuilder Swan, Hunter &amp; Wigham Richardson. This resulted in the construction of coastal tankers, ferries and excursion vessels.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/25403/image/large-179edfea67115b1f07c71b4425b7bb11.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25403"> Kovalam (Ex: Lady May) Yachts were not abandoned with this change, however, with several sailing yachts launched in the mid-1920s in the 60-70 foot range. Several of these have been restored and are still in service today. Larger diesel-engined motor yachts were also delivered in the late 1920s and 30s including the 1928 102 foot Edi for Sweden, the 1928 138 foot St. Katharine for the Port of London Authority, the 1929 100 foot Azur for a private UK owner, and the 1929 103 foot&nbsp;Lady May&nbsp;for the Conde de Riba d’Ave of Portugal. Lady May, now known as Lady May of Glandore has recently been restored by her current Italian owner. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/25401/image/large-325f4572e084ac23f7dc6b83f87c5f48.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25401"> Atlantide in Malta in 1997 Three more large yachts were delivered in the 1930s, namely the 1930 116 foot Caleta, known today as Atlantide that underwent an extensive rebuild/restoration by the late Tom Perkins, the 1932 100 foot Nagmati for the HH Maharao Saheb of Kutch and the 1938 126 foot Campeador V. This latter yacht was unfortunately lost with all hands after striking a mine in the English Channel in June 1940.During WWII, around 230 minesweepers, corvettes and air-sea rescue vessels were completed by the Philips despite the bombing of the yard in September 1942 that killed 20 employees. Quite a few of the air-sea rescue craft were converted to yachts after the war.&nbsp;In the 1950s the shipyard continued to build a wide variety of commercial vessels including the 1956 219 foot Seyyid Khalifa for the Sultan of Zanzibar. This was a cargo/passenger vessel that doubled up as the Sultan’s private yacht. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/25406/image/large-61449ebc98ac23a01746d8d940ccf31b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25406"> Seyyid KhalifaThe last known yacht completed by the yard was the 60-foot Jabula&nbsp;delivered in 1964 and believed to be still in existence today. The ghost of yards past: Philip & Sons

The 37.28 metre Atlantide is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful classic yachts in existence today. Originally built in 1930 by the Philip and Sons shipyard in Dartmouth, England, she has lead a fascinating life. From surviving her enlistment in the WWII efforts, to serving Italian aristocracy in the 80s, to falling into disrepair and being picked up by the legendary late yachtsman, Tom Perkins, in the late 90s, she has beat the odds stacked up against her. Charming owner after owner, each as in love with her as the last, she has been meticulously maintained throughout her lifetime, and today, is in better shape than ever before.

Richard Fairbanks, together with his wife, Leslie, are the latest in Atlantide’s impressive line of loving owners. Here we talk to Fairbanks about what exactly attracted the couple to Atlantide, and why they have no plans to move on any time soon.
 
You purchased Atlantide in 2012 - did you own a yacht before taking ownership?
Yes, we owned several larger Feadships and cruised the world with friends and family. The most recent one was named Northern Light. She had a John Munford designed interior with fluted mahogany columns and custom designed furniture made by Munford. Extensive artwork accented this classic gentleman’s yacht.
Atlantide has topped several lists of the world’s most beautiful classic yachts, but she is, perhaps, not quite what the majority would look for in a new vessel. What were you looking for when you purchased Atlantide?
Atlantide found us… We were not planning to purchase another yacht at the time. One look at Atlantide and Leslie woke me up at 2:30 in the morning to show me photographs of “the prettiest boat she has ever seen.” A few days later we were sailing her along the coast of Majorca, and found Atlantide to be a masterpiece inside and out.
Restored by legendary yachtsman Tom Perkins and his designer Ken Freivokh, who claimed it to be the most expensive restoration per foot of any yacht, she shows it from her museum quality collection of Lalique crystal, to a one-of-a-kind antique Bugatti teak and mahogany tender (complete with a handmade single cylinder 2 hp Bugatti engine personally built by Ettore Bugatti) to her gleaming classic Gardner diesel engines. Atlantide’s Ettore Bugatti 9’ power launch is especially cherished among Bugatti aficionados for her unique history in the Bugatti legacy and her rarity.
Atlantide has a wonderfully storied history; starting with her design by legendary Alfred Mylne, designer of the Royal Yacht Britannia, for yachtsman Sir William Burton. A little more than a decade later she played a heroic role in rescuing, while under fire, English and French soldiers stranded in the Battle of Dunkirk. Did the rich history of the yacht attract you to her?
Yes, Atlantide’s rich history very definitely appeals to us and we are particularly drawn to yacht, automotive and architectural designs of the 1930s and the art deco period. At the time Burton commissioned Atlantide, he was helmsman of Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock IV, the J Class challenger for the 1930 America’s Cup, and Burton used Atlantide as a tender for a succession of J Class yachts.

Tom Perkins followed suit and Atlantide was used as a tender to his beautifully restored 1915 Herreshoff twin-masted schooner Mariette. On a smaller scale, we use Atlantide as a tender for our 1903 Herreshoff cutter/racer while competing in classic boat regattas in New England waters. Atlantide’s timeless beauty has seduced one dedicated owner after another to care for her and in return she has given her owners more than a million miles of sailing pleasure.
 
Where do you tend to cruise with Atlantide?
Until things settle down in the eastern Mediterranean, we will cruise the U.S. East Coast and Canada from the Chesapeake to Montreal, and possibly, western Greenland. We have cruised all over the world and our very favorite cruising waters are coastal Maine. The protected calm waters of the pristine deep bays, diverse wildlife and thousands of islands to visit and explore are always a pleasure for our family and guests.
We never get tired of this area and can take a different passage home every trip. It was important to us that we could maneuver into tight coves and onto smaller docks found in coastal Maine, and Atlantide allows us this up-close look. Hearing a pilot whale and calf breathing alongside in a morning fog before you see them is an unforgettable memory.

A charter experience on board such a fascinating and gracefully restored vessel would definitely be a one-of-a-kind experience. Is charter something that you would ever look at?
We do not charter Atlantide, and have no plans to charter her!
Since her rebuild completed in 1999, Atlantide has been kept in pristine condition. Do you plan on doing any work to her in the future?
We have done a complete rebuild of all the mechanicals and electronics, including a complete rebuild of both Gardner engines down to the mains over the past two years. She is a new boat once again! Her interior has been maintained in museum-quality condition.
